While waiting for "Total Recall," I checked out "Minority Report."

Enjoyed the movie. I had seen it before, but it has been a while. The movie was
very well done, with a really cool look.

I've placed a file containing all of the proposed 2012 books and short stories
as well as guidance for obtaining the stories from the library and the internet.
I should caution everyone that a few of the short stories are not available from
the library, usually because they are too new to be in popular collections, and
each of these is available now on the internet. Since internet sources are
notoriously unreliable, I would advise you top consider downloading them while
they are still available.

I picked up "Minority Report," (the story) from the library today. I really
enjoyed it. The copy I got was bound funny, it was long and thin with the
binding on a short side. I had to flip the pages up as I read.

Anyway, the story is different from the movie. There is a lot more detail
concerning how Precrime works. The story makes better sense. I think the movie
lost a lot when they dumbed it down for the masses.

I plan on watching two sci-fi films this week. I will be watching the 1950's
original version of the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" for my sci-fi class and
the movie "Adjustment Bureau" which is according to wikipedia "loosely based on
the Philip K. Dick story "The Adjustment Team." I hope to read the short story
before watching the movie.

Last night I enjoyed watching Universe or Multiverse with Brian Green. The
Physicists theories discussed were fabric of the cosmos, muliverse, duplication,
black energy and string theory. Since multiverse cannot be physically proven or
tested their ideas are only theroies, but food for thought and themes of SciFi.
The visual graphics used for explanations made the program fun to watch.

There's also "Through the Wormhole" with Morgan Freeman. It's such a good series. I think it's on Science channel.

and for the more fantastical...Fringe. We've been catching up on the series and are thoroughly enthralled.

Anyone watch Dark Matter on Science? I've been DVR'ing it but haven't had a chance to watch it (what with catching up on three years of Fringe).

I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving! This is just a
reminder that our November meeting is tonight at 7 PM at the Mt. Lebanon Public
Library. Tonight, we have been moved from our regular meeting room to one of the
Study Rooms at the back of the main floor. The Study Rooms at the Mt. Lebanon
Library are on the main floor in the very back of the stacks, right around the
corner from the rest rooms. The number is posted on or near the door. The
selections this month are "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke and the shorter
works "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick and "Persistence
of Vision" by John Varley. I'm looking forward to seeing eveyone there tonight!

I picked this up based on reviews by Stephen King and Robert Heinlein. As
science fiction, I was disappointed. No science in it at all. However, I have
never read anything written like this before. It is written like a set of
character development essays, each chapter has a different narrator, but in the
end tells a story. It is actually a different take on early Christianity. Mr.
Sturgeon makes a clear statement about organized religion.

The science channel, which I don't get, has apparently aired four episodes of a
new show called "Prophets of Science Fiction." Fortunately for me, the show is
available, for free, on "On Demand." The four episodes aired in November and
the fifth eopisode won't air until February. I watched the first two on Demand
and they were great. The first was on Mary Shelley and it is to be removed from
on Demand soon. The second was on Philip K. Dick and since I watched it I've
had the strong urge to pick up more stories by Dick. The shows cover the
writer's lives and their influence on science fiction. The thrird and fourth
shows are on H.G. Wells and Arthur C. Clarke. February will cover Asimov, Verne
and Heinlein. I encourage anyone who enjoys history and sci-fi and has access
to watch this show.

I recently picked up a CD at the library on Classical science fiction radio.
The CD is called "Science fiction classics [Legends of radio series]." It
inludes 3o minute episodes where they act out sci-fi stories by authors such as:
Heinlein, Asimov, Bester, Bradbury, Dick, Silverberg, Leiber, and more. There
are 10 CDs so there are quite a few shows. The shows aired under the titles of
"Dimension X", "X Minus One", and "Lux Radio Theater." I have found listening
to these classic sci-fi storoies acted out on the radio very entertaining and
would recommend this CD to everyone.

I justy finished reading (actually listening to) the book, "2001: A Space

read it before. However, I still found the movie confusing and wanting. The
places that the book made the least sense to me, the end, the movie made even
less sense. For example, why did he end up in the motel room? What was the
nature of his transformation(s)? The movie seemed to wig out after he regained
control of the ship from HAL and made little sense after that. The images as he
was flying toward Saturn (Jupiter in the book) reminded me of when the ship in
the comedy Spaceballs jumped into super-litespeed and wendt all the way to
"Plaid." Anyway, I still didn't enjoy the mnovie but I very much enjoyed the
book, except for the ending.

I am finally finished with "The Children of the Sky," the recently released

tells a complex story, but without the science I found it lacking. I had trouble
with political relationships among the various factions.

Hey all.

So I did read Doomsday Book and I thought it was good. A bit of science thrown
in but all in all the drop to the Plague was believable (to my imagination). I
wouldn't really recommend it to anyone though. The Gaiman short story I thought
was cute.

Side note:

Any chance anyone knows what is going on with the Univeros server? I already
