The Sibling Support Project is pleased to announce SibNet. SibNet is the first and only listserv for and about adult brothers and sisters of people with special health, developmental, and emotional needs. During the past five years, thousands of sibs from all over the world have connected on SibNet! If you’re a sib, we hope you’ll join this especially warm and thoughtful community.
On SibNet, young adult and adult brothers and sisters can share information and discuss issues of common interest. We hope it will also be of interest to parents, service providers and others interested in the well-being of siblings. (Younger brothers and sisters are invited to subscribe to SibKids, a listserv for younger brothers and sisters.)
SibNet, at the very least, is a place where subscribers can:
*Connect with their peers. Many brothers and sisters have never talked to a peer about growing up with a sib who has special needs. On SibNet, members share the good times, the not-so-good times, and everything in between with others who "get it."
*Seek information about local services. Many adult siblings find that they are increasingly involved in the lives of their brothers and sisters, even though they may live in another state. On SibNet, subscribers can inquire about services, programs and policies in the communities where their siblings live. A sister living in Seattle, for instance, can inquire about housing options for her brother who lives in Sacramento.
*Create connections for our siblings. For instance, a subscriber in Tulsa with a brother who loves to bowl in Tampa can inquire about the availability of suitable leagues in the Tampa area.
*Discuss the proper policies agencies should have toward brothers and sisters. In most families, siblings will have the longest-lasting relationship with the person with the special needs. They deserve agencies' attention and consideration.
