I used the faces of a couple of short pieces of W-1 drill rod to do test punching of new punches. Once they were completely covered with punch work, I asked my machinist friend to reface them. He said that they had hardened considerably from the punch work. Thus, even though we don't normally heat harden the dies, they end of somewhat hardened with punching.
