Hi all,
I just received this info from the North Texas chapter and wanted to
pass it on.
And remember, if you haven't signed up for our Editors Day on February
21, there is still time. We have spaces open, but in the past we have
always sold out.

Well, at least this year their conference speakers aren't strictly authors and
illustrators.

That conference is for authors of adult materials. Personally, I've never
heard of any of the authors or editors they have lined up. It's not the same as
the SCBWI-North Central Chapter conference that some of us attend.

Hi Mary,

I have two different email addresses for Yvonne. I think the current one is

will work if you haven't tried them yet.

I am just amazed how many Christmas cards I received from folks who
believe an apostrophe makes a noun plural.

For example...The Baker's wish you Happy Holidays.

Merry Christmas from the Brown's...

Of course none of these cards came from writers.

Hi all,
Doris Fisher passed on some news about one of our long-time members,
Merle Petersen. Merle is in the hospital in ICU recovering from surgery.
If any of you who know Merle would like to mail her a card, her address is:
Merle Petersen

Doris feels that cards are welcome, but please, no phone calls to her or

Let's keep Merle in our thoughts and pray that she recovers soon.

Hi, I'm starting a Community Story on my blog, something I think will
be fun. Basically, the idea is to have a running story that readers
can add to whenever they'd like. So, it's something that's written by
all of us, and it will be interesting to see where it goes.

It's not for publication outside of my blog, but could be a fun thing
to read and join in whenever you need a writing break or to get your
creative juices revved.

In December, some readers posted ideas for the first
sentence/paragraph of the story, and I posted them yesterday for
readers to vote on their favorite. The post is here:
http://daybydaywriter.wordpress.com/2009/01/06/vote-for-the-community-
story/

Next week, we'll start the Community Story with the beginning that
gets the most votes.

If you think it sounds fun, feel free to pop by and vote for the
story start, and continue to add to the Community Story as it moves
along.

Greetings, friends, fans, and former participants of the North Texas Book
Festival! Happy New Year!

*WHOOSH* What was that? That was 2008, mate. Seems like only yesterday that we
were gathering at the Center for Visual Arts in Denton, enjoying the company of
authors and the book lovers who make the work worthwhile. Now, it seems like
only tomorrow before we're doing it all again! Mark your calendar for the
following dates: April 17-18, 2009--same Bat-times, same Bat-venue. In spite of
the economic recession, we've held the prices at 2007 level, so make it a part
of your Spring fun to join us. Registration forms are available on the website,
www.ntbf.org .

When you visit the website, you'll note that our featured authors this year are
the incomparable dean of Western novelists, Elmer Kelton, back by popular
demand, and "The String Man," David Titus, who tells stories in string as well
as in words. You won't want to miss them speaking at the Book Trails Dinner on
the evening of April 17, along with our trusty "closer," Rose-Mary Rumbley. They
will be on hand at the Book Festival the following day for further sharing of
thoughts and ideas about writing and publishing.

Good News! We have extended the deadline for submissions for the North Texas
Book Festival Book Award until January 20. If you meant to submit before year's
end and got caught up in real life and/or the holidays, now's your chance! But
that is absolutely the last date we can accept submissions in order to get them
all a fair reading. See www.ntbf.org for the rules and registration form.
Imagine Governator Schwarzenegger saying, "Do it! Do it NAOW!"

Speaking of deadlines, let us know you're coming as a participant by March 15 in
order to get your name and book titles in the program. Don't be shy about
signing up to do a presentation, either! You can register to participate
anytime, even up till the day itself, but we need a little time to put together
the very nice program you've come to expect, so after March 15 we can't
guarantee that you'll be listed.

Give me a few days to get my ducks in a row, and I'll have some downloadable
flyers on the website for you to use to promote the Book Festival in your
hometown, school, business, etc.! I may be slow, but I'm pokey, so keep watching
for me to dust the cobwebs off the site real soon!

Looking forward to another great festival--I hope to see you there!

VOICES CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARDS

FRANCES LINCOLN DIVERSE VOICES CHILDREN'S BOOK AWARDS
<http://www.sevenstories.org.uk/diversevoicesaward/>http://www.sevenstories.org.\
uk/diversevoicesaward/
NO ENTRY FEE
For a manuscript that celebrates cultural diversity in the widest possible
sense, either in terms of its story or in terms of the ethnic and cultural
origins of its author. The prize of £1,500, plus the option for Frances
Lincoln Children's Books to publish the novel, will be awarded to the best
work of unpublished fiction for 8–to-12-year-olds by a writer, aged 16
years or over, who has not previously published a novel for children. The
work must be written in English and it must be a minimum of 10,000 words
and a maximum of 30,000 words. The closing date for all entries is January
30, 2009.

NOTE: My blog reaches the world, but many Americans avoid submitting to
international markets (and vice versa). I could find no entry fee on this
one, and the prize is remarkable, so don't let an ocean interfere with
entering. Also worth mentioning is the fact they are interested in
submissions from 16-17 year olds in addition to adults.

DOUBLE NOTE: Out of four agents reading the manuscript, one just replied
that he was not interested. Sigh. Bummer. I liked his agency, too. He
represents a favorite author of mine whom I have corresponded with off and
on. Blast. So I keep on with book two, and on my list of goals for 2009 is
an outline in February for book three. One day, someone will get his/her
hands on this series and go "WOW - she's got several of them written. I can
pitch them as a group!" And I'll just nod all wise and everything.

Nelson, I don't believe there is a fee to enter the Diverse Children's Book
Award.........if you enter the ABC's book competition, there is a $55 to
enter, but if you win that $55 gets you a royalty based publishing contract
and books to sell........Rita

Hi, Merle,
Who but an English language specialist would change colon into semicolon? I'm
so glad you're back home again and hope that you just get better and better.

Hi all,

1. Another reminder to all SCBWI published authors and illustrators
meeting the PAL membership criteria who are interested in school visits.
The Texas Library Association (TLA) is being held in Houston this year.
TLA is often cited (and rarely disputed as) the best state show in all
of the US. It lives up the adage “everything is big in Texas”.
Attendance is consistently over 7,000 librarians and exhibitors. This
show attracts all types of librarians but with the primary mix being
from school and public libraries. TLA offers unparalleled exposure and
opportunities to market your books and services to the library community.
Where else can you get your information in front of thousands of
librarians for only $40? If your goal is to book school visits and
speaking engagements you can't afford not to be in this year's Speakers
Guide.
We were able to get an incredible deal on the printing. The guide will
be on slick paper, full color, 8 1/2" by 11". Each author/illustrator
will have a half page with their info, a photo and one of their book
covers featured. This format was used several years ago by a group of
Houston authors and illustrators to distribute at TLA. It received good
response and resulted not only in school visits for the participants,
but also in a booking for one of the listed authors to speak at a TLA
workshop.
Details are on our site www.scbwi-houston.org Deadline to participate is
February 21, 2009.

2. I received the below message and was asked to pass it onto our
members. Contact Jill King at jilllouise@... if you are interested.
We are looking or an author or storyteller to come to our school in
Brenham Texas March 9th or March 11. We are studying the Oregon Trail
that week.

Happy writing to all !
Vicki
