Many urban environments - from New York to California to abroad - are degraded but can be restored by modern ecological science. This work can add environmental, social, and economic renewal to our cities. Rutgers Professor of Ecology Steven N. Handel will discuss his research and projects to advance urban restoration ecology, including his current project in Orange County, California, where the old El Toro Marine Air Base is being transformed into the 1,400 acre Orange County Great Park.

An international competition was held to choose a park design team, which includes Professor Handel.

Learn more about this and other innovative projects on our website, http://sebs.rutgers.edu/development.

Professor Handel studies the restoration of native habitats, adding sustainable ecological services, biodiversity, and public amenities to our landscape. He serves as director of the Center for Urban Restoration Ecology, a joint initiative of Rutgers and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Also, he is an adjunct professor of ecology at the University of California at Irvine. He received his B.A. at Columbia College and M.S. and Ph.D. at Cornell University.

He has worked on the ecological restoration of major urban areas, including the Fresh Kills landfill and new Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York City; the landscape for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing; and, currently, the new Orange County Great Park in California. Professor Handel has lectured throughout the world on the possibilities of improving the environment in urban centers
