Explore mystical realms, meet tricksters and heroes, and learn how to turn
the world's rich treasure of folklore and myth into stories and books that
sell.
Almost every children's magazine and book company publishes retellings. In
fact, because they combine the sharing of other cultures with the sharing of
universal truths, they've become a staple in children's literature. Parents
and grandparents love to read them. Teachers and librarians love to introduce
them to students. And kids love to enjoy them on their own.
You may not know it, but many authors enter the children's literature field
with retellings. And many of the best writers mine the gemstones of myth and
folklore for their most successful books. A number of award-winning authors
have forged impressive careers by grounding their work in folklore and myth.
Books such as Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted (Cinderella), Donna Jo
Napoli's Zel (Rapunzel), and Nancy Farmer's Newbery honor book Sea of Trolls
(Norse myth) represent some of the best works in this genre. Successful picture
book authors such as Robert Sans Souci, Aaron Shepard, and John Steptoe have
also delved into the treasure trove of myth for work such as The Talking Eggs
(Southern folktale), The Sea King's Daughter (Russian legend), and Mufaro's
Beautiful Daughters (African folktale).
With sixty books in print—ten of those collections of folklore and myth—
professional writer, editor, and folklorist Josepha Sherman is the perfect
mentor to guide you toward producing successful retellings. Josepha has taught
writing and folklore at conferences and workshops across North America. From
April 3—6, Josepha will be sharing her wealth of knowledge with an intimate
group of writers in the inspiring setting of the home of the Founders of
Highlights for Children.

You may have heard that the pesky first class stamp rate is going up in the
spring. Well if you didn't load up on forever stamps, and still have some 41
cent ones lying around, this is the perfect time to use them up by sending out a
few fat submissions (or several skinny ones, if you prefer). Go for it! Don't
make yourself get those 1 cent stamps later.

I got a call from McDougal Littell, a division of Houghton Mifflin, last
week asking for the rights to use an excerpt from Space Station Science and
offering a hefty fee because they plan to print 500,000 copies! I also got
word from my second edition publisher, Windward, that the Korean edition is
finally out (which I will be able to buy and resell to my Korean friends),
and that a special school printing requested by Harcourt came out in
January, and the Spanish edition by Harcourt will be out next January--all
of these reprint deals adding up to several thousand dollars in income for
me and Windward.

This is an extra reason to write nonfiction books and hang onto your reprint
rights--nonfiction continues to earn money ten years after initial
publication!

Love those reprints :)

See you all at the conference Saturday. (I was hoping to have some copies of
"my" magazine for show and tell, but they are unfortunately still at the
printers.)

Don't worry, Susan, there's another review somewhere
that says its WONDERFUL!

That's what happened with Pat Miller and I on our
Collaborative Bridges series. School Library Journal
gave it a mediocre review, while the professional
journal, Teacher Librarian, gave it a very good
review. SLJ doesn't require the high standards for
reviewers that Teacher Librarian did though SLJ gets
far more circulation. Therefore I don't rely on
reviews in SLJ.

With the caliber of writing that you do, it's worthy
of a quality review so phooey on Pub. Weekly.

Write on!

That's great, Dotti! Congrats. All of your many hours of writing and
promoting are getting rewarded. Plus you actually got a phone call and not
an email. Now that's amazing!

Doris

I just got a call from an account rep at Pelican Publishing. He told me that
he just sold 1500 copies of my new picture book, The Fat Stock Stampede at
the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to a distributor who is putting copies
in the grocery stores and airport here in Houston. I've never had my books
for sale at the airport before. Cool!

Hi everyone..........I have resumed the TBC Newsletter, and below are some
highlights of the info in the last issue........for the most part it
focuses on information for the writing & publishing community in
Texas.........if you would like to be added, please email me at the new
email address below........

rita.mills@...

1. On the heels of the big SCBWI conference in NY, the buzz on a couple of
lists is that independent publishing is looking more attractive as the
picture book market gets smaller and smaller........in that light you may
be interested in the deadline for the ABC's Children's Picture Book
Competition on February 29, 2008.........

http://www.abcbookcompetition.org

2. And on that same note, Dan Poynter, the foremost authority on the book
publishing industry, is coming to Houston for a one-day, information packed
workshop April 19th........here is a link to more information.......

http://www.geocities.com/michelelea0707/Poynter1.jpg

3. The National Black Book Festival is back in Houston May 17-18 for the
3rd or 4th year and some of you may be interested in more
information........this event has grown by leaps and bounds in that short
amount of time........check it out........

If you have any questions about any of these opportunities and the links
don't answer your questions, please feel free to email me.......Rita

Hello all,
I've set up an interactive literature and comprehension exercise for children on
my blog. It's young middle-gradish. I think advanced 1st and 2nd graders can do
it, as can 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.

The idea is that I'll write the chapters, but the story will develop based on
the answers the kids provide in the comments to each chapter.

Check it out - it's the featured post on my blog: http://trystyng.com

If you know of any kids who might be interested in this exercise, please do
point them or their grownups to this.

Thanks,
Tayyba
