Dear members and friends of the Scotland-China Association,

If you missed our Chinese music concert by Dong Yi in Glasgow last
April, this is another chance to listen to a 'zheng' (Chinese zither)
performance by a young prodigy player in Edinburgh this Saturday!

The following event is proposed by the French Institute in Edinburgh,
one of our Association's partners, and we thought it may be of
interest to you.

Best wishes,

Scotland-China Association

At just 20 years old, Dong Yi is already a new star rising among
zheng performers in China. Her performance is full of vigor and
enthusiasm, as well as delicacy, tact and profound charm. Yi has also
been a student at the University of Edinburgh since 2001 and she
performed in the 2002 Fringe festival, a concert to which the BBC
World Service dedicated a special programme.
'Zheng' is one of the oldest Chinese string instruments with a
century-old history, tuned using the Chinese pentatonic scale (sol,
la, do, re, mi). Dong Yi will perform with other musicians
traditional Chinese tunes.

See the formation of Communist China brought to life through a
private collection of masterpieces made between 1950 and 1976.
Powerful images made in traditional media, such as porcelain, lacquer
and ivory, illustrate the political idealism of the period of the
Cultural Revolution. These pieces are now extremely rare and their
value has been reassessed in China where painful memories of this
difficult period are receding.
Top master-craftsmen used the best materials with no restriction on
production time to produce perfect images of Mao's revolution. In
contrast, the striking posters on display were produced to propagate
the cult of Mao and his vision of New China.

Ms Yang is looking for Chinese couples who would be happy to answer
her questions, in strict confidentiality. You can contect her by e-

Dear member and friend,

You are warmly invited to take part in our Annual General Meeting on
Tuesday 29th April at the Garnethill Multicultural Centre Street on
21 Rose Street, Glasgow G3 6RB. Chinese tea and biscuits will be
served from 7pm. The AGM will start at 7.30pm sharp.

This will the opportunity to look back at the busy year we have had
in Glasgow and to start making plans for the year ahead. Our
Chairman, Treasurer and myself, the Secretary, will report to you on
the work we have carried out since our last AGM. There will also be
the election of a new committee. The agenda is set out below.

With our monthly Chinese corners and cultural meetings, as well as
our first `Overseas Chinese Film Season' held last autumn, we hope
our numerous activities have been of interest to you. We would
appreciate any suggestions you might have for our new programme.

The AGM should last no more than 30 minutes. Afterwards, we will have
the chance to listen to Miss Dong Yi, a promising performer of zheng
(Chinese zither). At just 20 years old, Yi is already a young star
rising in China. She has received formal music education from the age
of 7 and has learnt from several masters of her instrument in China.
Yi has already won national prizes, cut several CDs and recently
appeared in a pioneering music video on national television. She will
be accompanied by Mr Ip Kim-Ho, a composer, conductor, cellist and
Yang-Qin (Chinese dulcimer) performer, who will also introduce her
instrument.

This will be a rare opportunity to discover Chinese music with two
truly talented artists. We really look forward to seeing you.

Yours faithfully,

François Josserand

PS: We very much appreciate your support for the Association. If you
have not yet renewed your membership for this year, I have enclosed
an application form and hope you will continue with your support.

AGENDA

1. Apologies
2. Minutes of Previous meeting
3. Chairman's report
4. Secretary's report
5. Treasurer's report
6. Election of committee
7. Election of national committee representatives

E'. "Song of Mulberry", composed by Zhou Yanjia. (Shaanxi operas.)

Da Ji. (Dance & folk song of Zangzu, an ethnic minority group in
Western China).

Yi says, "the idea behind my recital is not only to let you
experience different musical tastes from different regions of China,
but also to showcase how the music was created and developed. I
called my recital `My Journey through China' because I chose 9 pieces
with distinctive local colours from 8 different areas of China. I
hope we can take a spiritual journey through China together on that
night."

Yi will be introduced by Kim-Ho, who will also present her instrument
and introduce each piece of music. In the second half of the recital,
he will accompany her with his cello for the two pieces he has
specially arranged for this recital.

Dear Friends and Members of the Scotland-China Association,

If you came to our 'Overseas Chinese Film Season' in Glasgow last
Autumn, you will probably recall "Foreign Moon" by Zhang Zeming. This
film portrayed the life of "Lan Lan", a Chinese immigrant to London.
You will also recall the rich and handsome husband that Lan Lan
eventually gets married to at the end of the movie!

Well, that character was played by our friend actor David Tse, who is
also the artistic director of Yellow Earth Theatre in London, an
international touring company formed by five british east asian
performers. Yellow Earth Tehatre produces high quality ensemble
physical performance using traditions of east and west, to explore
and celebrate cultural heritage and contemporary experience. (For
more information, see: http://www.yellowearth.org/)

David is now presenting a ground-breaking new series, "Beyond The
Takeaway", exploring the lives of second and third generation BBCs
(British Born Chinese) on BBC Radio 4 next week: Monday-Friday, 10-
14th March @ 3.45-4pm.

Time Out has listed it Radio Critic's Choice for next Monday! Best of
all, you will probably recognise many of the guests we invited for
our Film Season - including our Patron David Yip and Dimsum.co.uk
founder Sarah Yeh!

If you miss a programme, you can still listen to it on the web, seven
days after broadcasting, by clicking on the link below.

We hope you enjoy it and you spread the news to your friends!

Dearest members and friends of the Scotland-China Association,

We thought you may be interested in the forthcoming Season of
Contemporary Japanese Films co-organised by our good friends of the

Glasgow.

All four films are free and with English subtitles, so we have no
excuse for not going!

A Season of Contemporary Japanese Films

Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh and Europe-Japan Social
Science Research Centre, University of Glasgow, co-present A Season
of Contemporary Japanese Films at GilmorehillG12 (9 University
Avenue, Tel: 0141 330 5522) on Friday nights in March 2003 from 7.30
p.m. In Japanese with English subtitles. Free Admission (tickets
available 30 minutes prior to the screening)

Friday 7 March
"Summer Holiday Everyday" (PG) (1994) (94 mins)

Comedic critique of success. The film is adapted from a girls manga
(comic) by Yumiko OHSHIMA and directed by Shusuke Kaneko (1955-).
Sugina is an excellent pupil at an elite girls' school, living in
suburban Tokyo with her mother and her step-father who is on the
first track at an elite company. They appear to be a well-to-do
family, but Sugina stops going to school due to bullying and her
father quits the company. They try to re-build a family.

Friday 14 March
"Moving" (PG) (1993) (124 mins)

A girl's "journey of discovery and her arrival at the gates of
adulthood" (Mark Schilling). It is directed by Shinji SOMAI (1948-
2001) of "Ah Spring" screened at the last Season, known for his style
of one scene, one cut and long shots. Renko started her new life with
her mother when her father has left as a preliminary step for
divorce. Renko is at first happy because she now has two homes.
However, she soon finds it difficult to cope with a new situation,
and she plans a family trip to Lake Biwa, near Kyoto, with her
father, since they enjoyed it in the previous year...

Friday 21 March
"Don't Look Back" (PG) (1999) (74 mins)

A nostalgic, quirky exercise in the boyhood mischief in the tradition
of Truffaut. Its director, Akihiko SHIOTA (1961-), unlike other
Japanese directors, consulted many children to make it more relevant
to them. Akira and Kouichi, naughty boys living in the outskirts of
Tokyo, are placed in different classes in a new term. They thought it
a minor obstacle to their deep friendship, but each of them makes new
friends and finds it difficult to strike a balance between the old
and the new.

Friday 28 March
"Kikujiro" (12) (1999) (121 mins)

A boy's journey looking for his mother, with a middle-aged yakuza, is
directed by Takeshi KITANO (1947-) of Kids Return, Sonatine and Hana-
bi. Masao lost his father and is living with his grand mother in an
old Tokyo precinct of Asakusa. He gets bored with a summer holiday
and decides to find his mother whom he has not seen for a while. He
is accompanied by Kikujiro, a yakuza. A road movie full of Takeshi's
gags that made him the top comedian in Japan in the late 1970s.
