A while back, before I joined this list, I recieved an email from a

I know I've been able to figure out other slavic languages based on my knowledge
of Russian. I know same holds true for other slavic speakers. Maybe if you can
post a page from the journal to the list we could figure it out.

Cough, cough... neither Lithuanian nor Latvian are Slavic languages.
(And Yahoo doesn't allow attachments so we don't have your text yet.)

Aside from that, I'm sure there's someone out there with language
skills who can help you out. :-) Try putting your doc in the Files
section of the list and we'll try to identify what language it's in!

I knew it wasn't written in Cyrillic, but I hadn't looked into the language
tree. I know it is not similar to Latin or German, or I might have been
able to figure a little out.

Sorry about the attachment. It is uploaded in the files now.

is some links to depictions of dress prior to 1500.

It is indeed in Latvian (one of the two surviving Baltic languages, along with
Lithuanian,
after Old Prussian was made extinct at the end of the eighteenth century).

There are differences in spelling and accented letters compared with modern
Latvian but it
should still be readable by a fluent speaker, barring accidents of handwriting.

Oops. That's odd. That post bellow was written a while ago. But, it
just popped up now. lol. Oh well.

Thank you, Lydia od Ragusa, for contacting me off list.

As for others who would like to learn Croatian. If you are out there,

I am writing to update anyone interested in attending our Feast of
Knowledge.

We have had Middle Eastern, All things Viking, Byzantine, you name it. I was
sincerely hoping to have a Slavic tract at our Feast of Knowledge, but I
have had no offers for teachers. Is anyone interested before I have to try
another topic? I really only need about 3 classes on ANY topic related to
this.

There have been several offers made for visitors to stay in the homes of our
Shire members to help defer the cost of traveling. There has also been 3
cabins rented at Hualapai, but I believe only 1 is still available. It
sleeps 6, and the cost is $65 per night.

As far as transportation from the airport to Kingman, our Shire will gladly
help pick up and transport. Just let us know times and place.

If anyone is interested, please email me or call.

Blessings

You may want to check out Max Tilke, though he to is modern but online. de Bruyn
did some plates on Wallachian and Transylvanian men in the 16th century and Jost
Ammoan may have done some woodcuts for the Nuremburg school in the 16th century
as well.

I am not an expert, just been there, worked there, done a bit of research (much
older than Hus' era though).  Maybe this can help point you in a direction where
you will find a more definitive answer.  My understanding is this...

The form that comes into being in the relatively modern era is the one that
converts the place name at the end.  An example of this form of modification
would be "Of the Hana valley"  becoming Hanak, e.g Miroslav Hanak.  Miroslav's
daughter would be something like Maria Hanakova.  An example from Slovakia would
convert "Of Belusa" (north of Trencin) into Beluscek, thought that spelling
seems to vary.  Whether one converts to "cek" or the "ak" form seems variable
and I have far too small a sample to hazard a guess (both Belusa and Hana end in
"A" but one is definitely converted to "ak" (Hanak, see the athlete named
Hanakova for example) while the other certainly was translated to "cek" (see the
Beluscek family of Chicago as an example).

Surnames, even those derived form places, are not typically very old (this could
be a record-keeping bias) and as late as WW2 people were still sometimes
identified without them.  For example, a decorated WW2 flying hero in the Czech
Republic is known by the last name of na Namest na Hana  (lierally "Of the place
in the Hana Valley"; Namest na Hana is a town tracing its charter to the 12th
century).  Older records, those dating to the Great Moravian era (ca 9th and
early 10th century) rarely have place names that I have encountered, though
these records are exclusively in non-Czech tongues (no written language) or the
newly introduced Old Slavonic.

You might have some luck following the linguistic resources.  A good place to
start might be...

Greetings from Sofya.

I've found a tiny bit of information on period Czech locative bynames that
indicates
the usage of the form "z <placename" and the adjectival form <place>-sky. The
"na
+ <placename>" would be another possiblity, depending on the nature of the place
being referenced.

The original poster is asking for help finding a SCA-registerable period Czech
locative
byname, so he'll need solid documentation for any information we give him. I'm
afraid I didn't find anything useful for this in the entertainingly heated
Wikipedia_talk
debate about whether Wikipedia should use Czech diacritical marks in
English-language
articles about Czech subjects. ;-)

Hello,

I've researching Moscovite 12-13th century garb. I'm looking for both female and
male garb. I've found a rather limited sources on-line. Mostly I found Kievan

illustrations and maybe even patterns? I'll be most grateful.

Thank you so much.

Greetings from Sofya to Lada!

I obviously don't know what websites you've found on-line, but I know at least
one set of webpages that _used_ to be called "Kievan Russian Clothing" was
referring to the historical _time period_ called "Kievan Rus" and was not meant
to be a geographical designation. That is to say, the clothing discussed there
covers all of the lands nominally ruled by the "Grand Prince of Kiev", including
the lands that, in the 12th-13th century, contained the up-and-coming village of
Moscow. (The author of the webpage in question "grew up" in Nizhny Novgorod and
then moved to Lord Novgorod the Great.)

There are enough similarities across the Rus lands in the 12th-13th century,
that you can use information/patterns from Kiev and Novgorod to at least your
early Muscovite wardrobe started. The finer distinctions in temple ring
patterns, favored bead colors, lapti weaving pattern/materials, etc. are
partially addressed here:

http://www.strangelove.net/~kieser/Russia/KRCregions.html

You would be particularly interested in Viatichi tribal dress for the Moscow
area.

At your service,

Greetings All,

I am not an SCA member. I am trying to find one or more members who

These members were wearing Polish garb.

I realize it may be impossible to locate these indaviduals.
