Well, based on the "non-uniformity" of use, I'd have to refrain from
calling these standardized. Seems more like what you'd encounter by a bunch
of bickering kids with walkie-talkies. Everyone knows the value of
communications and putting all the eggs in one basket will never get buy-in
from all public agencies. This is the same phenomenon that made the 9-11
scenario such a fiasco. Everyone wants to be unique and special and it will
take a VERY HEAVY hand to force all the public service agencies to "get with
the program". How long have we have trunked systems and what excuses are
being given for non participation in a combined network?

Fred,
I am not in your local area, but can hopefully help. There are multiple
types of digital formats, and on P25, or Project 25, can be monitored by a
scanner. I believe that some of the areas you mentioned may be using one of
the other types that can't be monitored, even with a digital scanner, for
this reason.

Greetings all. It's nice to know that there are still some
scanners out here. I've been "off the air" for a number of years but have a
trunk tracker and am eager to learn about the different protocols and band
plans in the metro-Detroit area. I'm primarily interested in the Warren,
Troy, Madison Heights and Sterling Heights areas.

I have a feeling that since police and fire communications have
gone digital and thus have moved farther away from the general citizenry in
terms of scanning with an old Bearcat or even a crystal-controlled rig, that
there is a lot more action going on then the local media ever catches wind
of. I'm regular made aware of these so-called "police situations" that
apparently get resolved without any kind of public disclosure. Fred in
Warren

Thanks Jim...yes I'm sure for "real tactical security", their
locked-down tight enough to avoid decryption thus compromising their
intended mission. Honestly it does make me a little nervous that there is
no longer any general "oversight" of their communications by the public at
large. I just heard of a "new program" out in St. Clair Shores whereby the
police are willing to broadcast "messages of local interest" like amber
alerts and gunman in the area and prowler spotted in the area via SMS page
to people's cell phones once you give them your name, address and cell-phone
number. More than likely this will be used in multiple ways. Once the
"bad-guys" register for the service, they can make a report that the Big Boy
at 9 & Jefferson is being robbed and that way, there won't be much of a
chance their friends will get caught for the next half hour as they break
into boats at the marina down the street to steal GPS units, sound systems
and 2-way radios. Seems to me if they just went back to analog and asked
the public to get inexpensive scanners and listen to the dispatchers, the
cops would again have a few thousand more eyes and ears to help them. Hell,
the city could even stream the dispatcher's and the cars audio over the
Internet via a link from the city website. I wonder what the cops ever
thought about the general public scanning in the first place? Probably the
same way they feel about homeowners having guns in the house. Some plus and
some minus.

What county do you live in? I'm sure someone here would be willing to
help with the programming (I know I would). I can only help with the
GRE models though.

Any of the GRE PSR-500, PSR-600, Radio Shack Pro-106, Pro-197, Bearcat
396t/xt, 996t/xt should work fine. One thing to keep in mind is that you
should consider programming software for whichever you choose. It is not
required, but will make programming it much easier, especially anytime you
have alot to program, like when you first get it, before a trip, etc.

You didn't say which area you were in. If in Oakland or Allegan counties you
may still have some issues hearing local law enforcement due to the type of
systems they have.

Please consider exporting them to the .bin format before you post them.
That way those of us that use PSREdit500 can use them as well. WIN500
can import and use those files as well.

(Yeah, I'm biased, since I wrote PSREdit500) :)

I know there are other forums that carry files. I have a few that are packed
with a lot of good stuff for the Detroit Area, The Thumb, From Luddington up the
Sleeping Bear, Ann Arbor.
