Dear Everyone
Below is an email from Frances Christiansen of the Confucius Institute,
wondering if any members have items they could loan to an exciting exhibition
about historic and modern Shanghai planned for early next year :
***********
Dear Scotland China Association
The Confucius Institute is planning a touring exhibition on Shanghai and the
2010 Expo to mark 2010 as the year of the Shanghai Expo. The exhibition is now
set to take place in Feb 2010.
We plan to offer other Confucius Institutes in the UK the opportunity to
borrow the exhibition which is planned to present four faces of Shanghai
over the last 90 years or so under the headings:
1. Shanghai Golden Era (Republican Period 10s-30s)
2. New China/Shanghai (Communist period, 50s-70s)
3. Reform and Opening (1980-2010)
4. Shanghai today - Expo
We have been quite lucky in sourcing images for the exhibition panels but
are keen to try and bring the exhibition to life with artefacts of each
period. We have already secured some clothing (Red Army uniforms etc) but if you
or any of your members have any reasonably sized display item that might help to
bring more variety to the exhibition could you let me know?
We would be able to display such items on a locked podium so they are
secure. If not, well sorry to have bothered you and many thanks for your time.
Best regards
Frances Christensen, General Manager

Hi again
Just a quick reminder of our next Glasgow event (this Tuesday, 16th December)
Ying, a research fellow at Strathclyde Business School, is a former SCA Glasgow
branch secretary and it should be an interesting event - -
"Joint Ventures, Identity and Trust" by Dr Ying Zhang
Tuesday 16th December 2008, 7.15 for 7.30pm
Garnethill Multicultural Centre
21 Rose Street, Glasgow G3 6RE
"Understanding business collaborations in China from identity and trust
perspectives"
Business collaboration, such as joint ventures and strategic alliances, has been
widely adopted by foreign investors in the Chinese market. Collaboration is
often regarded as a crucial strategic vehicle for organizational development.
Despite its popularity, there are still managerial dissatisfactions about the
performance of business collaboration. This presentation will delve into the
details of how business partners work together and to what extent their
interaction can lead to the satisfactory/unsatisfactory performance of business
collaboration.
This presentation is based upon a research project conducted by Dr Ying Zhang
from 2005 to 2006. Her research looks at how business collaborations are managed
across national boundaries. In particular, identity and trust issues are
explored to reveal the managing process. Three Sino-foreign business
collaborations were chosen for the in-depth investigation.
Dr Ying Zhang is now working as a research fellow at Strathclyde Business
School. Her main research area is on inter-organizational collaboration with
particular interests in the Chinese market. Ying obtained her MA degree in
international business from Newcastle University and PhD degree in management
from Strathclyde University. Before she came to the UK, she had two years
experience of working in a Sino-British brewery joint venture based in Jilin
China.
As you maybe know we have been having problems with the mailing list for the
last couple of months.
But if you receive this it means we are winning!
You may like to attend the following SCA events :

Dear members and friends,
Global Xchange youth volunteer project in Edinburgh - Host Homes needed
Edinburgh is playing host to an international youth volunteer exchange
between China and the UK this autumn through Global Xchange, a
partnership between VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) and the British
Council. So far over 70 exchanges have taken place between the UK and
overseas countries, which sees 18 young volunteers (aged 18-25) living
and working in communities in both host countries.
They are looking for homes with a spare room to accommodate a pair of
same-sex volunteers for all or part of this time (September 20 - early
December), in exchange for financial and professional support provided
by Global Xchange. In the past, host homes have found this a great
opportunity to learn more about a new culture and events happening
within their own community.
Global Xchange provides:
- a weekly allowance of 85 pounds to cover food costs
- volunteers who have gone through a selection process and training
- support and briefing from two programme supervisors
Volunteers are happy to cook and clean for themselves, and will be
arriving in Edinburgh on September 20th. They will leave for China in
the first week of December. Please get in touch if you are able to
help for even part of this time.
For further information please see www.globalxchange.org.uk and
contact Luke Rosier on 07968 094675 or luke.rosier@...

July 14-17

Director Sergei Bodrov has fulfilled a long-time dream in bringing the
story of one of the great rulers of the Mongol Dynasty to the screen.
The tale of how a young boy ascended to become legendary warrior
Genghis Khan centres Bodrov's epic of love and betrayal.

Nine-year-old Temudgin sets off with his father, a khan, to search for
a bride. Travelling across the region's stark and beautiful tundra,
Temudgin sees a girl whom he proclaims to be his wife, though his
choice runs counter to his father's wishes. But Temudgin's life
instantly changes when a group of Tartars poison his father. Even
though he is next in line to rule, the rest of the tribe refuses to
accept leadership from a young boy. They cast out his entire family,
forcing them to eke out a meagre existence.

An epic of courage and resourcefulness follows, as the boy becomes a
man, finds the girl whom he had chosen as his bride all those years
ago, and gradually reasserts his claim to the leadership of his
kingdom. This saga plays out against the stunning landscapes of
Central Asia, where tribal loyalties rule and violent warfare trumps
other means of resolving differences.
