Hope everyone's enjoying a Happy New Year!

Just wanted to pass along the address for my new blog. I know, I 'm not online nearly enough (ahem); I'm a member of a couple of group blogs like the 2012 debut Apocalypsies and the Will Write For Cake critique group, but wanted to set up a personal blog for things that wouldn't always fit with the theme of writing for kids & YA like we have on the group blogs. I'll post things about writing and books too, but there will be some other randomness included.

The new space is Making Stuff Up And Writing It Down; so far I have an introductory post, some videos I made about day job fun, and inventions I hope we'll see in the next decade. Stop by when you can!

Thanks!

Lynne

I think many of you will find the following article very interesting.............and I say it is about damn time.........all of those traditionalists with their noses in the air, are going to soon drown if they don't at least start taking the independent publisher seriously.........

But with that stigma slowly being eroded over the last few years, it is even more important that you do your research before you leap into publishing a book..........I have multiple handouts which I can email if you are interested which give you basics about both traditional and independent publishing, just send me an email at rita.mills@... and I will send them to you..........

I am also presenting with a traditional publisher January 15th and you will get a good cross-section of what the industry is from this presentation if you are in the Houston area.........here is a link to more info about the one-day workshop.........

I will be at the monthly meeting at the Tracy Gee at 6:00 for anyone wanting to discuss or ask questions about Self / Independent-Publishing. No question is too sensitive.  I have made myself available most or 2010 before the meetings and will continue in 2011, if there is an interest.

Most of you know, I have independently published with some success.  It is not for everyone, but there are advantages and disadvantages. My goal for these informal open-to-all meetings is to give you information without the hype and make sure you ask the right questions before you take the leap.

I have self published 15 books now and find the POD the most economical. I publish only in full color and to keep costs down limit my books to 100 page lengths. They cost me in lots of 50 a little over $5.00 each You can see the covers on my web site. I wish it wasn't so far. I would love to get your expertise.

charhjones
Send Email Send Email

The Women's Institute of Houston is offering several writing classes this
spring, so if you've made a New Year's Resolution to work on your craft, this is
the place (for men, too!).

Chris Rogers is once again offering a class on novel writing. The next session
will focus on:

Dialogue vs Narrative: Getting the Most Punch from Every Word in Your Novel

"Most writers gravitate toward storytelling tools that feel natural to them. If
you hear your characters holding conversations, you'll write more dialogue. If
you know a character's intimate thoughts and feelings, and want to express them,
you'll gravitate toward narrative. Narrative is also the most useful tool for
describing luscious colors and textures of a setting or blow-by-blow action.

Have you ever needed a Phillips-head screwdriver and all you could lay your
hands on was a kitchen knife? That crude tool was clumsy, at best, and probably
didn't work the magic you hoped it would. The same is true when we use the
storytelling tools of Dialogue and Narrative without consideration of which
would work best in a particular situation. The magic rarely happens. This class
will guide you in choosing the best storytelling tool for the job."

In addition to novel-writing, there will also be a class on Personal Essay
offered by the best-selling author Emily Fox Gordon and a Memoir class offered
by Susan Briggs Wright. Chris Woods also offers a general creative writing
class, but I believe it is already filled.

You can sign up online at www.wih.org or by calling 713-529-7123. Email me
offline if you have any questions.

The welcome post is up on kidlitart.blogspot.com! The Challenge details have
been explained and the general schedule of check-ins and posts is up as well. Be
sure to read it thoroughly if you've never done a dummy before, or this is your
first time making one.

http://kidlitart.blogspot.com/2011/01/its-here.html

If you're interested in participating in the live tweetchat (you need a Twitter
account to participate) the hashtag is #kidlitart. It's on Thursday night at
8PM, and I recommend using tweetchat or tweetdeck.

And illustrators, if you'd like, we can take advantage of the pre-meeting
critiques to share our dummies in progress and do a little feedback session. If
you are having problems, and don't have the time (or ability) to participate in
the challenge online, that's fine! Meet with me before the meeting and we can
talk about what you're working on.

Considering the timing of this, Lynne's Intro to Twitter talk couldn't have come
sooner! :)

I also  took one of Dana’s cards. She wrote down the name of the PR person who schedules book signings for that store. She is Lillian Reitz. The phone number I have is the same as Dana’s (281-631-0861). Unfortunately, I do not have an email.

I think it would be a good idea to try to schedule a “local authors” signing, a combination of fiction and nonfiction authors. I have a book coming up in March, THE IRON BUTTERFLY, you probably remember the poster I brought last night. I am interested in promoting my book, so if you are also interested in promoting yours, email me your name, contact info, and book (s) title (s) and I will prepare a list and send it to Lillian with a proposal of readings and/or simple activities and see what she says. What do you think? Any suggestions? Dates that would work for you?

Let’s begin 2011 with a BANG!

Ana Marie,

This is a great idea. I know a number of us really enjoyed the super library event that Marianne Dyson set up in Seabrook last fall.

As for bookstore signings, about ten years ago the events coordinator at the Westheimer B&N set up local author signings around Christmas time, and Borders at Westheimer/Gessner had times when they invited teachers to see our books. I've heard of nothing like that lately, but I may just be out of the loop.

If I understood Dana last night, there are two requirements for handling our books. One, they must be returnable, and, two, they have to be available through Ingrams. Neither of these is a problem when the books are published by a traditional publisher. From my experience several years ago, Ingrams expects deep discounts, and my Colophon House books are not available through them. Enslow books would be. Maybe we need to push for a signing at her store...and elsewhere...since you and I have nonfiction books shelved at the back of the store!

I didn't hear Ingram's, but that could be so by now.  Used to be Baker & Taylor was one of the approved wholesaler.  I think we would need to clarify that.  I have never had an account with Ingram and my books were ordered.  I had B&T, Follett and BroDart, plus other smaller ones who solicited my books.

Pam,

Maybe that was an off-to-top-of-her-head response to name Ingrams as supplier. Surely they order from other jobbers.

Follett is my biggest customer because they focus on school libraries. Brodart somehow found me again this past week after a year or so of silence. When I got the latest B&T order about 4 months ago, I called accounting to find out why it took 8 months for them to pay their last invoice, saying I needed some assurance I would get paid sooner. They referred me to my account rep, who...guess what...referred me to accounting. I didn't fill the order. It was only one book, and I don't need that grief.

Hope you have better luck.

Don't know about y'all, but Dana's insight into the ins and outs of big box book retailers really made my head spin. Hope springs eternal, though, and I'm excited she's open to promoting local authors, aren't you? I snagged a business card from her at the meeting, but realize this a.m. it only has the 1960 store manager on it and no email. Anyone get Dana's email? Or one for the PR person she talked about? I scribbled "Lilian Reese" is the go-to for author visits but have no clue if that's right. Anybody write faster than me and got a contact email? THANKS! C:

She definitely mentioned Ingrams, but she also mentioned another which I don't remember.

I got around part of that by them paying my shipping and set a minimum order if they wanted their 55%.  Any orders less than 5 and they got a 45% discount and they agreed to all of it.  Try to negotiate with them.

Mary

Partners Distributors is another on B&N's "approved" list, and they will work with small/independent presses.
That was my route "in."

Hi all,

For any of you thinking of going to conferences to meet agents, I've put a list on my blog today of agents who will be attending conferences throughout the U.S. from now until early July.
