I haven't heard anything about Pennsic this year. Is there any news
of the SIG gathering or other Slavic stuff?

The SIG Roundtable, I thought, was fun. We had about
10 people. I brought water and pierogies, and had fun
feeding people (cookin' in the rain, woo hoo!).

One gentleman, who's name I didn't catch, sang us a
lovely song, a folk blessing i believe it was, in
Ukrainian.

Michael of Safia came with extra handouts from his
Russian Archeology 101 class. I have a copy, and will
see if Michael will let me scan it into our Files.

One Micholai, a polish-persona young man from the
East, was our "newbie" of the day, and he should be
joining the List here soon.

In other news, I was delighted with the turnout for my
first time teaching at Pennsic. I had over 30 for my
Kievan Garb class, and I'm thinking next year I might
put together a full Kievan Curricula, since I had far
more fun teaching than I did fighting this year
(Tuesday! Oy vey!). If anyone here on the list took
any of my 3 classes, I'd love some feedback on how I
did! Just shoot me a note privately. The Shopping
Class was much fun, for the Merchants as well as the
students. ArabBoy had no idea that glass bracelets
were period for Russia too! And as a note: I recieved
NO preference, discounts or anything from the
Merchants we visited. I and some others had taken
Luceta's class on the folkloric meanings of Ukrainian
Embroidery, and we were excited to find trim at
Calontir Trim that had the same designs that Luceta
taught. I didn't get to anyone else's classes,
unfortunately, because of household obligations, but I
have Plans for next Pennsic. :D

I thought it was a great Pennsic, despite the weather.

Cheers,
Sfandra Dmitrieva

Sfandra hosted a very nice discussion group this year. ( Our Thank You's to
her!) She even procured some excellent pirougies
And cooked them at the meeting! ( In the rain even.) I didn't get an exact
count on attendance but around 20 is probably a reasonable guess.

I'm sorry I missed the SIG meeting this year! I had to go "into town" mundanely
to buy dinner supplies for my camp, and when I got back to camp to drop off the
purchases, it was already past 3 p.m. and it was raining, and I just needed to
chill out for a bit before starting in on my "cooking night."

But I did really enjoy Sfandra's Kievan Garb class. Yeah, my persona is
Lithuanian and not Rus, but a gal's gotta wear *something*....

Also at Pennsic, I spent $70 on a book that I can't read because it's all in
Lithuanian (except for 10 pages in Russian and 2 pages in English). But that
will have to be a separate post, because I left the book at home and I'm now at
work.

Best wishes,
Lady Patricia of Trakai

I regret I wasn't able to make it to any of the classes or the meeting, My
babysitting duties kept me away from the classes and then for them meeting,
I was busy packing so we could leave the next day.

They only class I was able to make was a 16th Century Ottoman Embroidery
class, which I loved. Learned to sew with Silk and Gold thread...

Though it rained a lot, I really did enjoy pennsic, it was a break from the
real world and when I went back into it, and had to stop at a gas station
where all the alarms were going off, people talking on speakers, music
blaring, I wanted to turn around and go back to the continual drums and the
constant mud.

Greetings Slavic Interest Group!

As usual at this time of year, I'm looking for submissions for the
Fall Slovo. Short articles, reviews, etc. appreciated. The major
restriction is that it must be of interest to SIG.

Let me know if you have anything.

The deadline in October 1.

I have the great pride and pleasure to report that Liudmila
Vladimirova doch has been invited to join the Order of the Laurel in
Caid! Her primary area was 'Russian Studies', with a secondary in
Bardic Arts. (She tells great Russian folk tales and byliny.)

Liudmila was my apprentice for seven years, and was given her
Journeyman's papers by me this spring, at a little private ceremony
with a few Laurels who live near her (in San Diego - I live in L.A.)
who volunteered to be her 'Laurel aunts and uncle'. She has far
exceeded everything I asked her to accomplish, and clearly knows a lot
more than I do now, as she can read the Russian books I have collected
over the years, while I learned what I know from carefully studying
the pictures.

Liudmila will be elevated to the Order on November 10th, at
Coronation. As I hope you can tell from this message, I am a proud
"Mama" and I'm jumping for joy! Hooray for Liudmila!

I am quite happy that Mistress Soraya is so happy. Well, actually I am
quite happy myself -- I was not really expecting it, since she was in
my house for two days prior to the event, and there was no hint of
anything happening. I though it would at least take a few more years
of being active again before I would even get noticed. So there I was,
sitting at a collegium table, having a conversation, when the queen
came over to ask me about my hat. Since the hat was done with quite a
few shortcuts compared to what I usually do, I got embraced and
started explaining it...and then I saw a highly suspicious looking
Soraya and a bunch of laurels behind her. I am not sure I was quite
coherent answering the questions, but it was all very happy. Now I
have to research Russian state occasions and vigil equivalents...And
make a new, no shortcuts hat, and voshvy for a letnik... Does anyone
here have successful letnik voshvy pictures to look at? At least I
have more competent people than me sewing it (thank you, Su and Brianna!)

Liudmila, still getting over it.

Welcome to the Order, Sister. You are officially
"No.6" in the Known World, which is only appropriate
seeing that Soraya is "No.1".

I've been No.5 since 9-17-99 and am most ecstatic to
hand over the Newest Russian Laurel "title" to a new
recipient!!!!!

Well, I had originally done a Russian
studies/Costuming/etc. list but I agree, I've been too
myoptic in scope! But how far should we widen the
scope???? Or, does anyone care in SIG outside a
handful of Peers?

So, by popular vote of the SIG populace, should the
list be ALL Russian Personas who happen to also be
Laurels? And if so, should it be further expanded to
all Peers who are Russian personas? Or is the current
situation OK with everybody?

Well, my previous post was actually a forwarded message from Mordak that he
accidentally sent only to me, so it looks like I'm answering my own question,
but I'm not. I'm answering Mordak's response to my original private question to
him. I hope.

Isn't email fun?

Anyway, I think if anyone should put together a list of Russian (or Slavic)
Laurels, it should be SIG. It might be a useful resource for SIG members
looking for help. And it could also be inspiring for those who are feeling
rather lonely on their Slavic journey.

On the other hand, it could be a lot of work to put together and maintain.

My thought is that it is useful to have a list of
people who have Laurels for Slavic/Russian Studies
(costuming, armoring, whatever), particularly if we
include the specialty.

While keeping track of all Laurels that have
Slavic/Russian PERSONAS is nice, they might not have
gotten their Laurel for Slavic/Russian studies. They
could have gotten it for ANYTHING -- late period
sotelties, perhaps. :-) Worthy area of study, but
not Slavic-specific. :-) So not necessarily useful to
SIG.

Here in my part of the Midrealm there are few Sig members of any level but the
very beginning level. To be able to contact a Peer with questions concerning the
basic parts of a Magyar persona would be of imense help.
Also gives added impetus to all Sig members who can to attend Slavic U this
December in the Barony of Andlecrag(West Michigan) and please if you can teach a
class it would be so very much appreciated.

Fellow SIG members!
The true strength of the SCA in general and SIG in
particular is the free flow of knowledge and ideas!
Both are stronger and each of us as individuals better
than we were before as participants, researchers,
artisans and teachers. Its literally the highest
ideals of the SCA and SIG in action!!! And in the
Slavic University we have a forum to do exactly this
and shine and the next one will probably be out West!

Can anyone think of a more perfect oppurtunity to
spread your knowledge and artistry throughout the
Known World? To say nothing of the boost in reknown
for your craft? The very first Slavic University is a
milestone and the folks who show their talents and
research will rightfully be remembered!

As an ambitious apprentice (which I was) I would have
leapt at an oppurtunity like this! Plus, I just like
talking shop and teaching folks! This is your
chance...will you let it pass by?

I don't suppose there are plans to put the instructor notes on CD or
something, is there?

I checked the website offered and did the math and figured out that I
simply don't have the money to attend Slavic U. If I was in the area I'd
love to go, but the money just isn't there for me right now.

I don't know about others, but I'd be more than willing to pay for a cd
with the instructor handouts on it, whether or not I attended.

Slavic Interest Group (SIG) List

I have made a new photo group on the SIG yahoo website, where I have put my
device. Possibly something we all could do?

Slavic Interest Group (SIG) ListWell... finally after being in the SCA for 6
years I've registered my name and device.

that plus I got a special mention from the Rocket Herald about my "Very nice
15th century russian name and device"

Woohoo! I exist officially now! :)

Congrats on your "official" entry into the Deti
Boiarin! I have yet to achieve that accomplishment but
a friend in another Kingdom has been kindly helping me
towards a successful completion! Is it possible to
     view your new device?

     Fellow SIG members!
The true strength of the SCA in general and SIG in
particular is the free flow of knowledge and ideas!
Both are stronger and each of us as individuals better
than we were before as participants, researchers,
artisans and teachers. Its literally the highest
ideals of the SCA and SIG in action!!! And in the
Slavic University we have a forum to do exactly this
and shine and the next one will probably be out West!

Can anyone think of a more perfect oppurtunity to
spread your knowledge and artistry throughout the
Known World? To say nothing of the boost in reknown
for your craft? The very first Slavic University is a
milestone and the folks who show their talents and
     research will rightfully be remembered!

As an ambitious apprentice (which I was) I would have
leapt at an oppurtunity like this! Plus, I just like
talking shop and teaching folks! This is your
