I put together a small portable simplex repeater using the following:
Argent Data ADS-SR1 Simplex Repater
Old Kenwood HT that I had laying around
Slim Jim Antenna made from twin lead cable purchased on ebay
12v 7.5 Amp Hour Gel Cell Battery

I packaged it in a waterproof food storage container. Everything fits
inside the 8"x11" container for transportation.

I deployed it on a mountaintop to maximize coverage of the area we were
in. I used Radio Mobile to determine the best location for the repeater.

It worked great and we were able to communicate over a long distance in
very remote countryside. The battery lasted between 3-5 days depending
on how much we used it.

Just uploaded a few pics of my toolbox repeater (used a camera phone).
The radio is a Maxon SM6450 with Argent repeater, external speaker and mic. I did
not have to get into the case to wire it as it has a plug on the back of the
radio (designed to be used with another similar radio with a duplex repeater
set-up.) I used the external speaker plug on the back of the radio as well.
Power for radio and repeater is through single power cord with cigarette lighter
plug. One corner of the box is notched to run power and coaxial cable through if
used with case closed. There is also room for several portables ( the white base
on the bottom of the case is thin foam sheet wrapping-to wrap portables). Not
shown is a magnetic mount antenna (trimmed with the use of an swr meter).
