Reminder: there's a Santarchy Tokyo phone contact list available as a Google
Spreadsheet. It's not public (for obvious reasons) but if you're a Santa this
year let me know and I'll add you to it if you're not in it already.

Love the flyer.
I am another Tokyo-bound Santa, coming from San Francisco. This is not my first
visit to Japan, though it will be my first SantaCon. Looking forward to
meeting everyone.

Unfortunately, your event is occurring the Saturday before I arrive, so it would be wonderful of some of these folks are willing to stick around until Christmas! Tokyo really is a remarkable city, there is really no end of things to see and enjoy there.
Although it's not on the Yamanote line, but accessable by Metro subway, the "new", Roppongi Hills complex Tokyo View/Mori Art Museum complex is well worth a visit. The panoramic view from the 52nd floor is quite nice, the architecture is splendid, and the museum is wonderful!
By the way, somebody mentioned an RSS feed, and dropping some machine translator into their reader?
How does one actually do that, and what kind of reader are you talking about?
CAUTION: Machine translation of Nihongo (Japanese) is almost invariably futile, or fraught with terminal errors.
I don't know if this is only true of translating Romaji, (the Romanized phonetic equivalent of Japanese, AKA "Hepburn",) but I have had very little success with machine translations. One would suppose Romaji would be simple to translate into English by computer, as compared with translations from Kana and Kanji charactersinto Roman letters, but apparently it isn't.
If somebody knows of a good machine translator, please let me know, as I have tried every one I have found on the web and the results are laughable at best.
Tokyo is cold in wintertime, so insulate your bright red butts!
I will arrive in Tokyo on December 13 and will be bumming around Yokohama mostly with a few santas when I'm not at Siggraph. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to get together.

Hello, new Santa. The plan every year (so far) is that Santas meet on the last
Saturday before Christmas in front of Hachiko, in Shibuya.
Santa Magari just released the new flyer designs with instructions and
supplementary URLs if you'd like something to refer to.

I'm here in Berkeley, where the wonderful Santarchy happened last year downtown and at the Jupiter Pub.
Yes, I will be in Tokyo, staying with my fiance, and I'd love to surprise her by encountering a Santa swarm, but since she likes to plan things well in advance, (with some wiggle room left for me), I'd like to get some idea of where the swarms MIGHT be occurring, and when.
Obviously along the Yamanote (downtown loop), line is most convenient, so can I get any hints, either on or off-list?

P.S. If you need any translation help, I have a friend who might be willing to help.
Magari is using @SantarchyTokyo on Twitter to keep the Santas updated, which is difficult for me since I don't speak Japanese.
I spent a little while screwing around with Yahoo Pipes and came up with this RSS feed. Drop it into your reader and it'll display an automatic, machine-translated translated version of Magari's feed.

Recent comments mention "carpet bombing", "destructive acts", and "high risk of
death". This is looking to be a very exciting santacon.
The failure of all known commercial santa suits is the pants. You generally have
to wear them over your normal pants which is hot and bothersome if you're trying
to get into your pockets.
Dickies sells an excellent pair of pants in bright screaming red. They're well
made, comfortable, reasonably cheap, very durable, and work well as the lower
half of your santa suit.

I was reminded of this because two pairs of pants just showed up at work and
they're not my size. Did one of the foreign santas buy these and mail them to
me, intending for me to bring them to Japan?
A locked iPhone certainly does, albeit with a rather shocking bill at the end. Mine roamed on docomo or Softbank. I'd expect that a Softbank sim would work just fine, and (depending on their data plan) might allow skype over the air, unlike AT&T. That would be a huge win.
For keeping the costs down, it was great to have an Airport Express to make in room calls and navigation a breeze. They just don't do the wireless that much.
I'll miss y'all, but I was there in cherry blossom season (April) which also rocked.

also, anyone know if an unlocked american iphone 3gs would work on the network over there? was considering just renting a sim card...
I don't know about sim card compatibility, but phones may be rented.
I found the best rate on a softbank phone reserved over the internet at
Y250/day + usage. They have a retail shop in Shibuya across from Don
Quixote or airport pickup.
http://www.softbank-rental.jp/smpl/ib/phone-rental-japan.html
Accordign to the web page, they also rent SIM cards but I don't know
anything about compatibility. You probably need a quad-band phone. Not
sure about the iPhone.

Subject: Gary's Happy Hour: 2 Fun B4B Events This Week To: Gary Bremermann <gary@...>
Hi All,
Just a quick reminder of two fun Beers for Books events
happening this week:
WHAT: Slang Bingo B4B @ The Pink Cow
WHEN: Thursday, November 19th 7PM - Late
WHERE: The Pink Cow in Omotesando
WHY: Really fun party game like Human Bingo, great way
to meet people while creating books for kids, live music before and DJ’s after
bingo.
COST: No entry charge, 100 yen for every drink will
buy a treasured book for kids in developing countries.
WHAT: Road Trip to Numazu,
Shizuoka Pref.
for B4B at the Baird Brewery
WHEN: Sunday, November 22nd Noon - Midnight
WHERE: Baird Brewing Co.’s Fishmarket Taproom in Numazu,
Shizuoka Prefecture
WHY: Drink some of Japan’s best craft beer at the
source, tour the brewery, and create books for kids.
COST: No entry charge, 100 yen for every drink will
buy a treasured book for kids, brewery tours and beer quiz for prizes.
The Slang Bingo will be the second monthly Slang Bingo event
at The Pink Cow for Beers for Books and this time the focus will be on San
Diego/Southern California slang, so if you’re looking to expand your vocabulary
and meet some really nice people, come on by. Slang Bingo starts at 8PM
and you won’t want to miss it. In addition to Slang Bingo, Traci has a
full slate of entertainment before and after, with folk singer/songwriter Stuart
O’Connor on tour from the UK
and DJ’s as well.
For this Sunday’s event, it’s a road trip to Numazu, Shizuoka
to visit the legendary Baird Brewing Co. and see how craft beer has made (of
course while enjoying drinking it too). We’ll have a beer quiz for some
great prizes and you’ll learn more about beer in one day that you probably
learned your entire life. Bryan Baird is very passionate about beer and
happy to share his knowledge with others. Make a day of it, or plan to
stay overnight in Numazu.
It’s not too far from Tokyo
and definitely worth the trip.
NOTE: You are getting this message because you are on my
mailing list for Gary's
Happy Hour Party usually held on the 3rd Thursday of every odd month. If you'd
like to be taken off the mailing list, please let me know.

- Deaf Midget Santa
I'd like to do a Skype conference call to brainstorm what to do post-christmas
and post-Okinawa. Getting a JR pass and ending up in Nagasaki is good but we
should talk about stopping in points along the way.
Some Santas are in California, Santa Kennedy is in Wellington (-3 hours +
"tomorrow"), there are some Santas in Japan (-6 hours + "tomorrow"), and Santa
Totoro is in Khartoum (+11 hours).
How is Saturday, 1:00PM PST for everyone? If my math is right that would be:
Khartoum: Saturday, 12:00 Midnight
Tokyo: Sunday, 7:00 AM
Wellington: Sunday, 10:00AM
If anyone can't participate I'll post a summary here when we're done. My Skype
ID is the same as my AIM and YIM ID. If you don't know any of those please mail
me and I will tell you off-list.
Are hotel rooms anywhere else likely to be cheaper?

If I was reading the calendar correctly (and I'm illiterate, so it's far from
certain that I was) we're not staying beyond the 23rd because that's when the
holiday is, which means hotels get a LOT more expensive. Twice as expensive or
something. It would be preferable to do the big event on the 23rd, stay

Ijinden? Can you confirm this?
