Regarding the number of set dancing web sites in Britain,
there are only two that I am aware of, John Earle's for the
Exeter Set Dancers, and Joe O'Hara's site of instructions
for sets. In Ireland few clubs have web sites, but most of
the summer schools have one.
I observe a healthy increase in the number of set dancers'
email addresses. Perhaps over time there's likely to be more
interest in web sites.

I went through the same debate with myself about a couple of years ago
also. I was surprised then at how many people told me that they could
not see the point of a set dancing club having its own domain name.
When I analysed the various attitudes, I found that some did not like
the idea because it had a ring of self-aggrandisement about it, i.e.
they did not like to have others think that we were promoting ourselves
in some way, some simply were not interested in paying extra money for
registering a domain name when an email address and also web space could
be had for free from many ISPs, some simply took the attitude that it
was OK so long as someone else (i.e. me) did all the work.
Although I have registered set-dancing.org as our domain name, I am not
convinced that there is any real willingness on the part of other
non-commercial organisations to pay extra for a domain name, no matter
how relevant. It could also be that most, if not all, set dancing
groups are driven along by the enthusiasm of usually one person who does
most of the work and that the level of interest in registering a domain
name is determined by the interest of that one person. Most dancers
want to turn up and dance and are simply not interested in such things
as domain names. Most organisers are usually busy doing other things
and if they can get away without any extra bother they will.
You will probably say that registering a domain name takes very little
time and costs relatively little. That is indeed so but for most people
it is just one more thing and generally people still do not have the
confidence to undertake the learning required. In addition to teaching
set dancing, I also have a computer consultancy and I am still amazed at
times how long it takes the average person to learn the very basic
skills of emailing.
I think we are operating in a very different environment to a commercial
one where image and ease of contact are vital. So long as organisers
can be contacted somehow most are not bothered as to how that is
achieved. Although I have not checked this out personally, I remember
Bill Lynch telling me a little while ago that there are only three set
dancing organisers in the UK who are on email (or was it three who had
web sites). Many set dancers do communicate with me by email but the
same people still do not see our web site as a prime means of
information seeking. For example, if a dance class had to be cancelled
at short notice, putting that information on my home page would result
in almost everyone turning up as usual.
The idea of having a set dancing network operating though the same
domain is great in theory but I would not like to invest any money in
it. Most of us end up subsidising our set dancing groups out of our own
pocket anyway. So what you have described does not surprise me at all.
Perhaps things will be different in 5 years' time!!

A couple years ago I registered the domain names IrishSetDancing.com,
IrishSetDancing.org, IrishSetDancing.net, IrishSetDance.org, and
setdance.org. I was amazed that these domains were available, and being
new to webmastering I thought I had stumbled across unburied treasure.
My idea was to have a sort of switchboard for every set dancing group to
have a high profile URL and email address, e.g.,
www.IrishSetDancing.org/yourclub and yourclub@....
No one was interested.
I'm keeping setdance.org for myself, but now that the registration
period on the other domains is approaching I'm going to let them expire.
However, I'm struggling to understand why no one wanted what I thought
was an irresistible web and email address. Have I overrated the
importance of promoting ourselves on the web? Is a topical domain name
frivolous, vain, and nothing more?
I'd be grateful if anyone has any thoughts to share.
Kind regards,
Mark
I certainly did not say that I did not approve of
women battering in MODERN set dancing - so long as it
does not drown out the music!!
However I do object to stomping by both male and
female 'dancers'. Unfortunately this is too prevalent
now-a-days by both sexes. So too is good and elegant
dancing again by both sexes but this is becoming rarer
as the fashion for more and more noise spreads.

I agree with you Bud. I'm dancing for a couple of years now
and stiff leather soles is loud enough to hear yourself
battering but not too loud. There is no need of banging.

Is it worth it for noise? Stiff (thick) leather should be suitable.

Hello all,
I like to do some battering while dancing but most of the time cannot hear

Actually I quite agree with you.
This is why, after dancing for many years, I only start studying certain
styles of battering now.
This is also why I want to keep away from fiberglass and carbon soles. I
think they should be used only by SOLO dancers.
The old way with nails allowed a more muffled sound and, according to the
number of nails, a volume that could be heard by the dancer without annoying
other dancers too much.
In fact, I want to be able to hear myself while I am practicing and learning
mostly (in a course context).
Thank you for your answers.

approve of ladies battering!
Vive la change, Chris. Times change, traditions
change. If a lady is good at what she does, why make
an issue of telling her that she isn't supposed to do
it in the name of "tradition?"

Lightweight maybe, but incredibly noisy! Can you not
just wear leather dancing shoes, like character shoes
or summat? It seems to me that a rake of nails or
fiberglass tips would make for quite a
clackity-clackity-clackity sound, no? I find loud
shoes extremely distracting, myself.

In the old days - out of courtesy - it was only the
man of the house (host) who did any battering. Or
perhaps in a cottage only the male partner of the
couple who were currently dancing 'at home' on the
hearth flag (i.e. nearest the open fire).

Dear Mr. Lynch:

Subject: Shindig Weekend
Hi Bill,
I am wondering if you would be able to help two single,
available with a view to marriage girls make their way to
Tralee for our Shindig weekend in January. You see they are
flying in to Shannon on Friday evening 18th January from
Frankfurt, Germany arriving at 8.30p.m. The problem they
have is how to get from Shannon Airport at 8.30 in the
evening to The Earl of Desmond hotel in Tralee. Is it
possible that you could put a notice on the web page as some
lads may be only too willing to escort two German ladies to
our weekend. And who knows, but it may lead to something
special. After all there were three engagement announcements
last year, all of which have tied the knot since and are
still together as I speak. If anybody is willing to help
tell them to send me an email and I will give them a name
and email address for these two ladies.
Regards,
Paddy Hanafin.

Regarding the festival emails I passed on here -
I know nothing about these festivals other that what you can
see in the emails and make no endorsement of them. I leave
it to any interested parties to investigate them before

Subject: unesco listing /irish dance question
Mr. Bill Lynch-
Hi - I'm a research consultant at Arizona State University.
I am working on a project studying the link between dance
and human rights world wide. The research will result in an
anthology of historical and theoretical overviews, regional
studies and testimonials.
I came across your information at the UNESCO international
dance council directory and hope that you can help. We are
looking for an author to write an articulate, anecodotal
account of his or her experiences with dance and human
rights issues in Ireland. Do you know of anyone who could
write a testimonal statement or do you know where I can find
more information? Statements are short - only 300 -900
words - and are reflections on personal experiences. We've
been looking for about three months with no luck - so any
help at all is great.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Many thanks-
Karen Schupp

I've added new material to the web site this week, all from
the October-November issue of Set Dancing News. See the News
page for most articles, the Ceili Bands page for the ceili
band report and the Photos page for more photos.
In addition there are extra photos at this address:
www.setdancingnews.net/gallery
There are 47 photographs from last weekend in Blankenheim,
Germany, and 59 from the Milwaukee Irish Fest. They take a
long time to load, there are no captions and they're not a
permanent part of the site, but they're available for
viewing now.

Below is an email about a festival in Holland in 2003 which
is seeking Irish participants. I believe participants only
have to pay their way to Holland, other costs are covered by
the festival. (I've cleaned up Trudy's email a bit.)

Subject: Festival in holland (Schagen)
Hello,
I would like to ask you somthing.
We have in 2003 in Schagen, Holland, a festival with many
folk dance groups from many countries of Europe and this
year we had two groups from South Africa.
Now my question. We're looking now for a long time for a
group from Ireland. A group that is dancing for fun, dancing
as a amateur. I hope that you can help me. In July of 2003
we have a new festival and we are now looking for new
dancing groups. When the people come to Schagen that is the
price to come to Schagen for the dancers, we pay everything
in Schagen. The dancers sleep at a family home. I hope
really that you can help me.
Greetings from me and the people of the dancing group of
Schagen.
Trudy
Will you mail me when you have something for me? My address
is truud22@....
Sorry but my English is not so good, there are maybe
mistakes.
Thanks for being the first, Manny. I'm going to send a few
useful emails to the list today.
best wishes, Bill
