I was there last year and agree it was a bit chilly and it did rain the last
night and finally snowed on us as we packed up on the day we left. First
day of spring my butt!

The one thing I did love about it was that its really easy to get around and
the distances between things are not on the pennsic scale. The battlefield
was lush and green, there is shade in quite a few places. The A&S area is
lovely and lots of nice merchants etc. If we were expecting a kid the same
time as gulf Wars I'd probably be making the trek again.

I did find the classes well attended which was nice for a first time teacher
at the event. Plus there were many varied classes as well to take which was
also nice.

Greetings to the list,

I have the opportunity to take a class next month on Russian supported
spinning in the Orenburg style (I'm also taking a class on Orneburg style
shawl knitting :) ) While I know the shawls are out of period, I was
wondering if anyone had done any digging on Russian spinning techniques?
Most everything I've run across are references to linen spinning, including
loads of images of distaffs. I'm looking for information of wool and goat
hair primarily. I'd also be interested if anyone has any info on Russian
paddle style carding combs and whether they are very modern or are an older
type. I know some carding combs had to be in use in the area-- after all
William of Rubrick mentions St. Blaise and his death by iron carding comb.

YIS,
Praksedys

Temperatures at Gulf Wars I have been told can vary greatly, between warm and
cold (to the point of frost/snow) and precipitation as well. So best to be
prepared with a layered approach to clothing, and have footwear that could
tolerate cold/wet conditions. Other than that enjoy. I am looking at trying to
get down there for the first time myself.

I believe I'll be hotel-ing it.

Does anyone have any tips? Vital information? Suggestions as to must-not-miss

The 3 times ive been to gulf it has started out with ice on the ground and
flurries in the air and ending in the upper 80's to monsoon type of rains. It
will start out cold and end warm, best bet is to bring the entire range of garb.
Mud will be everywhere if it rains. Also expect wildlife, nothing big and
dangerous unless you count racoons stealing your food dangerous. You will get to
know the insects on a first name basis but wont be swarming yet. Just remember
it is Mississippi and the weather at that time is in flux

Given I'll be obliged to fly and stay in a hotel rather than on site, I can give
the racoons a miss. ;) And I've been warned that the mosquitos down there can
carry off domestic pets and small children. Fortunately, up here, we have Deer
Flys and ticks, so I've had practice applying highly toxic levels of Deet. ;)

Really, I'm looking forward to it. And OMG Coursing! I suspect I'll spend much
of my time in Kennel Lands as I'm a complete nut for sighthound breeds.

Hello Everyone!

My SCA name is Kseniia Nikolaeva doch' and I am re-activating my account for the
first time in years! I originally started on here in 1999, when I first joined
the SCA. I left the SCA for a number of reasons, but re-joined a year and a half
ago. After going slow with my re-involvement, I'm ready to get back into it.

I still have a 16th century Russian persona, who is from the Pskov region of
Russia. In the SCA, I first started playing in Ealdormere, but moved to Avacal a
couple years ago for mundane reasons, and re-joined the SCA here. There's even a
Russian laurel in my area now!

Anyways, I hope those of you who may remember me are well, and I look forward to
getting back into this wonderful game of ours!

Greetings, all.

I have confirmation that we have a room for an hour at 10 Saturday morning,
to play in each others' libraries... and I have some goodies from one of
those Russian import merchants - looks like the tail end of someones's
booth. They were gifted to me, and the ones I can bear to part with are free
to a good home.

We've done a few book dives before - chances to show and tell our resources,
compare notes, arrange loans, tell stories... I sincerely hope (locals) will
come, will share, and will be edified by their fellow Slavs. I'll be
bringing a couple of boxes of books, myself.

I must confess that the current scheduled time conflicts with Chirurgeons,
so I'll be in early (9:30, I hope, there's no panel before us) to set out my
books, and get back from Chirurgeons as quickly as I can...

isttd,
Mir

I put my foot in my mouth and said I would make a hat for a friend.

Now I can't find a pattern for the bloody thing.

I have been told it is a "Russian / Cossak" style hat.

It looks as follows:
The top is a circular piece of wool
The sides are straight approx 2 - 3x the length from top to bottom of earlobe.
The sides are then either folded or rolled up to approx the middle of the ear.
There appear to be pin-tucks (in sets of 3 tucks) down the sides (from top to
bottom)

Can anyone give me a pic of this? or a page with better instructions?

If I have a good up close pic (on a person's head) I can figure out the pattern.

Thanks

That sounds like a perfect description of the **modern** Afghani pakol hat -
often referred to as the 'Mujahedeen hat'

The mention of the pintucks in sets of three was the thing that really
caught my eye...

This is very close - but the one I am looking for would look like this hat
turned inside out..

Instead of a 'Flat Cap' look, it is more of a 'pill box' hat style.

Have a look through the Slavic names section at Saint Gabriel. Since
they are documented to period, you'll get an idea what sorts of names
were used.

Greetings all. I'm working on a bodice for myself. Polish late period women's
clothes began to copy men's styles. I'm not sure if I will eventurally go with
the dangling buttons or go with the flat trim (parmentiere?).

If you've found a supplier, please send their name my way!

In Service,
Magdalena

I was looking for court gowns for the era of Alexander III. Found this site.
Kinda funny. Although I kinda covet Catherine II's red coat....or maybe just
that hat....

You might try renaissance-reflections.com  as they have a variety of cast
buttons, mostly flat, but with many different styles.  If the specific link
doesn't come through (from memory here) you might Google or search

Greetings, I have a scroll text that needs to be translated into Russian.
The phrasing is based on the Lisa Kies work and follows period texts as
closely as I could manage. Is there anyone out there who could look this
over for me to make sure I haven't made any glaring errors and provide a
Russian translation? I would really appreciate the help and would definitely
credit you for your work.
