Sanguinarius News & Updates - 7 February, 2002
==========================================================

Hello, again, from Sangi-Land. It's time for the News at Night.

Guess what? I just discovered a place online where you can play the
old Infocom "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" game. Go to
http://sarcasm.foreverchat.net/hhg/hhgtg.html This has made my
millennium! I used to play that game when I had my old Apple IIc,
and when I got a new computer, it was a PC not a Mac and I could no
longer play the game. Well, now I can once more! I am ecstatic!
The only drawback to the online game is that you can't save your
position.

I would like to extend special thanks to all those who contributed to
the Real Vampire Directory Repair Fund, and especially to someone in
the community who made a very large contribution, but who wishes to
remain anonymous. The Real Vampire Directory has been not working
correctly since I moved to the server I am on. Gossamer Threads, the
creators of the Links 2.0 script which powers the directory, charges
$100 USD per hour for their coding services; they said it probably
would not take more than a couple of hours to remedy the problem, but
that was $200 that I did not have.

GOOD NEWS! THEY FIXED IT!!! THEY FIXED IT!! :D YAYY!! Plus, they
only charged me $50.00! So I was able to return the excess
contributions back to the contributors! :D

Please check out the following link:

The Science of Vampires, by Kathering Ramsland
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0425186164/sanguinarius
From what I have read so far, this is an engrossing and entertaining
book to read. It delves into the scientific possibilities of how
vampires as described in folklore and fiction *could* exist within
the bounds of nature and science.

ShadowLore of Kansas for Vampires, Fae, Wiccans/Witches, Otherkin,
Etc.

I was recently appointed to start a group for real vampires (as well
as witches, fae, weres otherkin, etc.) in Kansas as a chapter of
ShadowLore, which has branches in various states. I'm writing to let
you all know about the group, which will be both online and offline,
and will hold Gatherings and get-togethers for vampires, as well as
witches, weres, fae, otherkin, etc., in Kansas. Eventually, other
things such as outreach, possibly fundraisers for charity, and who
knows? Whatever we can think of to do.

This is not a roleplaying group, and only those residing IN KANSAS,
USA, will be admitted as members. Why? Because it's a Kansas group,
that's why. :)

You can find more information at
http://www.sanguinarius.org/~shadowloreks/ as well as the group's
Yahoo page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ShadowLore_Kansas

For those of you who are interested but do not live in Kansas (and
those who do), please feel free to check out the main ShadowLore
group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ShadowLore and they can give
you more information about chapters of Shadowlore in your area.
Again, ShadowLore of Kansas is JUST for those in Kansas, USA.

White Wolf / Vampire: The Masquerade

It seems that White Wolf is not above hijacking ideas and concepts of
specific groups and organizations withing the REAL vampire
community/vampyre scene. I ran across this juicy bit from Michelle
Belanger (Setananhku), which says it all:

=========================
Setanankhu: I've ben plaguerized by White Wolf, too. It's aggravating
how little that can be done.

Setanankhu: I mean, we ran a game at Origins 2000, and I sat outside
after an incident with this neat fellow Clayton who was playing in
our game. We started talking about outside interestsand got onto the
Templars and Assassins.

lordblackheart13: still doesn't affect the possibility of you
movingaway from the whole thing

Setanankhu: Then we started discussing spirituality and such, and I
gave him the website before we were done. I knew he worked for White
Wolf, but what I didn't expect was to see the clanbook he was working
on that summer come out a year later -- integrating the castes into
clan ASsamite!
=========================

But, when you think about it, you'll realize that probably 95% (or
more) of the ideas, info, concepts, etc., in _Vampire: The
Masquerade_ have been taken from other sources and assimiliated inito
the game in creative and imaginative ways; there is very little that
is actually original -- just originally presented. If they start
hijacking real vampires and real vampirism, I'm going to hit the
roof, and start actively fighting tooth and nail. And pity the poor
new RPGer "sanguinarians" and "psi-vamps" who get caught in the
crossfire. Coz Homey ain't playin' DAT shit!

The Blood Coven website Closes

Viktor, founder of the Blood Coven website (
http://www.vwjr.com/bc/ ), has announced that he will be closing the
website indefinitely. His occult studies have progressed far beyond
just vampires, and he maintains an alternate site called BSPR
(Baltimore Society for Paranormal Research, at
http://www.bsprnet.com/ ). He does not have the time or means to
manage both websites without sacrificing the quality of both, and is
regretful that he must close the Blood Coven site. He adds, "Do not
however burden yourselves with a sense of loss. I have saved the
entire wealth of knowledge within the Blood Coven in the archives.
The site may yet be resurrected one night. We shall see…"

The Blood Coven website has existed in various forms since 1995. The
Blood Coven e-group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bcvampires will
remain open.

Those of you interested in knowing more about BSPR may contact Viktor
directly through his e-mail address vwjr@... or viktor@...

The Black Veil 2.0 (3.0)

The newest version of the Black Veil (a.k.a. The Thirteen Rules of
Community") which was recently revised by Michelle Belanger, is
located online at hhh . Despite the ongoing controversy, Michelle
has really done a great job on this new version. You might want to
go and take a look.

Comments by others:

"Not to bad actually." -- Lord Blackheart

"Hey, I like this much better." -- Sylvere

"Much, MUCH better than it was. Yay!" -- Sky Dancer

* * *

Black Veil Controversy

First off, Sanguinarius apologizes for starting this whole mess when
she posted her intent to write her own version of vampiric morals and
ethics (Oct.9, 2002): "I am thinking of developing my own text of
vampiric morals and ethics, based on the values and needs of those
who are specifically within the vampiric community, and I am seeking
your feedback. I think you know where I'm going with this."
Ironically, she has not even had a chance to begin to do so, but
since others have taken up the cause, she feels that her creating
such a document would be redundant at this point (or at whatever
point she would have to actually get around to working on it).

Michelle Belanger and Lord Blackheart are involved in a dispute over
the Black Veil, a voluntary code of ethics and morals developed
originally for the Sanguinarium, but which has enjoyed a certain
amount of limited acceptance within the vampiric community.
Blackheart alleged that Michelle, in order to revise the Black Veil
again, plagiarized material that he as well as others are working
on. Michelle Belanger denied the accusation, producing posted
material and dates indicating that this is not the case. Michelle
asserted that they both had been working on their materials
independently of each other at around the same time, and that she
began working on a Black Veil revision as early as October, 2002.
Lord Blackheart said that Michelle has stolen the ideas presented for
the production of "a document that was clearly stated as NOT being
[intended as] a re-write of the BV [Black Veil] and used it just for
that reason."

Many vampires who reject the Black Veil do so because of its
association with the Sanguinarium, which they do not support. They
also object to the fact that it stems from an earlier version which
was based largely on vampiric roleplaying concepts of morality and
ethics. It has long since undergone extensive revisions to make it
much more practical and applicable to the Sanguinarium "vampyre
scene", as well as the vampire community. However, "A modified
version of the Black Veil," Sapphire Debonee (Gatekeeper of St. Louis
After Dark*) said, "would still carry the same stigma of an
organization(s) that some of us don't care to support."

"I had not been happy with the most recent version for some time, and
having seen the growth and change in the community, felt it urgently
needed to be updated," Michelle Belanger wrote. "Because it had
frequently been stated that the Black Veil did not adequately reflect
the values of the majority of the community, I made a post to the GVN
[Global Vampire Network**] list on October 21, 2002, asking for
suggestions for a rewrite. I pointed out that previous requests for
suggestions had gone unanswered, yet people still complained that the
Black Veil did not reflect their values. To that end, I asked for
people to offer their criticism, however brutal, so long as they also
offered alternatives for revision."

Blackheart is spearheading a collaborative effort to create an
independent, new "Vampire Advice Document" for the community -- for
both newcomers and old-timers alike. He created an email discussion
list, "MakingVampireAdviceDoc"*** at Yahoo Groups, for the purpose of
working on this document with others interested in collaborating;
however, there have been extensive discussions and crosspostings of
messages regarding this "vampire advice document" on multiple other
lists. I assume the intent of this is to get maximum involvement
and/or feedback from the community.

Michelle Belanger is a member of at least some of the lists on which
these discussions took and are taking place. She, too, was
encouraged to listen and give her input and insight. And she also
listened to a lot of the feedback and discussion on these various
lists to determine why people were dissatisfied with the Black Veil,
and what they thought needed to be improved or changed. She posted
some of her ideas to the GVN list, to which Lord Blackheart
replied, "Good ideas, we will use them in the New 'Vampire Advice'
document. You do realize that we are not working on a Bv [Black
Veil] re-write. That is not an option for what we are doing. We
would love you to help on the new doc. and I think that we have a
lot of what you typed above already covered..."

Since Michelle Belanger had made it clear from the beginning that she
was working on a Black Veil rewrite and was looking for ideas, Lord
Blackheart's response seemed to indicate that "the cross-pollination
of ideas between the two documents is not only fair but to be
expected", according to Michelle. However, Lord Blackheart has
recently stated, "[Michelle was] CLEARLY told that we were NOT
working on a BV re-write. ... VDoc [the vampire advice e-list and/or
document] has always clearly stated that it was not for re-writing
the Black Veil. How [Michelle] came to this erronious conclusion is
a mystery. Especially so when [she] acknowledged the statement that
we didn't intend for VDoc to be used to re-write the Black Veil, yet
stated that [she] would use it's input anyway." (Sanguinarius thinks
that perhaps in that light, the dicussions relating to the creation
of the vampire advice document should perhaps have been restricted to
the MakingVampireAdviceDoc elist and Michelle not been admitted as a
member. It should be noted that both of them have stated that they
will be using the other's input.)

Adding the new feedback, ideas and insight she recieved to what she'd
been working on, Michelle then proceeded to revise the Black Veil.
When she initially published the Black Veil 3.0 (being called The
Black Veil 2.0) to the GVN list, on 23 Nov., 2002, Lord Blackheart
seemed to approve when he replied, "Not to [sic] bad actually. I
just hope that it helps to break away from all the rubbish that I
have seen in many a court."

But somewhere along the line he changed his mind and began verbally
attacking Michelle and accusing her of stealing his ideas and the
input of others just so she could keep the Black Veil alive. "He
only begins to criticize my BV 2.0 after it has gotten glowing and
very positive comments from a number of community leaders," Michelle
wrote. Lord Blackheart accuses Michelle Belanger of looking at all
the input related to the creation of an independent Vampire Advice
document (which very creation is intended as an _alternative_ to "The
Black Veil" and the Sanguinarium's materials) in order to use the
information gleaned to rewrite the Black Veil -- negating the reason
for the existence of the alternative text. At one point,
Sanguinarius equated this with industrial or corporate espionage.

Blackheart "is actually trying to stunt the growth of our community
and interfere in the natural evolution of a creative movement,"
Michelle says. "Rather than trying to help the community and fix
something that needed revising, Blackheart was simply trying to come
up with his own "Black Veil" so he could replace the one supported by
Father Todd," whom he "has an almost pathological hatred
of". ... "Blackheart's efforts here are entirely motivated by his
unrelenting and pathological jealousy of Todd. In short, he was
hoping to undermine Todd's work and set himself up as the new Father
Todd..."

Michelle:

The two documents "bear almost nothing in common," either creatively
or textually.

"The ideas the new Black Veil is predicated upon are common sense,
and there is no copyright on common sense..."

Blackheart:

"I also find it amusing how in her rebuttle she quickly says VDoc. is
using her ideas. The ideas that seemed to be little more than a
poetic summation of what VDoc first stated."

Oil and Water

On a side note, Sanguinarius observes that some people do feel that
the vampire community is apparently nothing more than a "creative
movement". While that may hold true for the Sanguinarium and the
vampyre scene / vampyre lifestylers, it is most assuredly NOT any
sort of "creative movement" for those who really DO have the vampiric
condition. Unfortunately, those who aren't vampires and are only
involved in the lifestyle or scene, seem incapable of appreciating or
understanding the vampiric condition as being a real thing; to them,
it's a philosophy, lifestyle, outlook, spirituality or fashion
statement, and they are neither interested in the same concerns as of
real vampires, nor do they have the vampiric community's and real
vampires' best interests in mind -- if only because their OWN
interests, needs, and concerns are fundamentally different from --
and occasionally at odds with -- those of the real vampires. Try
mixing oil and water.

And that is the fundamental root of the irreconcilable problem.

- #Sanguinarius ( http://www.sanguinarius.org/~irc/ ).

Dal.net is half-dead; I have extreme difficulty getting on any
Dal.net irc servers, and even the Dal.net website was gone at one
point. I have decided to move channel #Sanguinarius to the
ForeverChat network ( http://www.foreverchat.net ). To connect to
that network, load your IRC program and type: /server
irc.foreverchat.net

I do not have plans to close #Sanguinarius on Dal.net -- IF Dal.net
manages to resolve it's problems. But because people cannot even
connect to dal.net at this time, I'm making the ForeverChat
#Sanguinarius channel the main one, at least until Dal.net can get
it's troubles resolved. My loyalty is to my channel, over and above
whatever network it may be found on; my loyalty to a network comes
after. ForeverChat.net is quite stable, from what I've seen, plus it
offers much more than Dal.net -- some of the options and capabilities
I am still learning about.

We have a bot, FangedBot, which iCeHoT was kind enough to put in the
channel for me. FangedBot is set up to be compatible with all the
functions of foreverchat.net. Plus, it's got a rudimentary form of
AI, which means that it learns from conversations, and will
eventually be able to spout things that make sense. :)

I invite you to come and try out the new server and channel location
and see how you like it. Again, to connect, type: /server
irc.foreverchat.net

Once you're connected, type: /join #Sanguinarius

Or, just log in from the bottom of any page on the main

Crimson Illuminations
This site was created for those who seek guidance. We realize
vampirism does not affect all in the same manner. Many are afraid to
share experiences or ask questions because of the ideals many
vampyric communities associate as to what is and isn't part of the
condition. Crimson Illuminations was created for like minds to gather
and discuss REAL vampirism, magick of all forms and WitchCraft. If
you wish to share your experience, knowledge or are simply curious,
we welcome you.

SANGUINARIUS SEEKING SUBMISSIONS:

I'm looking for articles on and for vampires / vampirism: blood,
psychic vampires, the Vampyre lifestyle, etc.; contributions
to "Problems Vampires Have", "Fun Vampires Have", the "Vampire Guide,
Tips, & Advice", -- send them in to Sanguinarius@...!
I'll give you credit and an email/page link if you want, just let me
know what to put and who to credit, and include the section it's for
in the Subject line.

If you have any news tidbits or announcements that you feel would be
a useful inclusion for the next newsletter (out next month), please
feel free to pass them on to me at Sang-News@... . I
can't possibly be aware of everything that is going on, or of
interest to my newsletter subscribers. Thanks!

The cutoff date for sending items to be included in the next edition
is two (2) days before the end of the month. Unless it is a special
announcement meant for immediate release. If you're planning an
event or gathering, please send in your information / announcement at
least three (3) months prior to the event date. This will allow
enough time for people to make plans and/or save up to attend after
the notice is released. (And don't forget to add it to the Vampiric
Community Calendar, too!)

If anybody is willing to help out with translating and mirroring
translated information from Sanguinarius: The Vampire Support Page,
please get in touch with me at Sanguinarius@... so we
can talk about this.
