Does anyone know when it is? I have a feeling in my bones that we'll be
there, so need to know before I plan a holiday in February.

I was thinking the same - surely this guy looks a twat whichever
way it is explained to him - 1) he is clearly ignorant about football,
as otherwise there would be no need to explain to him "logically"
what the LDV Vans Trophy is - and therefore 2) it just reinforces
the Albion's case if it can be shown that Withdean was more
proportionally full for that game than any other ground in the
country that night, for the equivalent fixture.
Does anyone have last week's paper still with these figures in?

Yes but we are top entertainment so what's wrong with twice in a week.
Otherwise it suggests that the former dishonest ones have done us a favour.

No, Leigh is in Lancashire, near Wigan. But Hull have a high level of
support anyway, and that figure is no higher proportionally (e.g., in
terms of capacity, and/or usual league crowds) than the Albion's. Of
the list below I would say only Mansfield's crowd looks unusually
high compared to the Albion's and considering all other
circumstances.

maybe some of the clubs slashed ticket prices..... while ours were
still reasonably high for watching reserve team football... even after
a near 50% cut.
And you're forgetting that huge travelling support that Leigh RMI will
have taken to Humberside!

Definitely a local derby of sorts, with a rivalry normally based on t'Rugby
League

travelling and it's 45 minutes away)

enormous crowd either.)

Don't forget that lots of Albion fans travel quite a distance to Withdean.
Would you travel to watch the reserves from, say, Horsham or further when
the cost must be a total of about 30 pounds per person, when you've already
done it on the Saturday and plan to go to Bristol the following Saturday at
perhaps another 45 pounds per person. And Wycombe don't have much away
support. I can remember a League Cup match against Reading at the Goldstone
in the 80s on a wet Tuesday and I don't think we had 3,000.

The other attendances are pretty awful - makes you wonder if anybody made a
penny on the matches, once they'd paid the police, stewards, gatemen,
electric bills etc.

I tried ringing up to get tickets for the game on the
day so they could be left out on the night, but
couldn't get through and gave up !
Also bear in mind you can't pay on the gate, which
puts off the casual follower.

It's not actually 'high' - it's half their average home
league crowd - like in our case. QED (etc).

Engineering works are planned for the Saturday 10th November and Saturday
17th November. (No trains between Brighton and Haywards Heath)
The weekend of the 24th should see normal service resumed (That's according
to the list of November/December Engineering works that I read at Aldrington
station this morning!)

Another factor to bear in mind is that Lewes had 1,800 that night for their
FA Cup match against Mangotsfield. I reckon there were a few hundred Albion
fans who'd decided to go to the Dripping Pan rather than Withdean that night.

I went to the Dripping Pan that night. Superb. And let's face it the LDV
is a tin-pot mickey mouse D-list small-time show for the reserve team.
Amazing how many actually DO turn up...
What's the break-even figure for Withdean, given that it costs us =A334,000 (=
I
believe) to stage a match there?
Anyone good at maths?

I'm away for two weeks, may be able to get online in Jamaica, mayb not.

I must admit there was no contest as far as I was concerned. I have no
allegiance to Lewes FC although I accept that, as a fixture, it had a certain
attraction, and the match against Stoke will have even more so. I do,
however, wish Lewes well. It will be a brilliant day out for the regular fans
plus all the additional people who will go just for the occasion. It's
doubtful they will progress any further but at least they will have made
history for themselves.
Although the LDV Vans Trophy is not a major contest, I still opted to go as
the team I support is involved, even though, at this stage, it is represented
mainly by Reserves! Somehow I couldn't muster any enthusiasm for the Lewes
match but I am not crirticising Ralph or anyone else who did. It was
doubtless a brilliant experience to witness and I dare say, for those who did
go, one they wouldn't have missed.
I wonder whether Lewes will have gained a few more fans through it?
I must admit there was no contest as far as I was concerned. I have no
allegiance to Lewes FC although I accept that,
as a fixture, it had a certain attraction, and the match against Stoke will have
even more so. I do, however, wish Lewes
well. It will be a brilliant day out for the regular fans plus all the
additional people who will go just for the
occasion. It's doubtful they will progress any further but at least they will
have made history for themselves.

Although the LDV Vans Trophy is not a major contest, I still opted to go as
the team I support is involved, even
though, at this stage, it is represented mainly by Reserves! Somehow I
couldn't muster any enthusiasm for the Lewes
match but I am not crirticising Ralph or anyone else who did. It was doubtless a
brilliant experience to witness and I
dare say, for those who did go, one they wouldn't have missed.

I wonder whether Lewes will have gained a few more fans through it?

Just avoid mentioning anything unpleasant, and use the
'passive voice'. That way you can never be held responsible
for the position you purportedly support. It worked a treat
when I wrote Warren a reference last year ;-)

I have a childs ticket for Port Vale going spare.
It can be upgraded to an Adult ticket on the day of the match if you so
desire.
It is in "G" block, Row D, 1/2 way inside the west half of the pitch.
e-mail me off-list if you want it.

Well I used to go to watch Lewes whenever Albion were playing away (didn't
have the money for long haul treks in those days). But I hadn't been to the
Dripping Pan for at least 15 years until I saw them that night - amazingly,
the ground hasn't changed at all!!! Perhaps the money they'll earn from the
cup run will be enough to give the old place a lick of paint.
Btw, as the Stoke match has now been moved to the day after Albion's tie with
Shrewsbury, I wonder how many Albion fans will be going to Withdean AND the
Britannia Stadium that weekend?
