San Francisco Bay Area shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) mailing list is an online forum aimed at the shakuhachi community in the Bay Area. The Bay Area is one of the most active areas outside of Japan for shakuhachi, with more than a handful of people teaching and performing a variety of styles, traditional and modern. Because of the strong local activity, many prominent players frequently pass through to perform and teach. We are fortunate to have Grandmasters Kurahashi Yoshio and Riley Lee as two of the more frequent visitors. The primary purpose of this mailing list is to allow local players, teachers, and students to easily communicate and build an even stronger community. However, this list is also for anyone, in any locale, who wishes to share information about performing and learning shakuhachi. Postings about concerts, visiting teachers, non-local shakuhachi events, as well as discussions about techniques, recordings, and history are strongly encouraged. Shakuhachi players and enthusiasts everywhere are very welcome to join and participate.
