I was just searching the Scouting files on my computer and came across this
little gem I did
not even know I had. It is a 30 second BSA commercial for Cub Scouting from
2003(?). I wish I
would have found this a couple weeks ago. I might have been able to use it to
promote Cub
Scouting in the community.

Check it out and see what you think of it.

This came to us on CD as part of the Fun At Every Turn recruiting
materials. There was a a Flash based series of games that you played.
When you beat them all, you got to see the video. It is a Quicktime
titled FAET.MOV. I don't know if it ever made it on the airwaves as an
official commercial.

2003 is about right. I put it on permanent loop at our
display/recruiting table during our school's open house. It caught a
few young men's notice.

I loved the Cub Scout promo video! I'm actually searching for
something similar that was a Webelos promo, which maybe was 1-3 minutes
long. Anyone have any ideas where to find it? Thanks!

Greetings!

If you haven't seen the sort of (but not) endorsement for Zanfel
Laboratories on the National web site -click on Boy Scouts Adult
Leaders then Publications & Resources - and check it out or look at
their web site www.zanfel.com. Zanfel Laboratories was very kind to
send me a nice box of brochures.

The product is expensive, but for those who are suffering from poison
ivy, oak or sumac, it is well worth it. My son, who seems to get
poison ivy just by looking at it, and has to take Prednisone to help
control it, was able to be itch free in just a few hours by using the
product. Your experience my vary, but I'm glad I found it.

Even if you don't try the product, the brochures are a good resource
for outdoor trainings or at Roundtable.

About a month ago I posted to the list that I had volunteered to
conduct Venturing Leader Specific Training for a local district. At
the time I expressed my concern about the published shedule, that it
cut the 5 hour training down to less than 3 hours. I thought I would
post another message with a short after action report.

The training happened yesterday. I was pleased to have eight
trainees. I was expecting five or fewer, so I was pleasantly surprised
to have more. I used the PowerPoint created by George Crowl that is
available on usscouts.org or on a DVD that is being distributed in
Venturing circles. With the abreviated schedule I was definately
rushed, but managed to get through most of the material. I went over
by a half hour having gone as fast as I could. The participants had a
lot of great questions which took time, but were beneficial to
everyone. I stressed multiple times that the trainees would need to go
home and do their homework and read the Venturing Leader Manual on
their own.

I considered the day a success when one of the participants left saying
he was going to have to go buy a green Venturing shirt now.

It is the season again when we all start ramping up our training efforts. How
did you go about setting your training goals this year? I know what the BSA
formula is - you look at how many untrained leaders there are, and set a
percentage based on that. I tried something different - I made an estimate of
how many new Cub leaders we recruit each year in the district, and based my goal
partly on that, and partly on my statistics from last year. Last year we had 311
attendances at all the courses run by the Cub Scout training staff (NLE, PST,
BALOO, Outdoor Skills for Webelos Leaders and YPT), so this year we're shooting
for 350.

Now I'm working really hard at promoting so I can hit the goal, so I'd like to
hear suggestions about that, too!

Jamie,
A couple of long-term thoughts:
Our district promotes free PWD if the packs comply with/reach certain
requirements. This could include a "trained" percentage.
Establish pack trainers in all units to help you do your job - promoting
training. Getting CMs and CCs to understand that their job is much easier if
their leaders are trained, and know what they're doing.

Free food...LOL

Out of my little bit of experience:
In our old district we had some people who just couldn't make it to
training. They always offered one session on Thursday nights (meeting night
for most packs in he district), and one on Saturday. Since we still have a
lot of manufacturing around metro Detroit, some were on mandatory overtime
on Saturdays. Sometimes schedules shift, making it harder for people to
participate.

I attended NLE and Position Specific with my pack members, even though I had
helped been staff for our council's Jungle Book. The "busy" excuse didn't
fly that day, and we became 100% trained.

Our district training staff is bringing training to the troops. We are
participating with a troop in a neighboring city in a coupleof weeks. Our
training staff also offers training at the camporees.

Hope that helps,

I think you're talking about the "I wanna be a Webelos" video, which might
still be around at your council office. Check with your DE. (It was on a
DVD with two other clips, the "Gotta get a blue suit" Cub recruiting
video, and the parent recruiting, which ran about 11 minutes.)

Greetings!

Sorry for the cross post! I need help with the proper range commands for an
archery range. I have the correct call line for a BB range and the person that
will be helping with an archery range, asked if I could print up the call line
for her. Just so that some of you don't panic - this is for the NH Jamboree
(council event). I am a newly trained BB range officer. :-) I volunteered to
write up the BB call line and laminate them (ya know for the liquid sunshine
that we tend to get at Scouting events). Because of this, this other person
asked if I could do the same for the archery range. Not having been trained on
the archery part of shooting sports, I don't know what the proper range commands
are.

Any help in the matter would be much appreciated. I have a call into my son.
He is (hopefully) looking in the archery merit badge book for the commands.

In support of the NAA, BSA has adopted (or standardized on) just the
whistle codes:
2 - Two blasts: Move up to the firing line.
1 - One blast: Fire the proper number of arrows.
3 - Three blasts: Cease firing. Move to the target. Retrieve and score
arrows.
4 - Fore or more blasts: Cease firing. Stay where you are. This is an
EMERGENCY. The officials will tell the archers what action to take
either verbally or by the whistle code.

However, we have acknowledged that some of our event owners will not
want to have regular use of whistles during larger events and we have
offered the alternative:
Archers to the shooting line
Begin shooting
Retrieve your arrows.
Cease-fire

We have given a bit of a face-lift to the BSA BB and archery course.
You will find that and a few other resources at our Council Shooting
Sports Committee website: www.nstarshooting.org.

I've got three sessions of the BSA BB Range Officer training that I am
presenting this weekend.

You would have to go to council websites for listings of VLST and
VLSC courses. The regional venturing sites do not list these.

> Powder Horn

You want the Powder Horn website at http://www.powderhorn-bsa.org/

> Kodiak

You want the Kodiak website at http://www.kodiak-bsa.org/

But be adviced that Kodiak can be run by a Crew, so it wouldn't be
listed there. Typically you're only going to see Kodiak courses
listed when the course director is open to allowing anyone to come.

> Seabadge

You want the Sea Scout website at http://www.seascout.org/
The Seabadge page is here:
http://www.seascout.org/for_leaders/adult_recognition/adult-
seabadge.html
and should be updated, but you might also want to check the 4
regional sea scout pages located here:
http://www.seascout.org/frames/Resources_for_Adults.html#organization

> Sea Scout Officers Specialized Training

Again, this is pretty much never listed above the council level.
This is sometimes offered prior to Seabadges courses.

> Sea Scout Advance Leadership Training

You want the SEAL page at the National Sea Scout website:
http://www.seascout.org/about/program/training_resources/seal.html

Courses are offered during the summer, and the 2008 courses should be
updated in a couple of months.

> Youth Protection

You want to use the on-line Venturing Youth Protection Training
available at the BSA Online Learning Center: http://olc.scouting.org/

This is the YPT the adults take. The YPT for youth is a DVD that
crews would show.

> Wood Badge

You want the Wood Badge website http://www.woodbadge.org/

But I know a lot of courses don't get put here.

>
> I am thinking of training like...
> Leave No Trace

For LNT training, go to http://lnt.org/

But LNT training organized within the BSA will not be there. I do
see notices over on the Venturinglist for some of this. The idea is
to run training courses at the National High Adventure bases to
training people who can do LNT training at the council level.

> Wilderness First Aid

I am not aware of any central repository for this training.

> OKPIK

OKPIK is only done at Northern Tier. So you would go to the Northern
Tier website for this. http://www.ntier.org/

>
> I'm also looking for short descriptions & links to such courses.
> Thanks!

Several of the above will give you that data.

Also.

Central Region Venturing: http://www.crventuring.org/

Southern Region Venturing: http://srventuring-bsa.org/

Unfortunately, Cronk's Challenge is starting to look like another good
idea going nowhere.

Most councils are continuing to act as if more recruiting hype will always
make up for poor programs and substandard retention. No matter how
many boys and families are driven out by untrained leaders and dismally
dull meetings, we can always lure more in and keep our numbers looking good.

One might think that there would have been some support from the
National Cub Scouting Division but nary a word in Scouting magazine
and only brief mention by Ted Rohling at the tail end of CubCast, National's
Cub Scout podcast.

Bob and Chris covered it much more thoroughly and much earlier in their

I wonder how Rick Cronk feels about it.

I'm been reading the email threads about frustrations over communications
involved with Cronk's Challenge.
I guess I'm just luckier than many of you.
Our Council Executive is the one who introduced me to the Challenge.
Our Professional Scouter responsible for training has handled
communications effectively, and is very strong on furnishing me with
updates.

In fact, after talking with her about the program, we "upped the ante" to
include a friendly competition between the Districts, offering a cake to
the District that shows the highest increase in trained leaders by the
middle of '08. The winners will "take the cake" in more ways than one :)

Good luck to the rest of you - I believe the challenge is going to be a
wonderful way to get trainers even more motivated than we already are, and
beneficial to all the boys whose leaders get trained.

Unfortunately, Cronk's Challenge is starting to look like another good
idea going nowhere.

Most councils are continuing to act as if more recruiting hype will always
make up for poor programs and substandard retention. No matter how
many boys and families are driven out by untrained leaders and dismally
dull meetings, we can always lure more in and keep our numbers looking
good.

As a challenge to the Packs in my home District, as Cub Training
Chair, I offered myself as incentive to any unit currently not having
100% trained leaders presently and hitting that level by the end of
the year - for whatever purpose they choose - put me in a dunk tank,
target for a pie throwing session, kiss a pig, whatever...

If I get ONE unit not at 100% trained up to that level, we have made
some good progress and set the example for other units.

Wow what a great challenge. I wish this council would do more to support
the program and play less number games (recruiting and money). By the
way me picks up a v virtual ball and throws it at the virtual dunking
tank and waits to see if I hit the target and someone makes a big
splash. Good luck all, get as many people trained as you can that alone
will make a big splash and lots of young peoples lives.

Can anyone tell me where I might find a listing of the changes made in
the new release of the Cub Scout Leader Book? The new one has a yellow
cover.

Thank you!
