Tom Wishon is showing a single bend shaft on page 59 of his 2009 catalog, #605-PT-SB.  Hope that helps.

Subject: ShopTalk: Single bend shaft

I have a guy looking for right-handed  single bend putter shaft to replace the broken one in an old Callaway putter. The shaft is pretty much the same one in my old Ping Z-blade. Ping made Z-blades with three differently bent shafts. One with just a slight bend, one with a really big bow and one in between. That's the one he's looking for. The shafts in Pings were secured in an angled hole by smashing a bearing into it. I'm not sure about the Callaway - haven't seen the head yet. There's no hosel.

I did a quick search for a single bend shaft but didn't find one. Hope one of y'all have an idea.

Thanks

TFlan

I received this today from a young woman looking for help, anyone
know anything about these irons?
John

Hi, My name is Jill. I was emailing you regarding some clubs I have
inherited from my Grandpa. I can't find much research on them and was
wondering if you would know anything to help me out. I have almost a
complete set from a guy named Tony Lema. I tried to look him up and
only found a little info on him. Is this something that could be of
value to me? I have clubs 1,2,3,4,6,8,9 and a dual wedge.

If you could tell me anything, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

Jill

I have this hickory shaft about 1930 vintage with the
following sole inscription. Model Excellence 1000
Golf Design USA. It has a steel washer in the middle
of the sole. It has the physicist name JTATE inscribed.
Anyone that dealt in antique putters would know anything
about this putter and is it rare?

I'm guessing these are the square-toe irons. A quick Internet search
turned up a couple of related finds:

* Another almost-complete set (2-8 plus PW, also a couple of fairway
woods) listed on eBay for $99. No bids yet.

* A complete set (2-dualWedge) listed on an antique club site
(<http://www.clubsofdistinction.com/>http://www.clubsofdistinction.com/)
for $650.

I'm no expert, so I would not venture a guess myself. Just noting a
couple of data points.

Hope this helps,
DaveT

I had a guy send me a note today asking how to make his own ribbed
grips. I searched to archives for your (?) post on this and couldn't
find. Can you resend or did anyone save? I seem to recall a piece of
wire secured by tape but not sure.

Though you can use wire, you need to be very careful about the
thickness of the wire. The USGA only allows a 0.040" rib height.

I would appreciate any one that can give me some help.
I have located the son of this phycist that had this special

Use string=2C and secure it with tape before adding the grip. A ball of st=
ring (or twine) costs very little and can be used for lots of grips.

I have a guy looking for right-handed single bend putter shaft to replace =
the broken one in an old Callaway putter. The shaft is pretty much the same=
one in my old Ping Z-blade. Ping made Z-blades with three differently bent=
shafts. One with just a slight bend=2C one with a really big bow and one i=
n between. That's the one he's looking for. The shafts in Pings were secure=
d in an angled hole by smashing a bearing into it. I'm not sure about the C=
allaway - haven't seen the head yet. There's no hosel.=20
I did a quick search for a single bend shaft but didn't find one. Hope one =
of y'all have an idea.=20
Thanks

I should have mentioned that the single bend shafts I found at various sites aren't like the Ping/Callaway. Those are trimmed somehow, or the hole is drilled in the head in a way, that makes the shaft angle out over and towards the center of the head. No doubt its the drilled hole in the head that makes this work. I don't have a bending fixture any more or I'd just make a shaft for the guy. But, this is the extent of my efforts.

Hi Mykey,
Long time no talk.
If all else fails you might try this guy;

Years ago, I thought if I took a length of string or some kind of cord or wire and laid it along the length of the shaft, then slipped a grip over it I'd get a nice "reminder" grip. After experimenting with it for a while I found that if I laid the cord on a piece of double stick tape, then put the tape/string on the shaft - the tape holding the string/cord from slipping, I could slide a rubber grip on easily.

I didn't pay much attention to "the rules". What the hell, I'm not playing in tournaments sanctioned by USGA at the time. This was just an experiment to use round grips for reminders. It works o.k.

Use string, and secure it with tape before adding the grip.  A ball of string (or twine) costs very little and can be used for lots of grips.

Though you can use wire, you need to be very careful about the
thickness of the wire. The USGA only allows a 0.040" rib height.

Thanks Dave (and Bob B). I'll pass this information along to young Jill.
John

I'm guessing these are the square-toe irons. A quick Internet search turned up a couple of related finds:

* Another almost-complete set (2-8 plus PW, also a couple of fairway woods) listed on eBay for $99. No bids yet.
* A complete set (2-dualWedge) listed on an antique club site ( http://www.clubsofdistinction.com/) for $650.

I'm no expert, so I would not venture a guess myself. Just noting a couple of data points.

Hope this helps,

Hi, My name is Jill. I was emailing you regarding some clubs I have inherited from my Grandpa. I can't find much research on them and was wondering if you would know anything to help me out.  I have almost a complete set from a guy named Tony Lema. I tried to look him up and only found a little info on him. Is this something that could be of value to me? I have clubs 1,2,3,4,6,8,9 and a dual wedge.

If you could tell me anything, I would appreciate it!

Subject: ShopTalk: Built a long driver

OK, I built a long driver last night. I used stuff I had on hand. A 199g
offset Dynacraft Avatar 460cc head that sits quite closed, on a UST Low Carb 52g
S flex shaft.

I put on my favorite grip, which is a bit heavy at 65g. It weighs 322g and
swingweight is D8 at 47.75". Obviously a 40g grip would get the weight way down
there where Bernie recommends it, albeit with a heavy head. My intention is to
choke down to 46.5 - 47, and have a counterweight effect.

The freq is 236 cpm which is about 6.5 on the PCS scale, so that seems stout
since I fit to a 4.7 in my 44" driver.

Wish me luck! :)

OK, let's put this out of its misery. TFlan, You're probably right. So...

I got only one copy of my message.
I assume nobody else got a resubscription notice.
An unexplained anomaly.
Let's leave well enough alone.

Cheers!

Subject: ShopTalk: TaylorMade wins wedge appeal with USGA

Saw this in Golfweek.
John

The U.S. Golf Association has reversed its original decision and will
allow TaylorMade to sell interchangeable U-groove faces for its TP
xFT wedges in 2010.

The new xFT wedges with interchangeable faces will start appearing in
golf shops in December. The faces can be changed with a torque wrench
that quickly loosens and tightens two screws on the back of the
wedges. The interchangeable faces are flat in the front and look like
normal wedge faces.

After the USGA informed TaylorMade in October that xFT faces with
large U grooves could not be sold in 2010 - although sale of
smaller-groove faces was permitted - the company filed a formal
appeal.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2011, all irons and wedges with large U grooves no
longer can be made or distributed by golf club manufacturers.
However, the big grooves will be widely available in 2010.

TaylorMade based its case on this 2010 availability, arguing that
interchangeable wedge faces should be subject to the same deadlines
as regular wedges.

New Itomic grips here http://clubmaker-online.com/itomic.html .
Introductory priced at $3.48 each. Available in black, white, blue,
or red. I'm starting out with the black model unless enough interest
in the colors. Super soft (but firm) feel and very tacky and long
lasting.
Very similar to a colorful grip line that is priced at $16 each.

Nice fairway woods and hybrids from Alpha. I play the 19 hybrid and
even though a fairly deep face design, don't have any trouble hitting
it from most lies. Nice off the tee if you need something about 200
and straight. I've read some very good feedback on the fairway woods
at different discussion groups I sponsor, too.

It looks like my MX-23 conform and so do the MP-30 irons my son plays. My other
son has KZG CB and
they do not conform. Not that anyone of us is playing professional matches.
Just nice to know if a
set conforms or not.

Now our Vokey wedges do not meet the 2010 groove rule, although the heads are
about 5 years old (pre
SM).

Harry and Everyone:
Now that the USGA has their web reference up to note conformity to the new =
scoreline rule, there is bound to be some confusion. Everyone needs to kee=
p in mind the fact that all EXISTING models of heads of 25* and higher loft=
do not have to conform to the new scoreline rule until Jan 1, 2011. Most =
of us have been starting the changeover of our existing models now so that =
we can have enough time to get them through what is a VERY difficult confor=
mity process thanks to the incredibly small +/- tolerances for the new scor=
eline configuration. As a result, many, and I mean many, of the companies'=
models are getting an initial non conformity ruling from which they all ha=
ve to then keep working with their foundries to get sets to the USGA which =
finally do make it through this incredibly tight inspection process. By in=
credibly tight tolerance, I mean that the top edge radius of just any two o=
f the lines on any two heads in a set can be off by 0.001" and the whole se=
t does not pass.

Previous to this new scoreline rule, the USGA only checked 3 heads from a f=
ull set of irons, now they are checking every line on every head in a set w=
ith scoreline tolerances which are much smaller than ever before. So many =
companies have had to remake sample numerous times before they get them app=
roved. At the same time, this also means if it is that hard to make ONE se=
t correctly, what do you think the odds are that every head of all the many=
production heads are going to be within the rules? Not much, I can assure=
you because the USGA really created a real nightmare for the club companie=
s with this new rule.

USGA 2010 Conforming Irons and Wedges Database - http://www.usga.org/InfoCl=
ubsDB/index.asp
It looks like my MX-23 conform and so do the MP-30 irons my son plays. My =
other son has KZG CB and they do not conform. Not that anyone of us is pla=
ying professional matches. Just nice to know if a set conforms or not.

Now our Vokey wedges do not meet the 2010 groove rule, although the heads a=
re about 5 years old (pre SM).

Harry and Everyone:

Now that the USGA has their web reference up to note conformity to the new scoreline rule, there is bound to be some confusion.  Everyone needs to keep in mind the fact that all EXISTING models of heads of 25* and higher loft do not have to conform to the new scoreline rule until Jan 1, 2011.  Most of us have been starting the changeover of our existing models now so that we can have enough time to get them through what is a VERY difficult conformity process thanks to the incredibly small +/- tolerances for the new scoreline configuration.  As a result, many, and I mean many, of the companies’ models are getting an initial non conformity ruling from which they all have to then keep working with their foundries to get sets to the USGA which finally do make it through this incredibly tight inspection process.  By incredibly tight tolerance, I mean that the top edge radius of just any two of the lines on any two heads in a set can be off by 0.001” and the whole set does not pass.

Previous to this new scoreline rule, the USGA only checked 3 heads from a full set of irons, now they are checking every line on every head in a set with scoreline tolerances which are much smaller than ever before.  So many companies have had to remake sample numerous times before they get them approved.  At the same time, this also means if it is that hard to make ONE set correctly, what do you think the odds are that every head of all the many production heads are going to be within the rules?  Not much, I can assure you because the USGA really created a real nightmare for the club companies with this new rule.

USGA 2010 Conforming Irons and Wedges Database - http://www.usga.org/InfoClubsDB/index.asp

It looks like my MX-23 conform and so do the MP-30 irons my son plays.  My other son has KZG CB and they do not conform.  Not that anyone of us is playing professional matches.  Just nice to know if a set conforms or not.

Now our Vokey wedges do not meet the 2010 groove rule, although the heads are about 5 years old (pre SM).

Aloha all! I am looking for a Driver length Tour Exotics YS 5.1 "A"
flex pull out. I could settle for a Graphite Design YS 5 in "RR" flex
or the Cobra logo YS 5.1 in "A" flex if you have one. Thanks, Keith

OK, let's put this out of its misery. TFlan, You're probably right. So...

I got only one copy of my message.
I assume nobody else got a resubscription notice.
An unexplained anomaly.
Let's leave well enough alone.

Cheers!

This will perhaps provide a laugh. Your question "Did anybody else . . . etc." will gather responses saying no, I didn't. You aren't asking who didn't - you're asking who did. Wanna bet?
