Subject: To those who have told the President to ban torture
TORTURE IS A MORAL ISSUE
To those who have endorsed the Declaration of Principles for a
Presidential Executive Order on Prisoner Treatment, Torture and
Cruelty
Dear Friend:
Thank you for endorsing the declaration of principles calling for a
presidential executive order banning torture. The National Religious
Campaign Against Torture is grateful to you for your commitment.
On June 25, over 200 Catholic, evangelical, Baptist and other
religious leaders, as well as retired government leaders in the
military and foreign policy, including George Schultz and Madeline
Albright, called upon the President to issue an executive order
banning torture.
By a week later, 3,200 of you have also endorsed. In addition, the
General Assembly (the highest body) of the Presbyterian Church (USA)
has endorsed as well. Incredible news!
Since we had over a ten fold increase in one week, could each of you
agree to ask ten people to go online to www.tortureisamoralissue.org
to endorse the Declaration? They should click on "Tell the President:
Ban Torture".
The momentum to end torture is growing. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Richard Killmer

Dear All -
Please note the following invitation for a Summer Forum, sponsored

Feminist Studies in Religion).
If you know of other women interested in attending this Forum,
please do pass along the information to them.
Thank you,

*****************************
You are Invited to Join Feminist Scholars
For A Summer Forum
"Feminist Theologies: Heritage and Future"
15-20 June 2008, Washington, DC
The Women's Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual (WATER)
and Feminist Studies in Religion, Inc. (FSR) are pleased to invite
graduate students and junior faculty to our first Summer Forum on
Feminist Theologies in Washington, DC, June 15-20, 2008. This
inaugural year of what we envision as an annual gathering will focus
on "Making the Connections: Claiming Our Past—Envisioning Our Future
Together." You are cordially invited to apply.
This residential program provides the space and opportunity
to work with colleagues across generations, religions,
racial/ethnic, and disciplinary lines creating new knowledge and
deepening feminist scholarly collaboration. We are pleased that
distinguished scholars in the field, including Katie Geneva Cannon,
Mary E. Hunt, Judith Plaskow, Kwok Pui-lan, Elisabeth Schüssler
Fiorenza, and Deborah Whitehead have agreed to provide leadership
for the entire week of lively discussions and creative debate in a
communal atmosphere.
This Summer Forum provides a chance to network with
colleagues, to learn from and with leading scholars in the field,
and to explore together religious and theological questions,
methodological approaches, and theoretical frameworks. The many
different theoretical voices of womanist, liberationist, Latina,
postcolonial, Asian, transcultural, critical rhetorical, critical
gender, and black feminist studies in religion and theology will be
explored in order to articulate feminist theologies for the future.
The Forum will add a wonderful new dimension to our
collaborative work. Making connections with senior scholars in the
field is crucial not only for navigating traditional malestream
institutions but also for making the connections between feminist
studies in religion of the past, present, and future. Making
connections with younger scholars is an exciting way to see
pioneering work deepened and extended.
The Summer Forum will be held at a conference site in Washington,
DC, where all of the participants will live for the week. The
program will include plenary sessions, seminars, and working groups
as well as meals and informal time together. It aims to deepen our
understanding of our rich intellectual history and set the
trajectories for new vistas and collaboration for the future. It
will be an experience of feminist pedagogy as well as a chance to
sharpen one's own research and teaching focus.
The fee for the Summer Forum is $800 including room, board, and
program. Scholarships are available (thanks to the generosity of the
Henry Luce Foundation and Feminist Studies in Religion, Inc.) but
graduate students and junior faculty are urged to seek funding from
their departments and institutions, from their denominations and
other sources so that we can include a wide range of participants.
Application deadline is April 1, 2008. Participants will be notified
after April 15, 2008.
Please direct inquiries and send completed applications to:

11/17/2007
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM
Room: 30 B - CC
Theme: Hosted by the SBL's Status of Women in the Profession Committee
The CSWP invites you to a conversation that usually takes place late
at night and after several receptions. From the thrill of
trailblazing to the agony of working with a text that can be
dangerous to her health, three women members of SBL will talk
candidly about life as a biblical scholar and a woman. How does one
deal with menstrual cycles, in the Bible and in one's life? What do
you do when everyone calls you "Mrs." instead of "Dr."? What research
subjects are taboo at my institution? What if I'm one of the other
"Others"? We invite the women and men of SBL to consider the real
lives of women biblical scholars.

Alan Lenzi (alenzi@...; view his vita <http://www1.pacific.edu/%7Ealenzi/Lenzi%20VITA.pdf>) is putting together a volume of autobiographical essays from biblical scholars about how studying the Bible has impacted their faith, including accounts from scholars who have struggled but maintain their faith as well as accounts from those who have completely abandoned faith. The intention is to be as representative of the field of biblical studies and its various viewpoints as possible (though due to the posing of the issue, most if not all scholars will be [ex]Christian). A number of scholars, both men and women, have agreed to write, but Alan wants to include more voices from women (from anywhere on the spectrum of "belief/doubt").
The following is a brief description of the editorial expectation:
Each scholar will recount their religious background, tell about how they got into biblical studies and where they studied, lay out some of the major challenges their faith has experienced due to their engagement with the field, highlighting at least a couple of concrete biblical examples that have been particularly vexing to them personally, and then talk about where they are intellectually now. Some more general reflections about biblical studies and faith may also be included, especially from the more experienced scholars who have seen the ebb and flow of the field/society/religious communities. Each scholar will write about 20 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt. font), but that is open to discussion (generally and individually). The intention is to present reflective essays in a conversational tone. Footnotes and scholarly jargon will be held to a minimum.
In order to foster intellectual / creative freedom, key terms like
faith, religion, secularism, etc. will remain undefined at the editorial
level. Scholars are encouraged to reflect upon these matters in their
individual essays.
A book proposal is currently already under consideration at Eerdmans, who understands that a few more participants will be included to insure a diversity of viewpoints. There is not yet a contract and the timetable, final requirements / expectations of contributors, and final list of contributors is still undetermined. The project is still in the planning stage.
FYI - This article describes efforts to set up a child-care program for
the annual meeting of the Association for Jewish Studies.

The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion Expands New Scholars Award
The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion announces an expansion of its New Scholars Award program. As you may already know, the JFSR is a channel for the publication of feminist scholarship in religion and a forum for discussion and dialogue among women and men of various feminist perspectives. The New Scholars Award signals our awareness of the need to encourage and give recognition to the emerging voices of new scholars, whose research and insights will shape the future of feminist studies in religion.
Beginning with the Fall 2007 Award, there will be tiered awards with the first place winner receiving $1000.00, the second place winner receiving $500.00, and the third place winner receiving $250.00.
Participation in the New Scholars Award competition does not require an advanced academic degree. However, authors cannot have taught at the college or university level for more than three years at the time of submission. Submissions will first enter the standard blind review process. Once an article is accepted for publication, it will be considered for the New Scholars Award. Submissions will be judged by a panel to determine the winners. To participate in this award, authors should please submit three copies of the manuscript and include a cover letter stating his or her intention to participate in the award. The winning manuscripts will appear in the JFSR.
For further information on the JFSR, full submission guidelines, and the New Scholars Award information, please visit our website at: www.hds.harvard.edu/jfsr or email us at jfsr@....
