So far we've collected $2,900 towards our $5,000 goal. We're so close on this
and every little bit helps. Please consider donating anything you can spare to
get Matt down to Florida to celebrate his 33rd birthday. We can't do this alone.
We have a lot of activities planned while Matt is here, so if you donate and can
make it down, I'm sure you'll have a great time hanging with Matt the Aqua-man.
Here's the link once more to go and donate. Matt Johnston Florida Fund

Good Diving,
Jim, someone inadvertently donated money to the Ocean of Opportunity (the old 501c that helped get him here to dive. Can you send out a separate email and let them know to contact TIB Bank directly 800-233-6330 and ask to donate to the Matt Johnston Florida fund or go to www.conchrepublicdivers.com/matt.htm. Sorry for the confusion but we are trying to get this sorted out quickly.

Dear Friends of Diveheart,
I’m reaching out to you personally to help a young man who is a friend and inspiration to me and many around the world…..his name is Matt Johnston.
Matt contracted Muscular Dystrophy as a young boy and his life expectancy was just 30 years……..because of the incredible dedication and love of his father….who is his personal caretaker 24//7 Matt is about to celebrate his 33rd birthday…….Now, you can help him celebrate it and make his dream come true.
If you have been to the History of Diving Museum, you know Matt’s remarkable story…….a young Minnesotan who became the first ventilator-dependent quadriplegic in the world to SCUBA dive. Matt is turning 33 on January 12, 2010, and Diveheart is teaming up with Conch Republic Divers, and The History of Diving Museum to bring Matt to the Florida Keys to realize his dream to again scuba dive in the ocean for a once in a lifetime birthday celebration, January 10- 17, 2010……one that very well could be his last.
We need your help to make this dream trip a reality for the man who made diving history by not only pushing the limits, but defining them. Please consider making a donation to the Matt Johnston Florida Fund by visiting any TIB Bank or online to contribute through Conch Republic Divers. If you would like to personally sponsor Matt’s $5,000 once in a lifetime scuba adventure trip please contact me at Diveheart….
Thanks again for your continued friendship and support.

Back in 2006 Conch Republic Divers http://conchrepublicdivers.com/ hosted Matt
Johnston to come down and go scuba diving. Now that in itself is not a big
thing, but the fact that Matt has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, confined to a
wheel chair and on a ventilator is. He made history November 2006 by being the
first person in his condition to ever go scuba diving.
In 2006 Matt was 29 years old and this January he will be turning 33. People in
his condition are not expected to live past the age of 30.
I was also able to contact the Today Show who in 2006 came down to document his
historic dive. You can see that episode from the link here. Matt Johnston On The
Today Show. http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-us&bran...867060&from=05
Matt made history on that day and as a result the History of Diving Museum in
Islamorada to put up an exhibit to his remarkable dive. Matt has never seen the
exhibit and I'm working on getting him down here for a week in January to see
the exhibit and maybe get him a swim with the dolphins the Island Dolphin Care.
Here's the link to his website. http://divingadream.org/
I'm going to bring Matt down one more time from January 10th – 17th to see his
exhibit, swim with the dolphins, and just hang out. Matt's birthday is January
12th. So it's going to be a big birthday party too. Not sure how many more he
has.
I've set up a fund for Matt at TIB Bank here in Tavernier.
Matt Johnson Florida Fund
C/O TIB Bank
91980 Overseas Hwy
Tavernier, FL 33070
(305)852-9500
You can also donate at this link. http://conchrepublicdivers.com/matt.htm
All proceeds to the fund will be used to get Matt here. We're going to need
around $5000 to get him down, provide lodging, transportation, and some
activities while here.
Also Frank of the M/V Spree and myself will be cutting our hair to donate it to
Locks Of Love http://locksoflove.org/ and taking pledges per inch of hair we
donate. This money will
also got to Matt's fund. More to come or go on this.
Anyway for those that know Matt know he's a great guy and if any of you could
help fund his trip, it would be very much appreciated. When I think I have
problems....well I don't.
Good Diving,

Key West, FL, July 9, 2009—Florida Keys Community College was once again the destination for a group of inspirational adventurers seeking to overcome disabilities through the healing powers of diving. Diveheart, a Chicago-based non-profit, organized the trip to FKCC’s James E. Lockwood Jr. School of Diving and Underwater Technology last week. The enthusiastic participants from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago enjoyed SCUBA diving and snorkeling in the college's dive lagoon/underwater classroom on the Key West campus.
Diveheart provides and supports educational SCUBA and snorkeling experience programs to children, adults, and veterans with disabilities in the hope of providing both physical and psychological therapy. Through SCUBA diving, the oceans and lakes of the world become a forgiving, weightless environment, providing perfect buoyancy to a child or adult who would otherwise struggle on land. Diveheart’s goal is to instill a “CAN DO” spirit in all of their participants; their experiences underwater build confidence and a sense of independence that enables them to face their own life challenges and overcome barriers that before might have seemed insurmountable.
FKCC and Diveheart were brought together by the generosity of diving pioneer James E. Lockwood, Jr., who bequeathed funds to both institutions to further advance their respective diving programs. Since then, college faculty and staff have worked with Diveheart to introduce divers with disabilities, particularly wounded veterans, to FKCC diving course curriculum, such as underwater archeology and coral reef restoration.
Diveheart hopes to inspire a passion for scuba diving in veterans with disabilities; then, to help them focus on career opportunities in scuba diving, marine, and aquatic sciences.
“That’s where FKCC comes in,” says Diveheart President, Jim Elliot. “Imagine if we could convert all the sedentary hours of a veteran with a disability to productive hours researching and participating in something like coral reef restoration. It would be a win-win… it would be helping the individual and the environment.”
FKCC Diving Director, Bill Chalfant, echoes this sediment, “We are honored to work with Diveheart and hope that what these individuals learn and experience at FKCC has a positive impact on their lives.”
FKCC will be the destination for many more Diveheart adventure trips with groups from a variety of organizations for children, adults, and veterans overcoming disabilities. "My goal is to bring down groups all year long from all over the U.S.," says Elliot.
FKCC will next welcome Diveheart adventurers on July 28th, when the group brings kids from Chicago’s Shriners Children’s Hospital for more life-changing underwater experiences.

Johnston Team up to train local Minn
instructors & buddies
Hey Jim,
This is a great idea. I think Matt would be a great Ambassador for disable
folks achieving their dream.
"YOU ARE ONLY LIMITED BY YOUR DREAMS"!
To further the thinking on this I was wondering if we could include
Shake-A-Leg, ADA,
and DiveHeart in an event centering around a few disable folks from Matt's home
town in MN. Bring them and Matt down to do a sailing adventure at Shake-A-Leg
and follow that up with a swim with the Dolphins and of course get them out
diving with Conch.

Matt,
It was great talking to you today…. I’m very excited about
the prospect of teaming up with you to bring Diveheart training to Minnesota.
Together we can bring instructors and dive buddies to your
area and build a team that can help on your next trip as well as helping other
local Minnesota residents
who have disabilities experience the thrill of scuba diving.
I commend you on wanting to reach out and help others with
disabilities…..Diveheart will do everything we can to support this effort.
I’ve attached a Diveheart training flyer that will have to
be customized for our training there…..Remember, Diveheart subsidizes a portion
of all the training…..and anyone who has taken Diveheart training in the past
can refresh for FREE….that way it keeps the team sharp.
I’ve copied some of your team on this email so they can be
aware of the effort to bring this opportunity to your home town….
I’ve also attached some photos from November 07 when I was
able to join you on your dive in the keys….I’ll burn a CD of all the photos and
get them to you…..
Contact me when you’ve had a chance to review everything……

Huge congrats…..I was there the
night of the opening…..Diveheart brought a group of quadriplegic kids
from Illinois down for a scuba adventure trip…..and we caught the last
hour of the opening.
It is an outstanding tribute to your hard
work and passion in following your dream…..and hats off to everyone who
helped from the Dive industry……
I’ve attached a couple articles that
you might find interesting…..we just had Tammy Duckworth in the water….she
was certified before she was shot down in IRAQ as a chopper pilot…..
Thanks again for helping to move the Dive
industry closer to understanding how powerful scuba is for those with
disabilities….

on "Divind a Dream" exhibit
I hope everyone's doing well. I thought I'd share an
exciting update
with my family and friends. My diving a dream exhibit has turned out
awesome. History of diving museum did a great job on it. It's located
in Islamorada, Florida Keys. The unveiling was on Wednesday
August, 13.
I was there via my webcam. About 50 people were there. It sounds like
they raised most of the funds that the museum needed. I'm very honored
to be in the museum, it's something totally unexpected. It's very
realistic; it looks like I'm actually diving among the ocean life.
There are a few pictures you can view under my photo area on this group
pictures.
