Kinfolks & Citizens:
This is the first time I have brought up Elaine Donneelly,s CMR Report and I've
been missing excellent analysis of military goings on.
I n this report she warns that REP. Barney Frank is boring into Defense
Appropriation Bills to insert repeal of the Clinton 1993 Eligibility Law known
as don't ask don't tell. The only high official known to be against repeal is
General James Terry Conway Commandant Of the Marine Corps. Some of us with
Arkansas origins/connections can be proud of this General born 12/26/47 in
Walnut Ridge,AR.He graduated from SE MO. State University with a BS in
Psychology and commissioned in 1970.
As a former Infantryman in the Paratroopers,Marine Corps, and National Guard I
would be mortified to see a man flouncing around in the uniform of those
services. It would even be embarrassing to office pinkies.
I urge you to contact your Congressman to stop this effort to change the
Military.Diversity is already creating deadly problems.Open homosexuality will
make recruiting and retention more difficult and result in scorn of our Military
serving in the the Muslim countries.

Dear Mr. Medley,
I take no pleasure in saying this, but CMR’s constant and repeated warnings
about the dangers of political correctness and egalitarianism in the military
now have been validated. According to NPR and other reports, Army
professionals who were concerned about the bizarre behavior of Maj. Nidal
Hassan─discussing in a meeting whether he was capable of interpreting his
religion as a mandate to kill─did nothing to intervene. They were “worried
[that] they might be ‘discriminating’ against Hasan because of his seemingly
extremist Islamic beliefs.”
Countless times CMR has warned of life-and-death problems that can happen when
uniformed officials fail to address elevated risks associated with political
correctness in the military. We did not expect that the lives of 13 military men
and women and one unborn child would be lost due to official tolerance of a
self-described “Soldier of Allah” in uniform, but that is what has happened.
Authorities must guard the due process rights of the shooter, which is the only
way to ensure that justice is done. At the same time, members of Congress and
President Obama must hold accountable all military officials, starting with the
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, and the Army’s Chief
of Staff, Gen. George Casey. Both have put the culture of the armed forces at
risk with numerous statements advocating “diversity” first and the needs of
the military second.
The presence of a radical jihadist in the military did not happen in a vacuum.
It is a reflection of misplaced priorities, as stated by Gen. Casey in a
much-criticized comment about “diversity” in the aftermath of the Fort Hood
Massacre. How else to explain the tolerance of Maj. Hassan, whose disturbing
slide presentation about Islamism in June 2007 reflected a descent into
fanatical madness? No matter what the issue is, when officials make decisions
that assign higher priority to lesser concerns, favoring individuals at the
expense of the whole, they undermine key elements of military culture, meaning
“how things are done.”
This is the point of my article for National Review Online, linked below.
Small, departures from standard practice may appear harmless, but unjustified
exemptions from uniform standards undermine morale for others who perceive
favoritism. Start making gratuitous exceptions for some, and similar
accommodations will have to be granted for all in a variety of policy matters,
sacrificing standards and principles that have made our military the best in the
world. The culture of the military must not be taken for granted—it could be
irreversibly degraded in a single generation.
Since the founding of CMR in 1993, we have constantly applied consistent
principles to a wide variety of issues affecting all branches of the service.
CMR advocates high standards and sound priorities in the making of military
personnel policies, which must not be compromised for any reason. With your
help we will continue to put the spotlight on incremental, misguided policies
that compromise standards and priorities, degrading the culture of the only
military we have.

A. Political Correctness in the Military
The horrific terrorist attack at Fort Hood has drawn attention to the disturbing
tendency of Pentagon leaders to decide personnel matters in terms of
“diversity” first, military necessity second. This article, featured on
National Review Online and highlighted by CBS News, warns of the unintended
consequences of a recent decision to allow uniform exemptions for soldiers of
the Sikh and Muslim faith:
· Sikhs, Muslims, and PC Taken to an Extreme
B. The Pentagon
1. This front page Washington Times story by Rowan Scarborough reported that
the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Conway, supports the 1993
Eligibility Law and is working behind the scenes to oppose its repeal:
· EXCLUSIVE: Marine leads 'Don't ask, don't tell' fight
We have heard that like-minded members of Congress were pleased to see the
article, even though Gen. Conway did not seek public comment on his position.
2. The White House has nominated Major General Clifford Stanley, USMC (Ret.),
to serve as Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (P&R). In
this key position within the OSD, General Stanley will prepare and provide
congressional testimony, and advise the Secretary of Defense on all military
personnel policies, including legislation to repeal Section 654, Title 10, the
1993 Eligibility Law. General Stanley's Senate confirmation hearing has been
set for November 19.
C. Congress
1. The Hill reported yesterday that plans are being made to include
legislation to repeal the 1993 Eligibility Law, mislabeled “Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell” in next year’s National Defense Authorization Bill (NDAA).
The Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) reportedly will hold hearings on
legislation to repeal the 1993 Eligibility Law, possibly in December. The
timetable could be tight due to the time needed to consider the Stanley
nomination and the Thanksgiving recess. House Armed Services (HASC) leaders,
who said that hearings would be contingent on the confirmation of a new Under
Secretary for P & R., could schedule them at any time following that
confirmation, most likely in connection with the annual defense authorization
process early next year.
2. The gay magazine the Advocate has quoted Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) laying
out plans to repeal the 1993 Eligibility Law as part of the Defense
Authorization Bill in 2010. Frank also suggested that this could be done even
without a companion Senate bill:
“‘It would make no sense’ to introduce a repeal bill in the Senate. What
will happen is people will waste their time trying to get cosponsors of that
bill from people who will vote for us anyway,’ he said. Frank added that
getting 60 votes in the Senate for repeal was still ‘no slam dunk.’ But he
‘fully expects’ that repeal language will be included in the bills when they
are reported out of their respective Armed Services Committees next year.”
This is interesting, since an earlier article in the Advocate reported that
Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) was working with the White House and thinking
about being the lead sponsor of repeal legislation in the Senate, if he could
find a Republican (RINO) co-sponsor. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA) is lead
sponsor of the free-standing House bill, H.R. 1283, which Murphy says has more
than 180 co-sponsors.
D. The Media
1. As reported in the Advocate, Sen. Lieberman has been influenced by an essay
published in Joint Forces Quarterly, which was written by an Air Force Colonel
who won an essay contest at the National Defense University. As I wrote in
this article for Human Events, this was the most blown-up non-story since the
Colorado Balloon Boy:
· Media Spins “Pentagon” Support for Gays in the Military
2. The Boston Globe followed that report with another overblown story
trumpeting a warmed-over Palm Center project dressed up with the name of the
RAND corporation. Here is the rest of the story:
· RAND Lends Brand to Palm Center Polemic

The Kitsap Sun has, again, done a remarkable job of supporting veterans Day.For
the first time our non-profit foundation,"Prisoners In The Far East World War II

by visitors and leaders of other organizations related to Military Service. This

Philippines.Refined with every presentation as the Zendejas family prepares to
take his play by invitation to Japan next summer.
However, the article in today's (12/Nov) Kitsap Sun about Bataan Death numbers
are erroneous.70,000 is mentioned as AmericanMilitary participating.Roger

in response to my request for numbers on the Death March wrote:"The consensus
among the researchers like me is that the count on the Bataan Death March was
500-800 (deaths) for the Americans and 7000-10,000 for the Filipinos. Some
50,000 Filipino Military died over the next six months.A shocking but true
report about Camp O'Donnell."
On 8 December 1941 there were over 31,000 American Military in the
Philippines. The US Army 31st INF.RGT. and other US units were on Bataan.12,000
Americans fought on Bataan.1,500 died in battle or from starvation and

My dad, Joe Dytrt, passed away this past Thursday, October 29, 2009. He was
always very proud of his service in Korea, and enjoyed regaling his grandson (my

you for your service.

In order to understand you must start at the lowest message and read up. I sent
it out to share a joke to with lots of folks and I will also send this to others
who may have an interest. == When Jean and I went to San Diego, CA several years
ago, in order to attend a reunion of one of the Basic school classes that I had
the privilege to have been one of the "Supervisory Officers" assigned to lead
them class through Eight Months of instruction. She and I have been invited
every two years and been fortunate enough to have actually attended each time.
They honor us by seating us at the front table where the important folks sit. (I
sit at the very last seat and Jean sat next to the Commanding General of Marine
Corps Base San Diego, Ca.) They got along real well and included me in some
time. This is the General that they are talking about that is now a Lt. Gen
sitting with JCS as J-3. This could be a long way up to making Four stars. We
have been invited to another Reunion next Fall at Quantico. (If we can work it
out I hope our Daughter, Karen, can go with me.) It is a Formal table with all
the Ruffles and Flourishes. The ceremony is quite impressive. We will invite
him and I hope he will attend. (I have pictures of he and Jean. With me standing
off on the side.) The author of this letter is the president of this class.
4-60. I will take questions. Semper Fi Tom P.

Wonderful.
He is the J-3 on the Joint Staff, in essence the COO of the JCS. I will continue
to watch his rise and keep you posted so we can act accordingly when the time
comes.
We are very blessed. The Corps has some marvelous leaders emerging to the top
along with Jay, such as Generals Allen and Dunsford, neither of whom ever
appeared in the blue book as a major general. One comment made last evening by a
former Assistant Commandant was that he has observed over twenty capstone
classes for new general/flag officers over the years. Now in a consulting
capacity, he said this year's group, all war fighters, was extraordinary which
certainly bodes well for the Country.

I reminded him of his membership in 4-60 and before I could say anything more,
he said he had our bag/case out yesterday (Fred's nice choice of gift!!). May be
there is a role for him in our reunion?
His situation, in my view, is such that he could end up anywhere with a fourth

Hello Dortea and Bill,
I just got off the phone with Johns wife, I am sorry that I did not get her
name, i began a sneexing fit when she introduced herself. She told me that the
surgery was successful. All the cancer was removed. He does have a bag. John is
in much pain and they are unable to give him enough pain medication. He is in
rehab and goes to exercise everyday and they are now not giving him the pain
medication until just before he goes to exercise, because the pain was so great
he couldn't exercise and unless he does exercise and is able to walk well wtih a
walker he can not go home. John has very bad days and when he does he gets very
difficult. That sounds like my Cody! But he also has a good day now and then. I
got his room phone number, but she said that I should not call for a few days
and even then she did not know how he would react. He might not even speak to
me.
In time, if I get a good reaction, i will send you his numver. In the

Subject: A/1/7 Korea (1950-53)
Arty,
My name is Paul "Mick" Beckwith, LtCol, USMC (Retired). I was a Marine from
1981-2008.
I ran across your Reunion in Semper Fidelis Memorandum for Retired Marines.
The family of Major John Bushrod Wilson Jr. (Retired - Deceased) has requested
my assistance in obtaining information on his military career. Maj Wilson
served in WWII and was with 7th Marines in Korea. The story he told his family
was that he survived an attack in Korea from an explosion and found himself
somehow buried in dead bodies. The family knows little more of his military
service.
His father was BGen John Bushrod Wilson, Sr (Retired - Deceased) and served as
an Assistant Division Commander on Iwo Jima. His Uncle was LtCol James Philip
Wilson (Retired - Deceased) and I know little of his service other than that he
was a Marine and fought in the same two wars.
Yes, this is a bg time Marine Corps family and they have seeked my assistance in
finding out what I can for them.
I do not know how extensive your military memories or documents are from 1/7,
but anything helps. I have to assume he would have been a Lieutenant or Captain
at the time. He may have been with another battalion as well... 2/7 ? 3/7?
but his family seems to recall 1/7 very vividly.
I see that you live in Carlsbad, I live in San Marcos. If you have anything, we
could definitely meet over a beer or two to discuss.
Respectfully,
Mick Beckwith

Robert Frank's service was very uplifting. The minister's message included
Roberts love of the Marines and the stories he loved to tell about them. At the
graveside service there was a rendition of taps and two Marines in dress blues
that folded the flag, then presented it to Renett. There was an honor guard from
the North Texas Chosin Few consisting of Ed Miller, Bill Kelly, Leo Perez, and
Orace Edwards. Ed Miller conducted the ceremony which honored Robert, the
Marines, and the Chosin Battle. It concluded with a final salute to Robert and a
presentation of a Chosin Few Memorial Plaque by Bill Kelly to Renett. All of the
people that came up to us after the service said that it was the most impressive
and beautiful service they have ever attended, and they were especially stirred
by the final salute.

A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!
I'm most sure you have been informed of the new schedule
of the Herbert Littleton dedication in Mena, AR.
In the event you haven't been informed, it is to be 9/12/09
at 10 a.m. at the court house lawn. The monument is in place and hopefully we
will have some Marines from Korea to attend.
This is all I have to say at this time. Lou & I will be there at the dedication
and will be staying at the Limetree Inn. The Fourth Marine Division Band is to
assist us and as I understand will put on a concert at the Mena High School
Auditorium after the dedication.
Looking forward to seeing you at Buffallo. I see on the New Orleans Saints
schedule that they will be playing the Bills on Sunday. That is the day we all
will be checking out but we plan to stay an extra day and see the game. Maybe
if Jim Hannan informs the Marines attending some might want to stay an extra day
to see the game & maybe we can get special recognization at the game and maybe
cheaper tickets, worth a try anyway.
Semper Fi,
Buddy Hixon
