When I was in Art School, we used old sofa cushions, wrapped in duct tape, for
chiseling marbel, plaster, cement, etc....
worked pretty well actually

I was wondering what is a good base to use for shock absorbency, sturdiness,

I have a strong wood workbench and I was going to put an old towel under the
slab to prevent slippage. Would this work?
