Our speaker Gail Giles lives in the Woodlands and is not a big driver. My
escort for her had to cancel and I need someone in that area to volunteer to
drive her to and from the meeting on Monday. Worst case scenario, I will go
there from Kingwood and pick her up; however, I am hoping some poor soul will
have pity on me!

If you live in that area and can give her a ride, please email me!

Guidance please.

Looking for regional wisdom on purchase of new lap top computer best suited
for writers. Extra suggestions about effective configuration (processor, HD,
RAM, etc), software, and other add-ons would be greatly appreciated.

My old lap top reached the stage of "not worth the cost to repair" and has met
a much forestalled demise. Consumer Reports and websites have provided lots of
information, but a writer's computer savvy would be worth much more at this
point.

   Many thanks,

Claudette,

Our speaker last night talked about how much she loved her Mac, but I live
with a husband who uses only PCs, so that is what we have. We have Windows XP
on desktops and laptops. He keeps some graphic packages on his computer but
that's not important to me. If you like to do graphics, then a Mac is much
better. I know illustrators usually won't touch a PC.

Far more important to me as an author is the word processing package. The
best program in my opinion is Word Perfect. It is a dream to use. However, the
world of Bill Gates being what it is, Microsoft has gobbled the market to the
extent that some publishers require Word documents. I can convert from Word
Perfect, but if the manuscripts are short, I go ahead and use Word. However, I
defy anyone to get instruction codes out of a document once you have put it
in. I hate the way they think they know what I'm going to type -- I spend an
inordinate amount of time backing out capitals and indentions I do not want.
In Word Perfect, it is simply a matter of turning on Reveal Codes and
backing out a command.

that's my rant for today.

Good luck. I hope someone else chimes in with better information for you

Hello all,

You asked a question that I would love to contribute to.

I like what you said Mary, but while it is true the "old school"
illustrators loved only their MACs the latest illustration programs work for
both MAC and the PC. So the bottom line with choosing a computer is a matter
of personal opinion for illustrators as well. I've worked on both MACs and
PCs. I have a PC because I'm cheap and love repurchasing a new computer ever
so often. And there is a way to turn on the reveal codes with Word, but I
won't go into that here. I've heard about Word Perfect and other word
processing programs. Unfortunately, Word has become so universal it is hard
to get around it.

In answer to what kind of laptop to get, Claudette, there are so many
options. Dell and Toshiba used to be the most affordable BEST but now I hear
that HP is a strong contender. So there you have it.

In my opinion - it is NOT a good time to switch to VISTA. (The new operation
system that replaced Windows XP.) There are too many negatives. Namely, when
you try to add your old programs to your new computer with VISTA - they are
incompatible. So if I were you, I'd go online and purchase my new laptop
with the company, Dell, HP, or Toshiba and insist on Windows XP. You can't
purchase a computer in the store that doesn't have VISTA, you have to
purchase online and usually through the "business" instead of "personal"
computer dept.

You have to be suspicious of anything that is a "free upgrade" as VISTA has
become. I'm all for "free" but I realize that in this instance the "free"
comes with a huge price - incompatability, a slow response time, a computer
that argues with itself. You just don't need that kind of aggravation while
you are writing.

That's my three cents for all its worth. That and $3.95 will get you a large
caramel machiato.

Deb,

I'm responding on both our lists because this question was asked at the
meeting Monday night.

I spoke to Rue a month ago when I went by her office in Albany on our way to
visit Harold's 100-year-old mother in Snyder. At that time, I told her to
scratch my submission, that I needed to think in another direction.

Today I had a call from Rue on another matter, and I will speak with her at
length tomorrow after she gets here to Houston. I will ask again about
everyone's submissions.

Laura Morgan has responded to several people, but apparently not to others.
So far as I know, no one has heard from Judy O'Malley, and I've heard only two
people speak of responses from Sarah/HarperCollins. At least with
Susan/Chronicle, we know where we stand -- rejections, rejections, rejections.

Just to let everyone know, I have contacted Laura, Judy, and Sarah asking
for response time.

And my two cents:
I always loved my Mac, but began to find that of the various publications that
allowed e-mail submissions, and the number was growing, most wanted PC Word
attachments. So I bit the bullet and went that route. Last year, my husband
bought me a Toshiba lap top that I absolutely LOVE and it has re-writable CD's
too, so I back up and re-back up all on the same CD and carry it anywhere. I
really like it.

SARAH SEVIER:

Hi Mary,
I've actually had a chance to respond to nearly all of the submissions over
the last couple months—I have a pile of about 15 left, and I know I owe those
writers many apologies for holding on to their work for so long. I’ll be bac
k in touch with that last group in the next week or so. It was poor planning
on my part, but I attended two conferences within just a couple weeks of each
other and then was just swamped with submissions this spring. I really
appreciate your patience!
I hope all is well with you.
Best wishes,
Sarah

JUDY O'MALLEY:
Hi, Mary:
Hope you get some relief from that scorching heat—or just come up to Boston
where it’s beautiful and in the 70s today (though that good weather is
following a very rainy spell last week.
I’m sorry for the confusion, and for my slowness in getting through the 100+
mss you shipped after my visit. Please let the members know that I am
trying to work through them—though I necessarily have to do that around
dozens of
mss from my Charlesbridge authors and freelance clients each week. But, I
would never expect the SCBWI writers to refrain from sending their work
elsewhere. In fact, in this type of situation, in which I haven’t actually
requested to see the specific manuscripts, I don’t feel exclusive submission
is
really appropriate.
And, of course, I’ll keep mining for those gems and hope that another
publisher doesn’t beat me to the mother lode!
All best,
Judy

I gave up my desktop two years ago and switched to using a Dell Inspiron laptop
both at home and when I'm mobile. I use a docking station on my desk at home so
internet, mouse, printer, etc. all stay plugged in and all I have to do is
unhook one cable from my laptop to go mobile. I absolutely love my Dell and
have nothing but good things to say about the support they've given me. I
ordered it online from Dell.com, but visited their kiosk at the Galleria to look
over all the models before I ordered. I took it right out of the box, set up,
and went to work and haven't had one down day. I use Windows XP Professional
version. I did listen to advice from my daughter and her friends and paid extra
to upgrade my memory - this keeps everything running very quickly when I use the
internet or multiple programs. And while I too love Wordperfect, I bowed to the
inevitable and switched to Word and have learned to love that too.

One thing to know - if you have an education connection (and writing for kids
qualifies, IMO), then you can buy the student/teacher version of Microsoft
Office for much cheaper from Amazon.com or Best Buy and put it on your computer
yourself. I was working for PISD when I bought mine, but I think writing for
kids, especially nonfiction, gives you the education right as well.

Dear Houston SCBWI members,

After a long absence I am ready for a more
active membership.

My beloved husband, Stephen, of fifty-five years, died November 2, 2006.
As many of you know, Steve was sick and disabled for
years. I'll never regret keeping him home. Our last few years together
hold memories as precious as any in our marriage.

Since November I've visited with family and friends in Charleston, SC,
Chattanooga, TN Jackson, Greenwood and Pelahatchie, Ms. (Crooked Creek
for writers interested). Our three children, all Texans, live in
Greenville, Pflugerville, and Zephyr. I've spent time in
their homes enjoying all seven grandchildren.

During May I had a health scare that landed
me at MDAnderson, cardiologist, etc. The
good news, no cancer, healthy heart, etc.
I am git to go. There is no place better
than home, Houston! My plans are to
stay in my home of 19 years.

During the last month I've received several
calls re: Copperfield Critique listed on internet.
I am ready to activate membership in SCWBI and the critique group for
those interested. My thought is to begin meetings in my home, day
and/or night, at convenience of those interested.

We were meeting in Copperfield Community Center afternoons only. A
deposit has to be made to meet at CCC. I live off Hwy 6, Longenbaugh
area, in Southdown. My house is near and as convenient as CCC.

My address is:
7823 Green Devon, telephone 281-859-4208.
Directions are Longenbaugh, take right on second street to right that is
Pine Falls, turn right on Pine Falls, go one block, turn left on
Sweetwater Creek, only 1/2 block on Sweetwater Creek, turn left on
Green Devon, second house on right. Easy come, easy go!
I am footloose and fancy free and don't know
what to do with me! Copperfield Critique was a joy. Let's activate
the group again!

Best Wishes to All! Martha Roddy

I talked to Rue Judd today. She said her committee would be meeting on
Thursday and all of us should heard from her within a week or two.

May there be many happy faces when we hear!

Hello all and happy summer! I wanted to give everyone plenty of time to come
up with amazing articles to submit for the newsletter (out June 30). Summer is
starting and I know we are all busy. That being said, I need articles! They
don't have to be super long - 200-400 words is perfect (the shorter the better).
Please make sure they are relevant to children's writing.

You may email your submissions to me offline at susankmitchell@... . I
need the articles by June 25th to be considered. Remember, this is YOUR
newsletter. The first online edition was superb. Let's go 2 for 2.

You may also email any photos or art that you would like included. Please save
and send them as a jpg file. Also, please send any breaking news, book reviews,
signing announcements, etc. to be included.

   Thanks!
   Susan K. Mitchell

Martha,

You have to join SCBWI through the main organization in California. I think
the annual membership is about $75. Go to _www.scbwi.org_
(http://www.scbwi.org) and click on membership. The forms are there for you to
print.

Rita -

I can meet almost anytime with members
who'd like to participate. I have one meeting
2nd Thursday nights, Bible study Wed. mornings. Other than that my
hours
are flexible.

My house isn't
far off Hwy. 6 and Longenbaugh. Longenbaugh Drive runs from 6 to Fry
Road now. I'd love for critique group (s) to meet here, afternoons or
nights. Mornings OK, too.

I found some prefer daytime while children
are in school, those who work like nights,
of course.

Hope we can get a group going.

Martha

HI Carmen,

My associate membership in the national SCWBI is up to date.
California SCWBI office sends out out dues notice first of every year.
I
paid 2007 dues. Is that all that is necessary?

I'm beginning to get with the writing. Two poems were returned.
Rejects! These proved to be water off an old duck's back. I'm
paddling along pullng out old manuscripts, contemplating new.

My daughter Ruthie started this spreading after this Sandi V. refused to
apologize for plagiarizing my artwork and 'selling' it as her own.

Wayne--

Whatever you were trying to send didn't get through. This listserv won't let
you do attachments. Maybe you could summarize what happened for us.

Sherry,
My daughter, who does my Web site, got very upset because the illustration from
my poem, Grounds for Divorce was copied and used on another Web site, with a
humorous caption, without giving me credit. It has happened before and is the
price one pays for making their work available for people to enjoy. I will never
get published so this is the only way I have of letting people see my creations.
Google picked my drawings off of my Web site and they can be easily accessed by
typing in my name, "R. Wayne Edwards" and clicking on IMAGES. A friend of mine
suggests that I put a watermark on each drawing but with over a thousand
illustrations, that would be time consuming. I am embedding the image rather
than attaching, we'll see if that works. Meanwhile, I have asked my grandson,
who works at YAHOO! to tell me if there is a way to send the attachment.

While writing this, the woman sent an apology...

Wayne

Wayne,

Maybe you can get credit for this error, and have a whole new audience to
view your work.

Perhaps there is a bright side to all of this.

The computer is always a wealth of info and images for all. It's amazing
what folks put on it. Some folks have no shame!
