I've been entirely too swamped at work to make it to any meetings
lately. Anything new? I was going to go to Pflugerville today, but my
kid has a baseball game. Did anyone else go?
Ray
Last Saturday, Ray Kinsel, David Jones and myself went to the launch at
Pflugerville. Ray certified level 1 on an H128. It was a textbook flight
and he was really glad for the spill hole in his chute because the winds
were a lot stronger aloft then the 15-18mph on the ground. I put up my
Bumblebee on an F20 and lost the rocket as it drifted over a road and a pair
of power lines about 3/4 of a mile from the launch site.
We noticed that the Austin crowd were doing dual deployment with no drogue
chute. That was the only way they could keep the rockets within walking
distance.
They will loose the field soon, but have another lined up. Unfortunatly, it
will be subject to farming seasons. They are trying to get into McGreggor
and have launches there. I wish them a lot of luck cause I like that site.
Once again, congratulations to Ray, our newest high power certifier.
I won't be at the Feb meeting as I have to be in Dayton, Ohio so I guess
I'll either see y'all in March or perhaps in Kingsbury.
Bill, be sure to let us know date and time for the launch.
Don Cosgrove
I was out of town for the meeting on the 2nd. Anything new going on?

Hey group,
Was just at Hobby Lobby. Seems they are giong to start
carrying Aerotech kits and single use motors. They had
quite a few of the f20's g35's and g38's. This was at
the Hobby Lobby in Leon Valley. Let me know if you see
Aerotech at other Hobby Lobbys in town.

The AARG egg contest launch has been postphoned until 18 January. As far as
I know, the Kingsbury Aerodrome launch is on for this Saturday, Dec 15 at
10:00. I still plan to launch the Cesaroni I360 depending on wind.
Bill,
If you hear anything different, let me know and I'll get it out to the
group.

The meeting last night wasn't well attended. Upcomming is a launch this
Saturday near Seguin. It will be at the old Kingsbury Aerodrome. Primary
purpose is for Kruger Middle School, but we are invited to launch with them.
Waiver to 5000 ft for sure, but they are trying for 8000. Won't know until
Saturday if that happens.
There is also a two day launch in Pflugerville. It is primarily a contest
launch for eggs. Highest egg on an "E" motor as well as other. I don't
believe there was a prize for the most well scrambled egg.
Either place, we will have to watch the wind as a cold front is due in
Friday and the day after a cold front is generally quite windy.
I am going to try to make the Seguin launch and if it turns out to be too
windy, I'll try to fly Sunday in Pflugerville. I want to fly the Cesaroni 5
grain motor in my Black Brant.
Boost em high and fast.

Hey:
I missed tonight's meeting, can anyone let me know what took place? I
haven't had any luck trying to track down a place here in town to
launch, and I'm thinking of making the drive to Pflugerville this
Saturday if it dries up.
Ray
David,
I launched last Friday with AARG. The wind was about 15 on the ground, but
a lot stronger up high. I launched Nightshade (black rocket with the very
large fins) on an I300 to about 3000 ft. It was still over 1000ft up when
we lost sight of it because it drifted too far. Pretty flight for a last
one. They have another launch (primarily contest) on Dec 8 and 9. I am
going to try to make that one too. I intend to join their club as well as
continuing in SARS since I am starting to fly with them quite a bit.
Other news. I now have a five grain Cesaroni tube and two reloads in my
posession. I have a six grain on order. The five grain was a J 360 until
they lowered the weight of the grains. It is now an I360. Designations are
a little different as this reload is designated 610I360 which translates
into 610 newtons total impulse in an I360 motor. 31 more newtons and you
could use it to cert level 2.
If you hear of any launches between 22 Dec and 1 Jan, let me know. My son
Michael will be home from the Navy and he wants to cert level 2. Hope we
can get it done. I'll bring the new motors to the next meeting.

Tripoli Rocky Mountains, TRA 72 and PHITS- Punching Holes in The Sky, NAR 565 are jointly hosting the first annual "Mile Hi Mayhem" 3 day regional launch May 17-19, 2002. We intend to fly at the TRM site Northeast of Ft. Collins, Colorado. Those of you who have visited the TRM site know it to be one of the greatest places in the country for a launch.
Attached you will find the registration form in a PDF file. Also, there is a preliminary web page at http://www.televiso.com/~3d/MHM/ to check out for more information. We anticipate a decent turnout.
Please forward this email to your members, and let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to pass this on to any neighboring clubs who would be interested in attending. We hope to see you all in May!
Caeseroni Technology 38mm motors no longer require a LEUP. They were
convinced to cut the grain size to 62.5gm. I ordered the five grane tube
and two reloads from Magnum. He has run out of the six grain tubes, but
should have them back in stock in about three weeks. Caeseroni is also
working on a 54mm engine. That one will require a LEUP, but should be
available from Jim Turner of Trailing Edge so we should be able to pick up
and use our purchase at a launch site.

No good news. We still do not have any prospects for a place to fly. For
those interested, the drive to Pflugerville is about 80 minutes or so. They
have a launch tomorrow and regularly schedule launches something like the
second Saturday of the month for commercial motors and the third or fourth
for experimental. Power is up to full K.
What we really need is our own launch site a bit closer than Pflugerville.
No launch scheduled this month.

Here are the details on my level II attempt.
First, it was successful. Thanks to David Jones for all his help.
Altitude was 2838ft on a J460 with dual deployment. The altimeter bay
pulled out the main chute a bit early, but everything was recovered in
perfect shape. The J460 performed flawlessly. I liked the blue thunder
propellant. You could really see how it gets its name. Attached is a
picture, again thanks to David.
My only other launch of the day was an H112 in the aluminum fin rocket I
flew at cornerstone. No altimeter, but it Rick, the launch director,
thought it grabbed more altitude than my Level 2.

The next Cornerstone launch will be on 14 October. Some folks are there by
10:30.
There is also a High Power launch at the Pflugerville site of AARG on 13 and
14 October. I plan to make my LEvel 2 cert flight there on the 13th.
Don Cosgrove
I'll bring mine tomorrow.

Club
Does anyone in the club have an Estes Altitrak?
There is a young man who wants to do a simple
science fair project to measure altitude vs
weight added to the rocket. The young man and
his mom will be at our next club meeting and will
attend our next sport launch to do the project.
Don, I wil bring testing materials for your level
2 exam...I have not forgotten.
David
Just wanted to let the club know I will not be able to
attend the club meeting Wednesday evening on 09/05/01.
It's the wife's birthday and I will be doing the hubby
thing.
As far as club business goes, I would like to promote
use of YahooGroups for the club by subscribing to
"sars_rocketry-subscribe@yahoogroups.com".
See you at the meeting in October.
Oh yes, Don please post here when the next club launch
is going to be. I want to make it.
David
