Although Santmat is as ancient as it could get, dating back to the Rishis of Vedic Age. Lord Buddha is regarded by many as the first sant of modern India. Adi Shankaracharya, Guru Matsyendranath, Guru Gorakhnath, Sant Kabir, Guru Nanak, Sant Dadu Dayal Ji, Sant Namadev Ji, Sant Jagjeevan Ji, Sant Sundar Das Ji, Sant Charan Das Ji, Sant Ravi Das, Sant Tulsidas, Sant Surdas, Sant Dariya Sahab, Sant Paltu Sahab, Sant Sahajo Bai, Sant Mira Bai, Sufi mystics such as Rumi, Sarmad, Shams, Boo Ali, Tabrez etc, Christian sants like St John, St Augustine etc are only a few to name. However, Sant Tulsi Sahab of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, India is said to have used the term Santmat (View or Teachings of Sants) for the first term in recent times. And to him several branches of modern Santmat trace their origin. Below is presented some of the important Santmat lineages:
