When I worked at the Los Angeles Times, there had always been an extremely strict policy regarding access to any Times properties.  Perhaps not quite as strict as I saw at the Toyota development facilities where cars were designed, but they were intended to protect the reporters from subpoenas.  In my opinion, if you expect the press to act as a quasi watchdog, then you need to protect them. Responsible journalism requires them to confirm and fact check their stories from different sources and at the end of the day, isn't worrying about the source/leak of information far less important than the issue itself?

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration, leading Senate Democrats and a coalition of news organizations have reached tentative agreement on legislation providing greater protections against the fining or imprisonment of reporters who refuse to identify confidential sources.

Under the deal, made public Friday, federal judges could quash subpoenas demanding testimony or information from reporters if the judges determined that the public interest in news gathering outweighed the need to uncover the source of a leak, including, in some circumstances, unauthorized disclosure of classified government information.

"Lawyers in California asked a judge on Thursday to bar the American International Group from transferring money out of the state for 90 days, out of concern that the company may not have enough readily available assets to back its policies, as required by law."

"In the past, the regulator of A.I.G., the holding company, was the Office of Thrift Supervision — a situation that has been widely recognized as inadequate since the company nearly toppled last year. After the Federal Reserve rescued A.I.G. in September 2008, the thrift office withdrew as the holding company’s regulator. But the Fed did not replace it. The Fed describes itself as a creditor, not a regulator. "

"Mr. Gober also pointed out that A.I.G.’s longtime head of reinsurance was convicted of several business felonies in 2008, and that a vice chancellor of the Delaware chancery court had described the company’s “inner circle” of executives as a “criminal organization” in an opinion last February."

Watch what happens when Japan starts to sell treasury notes, as they will have to do, in order to fund their pension system.  They have an aging population, and current workers cannot support the retirees....

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/28/AR2009102802347.html

Excerpts:

LONDON -- The dramatic decline of the U.S. dollar is aiding the American economic recovery but setting off alarm bells overseas, with corporate executives, politicians and pundits calling it among the biggest threats to the rebounds underway in Europe and Japan.

Mounting concern abroad over the shrinking dollar underscores how exchange rates have emerged as a growing source of friction, with many countries jockeying for the weakest currency to boost exports and protect their markets from foreign competition.

The U.S. dollar has taken a steep tumble -- down 18 percent against the euro in the past 12 months, and more than 40 percent against the South African rand and Australian dollar -- as U.S. officials have effectively diluted its value, printing money and adopting near-zero interest rates, to jump-start the economy.

The moves have sharply improved the U.S. trade deficit, as everything from American-made cellular phones to furniture suddenly become more competitive both at home and overseas while giving foreign manufacturers more incentives to create jobs in the United States. Analysts say the severity of the downturn in the United States as well as the unemployment rate would be markedly worse without the weak dollar.

Yet it has had just the opposite effect on German washing machines and Japanese cars, making them less price competitive in the world's largest market -- the United States. Moreover, those same Japanese cars and German washing machines are also less competitive in the world's fastest growing market -- China.

That's because the Chinese yuan, still closely pegged to the value of the U.S. currency, has fallen just as much as the dollar on world markets, serving up a double whammy to countries with fast-appreciating currencies like the euro. It also means that China, the country that enjoys the single biggest trade surplus with the United States, has actually seen that surplus grow during the recession.

Developing countries

Other developing countries whose currencies are not pegged to the dollar, such as Brazil, have grown so concerned about the soaring values that they have recently enacted new investment controls to stem the U.S. dollar's fall. European companies including Nestle, based in Switzerland where the franc has appreciated 13 percent against the dollar in the past 12 months, cite exchange rates as a bigger factor in recent revenue declines than weak global demand.

"If the dollar is going down this way, it is because that is what the Americans want," economic commentator Yves de Kerdrel wrote in the French newspaper Le Figaro this week. "In a globalized economy where national egoisms persist but where customs barriers have almost disappeared, the best protection consists in playing on exchange rates."

Yet analysts say the fall of the dollar reflects a basic economic truth: the U.S. financial situation is no longer as solid as it once was. Rather than being undervalued, many argue that the dollar has room to fall further.

"The dollar is weaker not so much because people are buying yen because they think Japan is suddenly going to be the next hot thing again," said Stephen King, chief economist at HSBC in London. "Instead, there is a sense that in some very defined and critical way, the dollar and the U.S. have lost their way. The U.S. has borrowed so much from foreigners. They've got a rising budget deficit and few ways to bring it under control that investors see as viable. Those are things that affect the value of a currency."

The dollar has also fallen because investors are feeling more confident about the global economy. During the height of the crisis, the greenback was viewed as the safest port in the storm. As the storm subsides, investors are charting a course again for emerging markets which, given the poor fiscal position and fragile recovery in the United States, no longer seem quite as risky as they once did.

It has generated a mild snowball effect. As the dollar weakens, it becomes less attractive to hold, so investors increasingly are dumping the currency and moving into oil, gold and stocks. That, in turn, has helped fuel a strong recovery in commodity prices and recent stock market surges.

The risk remains of a full-blown run on the dollar that could force the Federal Reserve to suddenly raise interest rates, dealing a potentially severe blow to the U.S. recovery. That could happen if major holders of dollars, such as China and Japan, begin to sell off their holdings. China in particular has made statements on the need to move away from the dollar as a reserve currency, though analysts say they have so far backed up those calls with only minor moves to divest their holdings. There are also rising concerns that the U.S. policy of flooding the economy with cheap money could drive up inflation, as it has already begun to do in Britain, a country where the once-mighty pound has been humbled, tumbling against the euro as well as the dollar.

From her blog (but not originally - it has been a meme since at least 2005.  Ever hear of attribution Brittney?):
How to Prevent Rape

If a woman is drunk, don’t rape her.
If a woman is walking alone at night, don’t rape her.
If a women is drugged and unconscious, don’t rape her.
If a woman is wearing a short skirt, don’t rape her.
If a woman is jogging in a park at 5 am, don’t rape her.
If a woman looks like your ex-girlfriend you’re still hung up on, don’t rape her.
If a woman is asleep in her bed, don’t rape her.
If a woman is asleep in your bed, don’t rape her.
If a woman is doing her laundry, don’t rape her.
If a woman is in a coma, don’t rape her.

It goes on from there, but you get the idea.

Also (not originally) from her blog:
How to Prevent Sexual Assault

1. Don’t put drugs in people’s drinks in order to control their behavior.

2. When you see someone walking by themselves, leave them alone!

3. If you pull over to help someone with car problems, remember not to assault them!

4. NEVER open an unlocked door or window uninvited.

5. If you are in an elevator and someone else gets in, DON’T ASSAULT THEM!

Now, as well intentioned as this advice is, there are a few problems associated with it.  The most obvious is, if you ARE a rapist, you most likely already know that rape is wrong and will disregard this advice (I know, it's shocking, but telling criminals not to commit crimes on a blog hasn't been shown to reduce crime).  But the more basic problem is that, odds are, you, the dear reader, her readers, the CBS News viewers and anyone else who happens to read this advice are, for the most part, NOT RAPISTS!  Yet here she is, assuming you are.  Some people just might (and, in my personal opinion, should) be offended.

Even the military has caught on to this distinction (hear that Brittney? You are more ignorant than the people who dropped condoms on Asian countries to give the opposing side an inferiority complex and who conceived the idea of training their members with comic books)!  Admittedly, they tried it your way, but eventually someone caught on that sexual assault training that assumed you were a rapist wasn't working and that you could conduct more effective training without insulting the people you were trying to reach.

You see, in most cases, sexual assaults actually involve MORE than two people.  There are, of course, the assaulter and the victim, but there are all sorts of people who are there in the preliminaries that have the power to affect the direction of the encounter.  The bystanders are sometimes enablers (e.g. the ones who vouch for a guy, or who provides extra drinks), sometimes inhibitors (e.g. the ones who call a cab for someone who is intoxicated, steps in to say you've been drinking too much, or who simply make sure you get home safely), but most often are simply passive witnesses to the preceding events.  Teaching these people that they have the power to help, showing them the signs of danger to be aware of and suggesting that they can act as heroes instead of accusing them of being potential villians has proven to be a plan of action that actually works to reduce sexual assault - in fact, it has proven to be HIGHLY effective, even with extremely aggressive young adults trained in multiple forms of extreme violence!

Of course, if your intention is merely to insult and offend MALES (presumably, the females know these lists are not aimed at them) while ignoring assaults by females and not worrying about assaults on men and boys (I guess no one thought of that for Brittney, so she has no one to steal quotes about that from) then by all means, follow Brittney's lead!

Yeah, Scientology is a bunch of crap. 30 years ago I pretended to be
"interested" and went to meetings in their central headquarters in Los Angeles.
I did it because my girlfriend got roped in and I had a vendetta against those
people.

They had some mechanical device called an "auditor" which was supposed to tell
them something about your personality, which they would then relay to the
applicant, and of course the analysis would show you need their help.

They quickly discovered what I was up to, and that I thought they were full of
shit.

I was asked to leave.

I am not sure what their first clue was about my dubiant position towards
Scientology.

Maybe it was when I told a senior official "you are full of shit".

P.S.: the story has a very sad ending. Suzanne Young from Los Angeles
disappeared into Scientology. In recent years I have since spoken to her mom
and she has had no contact with her daughter for years.

Yeah, I agree with Mike about the influence of the pharma companies. They
should be banned from taking doctors on boondoggles to Hawaii etc. and from
giving out other sorts of gifts as part of their marketing campaigns.

Oh, and don't forget that she's a woman.  If the genders were reversed - and especially if the person in the house were the wife of a cop, your version would have been exactly what had happened - assuming the tresspassing peeping Tom hadn't been shot first.

If I HAVE to choose, give me the Freaks.

I am NOT a fan of Scientology.  They are a joke and a cult and take HUGE  advantage of their members.  I recommend everyone avoid them like the plague and will say so publicly.

However, I'll support them against France any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

From the Times Online:
The Church of Scientology was convicted of organised fraud in France today in a ground-breaking judgment which denounced the cult for swindling vulnerable members out of thousands of euros.

...

[Aude-Claire] Malton, 43, for instance, said she was persuaded to spend the money on drugs, vitamins, counselling, saunas and equipment which she was told she would improve her mental and physical health. This included an electrometer to measure her mental energy.

...

In her ruling, Judge Sophie-Hélène Château said the Church of Scientology had used fallacious arguments ''of no scientific value'' to ''catch'' members.
Yes, Scientology's relationship to Science is equivalent to the Moonies' relationship to Lunar Studies and there is no question in my mind that anyone dealing with them will lose their money and have nothing to show for it but a reputation for gullibility.  However, I don't accept the argument that people have to be financially "protected" from them any more than I accept that they have to be protected from being heartbreak as teenagers.

More than admittedly questionable medical equipment, services and supplements, Mrs Malton was sold a belief system.  And while I, and many others, consider it a blatantly ridiculous one, it was a belief system that fulfilled a need - much like psychotherapy and chiropractic and homeopathic medicines do around the world. As long as they were implementing that belief system for a willing participant, France, and any other government agency, should keep their judgements to themselves.

Of course, there are plenty of other actions Scientologists do that SHOULD be prosecuted - attempting to coerce or intimidate members to keep them from leaving the church, for instance, should be met with public floggings, tar and feathers and a long ride on a wooden rail to the border of the Country, but that's an entirely different issue.

Agreed. Because of the way they're paid, most doctors work for the insurance companies or the government, not the patient. In terms of satisfying. Many are also heavily involved with the pharmaceutical companies, pimping their drugs in any case imaginable and sometimes lobbying for forced administration (ritalin, flu shots, gardasil, statins for teenagers, the list is long).

Is anyone else amazed that virtually all of the prescription drugs for depression have the potential side-effect of increasing suicidal thoughts and behavior? Did they forget what they were trying to do, or what?

The doctor is the gatekeeper between you and what you need medically, and you have to play the game to get what you need.  Refusing to take medication or telling the doctor that you take alternative supplements can lead to problems.  The doctor may write in his reports that you are a noncompliant patient and that can follow you around to other doctors or to agencies.  Do not be HONEST with your doctor unless you first know fully that he/she can be trusted to respect you.  Do not assume.

If, for example, the doctor prescribes a new medicine with risky side effects and you prefer an older safer medicine, you can lie about the medicine prescribed by not taking it and saying you are but are experiencing the kinds of side effects that are considered negative, so that you can obtain the older medicine instead.  Do not be afraid to doctor shop.  It is better to move on quickly from a doctor that is a problem to find a more compatible one.

There are three medicines I did not take after reading the inserts that have since been taken off the market.  There are two others that I did take, had bad reactions and stopped taking that later were removed from the market.

Few doctors care to give the kind of precision to their work that would uncover your true medical situation.  Mostly you get immediately lumped into one of several large, common categories.  For example, I have mentioned symptoms that doctors have dismissed as possibly related to my arthritis or my diabetes, that I do not think are related to those conditions.  Some have since been recognized as part of a different chronic condition.

I had back pain since childhood and I spent years being treated for muscle spasms I did not have.  I diagnosed myself with spinal stenosis and went to three pain specialists before I could get a prescription for an MRI to confirm it.  All the treatment for muscle spasms were a waste of time and money and since I generally was recognized to have very relaxed muscles in general, the diagnosis never made sense to me.  Having to doctor shop to get the prescription was another waste of money.  In all the descriptions of health care costs, no one ever recognizes the waste from not listening to the patient.

From personal experience, I can say that unless you have some sort of personal relationship with your doctor, if you're seeking medical care in the U.S. it's imperative that you take an extremely proactive approach. Extremely. I've found that to be true regardless of what insurance or service you subscribe to.

Thanks for explaining exactly why more and more doctors are refusing to accept medicare patients - and why medicare patients get poorer service than people with private insurance in general.

Ever talk to a financial planner in the United States?  I know a few.  They all recommend HSAs for providing for medical needs.  Strangely, none of them recommend trying to get onto Medicare...

Point number 1.  Medicare has a fee schedule, doctors cannot bill for services not approved by Medicare.   Commercial insurance plans pay 130% (on average) of Medicare fee schedule, and yet the commercially insured are workers and generally healthier than those over 65 who require more care.  Also, doctors can bill commercial insureds for anything denied by their health plan.

So if Libertarians favor ending Medicare, they are the idiots I always suspected they were, but I appreciate you bringing me the proof.

I agree.  As a matter of fact, I have found it necessary to diagnose myself first and learn what tests are necessary to confirm my diagnosis and make sure that I emphasize the symptoms that will motivate the doctor to choose the right test.  You have to select the symptoms that fit the diagnosis and leave off other symptoms that do not easily fit, so the poor doctor doesn't become confused with too much information.  Then you have to research for yourself the different treatment approaches to minimize risks to yourself from dangerous drugs or other treatments.  You also have to act fairly cheerful about the whole thing, because doctors will take any excuse to diagnose you as depressed as a way to avoid really dealing with pain, fatigue, weakness.

ALL IDEAS: A RIGHT TO BE EXPRESSED;
DOUBLE DEFENDERS: THEIR RIGHTS AT RISK.

Christian

I agree, none of that was a factor in the Nobel Committee decision - if it were, he wouldn't have gotten the prize.

I think the best reason I have heard for them giving him the prize is because the committee wanted to give him legitimacy he wouldn't otherwise have.  I think that backfired though.  Instead of giving him legitimacy, it detracted from what was left of the legitimacy of the prize.

Dumb and dumber. Daniel, I thank you for convincing me to never vote
Libertarian.... EVER.....

Point number 1. Medicare has a fee schedule, doctors cannot bill for services
not approved by Medicare. Commercial insurance plans pay 130% (on average) of
Medicare fee schedule, and yet the commercially insured are workers and
generally healthier than those over 65 who require more care. Also, doctors can
bill commercial insureds for anything denied by their health plan.

So if Libertarians favor ending Medicare, they are the idiots I always suspected
they were, but I appreciate you bringing me the proof.

Cheers,
Christian

been enthusiastic about adopting another dog for a while now and
decided this would be a good time to do it. I did, however, have a few
questions about if I could bring my dog over, or bring one of theirs
over here, to see how well they get along with my dog. This is when
the worker on the phone told me that before I could pay $100 to adopt
one of the dogs they're drowning in and can't afford to take care of,
I would have to have my dog neutered, even though all of their dogs
are neutered, and even if I adopted a male. I told them I was not
going to do this and didn't understand what their objection could
possibly be. She gave me the standard routine about them being more
likely to get cancer and so forth, but couldn't provide a reason why
this was any concern of theirs and how it could possibly outweigh the
benefits from rescuing a dog. I was told that there could be no
exceptions to this rule.

So at this point, I'd like to wish the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville,
Pennsylvania congratulations for preventing at least one of their dogs
from being adopted by a loving owner into a safe and nurturing
environment.

Snopes has an article about license plates and how a little bureaucracy and a computer or two can REALLY screw things up:
The DMV form asked applicants to list three choices in case one or two of their desired selections had already been assigned. Barbour, a sailing enthusiast, wrote down "SAILING" and "BOATING" as his first two choices; when he couldn't think of a third option, he wrote "NO PLATE," meaning that if neither of his two choices was available, he did not want personalized plates. Plates reading "BOATING" and "SAILING" had indeed already been assigned, so the DMV, following Barbour's instructions literally, sent him license plates reading "NO PLATE." Barbour was not thrilled that the DMV had misunderstood his intent, but he opted to keep the plates because of their uniqueness.

Four weeks later he received his first notice for an overdue parking fine, from faraway San Francisco, and within days he began receiving dozens of overdue notices from all over the state on a daily basis. Why? Because when law enforcement officers ticketed illegally parked cars that bore no license plates, they had been writing "NO PLATE" in the license plate field. Now that Barbour had plates bearing that phrase, the DMV computers were matching every unpaid citation issued to a car with missing plates to him.

...

A couple of years later, the DMV finally caught on and sent a notice to law enforcement agencies requesting that they use the word NONE rather than NO PLATE to indicate a cited vehicle was missing its plates. This change slowed the flow of overdue notices Barbour received to a trickle, about five or six a month, but it also had an unintended side effect: Officers sometimes wrote MISSING instead of NONE to indicate cars with missing license plates, and suddenly a man named Andrew Burg in Marina del Rey started receiving parking tickets from places he hadn't visited either. Burg, of course, was the owner of a car with personalized plates reading "MISSING."
Now I'm sure there are other words that could generate a similar computer glitch, but I started wondering if there was something a person could put on a license plate (i.e. 7 characters, no special symbols) that would PREVENT the vehicle owner from getting a ticket sent to him or stop any follow up actions.

I came up with "EXEMPT" as a possibility. Any other ideas?

Subject: How to Repair a CD with a Banana

There are plenty of products on the market that repair CD's.  There are also a decent number of ways to repair one yourself with just a little preparation, but what do you do if you are caught flat footed and have to spot repair a CD NOW with no preparation?

If you pack your own lunch and eat healthy, you *may* just catch a lucky break!

PRELIMINARIES

Before getting into the details, there are a few principles to cover about CD repair.  First off, a repairable cd is one that is scratched, but not too deeply and not on the foil where the data is actually stored.  If it has light scratches on the shiny rainbow filled pretty side, you are in business, but if the scratches are really deep or they are on the side the printed label is on and you can see light through them, you are now the proud owner of a coaster suitable for your kid's next art project.  For this article, we are assuming you have a repairable CD.

In general, CD's are repaired by using one or a combination of two techniques.  The first one is buffing - i.e. scraping off the bottom layer of the CD and - hopefully - removing the scratch in the process.  Digital Innovations has been using this process with its Skip Doctor line of tools for years, but I've been told that Brasso is just as effective.

The second technique is filling in the scratch with something tansparent.  Suitable filler includes anything from professional grade high tech polymers that permanently repair the scratch to quick temporary fillers like furniture polish, vasoline or shoe polish.

And here we get to the good part!

This knowledge and one more tidbit, brings us to an expedient - albeit slightly unusual - fix for a damaged CD.  The tidbit?  Bananas can be used as shoe polish.

Forearmed with this knowledge, the following steps are completely logical (you might want to explain this ahead of time if you are repairing a CD at work.  Just a suggestion...):

THE STEPS

Step 1:  Clean the CD - use a little water or glass cleaner and a lint free soft cloth to remove any dirt or smudges that may be interfering with your player's ability to read your CD.  This alone may "fix" some CDs, so you can try to play it again here.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Do NOT spit on, or lick, CD's at work no matter how inconveniently located the glass cleaner and water fountain may be!  You do not know who repaired the CD the last time, your co-workers will be grossed out and you will thereafter be known as "that spitting computer guy" in your office!  Save this technique for HOME CD repair.

Step 2:  Eat a banana.  If you read the ehow link above, you know it is best to use a slightly green banana to avoid unnecessary shedding.

Step 3: Cut off both ends of the peel and cut the skin into small convenient pieces.  Ehow recommends scissors.

Step 4:  Rub the slippery side of the peel on your cd using light circular motions.  Pay particular attention to any visible scratches.

Step 5: Using a clean, dry, lint free cloth, buff the cd shiny.  Here it is important to go up and down from the little hole on the CD to the edge - essentially against the "grain" of the CD.  This is because if you go with the grain and you leave a scratch or smudge, you will cover a great big swathe of data and the CD won't be able to recover it.  However if you do the same across the tracks, you have a lot more leeway.

Step 6: Start up your CD, copy the information (because this is only a temporary fix) and graciously receive your accolades.

Step 7: Realize that, in the REAL world, unique solutions are rarely rewarded, you are now known as "that spitting monkey tech" (I warned you about spitting in step one) and will thereafter be paid for individual services in bananas.  This is, of course, assuming your fix actually WORKED - if it didn't, you are now, and forever more, simply known as "Monkey boy" - a fate which will be reflected in your subsequent performance appraisals (If you can talk your boss into giving you a raise as "Monkey boy", you are wasted as a tech.  Quit your job and go negotiate world peace.  This is especially apropos because, since you can't even repair a CD with a banana, you are likely not a very good tech to begin with).

CONCLUSION

Hey! I never said this was a foolproof solution or even that it was a net benefit for you. I DO, however, believe it is a net benefit in general. After all, if you succeeded, the world has a bit more coherent data and, if you failed, the office got a nice laugh at work. And of course, there is always the possibility that this little DIY project indirectly led to world peace!

For our next expedient fix, we will discuss cleaning the bathtub with the toilet brush...

And, perhaps-- only perhaps-- Dan was being facetious?

By the way, there was a good article on mises.org about Williamson. I am sure
you guys need me to tell you that.

I guess it's possible.

Heck, the whole thing could just be a practical joke Europe is playing on Obama - Maybe they actually gave it to Tsvangirai and just haven't told anybody yet.

Imagine, Obama walks up the stage, shaking hands and reaching out to receive the award right when the presenter pulls it away and everyone on the committee yells "Psyche!!"

THAT would be something to see!

Here's my chuckle for the day...

From the Associated Press:

"Alfred Nobel wrote that the prize should go to the person who has contributed most to the development of peace in the previous year," Jagland said. "Who has done more for that than Barack Obama?"

Remember now, they are talking about the year 2008 - which Obama spent campaigning.

And I do have an answer for Jagland's "who has done more [for the development of peace in 2008] than Barack Obama" - Khaled Shiekh Mohammed.  After all, his confessions DID stop several terrorist attacks.

Good point, though I was thinking something along the lines of this:  we knew it always was a joke of a prize, awarded now to someone we knew would be a joke of a president.
