If I understand it right you are referring to the chickens that are not
housed in a poultry house. The native chickens are the ones that are
just roaming around in your yard and neighborhood and you just call out
to feed.

It is my understanding that these chickens developed their immunity
because they are naturally inoculated to the diseases because they are
subjected to it since hatching. These chickens feds on anything that it
finds on the ground including poop for that matter or anything that it
finds edible and does not kill them.

When I was young, which was a million and one years ago I have an uncle
in another island where he has an egg poultry farm. These chickens are
protected from the "native" chickens, regularly vaccinated and fed with
special store bought fed. It is very sensitive to anything and the way
it was explained by the veterinarian, that these chickens have lower
resistance because it is being "protected". I think the best way to
explain it is when a "balikbayans" goes back, most of them will have
LBM if they drink the water or some food that might not cause the same
reactions from the "native".

Going back to your plan to mass raise the native chickens, I imagine
that will be possible if you have large track of land and just let them
loose. Just let them live through the elements and just feed them
regularly. The weight increase rate of these chickens might not be as
what you want it to be economically feasible.

It never came into my mind in raising native chicken. But one thing i
like most in the native chicken is when it cooked in our native
delicacy called "Lauya". Yummy!

Hello,

Has anyone here have or have had experience raising native chicken in
commercial quantities in Siquijor? Would you like to share your
experience to a would-be poultry raiser like me? I have learned from
the DOST-PCARRD website that this is a good source of supplementary
income for farmers. They say that native varieties are a more
resistant breed, thus easier to maintain. I'd like to try my hand in
this and if this works maybe, could be a benchmark used by other
farmers in raising native chicken.

best regards

Almost 40 years ago, on a Sunday night nearing midnight the town of
Larena was awakened by burst of gunfire. It was a full moon so the
streets were dimly lit with moonlight. Larena was attacked by pirates.

Two places were targeted first, Setsin and the Tan Bongco compound
which at that time was managed by Boy Tan. Setsin with his saleswoman
Gunding were taken hostage. Boy Tan on the other hand fought back,
but unfortunately died on the process. He killed for certain one of
the pirates who was later found dead behind Iya Sidra's house a place
where SVA students smokes to hide from the teachers.

Two additional pirates were killed by the PC (Philippine
Constabulary) composed of a trooper and a sergeant by the name of
Rene Hirmosisima. It was a stroke of luck that the pirates called out
first and the PC started shooting and as a result a part of the
pirates skull is cleanly cut with brains thrown all over. The call
out word was "Bo" and the following years it was funny when people
just used it to make a joke. Rene's fame or notorierity grew and he
was viewed with awe and respect. Although I was not greatly impressed
with Rene Hermosisima,it was then that I developed a respect of what
a GARAND M-1 can do.

An episode stuck into my mind that fateful night. After Boy Tan was
discovered dead. A man who was working for the Tan Bongco's was
ordered to go to Dumaguete for whatever reason at that time. He
chartered a motor launch which was plying Larena-Dumaguete route,
owned by Baricas from Dumaguete. The manager of the motor launch was
the bepestacled Peping Ilonggo.

I never did understand why the man did it. Everybody knows that there
were still pirates and there was a very strong possibility of the
motor launch being commandeered by the fleeing pirates because motor
launch Sta Monica was slow. Was it sense of duty? bravado? sense of
loyalty? who knows. But for whatever reason I can not help respecting
the guy.

The man's name Jesus Gubuan. Now you know the rest of the story. I
was looking at the orbituary this site, that is why I remembered the
episode.

I would defnitely agree with miss flimh@.... Better things have been badly
wished by hopeful siquijorians. Things now are still the same than they were
before. You can not expect abrupt changes, for that is something that is not
within the mind of those people who, they believed could do some changes, for
these people whom "they elect to office" could only do lesser than less. For
them, thinking about the welfare of the constituents would only add to the
wrinkles in their forhead. So, better be not hopefuls for changes because it
won't fall into the right place and time as they badly wanted.

wait till forever... pagputi sa OWAK, that will
happen.. a year ago.. a couple of brave siquijorians
formed CAVS.. but it just lasted 1 month. what a shame

ok psyche! there's nothing wrong with what you are doing... It's actually nice!
However, my Tagalog and foriegner friends easily catch the word Siquijorian than
Siquijodnon. On the other side, my Visayan friends giggle when i tell them i'm
a siquijodnon. For them, it has an appeal. My point is, i guess we can use
them both depending to contexts. Let us not be too puritan in this manner...
But what you are raising is really nice... I appreciate that! I think this issue
never dawns to other Siquijodnons. Simple it may appear but it embodies a lot of
meaning to real and caring Siqujodnons...like you.

More power and God bless to you Pscyhe!

Dear Everyone,

I should have keep myself in a silent mode and just reading exchanges of
opinions that would somehow start pointing fingers on who really are accountable
of the state being, our province is experiencing right now. In many ways i
guess, it is very easy to blame than to appreciate.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion and point of views but setting
goals will not lead those good points to be nowhere objectively. We must be
SMART in setting priorities and must go back to the very basic. Though Siquijor
is known to be a dollar earner, we cannot deny that Siquijorians in general can
hardly meet their basic needs. Food, clothing and shelter which i learned way
back then, though it depends to where we will benchmark our level of mediocrity.

In my point of view, i always believe that 'no body can help you, in the first
place, but only yourself.' Each one of us has a gift of conceptualization and
the power to break the wall of impossiblities, the reason why almost everything
made in this world to make life easy was being thought by humans. If you buy
this, then making Siquijorian life the positive way we want it to be, will no
longer be a question but a lot of oppurtunities.

I give credit to Rio's phrase of stability, that it is just an imaginary
state of mind, that it is only either we are growing or decaying. So nobody can
claim they are well off therefore they are stable. We can start examining
ourselves whether we are getting better everyday. Let us treat each day of our
lives either our first day or our last. Guess what are important to us if
granted either of those two days? Can we link legacies and promises?

Let the positive changes be in our self first and then let us be contagious to
others. From our every home up to our Siquijorian community, let be respectful
followers become leaders by example. Let hope and faith be renewed that what we
give in any kind will be back to us in many folds. Aren't health and peace of
mind worthy compared to the charity we shared to the less fortunate? We are
guided by the paradox of life yet most of us prefer to stay at our comfort
zones. Can we extend some extra mile to support the weakiest link? Can we see
their faces made bright because of the satisfactory services they had received?
then possibly we can beat what we expected...the life we want to our every dear
Siquijorian.

Specifically to CAVs, you've started it right and might, yet you have possibly
choosen to swerve. Give kind chances for the second time or third time around,
don't give up and never forget the learnings. In life's negativities, try
shifting the paradigm and look for positivities, and in every life's details
make it passionately challenging rather than accepting you had failed. Don't
concentrate at the obstacles rather effectively shoot the star you are initially
aiming for.

rio, manila is too far from siquijor. it is even more expensive to travel going
there. I am not sure if there is a cardiologist at silliman medical center but
i'm sure there are in cebu. Cebu is closer to our island and that its fare
going there is cheaper. Try at Cebu Doc or in Chunghua (am not sure with the
spelling!)!

   gudluck!

Prompt medical treatment is really very important in saving a patient's life
and that would only be possible if there are adequate facilities. It is indeed
very sad to know that the glaring inadequacy is staring at us right in the eye.
Is there a way we can lobby as a group to petition out local government to
provide the necessary facilities for our hospital? I know that we do not even
have to do that because it was part of the government officials' list of

dear psyche,

i just would like to know what is the difference between siquijorian and
siquijodnon? Why do i need to call myself siquijodnon and not siquijorian? Why
can't i interchange them?

I'm just asking since you write somewhere that the proper term to call the
locales of Siquijor are siquijodnon.

rio grande <rio637@...> wrote:

the other way starts with birth, then stagnation, deterioration and end with
decay. Thus, I still hope for growth, development and eventually transformation
for our island brought about by well thought of plans and an enlightened
citizenry. And who should be at the forefront of this? I'd say the government
officials whom we elected into office, the very same politicians who promised to
make life better for us. It is their role, duty and responsibility to provide
basic public services because that is what they are in office for... and if we
are not getting that it is within our right to complain. But I also agree with
you that we should not only complain ...yes, we should act to make sure that
these lying and scheming government officials never be voted into office again.

Let us keep track of government projects and make sure that the money intended
for infrastructure really goes into the projects and not into their mansions, or
own businesses. For if we want investors to flourish in siquijor we've got to
provide good facilities, right? If we want to encourage the private sector, the
local government should make it attractive for local people to stay and not go
somewhere else where life is not too primitive ... afterall its the 21st
century.

   best regards

There is. I think, there are boats every night going to Cebu. The approximate
time of travel is 8 hours depending on what kind of vessel you are riding.
Actually, it's just an overnight travel.

You may check it in the internet. I don't have the schedule because I'm
staying in Manila. I only go home during vacation.
