(Preliminary) Call for Paper
EC-TEL 2010
Fifth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Sustaining TEL: From Innovation to Learning and Practice
[http://www.ectel2010.org]

28 September  - 1 October 2010 in Barcelona, Spain

The last decade has seen significant investment in terms of effort and resources
(time, people, money) in innovating education and training. The time has come to
make the bold step from small scale innovation research and -development to
larger scale implementation and evaluation. The time has come to show the world
(government, industry, general population) that we have matured to the stage
that sustainable
learning and learning practices – both in schools and in industry – can be
achieved based upon our work.

What not long ago was seen and experienced as a novel technology (Internet and
WWW) has become for much of the populace mundane and commonplace (Web 2.0 and
social software). What not long ago was expensive and exotic (computers and
broadband computer networks) is now inexpensive and ordinary (netbooks and
omnipresent wireless). And what in the past was proprietary and inaccessible
(information and learning materials) is now generic and open (open educational
resources).

The TEL community is faced by new research questions related to large scale
deployment of technology enhanced learning, support of individual learning
environments through mashup and social software, new approaches in TEL
certification, etc.. Furthermore, for new approaches are required for TEL
design, implementation, and use to improve the understanding and communication
of educational needs among all stakeholders, ranging from researchers, learners,
tutors, educational organizations, companies, TEL industry, and policy makers.

ECTEL 2010 will bring together technological developments, learning models, and
implementations of new and innovative approaches to training and education. The
conference will explore how the synergy of multiple disciplines, ranging from
Computer Science, Education, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Social Science,
can provide new, more effective and more especially more sustainable,
technology-enhanced learning solutions to learning problems. The conference
welcomes researchers and developers from European and Non-European countries and
industries to present recent advancements from technologies, applications, and
learning models in all areas of technology enhanced learning.

Subject: ANN: New GoodRelations and Generic RDF/RDFa Tools
hepp_m
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

(Apologies for cross-posting)

Dear all:

In the past year, we released a lot of tools in the context of the
GoodRelations vocabulary (http://purl.org/goodrelations/) that may be of
wider interest. All tools are available on-line and most are also
released as sourcecode under LPGL.

1. Generic Tools

a) RDF2DataRSS:
===============
Yahoo accepts RDF only as either RDFa embedded into existing Web pages
or via their proprietary DataRSS feed format. The RDF2DataRSS tool turns
any RDF data submitted as RDF/XML or Turtle/N3 into such Yahoo feeds and
can be used to submit RDF/XML into Yahoo's SearchMonkey index.

http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/rdf2datarss/

b) RDF2RDFa converter:
======================
This tool creates handy snippets of invisible RDFa from RDF/XML content
such that the RDF can be pasted easily into any existing page without
hard-wiring it with the HTML page mark-up.

http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/rdf2rdfa/

2. Tools for Creating GoodRelations Data

a) Google Product Feed Converter:
=================================
Many shops are already exposing their product and price information in
one of the proprietary Google feed formats (RSS 1.0, 2.0 / CSV-based).
With our tool, you can generate GoodRelations RDF/XML data from that
data. That can be particularly interesting for adding RDF export to
existing shops easily.

http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/google-product-feed-converter/

b) BMEcat2GoodRelations converter:
==================================
BMEcat is a popular XML Schema Definition (and DTD) for exchanging
catalog data between enterprises in B2B settings. Many PIM, shop, and
ERP software packages can create BMEcat XML documents. This tool
transforms a BMEcat catalog into a GoodRelations-variant in RDF/XML.
It can reuse / preserve more features than any other tool.

http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/bmecat2goodrelations/

By the way, a free tool for creating BMEcat catalogs is at
http://www.eclass.de/user/software/democat_2_0.zip (in German only,
unfortunately).

c) GoodRelations Annotator:
===========================
A straightforward form-based Web application that creates a detailed
company / business profile in RDFa and RDF/XML.

http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/goodrelations-annotator/

d) Plug-ins / Extensions for Shop Software:
===========================================
     * osCommerce Shop Software:
       http://code.google.com/p/goodrelations-for-oscommerce/

     * Joomla/Virtuemart CMS/Shop combo:
       http://code.google.com/p/goodrelations-for-joomla/

     * Magento shop software:
       Contact Uwe Stoll, http://www.semantium.de/ (demo shop at
http://www.la-mousson.de/)

3. GoodRelations-compliant Domain Ontologies for Vertical Industries

a) ClassOWL 5.1.4 Products and Services Ontology
================================================
     * OWL or HTML: http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/ontologies/eclass/5.1.4/
       (Warning: The file is very large - 38.3 MB for RDF/XML and 71.8 MB
for HTML):

     * ZIP: OWL+HTML:
http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/ontologies/eclass/5.1.4/eclass_514en.zip
       (eClassOWL 5.1.4 ontology and documentation, compressed - OWL +
HTML, zip, 4.7 MB):

b) freeClassOWL - Ontology of Construction and Building Materials
=================================================================
     * http://www.freeclass.eu/freeclass_v1
       (add .html / .owl if content negotiation should fail)

c) Consumer Electronics Ontology (CEO)
======================================
     * http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/ontologies/consumerelectronics/v1
       (add .html / .owl if content negotiation should fail)

3. Applications for Inspecting and Consuming GoodRelations Data

a) iGoogr: "Imagine Google was using the GoodRelations vocabulary for
e-commerce"
================================================================================\
=
A quick demo of how Google search results could be improved by
GoodRelations meta-data; also useful for inspecting your own page,
because it fetches and parses RDFa in real-time.

http://igoogr.appspot.com/

b) GoodRelations Statistics
===========================
A tool that collects and exposes detailed data on the popularity of
GoodRelations elements in the wild (with RDFa export of the stats!).

http://goodrelations-stats.appspot.com/

c) GoodRelations Validator (alpha)
==================================
A tool that spots semantic inconsistencies in GoodRelations data beyond
the axioms of the ontology.

http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/goodrelations-validator/

Much more is on our agenda for 2010, so please stay tuned by
     * bookmarking http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/wiki/GoodRelations and
     * subscribing to
http://ebusiness-unibw.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/goodrelations .

Best wishes

I would like to thank all those answered the survey. I decided to resend this mail as there have been concerns raised due to the fact that I sent the initial survey through my personal e-mail. The survey will be open for a few more days, and I hope more people will be able to give feedback, specially on the motivation factor of collaborative ontology alignment for the public.

Hello All,

(Apologies for cross posting)

I am currently researching on building a scalable approach to collaborative ontology alignment. The aim of this project is to use a crowd sourcing approach to ontology alignment. Considerations will also be made as to how to motivate the public to take part in ontology alignment. Furthermore the scalability(number of people, number of concepts) of the solution to the internet as a whole rather than a specific expert group of knowledge engineers is also investigated.

The questionnaire contained in the link below is a short survey to gather the requirements for this approach.

http://ecustomersurvey.com/dsm/ViewSurvey.do?id=d23138e6-ac89-4e6c-9f43-bc91c11ab433

Please complete the survey as your feedback will be invaluable to the construction of this approach. Any other comments are also welcome regarding the aim outlined above. (Please mail comments to s.dewaraja@....)

Thanks and Regards,

Supun Dewaraja.

At the address http://www.instancematching.org a new web site about instance
matching is available for discussing and notifying problems and initiatives
about instance matching.

Instance matching is seen as a specific subtask of the more general problem of
ontology matching and, for this reason, IM.org has been created in collaboration
with http://www.ontologymatching.org starting from the experience of the
instance matching evaluation track of OAEI 2009 (
http://oaei.ontologymatching.org/2009/ ).

If OM.org is the main reference resource about matching in general, IM.org
should be seen more as a focused group on the specific field of instance
matching.

Every user interested in instance matching is invited to subscribe the web site
and submit articles, short comments, news or links about:
- Theoretical discussions and problems
- Methods and techniques for IM
- Experiences and empirical work
- Instance Matching evaluation
- Links to tools, datasets, initiatives

Semantic Agent Systems: Foundations and Applications (Edited Book by
Springer-Verlag)
http://tinyurl.com/CFP-ESAS-BySpringer

Integrating agent and semantic Web technologies in order to extend the
ability of programs have long been hailed as the most efficient way to serve
users. The idea is to significantly affect performance of application
software employing cooperating multi-agent systems through the use of
semantic Web services and domain ontologies. The Semantic Web has matured to
a great extent with ontology-based applications being built by several major
enterprises. However, research and development concerned with the
integration of the semantic Web and software agent technologies are moving
at snailÂ’s pace. To bring our contribution, we initiated around November
2005, the series of IEEE International Workshop on Engineering Semantic
Agent Systems in conjunction with the 30th International Computer Software
and Applications Conference (COMPSAC 2006) in Chicago, Illinois, USA. After
four annual workshops, preparing to announce the fifth, and two journal
special issues on this theme, we are soliciting contributions from research
experts and practitioners for an edited volume in the series “Studies in
Computational Intelligence” (http://www.springer.com/series/7092) by
Springer-Verlag.

Topics of Interest:
-----------------
Possible topics for the special issue include:
• Principles and methodologies for semantic agent systems;
• Foundations, theories and models of semantic agent systems;
• Semantic-based autonomous and multi-agent architectures;
• Agent communication languages and protocols with semantics;
• Frameworks and environments for semantic agents systems;
• Ontology development (modeling, versioning, repository) for agent systems
• Ontology management (mapping, merging, alignment) for agents systems;
• Semantic technologies, decision making, communications for agent systems
• Languages, logics, tools and methodologies for semantic agent systems;
• Semantics related agent-oriented software engineering;
• Semantic agents systems for collaboration and cooperation;
• Semantic agent systems for (including but not limited to):
• - Mission-critical systems, enterprise information systems, social
networks,
•   - E-government, e-commerce, e-business, e-health, life sciences,
•   - Multimedia, man-machine interfaces of software application systems;
• Information visualization for agent systems with semantic Web techniques;
• Applications of semantic agents systems with pertinent lessons learned.

Proposal submission:
-------------------
We welcome original high quality contributions on the theme of Semantic
Agent Systems along the aspects of foundation, theory, models, engineering,
and applications. Substantially revised and extended versions of papers
presented at conferences and workshops are also encouraged provided that the
new content exceeds 50% of the paper. A 2-page chapter proposal may be
uploaded to the submission site
(https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/SASFA2010/) as soon as possible. Authors
will be notified of the outcome within two weeks. Draft and final chapter
proposals of about twenty pages must conform to Springer's Instructions for
Authors

7th Extended Semantic Web Conference | ESWC 2010 30 May - 3 June

ABOUT THE ESWC2010

The mission of the Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2010) is to bring
together researchers and practitioners dealing with
different aspects of semantics on the Web. ESWC2010 builds on the success of the
former European Semantic Web Conference series, but
seeks to extend its focus by collaborating with other communities and research
areas, in which web semantics play an important role
-- within and outside ICT. At the same time, ESWC2010 is a truly international
conference, not only "European".

Semantics of web content, enriched with domain theories (ontologies), data about
web usage, natural language processing,
etc. will enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of functionality.
It will weave together a large network of human
knowledge and make this knowledge machine-processable. Various automated
services, based on reasoning with metadata and
ontologies, will help the users to achieve their goals by accessing and
processing information in machine-understandable
form. This network of knowledge systems will ultimately lead to truly
intelligent systems, which will be employed for various
complex decision-making tasks. Research about web semantics can benefit from
ideas and cross-fertilization with many other areas:
Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Database and Information
Systems, Information Retrieval, Multimedia,
Distributed Systems, Social Networks, Web Engineering, and Web Science.

ESWC2010 will present the latest results in research and applications in its
field. The research program will be organised
in targeted research tracks. In addition, the conference will feature a tutorial
program, system descriptions and demos, a
posters track, a Ph.D. symposium, and a number of collocated workshops. The
individual calls for these events can be found on
the conference Web site (http://www.eswc2010.org/).

ONTOLOGIES AND REASONING TRACK

The Ontologies and Reasoning programme involves the management of and reasoning
with ontologies and rules, so as to support their
applications. The central idea of this vision is to use (1) ontologies to encode
application data in a machine understandable
form, in order to be able to automatically integrate data from different sources
and to be able to support semantic search for
information based on its meaning rather than its syntactic form, and (2) rules
to perform conditional decision, event processing
and actions on behalf of the user.

In this track we invite high-quality submissions related (but not limited) to
the following topics:

- Rules and ontology management (creation, evolution, reuse, evaluation, etc.)

- Searching, visualizing, navigating and browsing ontologies

- Ontology reasoning and query answering

- Approximate reasoning techniques for the Web

- Ontology usability

- Query languages and optimization for ontologies

- Combining rules and ontologies

- Declarative rule-based reasoning techniques

- Rule languages, standards, and rule systems

- Ontology-based search

- Ontology alignment (mapping, matching, merging, mediation and reconciliation)

- Ontology learning and metadata generation (e.g., HLT and ML approaches)

- Acquisition of rules and ontologies by knowledge extraction

- Corporate Semantic Web

- applications in enterprises and economic valuation

- Language extensions of OWL, ODM, RIF, RuleML, ...

Papers should be submitted through the Easychair system:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=eswc2010ontologiesandreasoning

SUBMISSIONS

ESWC2010 welcomes the submission of original research and application papers
dealing with all aspects of representing and
using semantics on the web. We encourage theoretical, methodological, empirical,
and applications papers.

The proceedings of this conference will be published in Springer's Lecture Notes
in Computer Science series. Paper submission and
reviewing for ESWC2010 will be electronic via the conference submissions site.
Papers should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in
length and must be formatted according to the information for LNCS authors.

Papers must be submitted in PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) format and
will *not* be accepted in any other format. Papers that
exceed 15 pages or do not follow the LNCS guidelines risk being rejected
automatically without a review. Authors of accepted
papers will be required to provide semantic annotations for the abstract of
their submission -- details of this process will be
provided on the conference Web page at the time of acceptance. At least one
author of each accepted paper must register for the
conference.

*****

BEST PAPER AWARD

An award will be given to the best paper (or papers) submitted to the conference
as judged by the Program and Track Chairs in
collaboration with the Program Committee.

OVERVIEW
========
Nowadays, people leave their marks at a multitude of applications
distributed across the Web: They share their bookmarks in Delicious,
fill in profiles at social networking services such as Facebook and
Orkut, browse and buy products on Amazon, search with Google and
Yahoo and interact with diverse other sites for information and
services. This distributed and heterogeneous corpus of user data is
a valuable source of information for systems that aim for
personalization and user adaptation.

With the advent of Web 2.0, standards such as OpenID, RSS and OAuth, as
well as mashup tools like Yahoo pipes or Semantic Web pipes,
interlinking of different services has become easier. However, limited
interoperability still prevents applications to exchange, reuse, and
integrate their user models for personalization across application and
domain boundaries. Research carried out in the field of Semantic Web
supports applications to provide extensibility, flexibility,
interoperability and reusability. Further, the Linked Data initiative
and the Data Portability project focus on pragmatic approaches that
help applications to share and connect data.

Nevertheless, using the Web as a homogeneous knowledge infrastructure,
which serves as input for cross-application and cross-domain user
modeling, is still an unsolved vision, because syntactic and semantic
heterogeneity of the fragmented and distributed user data – which might
be unstructured – can hardly be handled by application developers. In
addition, requirements concerning privacy, scrutability and trust
complicate the intermixing of user data from different sources.

This workshop aims to bring together academic and industrial
researchers and practitioners in the fields of Intelligent User
Interfaces, Interaction Systems, Social Media, Semantic Web, User
Modeling, and Personalization in order to discuss theoretical and
practical knowledge, open research issues, applications, and
experiences for common benefit.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
==================
The workshop will tackle challenges posed by user modeling beyond
application boundaries, including, but not limited to,
the following themes:

* Aggregation and integration of distributed user data and profiles

Hello All,

(Apologies for cross posting)

As an undergraduate  student of the university of Westminster I am currently researching on building a scalable approach to collaborative ontology alignment.

(Please mail comments to supdeva at gmail dot com)

Thanks and Regards,

Supun Dewaraja.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CALL FOR PAPERS :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The 7th IEEE 2010 International Conference on Services Computing (SCC 2010)
===========================================================================
Sponsored by the Technical Committee on Services Computing (TC-SVC)\

IEEE Computer Society

http://conferences.computer.org/scc/2010
July 5-10, 2010, Miami, Florida, USA

Services account for a major part of the IT industry today. Companies
increasingly
like to focus on their core expertise area and use IT services to address all
their
peripheral needs. Services Computing is a new science which aims to study and
better
understand the foundations of this highly popular industry. It covers the
science
and technology of leveraging computing and information technology to model,
create,
operate, and manage business services. Since 2004, the International Conference

special knowledge,
which that access provides. Contents of abstracts submitted to conference
program committees should
be regarded as privileged as well, and handled in the same manner. The
Conference Publications Chair

conferences are expected to
provide an appropriate forum for the oral presentation and discussion of all
accepted papers. An
author, in offering a paper for presentation at an IEEE conference, or accepting
an invitation to
present a paper, is expected to be present at the meeting to deliver the paper.
In the event that
circumstances unknown at the time of submission of a paper preclude its
presentation by an author,
the program chair should be informed on time, and appropriate substitute
arrangements should be made.
In some cases it may help reduce no-shows for the Conference to require advance
registration together

The Protege Team is pleased to announce that we will be holding a Protege-OWL
Short Course at Stanford University from March 24th-26th, 2010. The course
provides an introduction to ontology development in OWL, both from a theoretical
standpoint and from a practical standpoint through hands-on use of the Protege
platform. The course also emphasizes how to use OWL ontologies, and other

1st Int’l Workshop on
Data Engineering meets the Semantic Web (DESWeb2010)
(Towards semantic-based data engineering for the Web)
Co-located with ICDE 2010
http://DESWeb2010.unimore.it

Modern web applications like Wiki’s, social networking sites and
mashups, are radically changing the nature of modern Web from a
publishing-only environment into a vivant place for information
exchange. The successful exploitation of this information largely
depends on the ability to successfully communicate the data semantics,
which is exactly the vision of the Semantic Web. In this context, new
challenges emerge for semantic-aware data management systems.

The contribution of the data management community in the Semantic Web
effort is fundamental. RDF has already been adopted as the
representation model and exchange format for the semantics of the data
on the Web. Although, until recently, RDF had not received
considerable attention, the recent publication in RDF format of large
ontologies with millions of entities from sites like Yahoo! and
Wikipedia, the huge amounts of microformats in RDF from life science
organizations, and the gigantic RDF bibliographic annotations from
publishers, have made clear the need for advanced management
techniques for RDF data.

On the other hand, traditional data management techniques have a lot
to gain by incorporating semantic information into their
frameworks. Existing data integration, exchange and query solutions
are typically based on the actual data values stored in the
repositories, and not on the semantics of these values. Incorporation
of semantics in the data management process improves query accuracy,
and permit more efficient and effective sharing and distribution
services. Integration of new content, on-the-fly generation of
mappings, queries on loosely structured data, keyword searching on
structured data repositories, and entity identification, are some of
the areas that can benefit from the presence of semantic knowledge
alongside the data.

The goal of DESWeb is to bring together researchers and practitioners
from both fields of Data Management and Semantic Web. It aims at
investigating the new challenges that Semantic Web technologies have
introduced and new ways through which these technologies can improve
existing data management solutions. Furthermore, it intends to study
what data management systems and technologies can offer in order to
improve the scalability and performance of Semantic Web applications.
