A little challenge, but the intent is friendly:

There are a number of people who have posted to SIG-L that they wish they had
been able to come. I'm deeply interested in seeing SIG U become a regular
event. Maybe annual. Maybe rotating around the Known World. So, I'm wondering
(if you didn't come) what were the factors that prevented you from coming:

1) Was it a financial issue (you couldn't afford the cost)?
2) Was it a time issue (too far to travel and no time in which to do it)?
3) Too much trouble (cost/time/effort) to go through for a one day event? If
so, how close would the event need to be to not be too much?
4) Are there other factors altogether that would affect your ability to come?

I'm also curious whether a different locale and/or a different time of year
might influence people.

BTW, I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty. There were plenty of good/legit
reasons to not make it, but I'm hoping that we can make it easier for folks in
the future.

Thanks,
Paul

For me, it was a combination of airfare costs and work travel
schedule. I might have been able to convince myself to put up the
money to fly to MI from OR, but I had a business trip that kept me
away that weekend. A geographic rotation would be super cool, though.

I would have *loved* to go. I somehow seem to miss out on all
Russian/Slavic themed events!

My reasons for not showing my ugly face was 1) I live in florida and gas is
worth more than gold at present 2) Family obligations keep my leash to lower
georgia, north and central florida and east alabama. If Slavic U where to
come to Meridies or Trimaris I would definitely find a way to get there. We
have a few folks who are seriously interested in Slavic cultures and would
also love to attend. I personally would love to see other cultures in the

I would definitely say SIg U should be a Pennsic, Gulf wars, etc etc type of
event. It would help you guys in having a central location for everyone to
come to you and give you a place to atleast allow us to treat you to the
local hospitality!

It is a bit pricey to fly, but I have enough miles to have been able to make
it, if...
1. I would not have felt guilty for leaving my family behind.
2. I thought I could have survived the weather (I live in Sunny Southern
California and don't understand "cold", "snow", or "coat". "Ice" is
something we use for margaritas. ;-)
3. If it hadn't been so far for a one day event. How about a weekend event
like Collegium is here? I would be willing to travel from Orange County CA
to Vegas, San Diego, or San Francisco for that. Or even to Phoenix, Austin,
or Dallas/Ft. Worth since I have friends there I could visit as well.
4. Our Barony's Yule feast was that day.

I would also have come from Italy but I wasn't able to change my plans and I
didn't even know how to reach the location once arrived in NY city.
Somebody MUST help me next time.

I am a schoolteacher, so getting extra time away during this time of
year isn't possible, unless the event is very close.

If it is interkingdom, it is too much effort for a one day event. In
the rapier end, the weekend is built in with activities from Friday to
Sunday to make it more bang for the buck.

During the summer I would be more likely to make it, if it were closer
to the East Kingdom, that would also increase my chances.

No problem. I'm glad that it happened, wished I was independently
wealthy so that I could participate without real world concerns.

The hassle of organising a passport, let alone affording the air fare
from Australia to the US and accommodation did prevent me from making it.

But, that is one of the downsides of being on an international list.
You can't attend everything you may want to!

No cost of traveling to the event was nit a factor though I would have
had to fly and rent a car.

> 2) Was it a time issue (too far to travel and no time in which to do
> it)?

Timing was an issue. I had committed to attending the company Family
Christmas gathering with my god-daughter. But if I had not committed to
that there is a large event called Boarshead in Northshield that I
likely would have gone to. I think that late in the season isn't the
best time for the event. Also perhaps a bit of research on neighboring
kingdoms major events might be worth the research. I know that avoiding
all conflicts is impossible but every little thing helps with
attendance.

> 3) Too much trouble (cost/time/effort) to go through for a one day

Depending on the draw the event could be similar to other Knowne World
Gatherings ie Friday night, Saturday All Day, even possibly 1/2 day
Sunday. But the numbers kind of dictate things here as finding a site
for multiple days is costly.

> 4) Are there other factors altogether that would affect your ability
> to come?

Nothing comes to mind.

> I'm also curious whether a different locale and/or a different time
> of year might influence people.

I think later in the season isn't great for travel. As to the event
being annual? I would suggest a bi-annual event. The Knowne World Cooks
Collegium and Bardic Contest works on this schedule and it seems to
work alright. It allows for the event to rotate around a bit and gives
the host lots of time to plan for a really good event. So I would
suggest that it be every 2 years.

Although I would definitely have gone if it were in Meridies, since I'm in
Alabama, my biggest reason for not going was that it was just too far away for a
one day event. The cost of flying or driving all the way north in winter from
here just wasn't worth a single day. LOL. Although it would be easier to get
time off during the summer months, I think having a SIG specific event in winter
makes sense--so we can actually pull out the Winter Wear our areas are KNOWN
for. Really enjoying the pictures, wish I could have been there!

I had several reasons:
1) This year, i'd already had a vacation planned over
halloween, so therefore I didn't have the
discretionary income to fly to the midwest this
winter.

2) the only reason I got the halloween vacation was
because it was grandfathered from my old position,
despite my new position that doesn't allow more than 2
days in a row off from August to the end of the year.

3) I didn't want to risk my new position by trying to
slip in another get-away.

4) that weekend is my fiancee's birthday, and he
absolutely could not have gotten the time off to come
with me (he works most saturdays).

To answer your points directly:

A little, but only this year.

I didn't have the vacation time really.

No, I'm actually rather enamoured of the idea of
flying all over the country for SCA events. :-)

Fall is now a fairly poor time of year for me. My
work picks up in August -- even Pennsic is starting to
be questionable. I would much prefer to see a Slavic
U happen in late winter or spring, if we were going to
do it again, which I hope will happen.

FWIW, if we can get someone to do it in An Tir, there
are now reasonably priced flights from Boston to
Portland OR.... :D

Although the day was cold (started out at 28f), the spirits of our
participants were high, and not to be dissuaded by the outer temperature.

49 people attended the event, and 13 classes were held. The "smash hits" of
the day were the Russian Naming Practices class, and both the Russian Garb
classes, since they had at least 15-20 people in them. However, every single
class had people in attendance, with eager and earnest pupils.

The pot luck feast had 20-30 entrees, and featured Pieroshkies, A Hungarian
Pork & Beans dish, a Pottage recipe from 'Medieval food & drink in Poland',
and several yummy loaves of bread, especially black bread. The feast was
also accompanied by a professional story teller, who shared two different
Slavic themed (IIRC) tales.
Finally, although I did not attend, I heard that the post revel at the Inn
was a raging success.

Look for a more complete write-up about the event in the next Slovo!
