We lucked out early this morning. Our temp. was 34 deg. at 3:30 and then the
cloud cover moved in and our temp. started to go up. By 5:00 we were up to 38
deg. and now we are 39 and the sun hasn't even come up yet.
Off to the Dentist this morning - hate to go out in the cold, but didn't know it
was going to be this cold when I made the appointment.

from the North, it last for a day or two, three max, but this is a double blast,
one right after the other. We have had to run the pool all night long to keep
the pipes from freezing along with the solar panels. Tonight is going to go
down to 29 deg. which is a real freeze. Will pick as many oranges as we can
today or they will be lost. Yesterday I picked calamondins by the bags full.
Seeded and froze most and giving away the rest. This will be hard on the orange
growers and prices will be jacked up for orange juice and oranges.

same as yesterday, cold with a few flurries
Norma, make sure you bundle up when you go out, they say it's the coldest
weather in 9 years there.
Cameron's spending the day with his great-grandparents today, I'll have him on
Thursday. I guess I'll finish packing up the Christmas decorations today, maybe
I'll start painting the window frames in the living-room.

Thanks Earline - I layered.   The wind is really biting - in the sun it doesn't feel too bad, but in the shade with the wind, I feel like I'm north of the Mason-Dixon line.    I am staying home the rest of the week.   Making a big pot of pea soup now and going to bake something to help get moisture back in the house, it is so dry, I get zapped touching anything.   I also have a pan on the stove simmering with a stick of cinnamon and some cloves in it for the aroma.   Yesterday I raised the humidity 10 deg. during the day and lost it all during the night - so need to do something to gain more humiditure.

28 deg. this morning with a high of 53. I am very tired of this constant cold.
Made oatmeal for breakfast this morning - first time I've had that in years, but
needed something warm for the tummy. Won't know what damage this cold is doing
to outside plants for at least another week or so. I have four of the more
sensitive ones covered with sheets to keep the warmth in. They say to set your
thermostate at 68 deg. I have news for them - at 75 deg. this house still
feels cool.

Not as cold tonight.  We are expecting a heavy snow with drifting tomorrow.  Up to 6 inches maybe.  My sister came by and took my grocery list with her to the store.  I would rather do my own, but I am thankful for her help.  Everyone here is stocking up for the snow.

I had a huge stack of newspapers from several years with family articles and obits that I needed to keep.  They needed to be cut out and dated, then organized.  Got to scan next.  One job done that I had been putting off!  I am slower than I would have been before.  Very frustrating.  But it is almost done.  Just scanning to do.

Sorry to hear about more snow - but thank goodness for your sister.

It is unbelievable the bitter cold we are experiencing here in Florida. I have
never seen it as cold or as long. Today we are having a short warm up - should
reach 60, but then the next cold wave is going to move in and will be the
coldest so far this year. My shrubs are so sick looking, brown and drooping
leaves. Won't know until Feb. or March how many will be lost. Going to cover
a few more this afternoon to try to protect them. With the outer leaves burnt,
they cannot protect those under them.
Have to make a quick trip to Jupiter this morning - meeting Geo.'s brother half
way - he is driving up from West Palm Beach to pick up a spare laptop we have to
give to his wife's daughter.

26 deg. this morning with a high today of 45. One more cold night and then we
will start a very slow and gradual warm up - but at least something to look
forward to. I have had a pan on the stove to put moisture back into the air,
but I have not been able to get the humiture above 35%. No humidifiers on
furnaces down here because we normally are humid enough with cold spells that
usually last only a few days at a time. I get zapped touching anything and
everything.
Have to squeeze oranges today - Geo. picked most before the freeze and the few
that are left will have to be squeezed.
Made Calamondin marmalade yesterday to use up the Calamondins we had to pick
before they froze. One new orange tree we planted last year is not going to
survive. I have a lot of very sick looking hibiscus that may or may not make
it. Only Spring will tell for us for sure. The leaves are dryed and burnt and
shrivled from the cold, but the main branches and stems may still be alive and
make it through.
I will be inside all day today - there is nothing out there that needs my
attention.

Norma, I hope youdon't lose too many plants with this cold weather.
Sheri, you sounded like you were having such a great time with your arm in a
cast, I thought it might be fun to have one too. I went and bought some skates
on Saturday and went skating with the grandkids on a pond next door to their
house. I haven't been on skates since I was a teen. Well, I was doing good, then
I decided to skate around the pond with a coffee and I went down while holding
my cup and ended up with a couple of breaks in my left wrist. I got a half-cast
on yesterday and have to go to Windsor first thing tomorrow morning to see a
specialist and get another one on. I think I'll hang the skates up for a few
weeks.

but I have not been able to get the humiture above 35%. No humidifiers on
furnaces down here because we normally are humid enough with cold spells that
usually last only a few days at a time. I get zapped touching anything and
everything.

they cannot protect those under them.

Wow - I am so sorry Earline.  Now we have two in a arm cast - well, I hope the Grandchildren had a great time - they will always remember Grandma's fun times and her sacrifices.
We are still fighting the cold.  Freezing again last night and one more time tonight and then they say we will return to normal temps.   Can't dwell on the plants yet - won't know for sure how many are lost until I give them their spring pruning.   So far we have been most fortunate that we saved the solar heater and pool pipes from freezing.  One more night of running the pool and we should be in a safe area.  At least we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, which makes it a little easier to cope.

We are supposed to have our January thaw this week, three days in a row above
freezing not long enough to thaw anything out though.

We are at 55deg. and it feels good after freezing temps. We will have one more
night of running the pool (just at 32 deg.) and after that, we are going to be
warm again. Wow, I don't know how I ever stood those cold hard winters of the
North, but I don't want to ever see a cold spell like this one again. It even
got down to 30 deg. at the Florida Keys which is amazing.

Surprise - we went down to 27 deg. again last night, but we will have a high
today of 58 and they are talking a warm up. Four houses down the stree they
had a water main break, so we are now without water. Didn't tell us they were
going to shut off the water - but we noticed at 7:30 the faucet did not turn on.
Thanks goodness Geo. made coffee already and he keeps a large jug of water in
the refrig.
I think I will run the vacuum now and hope that we will get water back before
lunch time. I am not going to complain, because worse things could happen.
I don't think the water main froze, I think it was just a break from lousy
workmanship when it was installed about four or five years ago.
We are using pool water to flush the comode.

Well the nice weather is not here.  It was supposed to be nice today and that did not happen.  The snow is still laying around.  Boy I am tired of snow.

I got the cast off my leg today.  Not so good.  Still can't put any weight on it for a while.  It swelled up right after they cut the thing off.  What is that about!?  I expected it to be ok by now!  Also got signed in to phys. therapy for my arm.  Don't have full control over it and may not achieve that completely, but it is much better and I can type.  Slowly.  Makes me tired.

I can and am sympathizing with you, Earline.  I have decided I hate casts more than anything I can think of.  I'm so sorry you are broken.  Perhaps you should think of giving up skating.  LOL

Trying to get into the swing of things again.  Though mornings are no longer my best times.  <groan> :o)

It's cold, but the sun is brilliant.  The snow is wet around the edges so I am filled with hope!  It is supposed to be up to 40 tomorrow.

I am playing catch up now.  Weeeeeee........ LOL

Sheri - You've had a long time out of the grove - it will take time to get
re-organized. My Granddaughter had her surgery on her back before Thanksgiving
and she is just getting back to more normalcy. She has a personal trainer now
to help her with re-gaining her strength in that leg that was numb for so long.
We are in the warm up mode. Had to got to Patrick AFB today for
prescriptions and groceries. It was nice over at the Beach. The sun was out,
no breeze and it felt more like 70 then the 55 deg. that it actually was. We
had a high today of 62 and it feels like a heat wave. No freezing tonight and
warmer tomorrow.

Warmer today.  Now most of the snow is gone.  The grass is showing.  Hope that keeps up.  I'd be happy to see no snow.

Glad your daughter is getting back to normal, Norma.

high of 38 today
Sheri, I think I'll give up drinking and skating, lol, if I didn't have the
coffee I could have broken my fall instead of my wrist.
I am not expecting to see the grass for a while yet. I would like to go skating
when my wrist is better, so I hope that it doesn't stay warm for too long. My
cast has to stay on for six weeks.

I have to keep reminding myself that this is still January and a long winter
ahead - have no idea what records we can still break, but any break in the cold
is always good news.
Earine
If you enjoy skating - keep it up, but make sure you have good padding for when
you slip or fall.
Just a note for the both of you - have either of you had a dexa-scan?

This is a good time to have the bone density checked to make sure you are not
experiencing bone loss. Bones will break a lot easier if the bones are
thining. There is plenty of therapy out there to strengthen them.

I have been scheduled for a bone density scan.  I was diagnosed as having osteoporosis when they found that the leg break was a non-trauma fracture at the hospital.  We just need to see how bad it is.  Terrible way to find out.

Snow is melting, melting and melting!  Still in the low 40's tonight.  Going to get to 50 by Sunday so maybe it will warm up down your way, Norma!

Very good Sheri - there are great medications for osteo. that actually will rebuild the bone density.   I get a dexa-scan every other year and for a while my density was improving - but the last two just held it's own, which is still better then loosing.   For severe cases, they can give an infusion which lasts for a year and is very effective - I am not considered eligible for that one.
Still have not found proof of the parents names for my Daniel Sullivan.   Every thing I find is Timothy Sullivan and Mary Driscoll, but my sister told me that it was Timothy Sullivan and Ellen Driscoll.  Either she is wrong or my Timothy and Ellen are in a witness protection program - virtually nothing.

It is almost 40 this morning.  Snow is gone!  We are supposed to get some rain tomorrow, and I believe we will.  It looks like it could pour right now.  Very dreary.

I just printed out family group sheets of the families I want to work on now.  I think it will be helpful.  I will know what I have and what I need, can make notes on the sheets, and know what to enter into the program.  I hope it makes it easier!

A smart idea Sheri - I used to take group sheets with me to the Family History Center.   Many times when I finished reading my film, I would find something interesting that someone else ordered and many times, I had better luck with their film then my own.   Having the group sheets with me was helpful.
Today I conquered the embroidery machine - the new software is more complicated then the old one. Actually it is probably the same but I am still learning how to use it.   Made my first design today - copied one that I made about 40 or 50 years ago, and now I have to find out how to finish it so I can do the actual embroidery.

Now I am going gather information for my sister on the Ramsey family tree.   Her daughter's family lives in one of the Ramsey Mansion's down in Southern Virginia.   I did some research for her once before about six years ago, so now I will just add to it.

Weather is nice here for the past couple of days.   Staying in the more comfortable range, but severe storms expected late tonight.

72 deg. sunny and going to be a nice day.   The severe storms went North of us and South of us during the night - we lucked out.

I love going through the newspaper archives - and managed to find a picture of my GrGrandfather and GrGrGrandfather by doing that - so good luck Earline.   Too bad more newspapers aren't on line - I believe I could find a lot more information.

I don't like dreary days any day of the week - too hard to get motivated. It
was very chilly walking this morning - 53 deg. but felt much colder. Very
breezy yesterday and today.
Glad to hear brother is going to break the drearies for you - change of scenery
is always nice.
Going to try to get some more research in this afternoon - my New Years
resolution is to create time each week for my own research.

Very foggy morning.  I am sooooo sore today.  Me and my quad-cane walked all day yesterday and I slept wrong on my arm last night.  I am sore.
Good news is I got a new yearbook up on the county site last night!!  So things are getting back to normal!

I spent a couple of hours yesterday and today going through the archives for
1921. I found an article about my aunt's death from a fire when she was a baby
and a mention of my grandmother being sick when she was eight. I found a George
Bratt obit but haven't found an obit for George Bradt yet. I'll keep looking.

It's a little warmer today.  It was raining lightly when I woke but it seems to have stopped now.  I have an appointment this afternoon and I intend to use the cane instead of the chair.  Still having swelling problems but I think/hope I can stand it.

I transcribed marriage index records yesterday and made quite a dent in them!
