For any sca-jml members who do not also read the Tousando forum, a
group of us have gotten together this year to form a Japanese themed
encampment. If you are attending Estrella, I do hope you'll come visit
us, though I confess, our little slice of Nihon officially qualifies
as a faraway place. New Year's Eve party is Thursday evening,
7:30-ish? Sake, tea, other refreshments depending on what's fresh at
the market...

shows the site. Look for the mustard colored Atenveldt blocks first.
Look for the number "30" in the uppermost Atenveldt strip. That's
roughly where we will be, on the north side of Agincourt Road. Our
gate will be flying black banners with a gold (yellow) demi-roundel.

(C'mon, did you really think we were gonna fly the Hinomaru? We'd have
to launch a sneak attack against Caid or something....)

I will also be teaching on Saturday afternoon a class on women writers
of the medieval period. (3:00, unless the collegium organizers change
something on us.)

Greetings all. I am known as Mushime. I am researching a female persona
of the kamakura era. Although the wife of a Samurai I have run into bad
luck due to the wars and am now the hand servant of an upper class
woman.

I finally understand the layers of robes and seasonal colors for the
Heian era but how did it change in the Kamakura era? For instance, is
the hitoe and outermost robe the important colors to have correct?
I've checked the archives on this list and didn't see anything to
explain this for kamakura. Can someone suggest resources specific for
the kamakura period.

your most humble servant,
Mushime

It didn't in the Imperial court. Lady Nijo's diary, chronicling events
in the middle of the Kamakura period, indicates that the court was
still harking back to the glory of the Heian period, fashion wise.

The kasane color combinations specifically refer to your hitoe and the
five (or fewer in summer or really informal situations) layers worn
over it. The color of the uwagi worn over that is not specified
anywhere that I know of.

Best place to look online is the Kyoto Costume Museum website.
http://www.iz2.or.jp/english/

Outside the court, it's likely that the rigorous color combinations of
kasane did not remain in fashion. Layering continued to some extent,
but nagabakama went away and kosode became the basic unit of one's
wardrobe. However, season-appropriate colors and design motifs
probably did exist. While the following link is to a poetry site, it
may give you some ideas as to what motifs (and related colors) are
appropriate in certain seasons. http://renku.home.att.net/500ESWd.html
For example, a kosode or uchikake with plum, pine and bamboo (the
"Three Friends") on it would be just the thing to wear in winter,
cherry blossoms are spring, maple leaves autumn, and so forth...

If you don't have it, Liza Dalby's "Kimono: Fashioning Culture"
explores the Heian kasane in great detail.

Hope this helps a bit,

So I've posted this on tousando, but I know there are some folks who
aren't there too, and this was just too good to share.

There's this web forum, "Immortal Geisha" <http://www.immortalgeisha.com/
  > It's, not surprisingly, focused on Geisha. It's mostly post-SCA
period, and mostly womenswear. Since I have opportunities to wear post-
SCA period Japanese, and since they do have tiny bits on menswear if
you're willing to dig, I check it out once in a while. Someone
mentioned it on tousando the other day, so I took that as my noodge to
take a look again.

They recently (well, in the last few months) added a "Kimono & Kitsuke
Book Reviews" section that caught my eye:
<http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/viewforum.php?f=28>

The first thing I noticed is that they're good at tagging languages;
subject lines include little national flag icons. This is cool, it
makes it easy to find works with English texts.

One of the reviewed books with English text is "Kimono and the Colors
of Japan"
<http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/viewtopic.php?t=9936>

The review piqued my interest. What really got me, though, was some
sample excerpted text. The author referenced period use of colors, and
in some cases notable historical (in some cases SCA-period) figures
who favored those colors. Male notable historical figures. I set up an
amazon.co.jp account and ordered it and its two companion volumes.

At the bottom of one of the reviews, I noticed a link for "Naomi no
Kimono Asobi" <http://www.kimonoasobi.com/>, the personal website for
Naomi, founder of IG. She's got a blog.

She just posted a series of color tables from "Japanese Design: Modern
Approaches to Traditional Elements," "Japanese Colors - Nara to
Muromachi Era."
<http://www.kimonoasobi.com/?p=94>

There isn't as much information about this book, and it appears to be
out-of-print, but I'm taking a chance on it.

I've been looking for asian color tables and guides for a while now.
My wearable art gang is always interested in this sort of thing; we
were talking about it just a few months ago. We'll see if these open
up any new design possibilities.

Greetings All Good Gentles,

     SCA Asian Persona Survey
     http://www.brassbricks.com/sca/east_asian_personae_main.htm

This is the "Pre-Gulf War" update about the SCA Asian Persona Survey. The
project has been successful thus far, thanks to the assistance of a great many
people. I have about 150 names, and have made contact with all but a handful of
them. I suspect that this total is not even half of the total that might be out
there.

As with past such notices, I am gathering the names, locations, and contact
information from SCAdians playing personae that hail from Asia: China, Japan,
Korea, India, and the Mongol Empire. I have not been able to reach the Mongols,
Chinese, Japanese, and Indians residing within all of the Known World equally.
Some have been simplicity itself. Other regions remain silent and
underrepresented.

As always, I ask that you pass this message along to other email lists or
communities that you think might be interested, especially to kingdom or
regional email lists. With your continued assistance, this project can remain a
useful, viable addition to the SCA online presence.

I will be camping with the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, Ansteorra, and I will
probably be making introductions and gathering information any time I am not on
the field. Look for me if you want to chat... I fight in black samurai armor,
with black, white, and gold livery worn over it. My personal mon is a gold
mitsutomoe. Please contact me at your convenience at spearweasel@...

Greetings Everyone!

I am having a little trouble figuring out how to properly pronounce my
name. I'm starting to get active again after a few (4) years of
barely playing, and will be at Gulf Wars. I would like to be able to
say my name correctly so that I squash the mispronunciation that has
started. Naome is the name in question. Many see this name and call
me "nay-oh-mee" which sounds very wrong to me. I think it should
sound as "now-meh" or "nay-oh-meh" but fear that either of these may
be wrong as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,

The first part is like an extended "now" (nah-o) -- remember it's two
syllables instead of just one -- and the second is like "meh"

With me being a larger individual (height), I am having issues finding
period garb for my character in the SCA. I know someone that will
help me make the garb I'm looking for and has the patterns, but I'm
still having trouble finding decent resolution pictures for me to have
a better idea to go on. So far all I have is a set of hakama, an old
gi top, and 2 separate kimonos that don't fit me anymore. If anyone
can help me figure something out it would be much appreciated. I'm
also having issues finding footwear in my size, as size 15 is hard to
come by for any type of footwear be it mundane or otherwise.

Ok, first off the name I'm thinking about is Masamaro, as the name I
was given orginally by a friend is from Naruto and to the best of my
research was only used in Naruto. Any feedback on if I should change
or add to it would be great.

Second, I have had touble finding footwear for my persona as size 15
is very uncommon in Japan, even today.

Third, I have some garb that consists of pretty much and old martial
arts gi that I have and 2 kimonos that don't really fit. I need help
with choosing a material that was easily accessable back then and
currently that hopefully wont cost me an arm and a leg.

Forth, finding a wakasashi to match the Mushashi katana that I use.

Anyone with any help or feedback for me would be much appreciated.

While "Masamaro" doesn't seem to be a documented name, we can document
the use of "Masa" and "maro" as elements within male names. However,
"maro" is an ending usually used for a child's name during the
medieval period. Is that really what you want?

Please see Effingham's site
http://www.sengokudaimyo.com/miscellany/miscellany.html and click on
the "Names" link for a discussion on how Japanese male names are
formed. You'll need to decide a date for your persona (just ballpark
figure--names were formed differently in different eras) and whether
he is going to be kuge (courtier) or buke (samurai) class (or if you
want to be an artisan or farmer, go right ahead!). This can help you
narrow down the appropriate form you want to use for your name.

Also, see your local herald (or go to the Herald's table at a larger
event) and consult with them. They are always eager for customers!

Mangaka (comic artists) often make up names for their characters. These are
often word plays and combinations of other words.

wooden geta are easily made and for next to no money (pine + white paint +
small length of cotton). Not the most comfortable footwear though. Ebay has
many sellers whom make their own Waruji (straw) sandals, You can see if any
of them make them big enough to fit you and maybe even weedle the designs
out of them.

Speaking of Ebay, it sells copious amounts of printed kimono cotton/silk for
low low prices.

toes, rather leave them free to touch the ground. There are special tabi made
with leather under the toes just for that reason.

It's loud, it's obnoxious, it scares people, it can raise the blood. Bagpipes,
the original rock 'n' roll instrument!

Have you looked at Otagiri-dono's Tousando website? He has some patterns
for making waraji.
http://www.rhinohide.cx/tousando/yoriaku/waraji.html (specific waraji stuff
and patterns)
http://www.rhinohide.cx/tousando/yoriaku/index.html (general Tanki Yoriaku
site)

I am sure that this question has been raised in the past, but I would
like some help. I am looking for some paterns for proper period
kataginu. I have found pictures, but no paterns or instructions about
how to make them. I do not mean the later Tokugawa style with the
overly large stiffened shoulders, but rather the smaller Momoyama
version. Thanks.

Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sca-jml/files/Garb%20files/ and
look for a PDF on "Hitatare." It includes a kataginu pattern that
should suit you.
