i was told beer and painkillers were going to be given out.
i don't have any poems, except for the one's i stoled from others.... let
me look around.
how the hell did i get on this list? i'm not complaining, only about the
beer and painkillers part.
we'll try this for awhile.
here's my poem, this one might be stolen, the memory is not what it used to
be.
sorry to phil ochs
-------------
great wars happen
only once in generations
that forgot the last one,
while burning the dead
we looked back
into nostalgia
made fashionably
colored and meaningless again
to say goodbye, and
thanks for nothing
when there was nothing
left to fight
we watched you wave
goodbye, tragedy
being like a capote story,
noticed only outside
of a small circle of friends.

i'd like to rest my heavy head tonight
on a bed of california stars
i'd like to lay my weary bones tonight
on a bed of california stars
they hang like grapes on vines that shine
and warm the lovers glass like friendly wine
so, i'd give this world
just to dream a dream with you
on our bed of california stars

Information Overload is not a good thing unless you're a National Security
Agency computer.
I've been getting a lot of feedback that there are too many posts in BAM.
Since this is only the first day for the list, we don't know if this will be
the norm or aberration. Stress levels are on the rise and prozac has been
flying off pharmacist's counters.
What are the options to deal with too many posts?
1.) If you wish to ride it out and surf the posts then the Digest version of
BAM is highly recommended. This compiles all the days posts into one email
everyday. This greatly reduces the clutter of your inbox and keeps you
relatively sane. Email d@... with the word DIGEST in the
subject field and I will switch you over to the digest. Or you may do it
yourself, instructions at http://poeticdream.com/bam.htm
2.) BAM is currently being archived on the web at
http://www.egroups.com/list/bam You may unsubscribe from the list and browse
through the posts at your leisure with a web browser. The disadvantage is
that you can't reply back to the list.
3.) If you're technically proficient, you may use an email filter in your
email client to route all BAM posts to a separate folder for review when you
have the time. This depends on your email client. Don't ask me how to do
this.
I would like to thank everyone for being a part of this list and
contributing their voice to this forum. We shall remain an open forum and
let the collective voice of everyone on this list decide where we should be
going as a far flung, diverse group of poets all around the Bay Area and
beyond. We either crash and burn or thrive. We range from academic to slam
poets and everything in between so this is the melting pot of poetry, take a
sip sometime.

If you have a fascination with poetry email lists there are two others I
would like to refer you to...
Socopoet: Maintained by Layne Russell, the list primarily covers the lovely

it's Sonoma County. Information can be found at http://www.sonic.net/~layne

and here's a recent poem written after weaving some strings for a book of
poetry soon to come out.
of knots, beads and water
on the sixth knot
I drop a bead along
the rolled fiber
a land of many waters blue
bead down the string
a seventh knot
irregular
but true
like words spread
in their own yearned for
intrinisc rythmn
I yield to an orange bead
next after two knots
too warm for me
bobbing along Lake Michigan
past lighthouses converted to
new electronics barely manned
a knot a knot a knot a knot
it was a foggy night and Wisconsin
white head beams red stop lights glimmered
near our shore
refractions
moist sand pearls falling towards
black
I am finished
string of words
lime tides

Howdy all,
Guess I'll introduce myself with a poem. This one will be appearing
in the next issue of Haight Ashbury Literary Review:
The Menacing Shade of Sunset
purples
oranges blending to rose shades and shadows
twinges my stomach with old butterflies
dusk, that dismal light
dusk, that menacing shade
my childhood of running and hiding
waiting behind doors and walls
waiting for signs of my grandfather’s mood
six years old and full of fear
six years old and hiding from bloody bruising love
it wasn’t love. I know that now
I survived with
speed, agility and wit
staying one step ahead
staying just out of reach
waiting for his drunken sleep to calm his temper
at sunset, I recount
my rose colored prayers
like thumb and finger over smooth rosary beads:
deliverance
redemption
salvation
one night of peace
words no child should understand
at dusk
I thank my god for listening

Wow, another splendid forum for sharing of poesie...
Here's something short and seasonal...

animated by autumn's fingers
snapping slender veins from branches
shivering beneath the gilded gaze

Soft Light
Softly, in your arms
Caressing the pain
away
The hurt of separation
So long, such longing
And now as if-
it never was
Quietly connecting
in the warmth
Of each other's embrace
Soft light in the room
Blissful shadows of
embracing
Starlight and still
night
Together in the
night, remembering
Reconnecting
Restoration in
the soft light

Red Strawberries
In red, you came
In red
We were together
Dancing in the
dark light
Candles, waxen, flickering
Glinting glaze in your
lustrous glance
In red, ravishing-
Red
In red, you--
swirled, jived
Against my black
Connived
Among the candles
and high fashion
Collision
In red, devouring-
Fresh strawberries
In the winter
Of the year

Hello Bay Area Poets,
I'm writing to tell you about Wordslingers, a three day festival up in
Nevada City (3 hours from SF via rte.s 80 and then 49). Bay Area poets (Dan
Bellm, Forrest Hamer) as well as fiction writers (Maxine Hong Kingston and
Molly Giles and Jim Houston, et. al.) will be there, and we have
songwriters and storytellers rounding out the mix. (Also Francisco Alarcon,
JoAnn Levy, Karen Joy Fowler, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, Lisa Moon, Donna
Hanelin, and more.) There are readings on Friday night (with a gospel
choir), all day Saturday, a big one on Saturday night, and then historical
programming, a live old-fashioned radio show about the Pony Express, and a
panel on the Asian American Experience in the West on Sunday. Also family
programming all day Sat. with Mother Goose, Mark Twain, The New Sierra
Nevada Rangers and others. Throughout the whole weekend there will be a
book fair (Poetry Flash and the Sacramento Poetry Center have booths, as
well as SF's fine arts bookstore Califia), book arts displays, an alphabet
parade, food booths and good cheer.
It's coming up soon, Oct 9, 10 & 11, at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City
(325 Spring St.) right in the downtown area. Tickets range from $8 - $15
for each single event and a ticket for the whole weekend is only $35.
If you're interested, e-mail back or give me a call at 530-470-0852. I'm
the exec. director of Literature Alive! which puts this on, and I can give
you more info or reserve tickets for you.
Last year Jane Hirshfield said it was the best event of its kind (people
reading in big groups) that she'd ever been to. One of the things we do
differently is to focus on specific words - each set of readers (six
people: one poet, fiction writer, songwriter, story teller, historical
interpretor, and a wild card) gears their 12 minutes to a particular word.
The interpretations are sometimes very specific and sometimes extremely
tangential, but it makes for an interesting mix and it's a lot of fun.
This year's words are "congregation" for Friday night, "lode,"
"assumption," and "union" for Saturday daytime, and "rush" for Saturday
night.
I hope to see you there.
Best,
Molly Fisk

Sanity Went on Vacation
with thanks to Kim H.
Sanity went on vacation.
He hopped a flight to Cabo San Lucas
with a maxed out credit card. Checked into
a hotel he couldn't afford and went out
to pick up chicks on the beach.
Sanity thought of calling his wife,
but he was on vacation, so
he didn't give a shit. Chugged another
beer, knocked back another shot
of gold tequila -- only the best --
ate the worm at the bottom of the bottle,
crawled inside, where he felt safe,
rolled a joint and stayed there
waiting for the next disaster.
Sanity got depressed and wondered
what his life would become, obsessed
over what to do next, who to call,
where to go, the mistakes he made
the mistakes would make,
the people he's hurt,
though he never met them.
He felt like a fuck-up.
Sanity wondered how
long this vacation
would take before he got to go
back to work. He wanted to go to
an AA meeting. But he didn't --
too much like work.
He wanted to commit suicide.
Sanity went back to the bar
ordered another round. Got belligerent
with the bar tender, got thrown out
onto the dark street, got into a fight
beat himself up, wandered among
the closed shops, peered into windows
at things he could not have,
feelings he could not feel
people he could not love
opportunities he missed
He hated himself.
Sanity did the same thing
day after day after day.
He couldn't understand why
the results were always the same.
Sanity remembered it was time
to go. It felt like work. He packed his bags, stole
the towels and sheets from his hotel room,
left without settling the bill,
stiffed the cab driver on the way to the airport.
He started to feel better on the plane,
actually smiled at a small child,
got off the plane in San Francisco,
took a cab to his office,
called his wife,
settled back to work.
Everything will be OK.

Welcome to BAM,
We finally kick off the poetry email list for the discussion of all things
poetry in the SF Bay Area. Thank you for being a part of this forum which
will hopefully promote awareness of your fellow poets living next door or on
the other side of the Bay - and hopefully keep you attuned to the latest
poetry events occurring all around the area.
Complete instructions and rules can be found at
http://poeticdream.com/bam.htm but here's a quick overview.
This list is meant to be an open forum for anything related to SF Bay Area
poetry. Currently there are over two hundred subscribers to the list so
please be aware that any message you post to the list goes to a large and
diverse audience with many different interests and tastes in poetry. The
bottom line is to be nice to others. We do not mean to censor but if your
posts incite a lot of bad karma, appropriate action will be taken.
To post a message to the list, any email sent to bam@... will be
