Description

Show Racism the Red Card is an organisation based in Britain, opposed to racism, fascism and sectarianism in football and society in general. However, participation in this discussion group from other countries around the world would be very welcome. The extreme level of racist chanting from Spanish "fans" in the 2004 "friendly" match between Spain and England shows that Spain is a country where an organisation like Show Racism the Red Card is badly needed.

The organisation is funded by trade unions, which has enabled it to send out videos featuring interviews with famous black and white footballers to every school. It also produces free copies of an annual magazine that also includes interviews with players as well as some articles by other anti-racists with more political experience to give it more bite.

The organisation was founded by Ged Grebby, who like me (Steve Wallis) was a member of a revolutionary socialist organisation called the Militant Tendency (that led the 18-million strong mass non-payment campaign that defeated the poll tax and brought down Margaret Thatcher).

Show Racism the Red Card organised around a Scottish Trade Union Council demonstration against racism in Glasgow in 2004, at which a footballer spoke, that I attended. It produced posters advertising the event, and produced placards for the demo.

Note that we oppose sectarianism between mainly Catholic Celtic fans and mainly Protestant Rangers fans in Glasgow.

I also run Manchester United fans and FC United discussion groups and am involved with the Independent Manchester United Supporters Asociation.
