Subject: NPPL revalidation: URGENT
Dear All,
If you have an NPPL, you may need to revalidate it by 30th June 2009 at the
latest.
Notably the NPPL SSEA, which previously had rolling validity requirements, has
been changed to a validity period of 24 months (see AIC 30/2008 released on
24/4/08).
In order to facilitate this change, a transition period from 1/2/08 until
30/6/09 was agreed, Within this period, all NPPL SSEA holders (with the
exception of those electing to revalidate by General Skills Test) must
revalidate as follows:
Such licence holders should present their log books TO AN EXAMINER with the
following evidence of class rating validity:
A minimum of 6 hours (4 hours as PIC) in the 12 months prior to logbook
presentation.
A 1 hour flight with an authorised instructor in the 24 months before the date
of logbook presentation.
Those licence holders who, before 31/1/2008, have exercised Microlight and.or
SLMG privileges under their SSEA rating must also produce evidence of having
completed the associated differences training on these classes of aeroplanes.
Please note the certificate of revalidation MUST be signed by an EXAMINER with a
24 month validity period from the date of signature stating "SSEA (Land) Class"
and the date of signature shall be included in the EXAMINER'S signature space.
NPPL microlight and SLMG Class rating holders are also being changed to a 24
month revalidity period, but are unlikely to be caught by this trap becuase
their previous validity period was 13 months and so have presumably been
revalidated since 1/2/2008. Please note however, that this also required the
signing of a Certificate of Revalidation by an examiner, NOT the signing of a
Certificate of Experience in the holders personal flying log book.
Are you still all with me? Probably not!
But the bottom line is that if you do not have a Certificate of Revalidation
signed by an EXAMINER since 1/2/2008, you had better organize it tomorrow.
Contact a convenient examiner ASAP eg Steve Maric, Alan Stevenson, Willie Devlin
(SSEA) or Colin MacKinnon (Microlight).
Sorry about the short notice but I only just realised myself!
Best wishes,
Graeme Park.
P.S. Examiner John Allen has kindly offered to help out any pilot in this
predicament. Contact him ASAP on 07769 690041

Hi Fergus,
There will be a NOTAM for the airfield from early afternoon. The air
display is on from 14.00hrs to 16.00hrs but there could be some model jets
flying from around 13.30hrs (not something you want to be close to).
If you are arriving in the morning you should be fine. Even if you arrive
in the middle of the display you will probably be allowed to land between
display items.
Look forward to seeing you.

Hi folks,
Firstly, thanks for all the help distributing the posters. There is still one
or two left so
please continue to help yourself.
My plea today is for strong men bursting with excess testosterone to lend a hand
on
Thursday evening. We need to erect a fence to delineate the crowd line and any
help at all
would be gratefully received.
We also need as many helpers as possible on the day of the event. The
airfield will be
closed for normal flying so the way to avoid paying at the gate is to come along
before 12
noon; don a yellow vest; and HELP.
On a more social note, there will be a BBQ for visiting pilots on Friday evening

everyone is invited so please feel free to come along.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Dear Dave,
You are correct. There is a need to come up with some money to keep Bute going-
but the estate want it to go to a local charity: Beachwatch Bute.
Bob Watson has had some discussions with the estate manager about the
practicalities of this and it seems it would be a good idea to have someone to
collect all the donations then give them from time to time (with appropriate
publicity) to the charity.
Sandy Cameron has volunteered to put up a notice about this at Bute and possibly
be the person to collect the donations. Perhaps it would be a good idea for the
Perth pilots to contribute this way.
I have forwarded this e-mail to both of them and asked then to contact you.
Please let me know if you do not hear from them.

Subject: [samd] Bute airstrip
Hi,
While at the Strathallan BBQ I learnt from Lawrie Hogan that the airstrip on
Bute may soon
be closed.
This would be a great shame as it is an ideal spot to stop for lunch. The
strip is quite a
distance from any residential area, which makes it safe, yet the hotel is no
more than a
10-minute walk. Personally I have landed there and even camped there a few
times, and
enjoyed the food served in the Kilchattan Hotel.
The strip is owned and maintained by the Mount Stuart estate (the home of the
Marquis of
Bute) and for years it has been used to airlift cases of medical emergency
from the island,
however in more recent times this has been done by helicopter so there is no
longer any
need for an airstrip.
The estate has now become aware that it is maintaining a strip purely for the
use and
enjoyment of visiting pilots and has decided to discontinue cutting the grass.
I was there
only last week and the strip is already showing signs of neglect, with the
grass the longest
I have ever seen it.
Lawrie has persuaded some of the pilots from Fife to contribute £50 each in
order to build
up a sum of money large enough to persuade the estate to continue with the
grass
cutting. He asked if I would approach the Perth pilots with the same aim in
mind, so I
need some feedback from you.
I appreciate the Fife guys visit Bute far more often than we do so perhaps you
feel £50 is a
bit steep but this is a strip that I would hate to see close so any
alternative suggestions
would be welcome.
Personally I wondered if introducing a landing fee would not be better ----
perhaps an
honesty box attached to the little hut, or even just inside the door of the
hotel? If I had
been charged a fiver for every time I've landed there I would already be due
them more
than £50.
Could we form a Bute visitors club with a membership fee, thus closing the
strip to anyone
not a member?
Should the SAC as a whole offer something?
I have to say I have worries about the lump sum idea ----- will they expect
this every
year; or every six months; or will it be a one-off payment; or in fact will
they agree to
accept anything at all?
As you see there is a lot to consider, the first of which being ---- are you
prepared to
give £50 (or even £25) to the Mount Stuart estate? Do you wish the strip to
stay open?
Do you have any other solution?
Give me some feedback please.

I guess this is more of a microlight issue, however some years ago I went into
Bute in a C150 on SAC flyout. Easiest way seems to
persuade the Estate to try a landing fee by honesty box (as used to happen on
Mull) and see if what they collect covers
grass-cutting. I suspect any other arrangement is just too complicated. Don't
think it's reasonable to expect them to provide any
facilities (unless usage goes up substantially).

Hello Dave and everyone,
Although I am no longer personally involved, living as I do in Thailand, I
was always very appreciative of the welcome I received at Bute, any time I
flew in. Peter Robertson always looked after us well, and often would do
fuel runs, or even sight seeing trips, for no reward. He was an electrician,
and a former employee of the estate. He loved "his" airstrip, and I suspect
they kept it open just to give him an excuse to get out of the house. I
don't know if he is still there, he was not so well the last few times I
visited: if he is still to the fore please pass on my, and Gill's, regards,
next time you visit. If he doesn't know who you are talking about, just say
"the opticians". I always made a point of passing on to him out-of-date
charts, etc., which he loved to receive.
My suggestion would be that the SAC as a club, or failing that, a group of
interested fliers, negotiate a deal with the estate to continue the use of
the runway. The SAC or group could then impose a landing fee if it were
deemed necessary. A condition of the deal should however include the
provision of a bothy and a toilet, and lighting for camping. The abuse of
the runway lights for camping etc was an issue that needed to be addressed!
P**ing in the ditch was not always a pleasurable experience for the distaff
side, and a shelter from the wind and somewhere to keep the flying suit and
radio dry would have been welcome.
I believe there is sufficient traffic there, which no one would know because
no log is kept, to ensure a degree of security and stability. The site is
essential to flexwing fliers as an alternate for many west coast and Irish
trips, and to lose it would be a tragedy.
Happy flying,
Alasdair.

Subject: [samd] Bute airstrip
Hi,
While at the Strathallan BBQ I learnt from Lawrie Hogan that the airstrip on
Bute may soon be closed.
This would be a great shame as it is an ideal spot to stop for lunch. The
strip is quite a
distance from any residential area, which makes it safe, yet the hotel is no
more than a
10-minute walk. Personally I have landed there and even camped there a
few times, and
enjoyed the food served in the Kilchattan Hotel.
The strip is owned and maintained by the Mount Stuart estate (the home of
the Marquis of
Bute) and for years it has been used to airlift cases of medical emergency
from the island, however in more recent times this has been done by
helicopter so there is no longer any
need for an airstrip.
The estate has now become aware that it is maintaining a strip purely for
the use and
enjoyment of visiting pilots and has decided to discontinue cutting the
grass. I was there
only last week and the strip is already showing signs of neglect, with the
grass the longest I have ever seen it.
Lawrie has persuaded some of the pilots from Fife to contribute £50 each in
order to build up a sum of money large enough to persuade the estate to
continue with the grass cutting. He asked if I would approach the Perth
pilots with the same aim in mind, so I need some feedback from you.
I appreciate the Fife guys visit Bute far more often than we do so perhaps
you feel £50 is a bit steep but this is a strip that I would hate to see
close so any alternative suggestions would be welcome.
Personally I wondered if introducing a landing fee would not be better ----
perhaps an
honesty box attached to the little hut, or even just inside the door of the
hotel? If I had
been charged a fiver for every time I've landed there I would already be due
them more than £50.
Could we form a Bute visitors club with a membership fee, thus closing the
