It was founded in 1949 by Bob Luitweiler as a peace movement.
Servas International is a non-profit making organisation working to build understanding, tolerance and world peace. It operates through a network of Servas hosts around the world who are prepared to open their doors to travellers.
SERVAS INTERNATIONAL has consultative status as non-governmental organisation with the U.N. Economic and Social Council.
At the moment SERVAS has two representatives at the U.N. one in New York and one in Geneva.
There are over 13,000 "open doors" scattered in almost all countries.
