During our testing we found that even though wax's longer molecular chain will
generate more heat than alcohol, the stove design was a lot less efficient in
getting that heat to the pot. Our water always bolied faster, generally
significantly faster, on our jet type stoves. This means dinner sooner and less
fuel used.
In terms of allowing progression within our sections, we found that the buddy
burners are good for cubs and the jetting stoves good for scouts. One builds
upon the other.
Want more fun? We're (and by we I mean the leaders of my troop) are currently
testing out jam jet jars which we hope to use as a really cool campfire program
starting or ending. We did our first test in my backyard last night and it was
really awesome. We're trying to scale it up though such that we can use water
cooler jugs instead of jam jars.

instead of a liquid fuel and is lightweight for backpacking. It also doesn't
leak. Google it and there are lots of hits explaining how to make them. We make
ours from tuna cans.
