The 90/10 Principle by Stephen Covey

Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life.

What is the 90/10 Principle?
10% of life is made up of what happens to you.
90% of life is decided by how you react.
What does this mean?
We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us.
We cannot stop the car from breaking down.
The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off.

A driver may cut us off in traffic.
We have no control over this 10%.
The other 90% is different.
You determine the other 90%.
How? By your reaction.

You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction.
Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.
Let's use an example.

You are eating breakfast with your family.
Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt.
You have no control over what just what happened.
What happens when the next will be determined by how you react.
You curse.
You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.She breaks down in tears.
After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table.

A short verbal battle follows.
You storm upstairs and change your shirt.
Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school.
She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work.
You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school.

Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit.
After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school.
Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye.
After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase.
Your day has started terribly.
As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse.
You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?

The answer is D.

You had no control over what happened with the coffee.
How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.
Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you.
Your daughter is about to cry.
You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time."
Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs.
After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus.
She turns and waves.
You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff.
Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.

Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios.
Both started the same.
Both ended different.
Why? Because of how you REACTED.

You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens.
The other 90% was determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.
If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge.
Let the attack roll off like water on glass.
You don't have to let the negative comment affect you!
React properly and it will not ruin your day.
A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired,
getting stressed out etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic?
Do you lose your temper?
Pound on the steering wheel?
A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off!
Do you curse?
Does your blood pressure skyrocket?
Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work?
Why let the cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.
You are told you lost your job.
Why lose sleep and get irritated?
It will work out.
Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.

The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day.
Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant?
She has no control over what is going on.
Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger.
Why get stressed out?
It will just make things worse.

Now you know the 90-10 principle.
Apply it and you will be amazed at the results.
You will lose nothing if you try it.
The 90-10 principle is incredible.
Very few know and apply this principle.
The result?
Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials,problems and heartache.
There never seem to be a success in life.
Bad days follow bad days.
Terrible things seem to be constantly happening.
There is constant stress, lack of joy, and broken relationships.
Worry consumes time.
Anger breaks friendships and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest.
Friends are lost.

Life is a bore and often seems cruel.
Does this describe you? If so, do not be discouraged.
You can be different!
Understand and apply the 90/10 principle.
It will change your life.

Dear Friends,

Due to busy work schedule, I'm afraid I may not be able to organise gatherings for everyone for a while.

However, no worries... I will continue to sponsor Singles Delight portal( http://www.singlesdelight.com ) so that everyone can still continue to search for new friends online at NO COST.

For friends who just joined the group.... Singles Delight is a singles portal which I had created a couple of months back specially for singles who wish to make new friends online. This portal is open to all Singles in the World and not just to Singles Hub friends. As long as you are sincerely looking for friends, you are welcome to post your personal profile and initiate contact with other like-minded members.

Of course, in the meantime, also feel free to invite your friends to join so that they too can benefit from it as well. So far, I'm very encouraged by the support shown to the portal. Many friends had invited their personal friends to join as well. Till date, Singles Delight has more than 130 members.

Hi Friends,

As responses to join Singles Delight ( http://www.singlesdelight.com ) has been pretty good, I'm please to inform you that I will be extending the free usage period further from 31 Dec 2004 to 15 Feb 2005.

Since my previous email some one and a half month ago announcing free usage (post personal profile and initiate contact for free till 31 Dec 04), responses had been most encouraging. Many had also referred their personal friends to join the new online Singles portal. Till date, the membership base in Singles Delight has just crossed the one hundred mark.

I hope this new extension will provide adequate time for most of you (if not all) to find your special someone by Valentine Day next February.

In the meantime, do continue with your efforts in spreading the words around so that more singles can enjoy this benefit to know more friends.

Note: If the response was again very good this round, I might consider extending the free usage period for Singles Delight to beyond 15 Feb 2005.

Hi Friends,

Please be reminded that the deadline for registration of the "Hi Tea" gathering at Vietro is tomorrow 25 Nov (5pm). If you are interested to come, kindly inform me by then as I need to confirm with the restaurant the exact number of participants.

As at this afternoon, 61 people had already confirmed. The "Hi Tea" will be in buffet style... this is to provide more opportunity for participants to interact and changing seats if necessary to know more friends.

As suggested by some friends in my last "Hi Tea" gathering, I will be compiling a contact list for all the participants (including participants from DBS SDU) who are coming for the Vietro "Hi Tea" gathering on 28 Nov.

To respect participants who wish to keep their contact information confidential, I will be individually sending another email to participants after the event.... Hi Frens,

I have just got the weather information for this coming Sunday(19 Sept).... There will be isolated showers throughout the day..... as such, I think it would be wise to cancel this Sunday's outdoor cycling gathering at Pulau Ubin. Please inform your friends of the cancellation if you happened to forward my earlier email to them. Thanks.

Instead of doing an outdoor event on that day, I will be heading down to Suntec Convention Centre to take a look at the International Food Festival 2004 (http://www.internationalfoodfestival.com.sg). The admission is Free.

One of the friends just asked me how come this activity also appear in the SDU magazine and their website. Is it the same activity ?

Yes, I'm glad to say that it is. This is a special joint event for Singles Hub and DBS SDU members. The main objective of doing this joint event is to widen the social circles for both groups and enhance the opportunity of members to get to know more new single friends.

Hi All,

Due to overwhelming responses to tomorrow's Chill Out event, we regret that we have to close the registration with immediate effect (ie. 1 hour before the official deadline).

Note: Any registration received after this notice will be placed on the reserve list.

For friends who can't get a place for this event, please do not be disheartened as I will be organising a "Hi Tea" gathering next Sunday (1 August) at Siam Kitchen restaurant. This is an equally popular activity as some 70 friends turned up for the last one which I did there earlier. Once I confirm the details, I should be able to send out the information for the "Hi Tea" to the group as early as tomorrow.

Hi All,

It's been a long time since I last organised a roller blading get-together session. I am please to inform u that I will be organising one this coming Sunday.

Details of the gathering are as follow :

Date : 4 Apr 2004

Time : 3.30pm to 5.45pm (NB: Please be punctual)

Meeting place : East Coast Park Mcdonald's (at the seatings directly outside

Mcdonald's & next to the car park).

Note: Those who do not have a pair of roller blades can rent it from the nearby inline skating kiosk.

Feel free to bring any of your friends along.

For new friends who just joined Singles Hub and have not seen me before, I will be wearing a white T shirt with the lettering "Daniel Hechter" in front and a blue jean.

After the blading (around 6pm), we can take our dinner at the nearby food court. Of course, for those who are still energetic after the dinner, we can proceed to Coffee Bean for a cuppa and light chat.

Please be reminded the registration deadline for the "Hi Tea" cum gathering is on 5 March 2004 (9am). Registration received after this deadline will not be entertained as I would have confirmed the final headcount with the restaurant by then.
