Wanted to let everyone know I've updated my website and have an ongoing
book contest. Every month I'll give one of my books in paperback to the
winner. Would love for you to tell friends, relatives, teachers,
librarians, and enter yourself!

Also, on the website www.tippytales.com, I now have 8 books online.
This is a subscription site for children that is excellent. I've had
fun writing for them and continue to do so. You can see an icon from
each book by not subscribing, but not the author's name. If you'd like
to know which ones I wrote, send me an email and I'll list them.

I had 13 powerless days and am so happy to be "plugged in" again. We
had no damage, thank goodness. But it was hot and mighty dark!

I'M BACK! After two weeks of no internet I feel like I have been
abandoned on an deserted island. My house was the only one in the
family with air conditioning so at night we had wall-to-wall sleep-
overs. No TV, no computer. After removing a tree from the second
story, cleaning up our gazebo and spa, we are in the middle of
reconstruction and roofing. Best of all children and dogs have gotten
their A/C back and the house is emptying out.
We are fine and when I talk to my friends in Galveston, I can't
complain about a thing. Thanks for asking.

Wanting no confusion, let me say the books I am giving away in my book
contest on my website are not SCBWI door prizes from the stash.

They are paperbacks I've bought of my own books from Sylvan Dell.

Hi all,

I am writing an article on new books for a possible publication in a local
Houston magazine. I am looking for local authors and illustrators who have
relatively "new" Winter holiday books out. Please email me off list with
your title and pub info!

Thank you,

To All Houston-SCBWI Published Authors & Illustrators:

I am now collecting names of people who want to participate in the
SCBWI-Houston Booth during the 2009 Texas Library Association Conference:

WHERE: Houston, TX -- George Brown Convention Center
DATE: March 31 through April 3, 2008
WHO ATTENDS: 8,000 or more Texas librarians plus hundreds of authors,
illustrators, publishers and vendors

TLA is a great way for authors/illustrators to get word about their books and
school visits to Texas librarians. There is nothing like a personal
face-to-face meeting with a librarian to make her remember you. Every Texas
author/illustrator should attend at least one TLA Conference in his/her career.
It's a
blast meeting other authors, librarians, publishers reps and an occasional
editor. If you have never attended TLA, then 2009 is the prefect opportunity to
do so. Since TLA convention locations rotate, it will be several years before
it is in Houston again.

So....please contact me if you want to participate at the Houston SCBWI
Booth. The first half of the payment has already been made. The second half is
due in November, so I need to know ASAP. Your cost will depend on how many sign
up -- the more the merrier.

Contact me privately at: _ReadGarland@..._ (mailto:ReadGarland@...)

CONTACT ME BY: OCTOBER 15, 2008

Thanks!

Hi Sheila--

Didn't someone once say "The only stupid question is the one unasked?"

Anyway, to participate in the SCBWI booth you do have to be published.
Participants are paying for the right to display their books, hand out their
promotional materials, sell books & autograph books.

However, as for TLA itself, anyone can visit the Exhibitor's Hall where all the
booths are set up. You do not have to be a librarian or vendor. All you have
to do is go to the registration area and pay for an Exhibit Hall pass (about
$20). The pass allows you to get inside the Exhibit Hall, but does not give you
access to any of the conference workshops, dinners, parties, etc.

Hope you get to attend. The TLA experience, in my opinion, is well worth the
$20 for the exhibit hall pass.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best,
Sherry Garland

I'm very glad that you were able to come and meet with us last night.  SCBWI

As for contacting Bobby, the program last night was a special one night
only community service.  So sorry, but you'll need to contact a lawyer or your
own tax person for further information.  He only consults with a clientele of
100 clients at a time, one has to leave before he'll take on another for
whatever the reason.

Aileen,
Thanks for the info on Bobby. I've been reading online about S Corps.
and need to get more information than he gave or the online folks give.
I am a retired Presbyterian minister and still receive income from
pulpit supply and hope to get an Interim Pastor position (where I lead
the church while they are searching for a new pastor.) After hearing
Bobby's presentation last night I got to thinking that it might be
advantageous to fold all of that under one S Corp umbrella. Ministers
have a peculiar tax situation with their housing, so I will need to find
someone who is familiar with that.
We enjoyed last night and plan to come regularly as I work into this new
role of wannabe author.

As some of you know, I've been working for National Geographic School
Publishing since May on a physical science series. I was hired to work on
the science in the books for grades 1 and 2 and appear in the DVDs as their
featured "explorer." Because of some reorganization at their end, six months
had gone by and I still didn't have a contract. My editor suggested I kick
it up a level to shake it loose. So I sent a note to the editorial VP
explaining the situation, who forwarded it to the product development VP,
who called me the same day. He said they were all very pleased with my work
and asked if I would like to expand my services to the whole K-5 series
during the next two years. He offered me three times more money than I had
expected, threw in a signing bonus, and added an optional clause that could
net me 8 paid school visits. Needless to say, I said yes!

The first books will be coming out next year. Though they call me the
author, I am not writing these books. I am basically their science editor,
the "role model" whose bio and photo is included in the books, and their
"talent" for the DVDs. I do not get any royalties for these books--but in
addition to the generous flat fee they offered, I will be paid to attend a
sales meeting and then appear at conferences and schools to promote the
books.

I love working for National Geographic!

PS Any other authors presenting at the Sally Ride Festival at Rice on the
18th? Peggy Whitson is the keynoter--the first female space station
commander and current US duration record holder. What a great role model for
the girls! If you want your daughter (grades 5 to 8) to attend, tickets are
still available. It is $20 and includes lunch and 2 workshops. Go to
www.sallyridescience.com/festivals.

Sheila,

You do not have to published to volunteer. If you're interested in
volunteering for TLA, send me an email off-list, and I'll get the
details of how you'd like to participate, when you think you could
attend, etc.

It's really early in the planning process, so we're still at the
brainstorming stage. Any new ideas would be welcome. :)

Sherry is talking about the Houston booth. You have to be published to work it.

Go to

I shared this at the meeting Monday night, but want to shout it out to everyone.
Vicki and I found out last week that GRANDPA FOR SALE made the Indiana State
Reading List for 2009-2010.

And I also found out last week that MAN IN THE MOON got a nice review in the
Aug/Sept issue of Discovery Girls.

It was a good week. :-)

Those of you who remember Australian Jen McVeity and the wonderful
presentations she did for us will want to know that her husband died suddenly
while
out jogging. Doctors think perhaps it was deep vein thrombosis since he had
just had a checkup but had flown home from eastern U.S. just a couple of weeks
previous. I know it's a 16-hour flight from the West Coast, but I'm not sure
about the flight he was on.

If you'd like to contact her -- _jenmcveity@..._
