Isabelle Maynard, author of CHINA DREAMS University of Iowa Press,
l996), continues to write - her new book of short stories, LOVE IN THE
SEVENTH DECADE, is complete and seeking a publisher. Her stories have
appeared in many magazines - the latest two in ZYZZYVA and THE CRESCENT
REVIEW. They have also been published in five anthologies. She has given
many readings from CHINA DREAMS, starting with Black Oak Books and
others in the Bay Area as well as in Beijing, China and Tel-Aviv,
Israel. She is currently working on her third book of short stories
IMMIGRANT TALES. In between she is studying the piano and her art work
will be exhibited at the Emeryville Celebration of the Arts in October.
Rich Yurman has been committing poetry for nearly 50 years, ever since
his sophomore English teacher accused him or plagiarizing his first
poem. She could cite no source but simply felt it was too good to be the
work of such an indifferent student. Many editors have joined in her
assessment since. Nonetheless Rich's poems have appeared with many of
the usual suspects in many of the usual venues. One volume of poems (A
PERFECT PAIR: he whispered, she shouted) was self-published in 1989. A
couple of hundred poems in 80+ magazines may seem a bit thin for 50
years, but it's been a fun trip any way you do the accounting. Poetry
remains a subversive activity.
Media Alliance
is the benefiting organization.
Glenn Ingersoll, Katharine Harer, and Clive Matson are coordinators;
Paul Geffner is the producer.
