offered to scout leaders. The list is primarily aimed at members of
The Boy Scouts Of America (BSA), but other scouting groups are welcome.

If you see a question on this list that you don't feel is directly
related to training, please DON'T reply to it on the list. If you
choose to reply to it, send the reply directly to the author.

If you see a thread that you don't feel is related to training and it
doesn't die on it's own, please send a message to the group owner

PROBLEMS GETTING INTO FILES / DATABASES / POLLS / ETC.
--------------------------
There are a couple of things that you can do to improve your chances of
accessing the web based group areas on YahooGroups.

1) First, login (see number 2 if you don't understand this) and then
try going to the directory instead of directly to the file name. For
instance, if you are looking for a file try going to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scouter_t/ then click on "Files" and then
the file name. If you are looking for a database try going to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scouter_t/ clicking on "Database" and
then the database name.

2) You may have to associate your Yahoo ID with your e-mail address. To
do this go to http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups/ and try logging in. If
you don't see the Scouter_T group (or you don't have a Yahoo login ID)
you will need to do the following:

If you don't have a Yahoo account click on the "New Member? Click here
to register for FREE!" link on the right side of the page.

Once you have your id you will need to go to the "Account Wizard"
(http://groups.yahoo.com/memwiz) to associate your e-mail address with
your Yahoo account. The easiest way I've found to do this is to enter
the E-Mail address you want to use in the box under "Don't have a
password? Forgot your password?". Then click on Continue.

You should now be at a second screen that will ask for a confirmation
number. That number will have been automatically e-mailed to the
e-mail address you entered on the previous page. Get your mail from
that account and copy the code into the space provided and click on
continue.

You will now be asked to login. Follow the instructions and you should
be logged into Yahoo with your e-mail address associated with your
account and you should have full access to all web based areas of
YahooGroups.

Hey,

The Fort Knox Scouting community wants to help too, but we need a little
more specific guidance. . . . What exactly can we do to help? Folks around here
kicked around the idea of raising money and donating it to the Red Cross. .
.kinda indirect assistance... and of course, collecting food - but then you run
into how to get it down to the folks sitting on the bridge on I-10 that need
it....

What are the relief efforts of other troops/districts/councils going to
look like?

Mark,

I am trying to get in touch with you regarding how we might help. I am the Boy
Scout Roundtable Commissioner for the Polaris District here in the Houston area
(North side of town). We have close to 150 units (Troops, Packs, Crews, Ships,
and Varsity Teams) in our district and I know that they will be eager to help.

If you are still in the Houston area, I would like to personally invite you and
your family to be our guests at our Roundtable on Thursday evening, September 1.
We typically gather around 7:00 and kick-off our Roundtable at 7:30. I thought
this might be a great way to get the message out and make it a little more
personal.

If you are able to pick up this message, please contact me at 281-636-9470. I
would love to treat you and your family to dinner before the Roundtable.

Yours in Scouting,

Don Cullum

I am writing to you from a Best Western motel room in Alvin, TX. We left home on
Saturday: Me, my wife, my Life Scout son, my Venturer daughter, our cat and our
rabbit. We thought it would be just like the other times: we go away for a long
weekend, and come on back after the storm.

Not this time. We have been unable to find out whether our home is still there,
but we have reason to hope we were lucky. The area around our home, and our
chartered organization, is some of the highest (relatively speaking) in the
city.

I am quite fearful that many of our troop members were not so lucky. I think
many other units in the Southeast Louisiana, Istrouma, Pine Burr and other
Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama councils will simply cease to exist. Their
homes, their meeting places, their council camps: all gone. Camp Salmen, Camp
Ti'ak and others may never recover.

One of the merit badges I counsel is Emergency Preparedness. I am glad we had an
emergency plan. I work with the Red Cross as a volunteer. I have seen damage
like I see on the TV, up close and personal. But never this widespread, never at
places I recognize, even when covered with water.

My son and daughter may be out of school for 2 months, and we may not be able to
get to look at our home for 30 days. It is scary.

I have called the Greater Houston Chapter of the Red Cross, and offered to
volunteer where needed. We are sitting in the motel otherwise, and are going
crazy watching the water rise further and further.

My office is a block away from the major breach in the 17th Street Canal, that
failed for 3 city blocks. I am on the side of the canal that did not fail, so I
think my office is in no further current danger. But, if I can't get to the
office, I can't work. And most of my employees are in the areas of St. Bernard
Parish that appear to be totally destroyed.

As a young scout, I lived through Hurricane Betsy, and Hurricane Camille. I have
worked as a Red Cross disaster volunteer since 1970. This is beyond anything
that we have ever experienced, but NOT anything we didn't expect. We have known
for decades just how tenuous was our existance. But that knowledge was only
theoretical, never acutal.

We will need help. Your packs, troops, crews, ships and posts can help. How? I
am not sure. I can not even comprehend just what is happening at home. Think
about what you can do.

And please keep us in your prayers. A scout, is, above all, reverent.

The new Unit Money Earning application specifically says we cannot raise
money for other organizations (no matter how worthy). However, you could
conduct
an awareness campaign at your Chartered Organization, encouraging people to
contribute to one or more organizations, along with info on how to do so.

National has indicated they are checking with affected councils to see what
those councils may need in the future.

Thanks Leigh, this is JUST the kind of thing we were looking for, for our
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub scouts and Venture Crews!!

Visited the site, its got pictures and is very helpful, and in addition to
the flood bucket, it looks like the healthy families kit could be useful as well
to many in the area. If you get the items donated in your area (that it showed
would be provided by whatever that medical company was) to complete the kit, it
would have some pretty needed things.

I just received this email and thought I would pass it on to you guys. Please if
you can help, do so....As for someone who has been threw many hurricanes in the
last year, I can tell you, any help you can give is great. Also, if you can't
give supplies, money to the Red Cross is appreciated too. When I say every
little bit helps, I really do mean it. I am looking into seeing if we are able
to send clothing to the girls that have lost everything.

Onto the message I just received.

This is a cross post.. If troop are interested in assisting in the Relief
effort, I would recommend the following project. The UMCOR Relief Supply
Emergency Kits. Our troop will be making Flood buckets and will send them to the
LA area. We may make the health kit too...
To find out more try this website...or contact
http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.cfm or call SAGER BROWN AT. 1-800-814-8765.
Send completed kits to:

UMCOR Sager Brown Depot,
P.O. Box 850,
131 Sager Brown Road,
Baldwin, LA 70514-0850

( yes, i called any they are up and running) or contact your local United
methodist church. These supplies enable people to begin the overwhelming job of
cleaning up after a flood or hurricane. For flood buckets only, if the requested
sized item is not available, go down to the next available size. If nothing is
available in the requested or smaller size, put masking tape on the outside of
the bucket saying, "This bucket contains no _________."

5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
Bleach (two 1-quart or one 82 oz. bottle. Do not include bleach of
you are shipping the bucket through the US Postal Service, UPS or
FedEx)
5 scouring pads
7 Sponges
1 scrub brush
18 cleaning towels (reusable wipes)
Liquid laundry detergent (two 25 oz. or one 50 oz. bottle)
1 household cleaner, 12-16 oz. bottle
Disinfectant dish soap, 16-28 oz. bottle
50 clothes pins
Clothes line (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.)
5 dust masks
2 pair latex gloves
1 pair work gloves
24-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags, 33-45 gallon (remove roll from
box before placing in bucket)
1 Insect repellant spray, 6-14 oz. can (If aerosol, cans must have
protective caps. See special requirements below.*)
1 Air freshener, 8 or 9 oz. can (If aerosol, cans must have
protective caps. See special requirements below.*)
*Special requirements: Put all items in the plastic bucket and seal
lid. Please ensure that all cleansing agents are liquids (not
powder) and in plastic bottles. All aerosols or flammables: If
aerosols are included, do not send the bucket by US mail or
DHL/Airborne freight. Ship by UPS ground, FedEx ground, or truck.
Pack inside the bucket or strong outer boxes. Put the ORM-D mark on
the outside of any buckets or boxes containing these items. Get it
at http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/print/kits/orm-d.cfm. Copy and tape on
each bucket or box. Boxes cannot exceed 66 lbs. each.

This is a situation I find particularly annoying, as I was listening

to the news last night, and all these organization _want_ is money.

There are apparently 2 reasons for this:
1. Expense of transporting material donations.
2. The Money itself can buy more there, than the donations they
    would get.

My son just moved to another state, and when I was helping him move,

he showed me 2 large boxes of clothes he no longer needed. The are

all in good condition, and I would love to get them to one of these

groups. But no one here wants them. They were to be donated to
"someone".

Uh... Everything??

If there was a CSC in New Orleans, it's likely under water now.

Yup. You can wire money, and when the Red Cross or Salvation Army
goes to get food or water, their combined buying power is much
greater than the typical citizen shopping at Wal-Mart. I guarantee
it's cheaper to truck in loads of food from a distribution center
than it is for thousands or millions of Americans to send stuff UPS,
or take donations of goods to the local RC chapter and have them ship
it.

It's a matter of speed and efficiency, the biggest bang for the buck,
and that's what these folks really need right now.

If you feel you must do something locally other than collect funds,
here are some ideas:
1. Blood is always needed. Donate yours if you can.
2. Our council is making up flyers for Scouts to pass out to their
neighbors, informing them about the various organizations they can
donate to, and emphasizing that cash donations are the best way to
go. Do the same, and hand them out at the grocery store, the mall,
around your neighborhood. Inform people, and show them that Scouts
care and are being Helpful.
3. Volunteer with one of the relief organizations and help them
directly.
4. If you live in the area, open your home to one of the families
caught up in this tragedy. I can't imagine that living in the
Astrodome or a Super 8 is that great, and having a room with a bed
and a meal that didn't come out of a plastic bag would be a welcome
step towards normalcy, especially for the children.

What about the local Salvation Army? The items probably won't make it
to the storm ravaged areas, but there are people in this country who
go to bed every night without enough food in their bellies or clothes
on their backs, usually through no fault of their own and not because
it's their desire. It's easy to forget that there are tens, even
hundreds of thousands of people in this country that are victims of
the silent tragedies of poverty or recession or bad luck. It doesn't
make the news because it happens every day to a few people at a time.
But it is just as devastating to its victims.

YiS,
Sean

Actually, I've heard that the Council Services Center may have fared
better than you might be led to believe. My unofficial feeling is
that direct assistance should be made by individuals to the Jerry
Lewis Telethon (goes to the Salvation Army) or to the star-studded
relief effort being staged by Ellen Degeneres and Morgan Freeman,
but to do so would violate the BSA regulations. Making donations to
the United Way probably won't trickle down to the BSA anyway, but
could well help needy individuals. Besides, if we get serious, the
council will probably have some tough decisions about its future
viability given the priorities of survivors in the area. My
district's big training dates and the roundup for the fall were
fully ongoing at the time of the storm's impact with the city. At
least two of the three sites for district training are under water
at present and the future ability of several of our charter partners
to continue to offer their facilities (given the fact that they may
be toxic to the everyone's health after the waters recede) cannot be
understated.
On a positive note, it was good to hear from Mark Landry, our
Council's Training Chair, and to know that he and his family had
survived the fury of the storm.

Right Rick Got it in one!

You're a bit sharper or quicker than me on this one even though I
went through that very argument, and also the Female Scoutmasters one as
well.

It is not a violation of BSA regulations for an individual to make a
donation to either of these relief efforts. The BSA just asks that we
(as units) do not raise funds for other organizations.

Den Chief training syllabus (that includes Venturers)? Also, my Senior
District Executive (Russell Fruits, Thompson-Poudre District, Longs Peak

Per a conversation with the National Supply Division the number for the
latest syllabus is 34450C. I can't speak for the authorization of
Venturer Den Chiefs.

I have it in my hands, and can confirm that this supply number is the
one that includes references to Venturers. In fact, the subtitle is: A
course for Den Chiefs; Pack, District, and Council Trainers; Den
Leaders, Cubmasters; Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches and Venture Crew
Advisors.

Sorry I don't have it digitized.

Steven-

Hopefully you have received the electronic copy of the Den Chief Syllabus I
sent and were able to open it. It came from one of the savy folks here on
the training list. This has been one of those impossible items to get, at
least in my council. If you need it sent to your council as well, drop me a
line off-list. We are preparing for our first DCT of the year on Oct. 1.
We add back a lot of the fun stuff from the old syllabus like the midway and
have the scouts to as much hands-on as we can as opposed to the classroom
approach. We also make a lot of give-aways for the scouts like some of the
puzzles and games from the DC Handbook and give them a bag they can store
everything in. God luck on your upcoming training,

For the new OWL syllabus (I can't remember where I pulled it from, but thanks to
the kindly scouter who posted it!), click

http://jvcbsa.org/training/committee/Syllabi/Syllabi.htm

It will ask for a username and pw

jvctraining
bsatrainer2005

Since it's a "bin" item, and free to councils, I feel it's okay to share.

Our council did order and receive their copies (I don't know how many we
ordered/received, but I doubt it was more than 5 or 6).

My council will be implementing it in Spring 2006. We toyed with the idea of
using it this fall (October), but we have a new Course Director running the
course, and didn't feel it was fair to have them run it first. We're going to
put one of our more experienced Course Directors on it in the Spring (most
likely me).

I'm willing to share ideas/suggestions with anyone who is running it this Fall,
or plans to run in it in the Spring.

try here:
For the new OWL syllabus (I can't remember where I pulled it from, but
thanks to the kindly scouter who posted it!), click

http://jvcbsa.org/training/committee/Syllabi/Syllabi.htm

It will ask for a username and pw

bsatrainer2005

Since it's a "bin" item, and free to councils, I feel it's okay to share.

The above was copied from another email, but that site also has the
documents you are looking for....at least I think this is what you are
looking for.

Thank you,

Has anyone else tried to mesh the two schedules? Not only did they move items,
but they
also changed the length of some classes.

At least they ADDED time, from where, I'm not clear, but there's 30 minutes of
extra
instruction in the course.

Animal Identification and Packing/Hiking each get an extra 15 minutes.

Now that I've made THOSE adjustments, I'm off to type in the OWL schedule to see
how it
all fits together.

When I'm done, I'll post a PDF of my chart to the files area.
