Forty Years ago Indra Devi wrote about His mysterious Divine Sport that once hastened her to Prasanthi Nilayam as wanted by Him...and how the Lord read her mind reciprocating to her prayers...Read on for yet another interesting snippet from His Story as published in the May, 1969 issue of Sanathana Sarathi.

The parting with Baba was easy. He had so entirely filled my being that i did not feel like being separated from Him by distance. One day, just before the starting of the Crusade for Light in Darkness at San Diego City, i was driving all by myself, from Los Angeles to Tecate, when all of a sudden, it started to drizzle. Normally, we never have rains in June. So i turned on the windshield wiper and continued, singing the Prasanthi Nilayam Bhajan in full voice. Suddenly, one of the wipers flew off with such force that one would infer it was torn off, by a strong hand.

"Bhagawan?" i wondered aloud, "Is anything wrong?" i went ahead, but, soon, was unable to continue, as the rain got stronger and i had to get off the freeway. (The freeways in America are a network of four or more lanes, built for motor traffic exclusively to connect one town to another. The speed limit on them is 65 miles per hour, but, 70 is still legal.) To find a gas station to replace the missing wiper “Madam,” exclaimed the attendant, after glancing at the front wheel, “you are lucky, because you could have met with a disastrous accident.” He was right. Driving with a punctured tire at the speed of 70 miles per hour would have ended in a catastrophe.

“Thank You, Bhagawan,” i said, silently, turning to Him. So, it was Your hand that tore off the wiper with such force that i could almost see You doing it.”

i very often speak to Him, when no one is around. This is one of the reasons I like to be alone, which is not always easy, with so many people around—students, visitors to our yoga center, secretaries, helpers. But, somehow, i always manage to slip away and be alone with Him, whose image is constantly on my lips, and whose voice rings constantly in my ears. Giridhara Gopala, is followed by Govinda Krishna Subrahmanyam and Syamasundara Madanmohana. i remember telling Him once, that Krishna charmed people with the tone of the flute, while He (Bhagawan) is charming them by the tone of His Voice.

Two months later, in August. i was, to my own surprise, again on the way to India! This unplanned trip was made, because the silver medallion Baba had given me was gone, in spite of the chain around my neck being intact. “Probably Sai Baba wants you to come," suggested my husband. "Probably," i agreed, and promptly booked the passage. After reaching Prasanthi Nilayam, I immediately told Baba about it. “You would not have come otherwise.” He smiled! “Will You then give it back to me, Bhagawan?” I asked. “Yes, Yes, Yes” He assured.

During my short stay at Prasanthi Nilayam, i started, at His wish, Yoga classes for the Patasahala boys, who turned out to be the best students i ever had. When the last lesson was over, we all sat around Baba and He gave me a ‘ring’ which He ‘took’ from the air. “The Satwaguna,” He said, pointing to the precious gemstones. Back in my room, i felt uneasy about it since i had given up wearing jewels, since 1938, when i started teaching Yoga. i felt i could wear a ring only if it had His image.

The next morning, the first thing Baba told me in the interview was "Give me the ring it is not right". Holding it up between two fingers, He blew on it three times, thereby transforming the many gems into a single diamond! We all sat speechless and enthralled. ‘In this you and you alone will see My image", He said. "Isn’t it what you wanted?" He asked.

i bowed to His Feet and thanked Him for it. Yet i wanted the medallion which i had come for. "This one?” He asked, holding it up in His Hand. i was overjoyed to get it back.

Prasanthi Nilayam is too small in size to be found on any map; but, it has become the biggest in meaning to millions of people, including myself. i even declined a flattering proposition to establish my own Yoga center, in 3 places in India; for, i could not well imagine myself staying in any other place, but Prasanthi Nilayam, or wherever Bhagawan might be. He has so completely filled my life that my first and last thought and every other one, in between are about Him. i speak of Him, on lecture platforms, at home, in classes or wherever i happen to be!

The young people in America are on cross-roads, searching, running away from homes, revolting, resorting to outbursts of violence, drugs and even suicide. They are desperate. There is no one to guide them. The San Diego State College which has 20,000 students has already sent an invitation to Bhagawan. Of late, many youths have become really interested in meditation, Yoga and Indian music. i know that Bhagawan would be the real answer to their quest, and to their problems.

Not only youngsters, every one needs Him, everywhere, especially, in America.

Thursday Message :

Two Gentlemen

Once two gentlemen came from Goa for taking darshan of Sai Baba, and prostrated themselves before him. Though both came together, Baba asked only one them to give Him Rs.15/- as Dakshina which was paid willingly. The other man voluntarily offered Rs. 35/-. This sum was rejected by Baba to the astonishment of all. Shama, who was present, asked Baba, "What is this? Both came together, one's Dakshina you accept, the other, though voluntarly paid, you refuse.

Why this distinction? Baba replied, "Shama, you know nothing. I take nothing from anybody. The Masjidmayi (The presiding Deity of the Masjid) calls for the debt, the donor pays it and becomes free. Have I any home, property or family to look after? I require nothing. I am ever free. Debt, enmity and murder have to be atoned for, there is not escape". Baba then continued in His characteristic way as follows:-

As first he was poor and took a vow to his God that he would pay his first month's salary if he got an appointment. He got one on Rs.15/- p.m. Then he steadily got promotions, from Rs.15/- he got Rs. 30, 60, 100, 200 and ultimately Rs.700/- per month. But in his prosperity he forgot clean the vow he took. The force of his karma has driven him here and I asked that amount (Rs.15/-) from him as Dakshina.

Another story, While wandering by the sea-side I came to a huge mansion and sat on its verandah.

The owner gave me a good reception and fed me sumptuously. He showed me a neat and clean place near a cupboard for sleeping. I slept there. While I was sound asleep, the man removed a literite slab and broke the wall entered in and scissored off all the money from my pocket. When I woke up, I found that Rs.30,000/- were stolen. I was greatly distressed and sat weeping and moaning. The money was in currency notes and I thought that the Brahmin had stolen it. I lost all interest in food and drink and sat for a fortnight on the verandah, bemoaning my loss. After the fortnight was over, a passing fakir saw me crying, and made enquiries regarding the cause of my sorrow. I told him everything.

He said, "If you act according to my bidding, you will recover your money; go to a fakir, I shall give his whereabouts, surrender yourself to him, he will get back your money; in the meanwhile give up your favourite food till you recover your money." I followed the fakir's advice and got my money. Then I left the Wada and went to the sea-shore. There was a steamer, but I could not get into it as it was crowded. There a good-natured peon interceded for me and I got in luckily. That brought me to another shore, where I caught a train and came to the Masjidmayi.

The story finished and Baba asked Shama to take the guests and arrange for their feeding. Then Shama took them home and fed them. At dinner, Shama said to the guests that Baba's story was rather mysterious, as He had never gone to the sea-side, never had any money (Rs.30,000/-), never travelled, never lost any money and never recovered it, and enquired whether they understood it and caught its significance. The guests were deeply moved and were shedding tears. In a choking voice they said that Baba was omniscient, infinite, the One (Para Brahma) without a second.

The story He gave out is exactly our story, What He spoke has already taken place in our case. How He knew this, is a wonder of wonders! We shall give all the details after the meals.

Then after the meals while they were chewing betel-leaves,the guests began to tell their stories. One of them said:-

"A hill-station on the ghats is my native place. I went to Goa to earn my living by securing a job. I took a vow to God Datta that if I got any service, I would offer Him my first month's salary. By His grace I got an appointment of Rs.15/- and then I got promotions as described by Baba. I did forget all about my vow. Baba has just reminded me of it in this way and recovered Rs. 15/- from me. It is not Dakshina as one may think it to be, but a repayment of an old debt and fulfillment of long forgotten vow".

Moral

Baba never, in fact, actually begged any money, nor allowed His Bhaktas to beg. He regarded money as a danger or bar to spiritual progress and did not allow His Bhaktas to fall into its clutches. Bhagat Mhalsapati, is an instance on tis point. He was very poor and could hardly make both ends meet. Baba never allowed him to make any money, nor gave him anything from the Dakshina amount. Once a kind and liberal merchant named Hansaraj gave a large amount of money to Mhalsapati in Baba's presence, but Baba did not allow him to accept it.

Then the second guest began his tale. "My Brahmin (cook) was serving me faithfully for 35 years. Unfortunately he fell into bad ways, his mind changed and he robbed me of my treasure. By removing a laterite slab from my wall where my cup-board is fixed, he came in while we were all asleep and carried away all my accumulated wealth, Rs. 30,000/- in currency notes.

I know not how Baba mentioned the exact amount. I sat crying day and night. My enquiries came to nothing. I spent a fortnight in great anxiety. As I sat on the verandah, sad and dejected, a passing fakir noted my condition and enquired of its cause, and I told him all about it. He told me that an Avalia by name Sai lives in Shirdi, Kopergaon Taluka. Make vow to Him and give up any food that you like best and say to Him mentally that 'I have given up eating that food till I take your darshan'. Then I took the vow and gave up eating rice and s0aid, "Baba, I will eat it after recovering my property and after taking your darshan".

Fifteen days passed after this. The Brahmin, of his own accord, came to me, returned my money and apologized, saying, "I went mad and acted thus; I now place my head on your feet, please forgive me". Thus everything ended well. The fakir that met me and helped me, was not seen again.

An intensive desire to see Sai Baba, whom the fakir pointed out to me, arose in my mind. I thought that the fakir who came all the way to my house was no other than Sai Baba. Would He, who saw me and helped me to get my lost money ever covet to get Rs.35/-? On the contrary without expecting anything from us, He always tries His best to lead us on the path of spiritual progress.

I was overjoyed when I recovered my stolen property and being infatuated, I forgot all about my vow. Then when I was at Colaba, one night I saw Sai Baba in my dream. This reminded me of my promised visit to Shirdi. I went to Goa and from there wanted to start for Shirdi, by taking a steamer to Bombay , en route. But when I came to the harbour, I found that the steamer was crowded and there was no place. The captain did not allow me, but on the intercession of a peon, who was stranger to me, I was allowed to get into the steamer which brought me to Bombay . From there, I got in the train and came here. Surely I think that Baba is all-pervading and all-knowing. What are we and where is our home?

How great our good fortune that Baba got back our money and drew us here to Himself? You Shirdi folk must be infinitely superior and more fortunate than we; for Baba has played, laughed, talked and lived with you for so many years. I think that your store of good merits must be infinite, for it attracted Baba into Shirdi. Sai is our Datta. He ordered the vow. He gave me a seat in the steamer and brought me here and thus gave proof of His omniscience and omnipotence".

Mrs. Aurangabadkar

A lady from Sholapur , wife of Sakharam Aurangabadkar had no issue during the long period of 27 years. She had made a number of vows of Gods and Goddesses for an issue, but was not successful. She then became almost hopeless. To make a last attempt in this matter, she came to Shirdi with her step-son Vishwanath and stayed there for two months, serving Baba. Whenever she went to the Masjid, she found it full and Baba surrounded by devotees. She wanted to see Baba alone, fall at His feet and open her heart and pray for an issue, but she got no suitable opportunity.

Ultimately she requested Shama to intercede with Baba for her when He was alone. Shama said to her that Baba's Darbar was open, still he would try for her and that the Lord might bless her. He asked her to sit ready with a cocoa-nut and joss-sticks on the open courtyard at the time of Baba's meals and that when he beckoned to her, she should come up.

One day after dinner, Shama was rubbing Baba's wet hands with a towel when the latter pinched Shama's cheek. Shama feigning anger said, "Deva, is it proper for you to pinch me like this? We don't want such a mischievous God who pinches us thus. Are we Your dependents, is this the fruit of our intimacy?" Baba replied, "Oh Shama, during the 72 generations that you were with me, I never pinched you till now and now you resent my touching you". Shama, "We want a God that will give us ever kisses and sweets to eat; we do not want any respect from You, or heaven, balloon etc. Let our faith unto Your Feet be ever wide-awake". Baba, "Yes, I have indeed come for that. I have been feeding and nursing you and have got love and affection for you".

Then Baba went up and took his seat. Shama beckoned to the lady. She came up, bowed and presented the cocoa-nut and joss-sticks. Baba shook the cocoa-nut which was dry. The Kernal within rolled and made a noise. Baba said, "Shama, this is rolling, see what it says". Shama, "The woman prays that a child might be similarly rolling and quickening in the womb. So give her the cocoa-nut with Your blessings".

Baba, "Will the coconut give her any issue? How people are foolish and fancy such things!"

Shama, "I know the power of Your word and blessing. Your word will give her a string or series of children. You are wrangling and not giving real blessing".

The parley went on for a while. Baba repeatedly ordering to break the coconut and Shama pleading for the gift of the unbroken fruit to the lady. Finally Baba yielded and said, "She will have an issue". "When?" asked Shama. "In 12 months" was the reply. The cocoa-nut was therefore broken into two part, one was eaten by the two, the other was given to the lady.

The Shama turned up to the lady and said, "Dear madam, you are a witness to my words. If within 12 months you do not get any issue, I will break a cocoa-nut against this Deva's head and drive him out of this Masjid. If I fail in this, I will not call myself Madhav. You will soon realize what I say".

She delivered a son in one year's time and the son was brought to Baba in his fifth month. Both husband and wife, prostrated themselves before Baba and the grateful father (Mr. Aurangabadkar) paid a sum of Rs.500/- which was spent in constructing a shed for Baba's house "Shyamakarna.

We just have to wait...for a month or so! ;.(

www.saibabaofindia.com is facing Hacker's attack  - malware issue - the site is clean and doesn't harm your computer.  Just click "ignore warning" in browsers window.  The warning is simply a precautionary measure by search engines and browsers etc.  If a site is attacked with malware/hacker etc. then the hacked  site must  go thru a review before the warning is removed from browsers and search engine sites e.g. Google etc.. We just have to wait...for a month or so! ;.(

Sai On Jyothi (Light) Meditation

"As regards the technique of meditation, different teachers and trainers give different forms of advice. But I shall give you now the most universal and the most effective form. This is the very first step in spiritual discipline. At first, set a few minutes every day for meditation, and extend the time as you feel the bliss that you get.

"Let it be in the hours before dawn. This is preferable because the body is refreshed after sleep, and the dealings of daytime will not yet have impinged on you. Have a lamp or a candle before you with an open, steady, and straight flame. Sit in front of the candle in the lotus posture or any other comfortable sitting position. Look on the flame steadily for some time, and closing your eyes try to feel the flame inside you between your eyebrows. Let it slide down into the lotus of your heart, illuminating the path. When it enters the heart, imagine that the petals of the lotus open out by one, bathing every thought, feeling, and emotion in the light and so removing darkness from them. There is no space for darkness to hide. The light of the flame becomes wider and brighter. Let it pervade your limbs. Now those limbs can never indulge in dark, suspicious, and wicked activities; they have become instruments of light and love.

As the light reaches up to the tongue, falsehood vanishes from it. Let it rise up to the eyes and the ears and destroy all the dark desires that infest them and which lead you to perverse sights and childish conversation. Let your head be surcharged with light and all wicked thoughts will flee therefrom. Imagine that the light is in you more and more intensely. Let it shine all around you and let it spread from you in ever widening circles, taking in your loved ones, your kith and kin, your friends and companions, your enemies and rivals, strangers, all living beings, the entire world.

"Since the light illumines all the senses every day so deeply and so systematically, a time will soon come when you can no more relish dark and evil sights, yearn for dark and sinister tales, crave for base, harmful, deadening toxic food and drink, handle dirty demeaning things, approach places of ill-fame and injury, or frame evil designs against anyone at any time. Stay on in that thrill of witnessing the light everywhere. If you are adoring God in any form now, try to visualize that form in the all-pervasive light. For Light is God; God is Light.

"Practice this meditation as I have advised regularly every day. At other times repeat the name of God (any Name fragrant with any of His many Majesties), always taking care to be conscious of His might, mercy, and munificence."

(Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 10)

Sai On Breath Meditation (so-hum meditation)

In the breath meditation, one gently focuses attention on one's breathing and repeats "Soooo" with the inhalation and "Hummm" with the exhalation.

Very recently, a “Group of 120” from the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield, Bangalore set out on a two day pilgrimage to Prasanthi Nilayam, not on its own, but, at the invitation of Bhagawan Himself!…And they were His guests in Prasanthi Nilayam.  How this pilgrimage turned out to become a Mind and Soul Refresher Course for this group from Whitefield? ...a senior member in the group writes all about the great good fortune and the Unique Graciousness of Beloved Bhagawan...

When you observe a child at close quarters, you are able to see a number of attitudes and qualities that clearly separates him from an adult; his complete sense of trust in those around him, a willingness to take everything as it comes, and implicit faith that he will always be granted his demands.

Every one of us who has been chosen by our beloved Bhagawan to be a part of His global family starts our journey on the Sai path with attitudes and beliefs similar to that child’s. We trust Bhagawan will always be there for us. We believe that we will always have the strength to take everything in our stride for He is with us. And we know that He will grant us our wishes. This is especially true of those who are handpicked by the Lord to be a direct instrument in His Divine mission.

With the passage of time, and with many experiences along the way, we mature spiritually. We begin to value Bhagawan and His presence in our lives with increasing intensity. However, as we “grow” and spend more time in His proximity [physical and otherwise], one of few things often happens: we either begin to take the Lord for granted and expect Him to do our bidding with no effort on our part; or, we begin to believe that in order to continue being deserving of His grace and to ensure that we remain “the chosen ones”, we will have to do all the “right things” at the right times, and keep Him happy through our worldly actions – a negotiation of sorts, if you will! Or even better – we begin to feel that we have received all that we possibly could have and we need to train ourselves to expect nothing more from Him.

As these attitudes and misconceptions grow, Bhagawan one fine day decides, “These precious devotees of mine need a desperate refresher! I must do something that completely bowls them over, frees them of their illogical thoughts, and gives them the opportunity to experience being connected with their Highest Selves!” It is my belief that a similar thought made Him to Will  to invite – that’s right, INVITE – the staff [and their families] working in Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield, Bangalore to Prasanthi Nilayam, for a 2-day visit on the 14th and 15th of November 2009. I was fortunate to be a part of this Divinely orchestrated visit.

When God takes the initiative to organize something, one can but watch and marvel. Here’s what Bhagawan did! He organized accommodation free of cost for all invitees inside the Ashram – a feat in itself, since He had to accommodate 120 people during the period leading up to His 84th birthday when the Ashram is normally bursting at the seams with devotees! He also ensured that a feast of gargantuan proportions was organized for all the invitees – 4 times a day! And to add a touch of class, we were smilingly received by sevadals with Welcome placards in their hands and SaiRam on their lips every time we went to the dining hall for a meal. The food was prepared painstakingly – ensuring quality and quantity were equivalent to what one would expect at a palace! The sevadals who served us the food were like Mother Easwaramma and the gopikas combined – heaping our plates with goodies and not permitting us to clean our own plates after we had partaken of the meal!

All of us were moved by this reception and treatment – without realizing that this was but a drop in the ocean of Grace Bhagawan was planning to drown us in!

Puttaparthi has been transformed from a little village in the middle of nowhere to a hub of learning, technological initiatives and a sight-seeing paradise of global proportions in recent years. Bhagawan decided that the pilgrims should experience the varied flavours of Prasanti Nilayam. He got His ex-students of His holy institute – to arrange for the entire group to visit the Planetarium and the Super Specialty Hospital on day 1 and to the Chaitanya Jyothi Museum on day 2. Every visit enriched our minds and gladdened our hearts as we got to witness the seamless weaving of science, art and spirituality at their best. The hand of Bhagawan was evident in every exhibit, every slide show, every interaction and every tour.

During our visit to the Planetarium, we were blessed to listen to an hour long talk by Sri. B N Narasimha Murthy garu, Warden, Brindavan Campus of the Sri Sathya Sai University. He reiterated that we – the staff and family from Bhagawan’s organization – belong to Bhagawan’s inner circle. It is impossible to capture the essence of what he spoke in writing, but suffice it to say that his talk left every heart in the audience uplifted and craving for more pearls of Bhagawan’s loving teachings. He helped us to understand that the world and this treacherous thing called Maya must not mislead us. Complete surrender at the Lord’s Feet and implicit trust in His words, actions and promises would keep us tuned to our true mission in life – that of union with the Divine.

Later that evening, we were again fortunate to listen to another speaker – the Pied Piper of Prasanthi Nilayam – Prof. Anil Kumar. In His inimitable style, and words laced with humour, He took us to surreal levels of appreciating the great good fortune bestowed on all of us for being the chosen ones in the Lord’s mission. He helped us appreciate the extent to which Bhagawan is involved in every one of our daily tasks, and how He takes care of our EVERY need. All we need do is remember – that He is with us.

The highlight of the trip however, occurred on the afternoon of 14th November. We were assembled for the tea and snacks session when we received an urgent message…Bhagawan had sent instructions for all of us to assemble in the Mandir at 3:45 p.m. The joy of expectation, hope and dizzying ecstasy was palpable. HE was going to speak to us! Little did we know what was actually in store.

We seated ourselves in the Mandir at 3:45 p.m. and waited with bated breath for an hour and 5 minutes. At precisely 4:50 p.m., strains of soulful music announced His arrival. At 5 minutes to 5:00 p.m., the Lord arrived in our midst!

What followed was an hour of close interactions, paadanamaskaars, miracles and wish-fulfilment. Bhagawan went close to every member seated in the hall, permitted most to take namaskaar, spoke to many individuals, couples and families, named 2 tiny tots, and reveled in embracing all of us in His warmth. The crowning glory was when He materialised a sparkling diamond ring for a member of His dedicated work force. Bhagawan lovingly placed the ring on this person’s ring finger, and then proceeded to admire His own handiwork!

To say that all of this left us speechless would be an understatement. We were enraptured! We cried, we laughed; we watched, we waited; we expected and were not disappointed; and we didn’t expect, and were blessed with plenty! If ever there was a rollercoaster of feelings underlined by bliss – that experience was IT!

One often wonders what it would take to remain God’s favourite devotee. This weekend gave me my answer. We needn’t try to be anything. We just need to believe that our every moment is guided and inspired by Him; we only have to stay centred on the faith that HE knows it all; we merely have to do what we must to the best of our God-given talents…and when we least expect it, the Master of our family will invite us – the members of His Inner Circle – to spend a weekend of blissful plenty with Him, at our ancestral Abode!!

With love and light

One has read the scriptures and envisioned the interactions between the Pandavas and Lord Krsna. The welcome and the hospitality the Jadhavs so lovingly placed at the Divine Lotus Feet of Beloved Bhagawan, the self same Krsna who now walks amidst us in flaming orange elegance, was perhaps akin to that.  What took place in Dwapara Yuga and that which our finite mind is unable to fathom, we were fortunate enough to witness right before our very eyes and cherish in our hearts forever…

Being a part of His Divine entourage, watching the Lord from close quarters, is a special privilege that befell on a selected group from Prasanthi Nilayam..Read on for one more reminiscence from one of the privileged student who travelled with Bhagawan. (With inputs from Julie and Nupur Choudhuri, Pune)

The snake wound round the neck of Lord Shiva looks mischievously at its natural predator, the eagle and asks sarcastically, “Brother Garuda, How are you these days?” “As long as each of us stays in our designated places, all will be fine”, counsels Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. This is the advice of Garuda. It is pregnant with meaning. – Poet Kannadasan

The love of devotees for Bhagawan is one of such expansiveness that it encompasses His entire entourage.  What we thought of as a stopover on the way to Mumbai, turned out to be a lesson in devotion, service and humility. The Hadshi visit, was a true eye-opener. A remote hillock surrounded by bigger hills, it was a sleepy village still seeped in rustic innocence sandwiched between Pune and Lonavala.

But like a giant woken from his slumber, Hadshi become the hub of activity before the arrival of Bhagawan. Temporary structures sprung up in no time at precisely planned locations. There was a place allotted for every person and every task. Huge structures were constructed to house the thousands of devotees for their free meals.

More than 6,000 people could dine at a time. Up to 30,000 dined for every food session during Bhagawan’s visit. Sprawling grounds which could seat 50,000 was filled to capacity. Huge areas were allocated for parking purposes. Hundreds of volunteers coordinated all these activities.  The hosts shrank from recognition, hid in obscurity and worked nonstop with well being of Bhagawan and His guests in their mind all the time. An extremely pleased Lord blessed them profusely for their yeoman service.

The Jadhavs, the whole family, are blessed with pure devotion that clearly touched our loving Lord. Their humility is a lesson in itself, for it pleased Bhagawan. Their humble invitation to Beloved Bhagawan to visit Sri Sathya Sai Panduranga Kshetra, so named by Bhagawan Himself, won His sweet approval to grace and honour to  the soil of Maharashtra, that many Saints of renown have treaded and blessed in  the past.

Their thoughtfulness, their selfless actions, their unassuming ways while preparing for the Divine visit and during Bhagwan’s stay at SSSPK, was definitely noticed by Bhagawan and He blessed them profusely for the same. So many were involved in sprucing up this most sylvan surrounding for the Lord’s visit and the thousands that would gather for Darshan. All were looked after with utmost respect and loving care. This continued during the Divine visit. And is happening even now, as visitors stream in to SSSPK since it has been rendered most sacred by the touch of the Lord’s Feet…

It is apparent that what they experienced no words can express. For in times such as these feelings overcome words. Yet this is how Mr Shivajirao Jadhav conveyed his feelings and deep felt gratitude when he spoke.

Mr Jadhav said that his joy knew no bounds when Beloved Swami accepted their humble invitation to come to SSSPK. All their prayers and wishes had definitely been lovingly fulfilled by Bhagwan, who had so graciously given them a thousand fold more than what they had asked for. They couldn’t ask for more.

Since Bhagawan’s departure from the Kshetra, their whole family was reliving this dream visit by watching VCDs of these divine moments all through their waking moments. The only desire the entire family is left with now, is that Beloved Bhagwan should visit SSSPK every year for at least a month and grant them the grace and good fortune to serve Him ever more.

Mr Jadhav spoke as he felt. Now it is time for us all to show our gratitude for the loving hospitality he extended to all making  each and every one feel ever so welcome and a part of one big family that is growing and uniting people all over the globe – the Sai family. A universal brotherhood under the fatherhood of God.

To talk about the Bal Vikas...They were eagerly awaiting their Beloved Lord’s darshan. The Bal Vikas gurus arranged for buses to transported the children to Hadshi. They were all prepared to welcome Bhagawan with colourful flags and pom-poms! Some carried plates containing flower petals to worship their Beloved Guru, while others displayed placards comprising Sai Ishwar Ashtakam, saluting the Jagat Guru. Some even displayed His teachings in Telugu, Marathi and English.
A few girls were clad in traditional  Navari sarees and carried a kalash, Tulsi Vrindavan, flowers etc. A few boys dressed up as saints and Maharashtra’s brave freedom fighters.
The whole atmosphere was charged and all of them waited for the moment of Swami’s arrival. The enthusiasm of the children, and their glowing and smiling faces depicted were then graciously reciprocated by the Lord as He made His car stop, and He Himself lowered the window-pane and, raising both His Hands, blessed all His Bal Vikas children. Such was the love and affection He showered on them.
Every child had tears of joy in his/her eyes. When asked how they felt, each one said that Bhagawan looked directly at them, filling their hearts with joy and deep love…
There are so many devotees who yearn for Darshan, Sparshan and Sambhashan but cannot do so due to various reasons – old age, infirmities, finance, etc. but the all knowing Lord finds a way to delight all. The heart is overwhelmed that our sweet Lord so graciously accepted Mr Shivajirao Jadhav’s invitation, an offering straight from the heart .
Like frogs in a well, we often do not realise the value of the company of Bhagawan when in Prasanthi Nilayam. It is when we have the extremely blessed opportunity to travel with Him, do we understand the yearning and love of many a devotee across borders and languages. These devotees had put in unstinted efforts and made elaborate arrangements to make the Divine visit a grand success. It was a visit which humbled us to our very being, elevated our spirits with gratitude and melted our hearts with Love.

There were programmes by prominent musicians including Kavita Krishnamurthy, Nitin Mukesh and Sapna Mukherjee and also another very interesting programme by 5 little children entitled Little Champs. It was surprising to see how these little children were able to handle such huge crowds with complete élan. Bhagawan was extremely happy with the programme and kept appreciating the fact that they were completely uninhibited and let the meaning of the songs control their gestures.

And then there was Mumbai:

In the last few visits of Bhagawan to Mumbai, the surging crowds could not be accommodated in Dharmakshetra. Hence Bhagawan blessed the organisers to arrange Darshan in 3 different sprawling grounds and stadiums situated at different parts of Mumbai. Going as a part of Bhagawan’s convoy, we had a taste of the Mumbai traffic but were spared the whole course, thanks to the changing green lights.

The company of the Lord opens all roads. On the 31st of October, Bhagawan granted Darshan in NSE complex in Goregaon, Mumbai. We were given the privilege to sit on the stage behind Bhagawan. Famous artistes of Mumbai were sitting in front of Bhagawan almost like small children before team selection in a game of football vying for a chance.

We spotted Pandit Shivakumar Sharma, Sri Rahul Sharma, Sri Hariharan and Sri Kunal Ganjawala to name a few. But, Sonu Nigam was the pick of the lot, as Bhagawan permitted and blessed him and his accompanying artistes to perform. Sonu Nigam started his performance with “Sai Baba Bolo...” and held the attention of the audience till the end. But even in the midst of all these famous artistes, Bhagawan was enquiring when His students were going to perform and the organisers replied that they had reserved the CCI grounds for the programme.

The next day morning began with a meeting of Bankers and Industrialists with Bhagawan. The same dignified gentlemen who were used to giving talks on sophisticated topics changed into small children the moment Bhagawan entered the hall. Each of them stretching out to reach Swami’s feet and praying for a glimpse and a smile. This only reaffirmed that we are all children in the presence of God. It was a humbling experience for all of us. The Chief Minister then invited Bhagawan to his residence and also most of his guests and students personally.

After the morning Darshan and visit to CM’s residence, Bhagawan gave Darshan in the CCI grounds where the students were to perform. Bhagawan sat through the programme enjoying every bit of it, and blessed all the participants profusely. Even when the tens of thousands assembled in the grounds saw Bhagawan as their only property, here was Bhagawan beaming at the people He considered "His Property". Ha, the privilege of being His Student!

With love and light

Sairam,
A santoor usually has a thick string in the beginning and then several triple strings (or triads) after that.  You may want to tune it as follows:
Using your keyboard, tune the thick string to one octave lower than middle C (or C# if you like since that is the tradition for most Indian instruments).  This will be your main scale for the rest of the instrument.  Now go to the first set of 3 strings (usually placed so that you will strike them with the right hand), and tune them all to middle C (or again C#).

Now let's say you picked C for the thick string as well as the first triad.  The next triad will have to be played, as you know, with the left hand.  Tune this to C# (one half note higher than middle C).  Now the following triad (for the right hand) should be tuned to D (two half notes higher than middle C).  THe next (left hand) triad should be tuned to D# and so on...until you have tuned all the strings.
Please note:  Santoor strings take some time to settle down and hold their tuning.  After you have tuned the entire instrument you may have to double check all the strings again, starting with the thick string.  Truly a long process.  But be patient.  Once the tuning stabilises, it will stay that way for a long time...

Allah Malik - Sab ka Malik Ek

Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the five pillars of Islam. Hajj was made obligatory in the 9th year of Hijra. The Holy Prophet sent off 300 Muslims under the leadership of Hazrat Abubakr Siddique (may Allah be pleased with him) to Mecca so that they could perform Hajj. That was the year when it was banned for the Mushrikeen (those who associate partners with Allah) to enter Ka’ba. It was also made unlawful to perform Tawaaf (circling of Ka’ba) with naked body.

The following year, 10th Hijra, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) announced a head of time he himself would perform Hajj that year. He led tens of thousands of Muslims to Hajj that year and demonstrated to Muslims how to perform all the rites and rituals of the Hajj. This Hajj is known in history as Hajjatul Wida’ or Farewell Pilgrimage because this proved to be the last Hajj the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) performed. At the end of this farewell pilgrimage, the divine revelation that had started some 22 years ago came to an end with the following verse of Surah Al-Maidah:

“This day have I completed My commandments for you, and have brought to its fullness the favor that I have bestowed upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion”

.Hajj is an act of worship just like Salat (five daily prayers) and Sawm (fasting in the month of Ramadan). Muslims from all over the world gather in Mecca in the last month of Muslim calendar and worship Allah. Hajj is a special worship that lasts for several days. This is an occasion that brings Muslims of all countries, colors, and races to one place – the Ka’ba. This is a unique opportunity of worshipping Allah collectively in a large gathering at one place.c

  2.  Significance & Philosophy of hajj
Every nation and society has a center of unity where they get together to worship God. They see prosperity and culture as relics of unity. People of the society get to know each other and understand each other’s difficulties. They form a unified front to remove these difficulties and achieve their goals. Allah says in the Holy Quran: “And to every people We appointed rites of sacrifice, that they might mention the name of Allah…” (22:34)

With this idea, Hajj has been made a pinnacle of worship in order that Muslims who gather to perform Hajj can praise their Lord and Master, be thankful for His blessings, and humbly pray to Him for the removal of their difficulties. Muslims living in various parts of the world get to know each other, lay the foundation of social culture, give advice to each other, and provide opportunity for collective struggle.

An adult Muslim of a sane mind, an able body and having means to bear the expenses must perform this act of worship once in his/her lifetime. There should be peace on the way to Mecca and there should be no hindrance or restriction in traveling to Mecca. Hajj is not obligatory for children, the sick, and those who are unable to bear the expenses for Hajj.

  4.   What are the Timings of Hajj (Pilgrimage)
There are specific months for performing the Hajj and are called “Months of Pilgrimage.” These three Islamic months are Shawwal, Ze-Qa’d and Dul-Hajj. During these three “Months of Hajj”, one prepares for the pilgrimage, attains good morals, and completes other physical conditions for the pilgrimage. All the essential duties of the pilgrimage have to be completed between 8th and the 13th day of Dul-Hajj. Additional tawaaf  (circling around the Ka’ba), however, may be performed until the end of the month of Dul-Hajj.

  5.   Pillars of Hajj
There are three basic pillars for performing Hajj:

1.To enter into state of “Ihram” and have the intention to perform the pilgrimage.

2.To stay at the field of “Arafat” on the ninth of Dul-Hajj If someone cannot go to the field of Arafat even for a short time then his/her pilgrimage will not be complete. He/she has to perform the pilgrimage again the following year.

3.Additional circling of the “Ka’ba” that is done after the stay at the field of “Arafat” and performed from the tenth to the end of the month.

  A.   Departure From Home
A Muslim must be mindful of his/her duties towards family and fellow human beings. A Muslim who intends to perform Hajj must make sure, before departing for Hajj that his family is provided for during the period he is away for the Hajj. He should pay up his debt and seek forgiveness from fellow human being whom he might have caused harm in the past. He should be diligent in observing Salat (five daily prayers) and Sawm (fasting) in the month of Ramadhan as well as carrying out other religious obligations. He must shun all arrogance and exhibit a character of modesty and humbleness. He must not use unlawfully acquired money or unlawful means to perform Hajj. He should seek sincere repentance from Allah of all his past sins. In short, one should depart for Hajj just like one would wish to depart from this world.

One should spend some money in charity as well. A woman is not allowed to perform Hajj alone and must be accompanied by an adult Muslim Mahram (father, husband, son or brother etc.)

One should say two Rakat Nafl (supererogatory) prayer before leaving home for Hajj.
  B.  Ihram at Miqat
When one reaches “Miqat” (any one of the appointed places in Mecca where pilgrims make a vow of pilgrimage) one must perform ablution or take a bath, use perfume, and put on two clean, unstitched, preferably white, pieces of cloth. This pair of clothing is called Ihram. One sheet should be wrapped around the lower part of the body and the other sheet around the upper body; the head should not be covered. Women can perform pilgrimage in the cloths they are wearing. Under normal circumstances a woman’s face should not be covered unless she comes face to face with a stranger and she has to conceal herself. During the five days of Hajj, all Muslims engaged in this worship must remain in this same simple dress. As soon as a pilgrim puts on Ihram and declares his intention to perform Hajj, he/she enters into the state of Ihram and his/her Hajj begins.
  C.   Talbiyah
After putting on the Ihram, men and women offer two Raka’ts of Nafl (supererogatory) prayer followed by recitation of their “intention” and saying the following words:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik; La Shareeka-laka Labbaik; Innalhamda wan-na’mata-laka wal-mulka Lashreeka-laka"
Translation:
“Here I am, O Allah! Here I am in Thy August presence; there is no associate with Thee, here am I; surely all praise is Thine and all favors are Thine and the kingdom is Thine, there is no associate with Thee.”
These words are recited in Arabic and called “Talbiyah”. These words are an essential part of the state of Ihram and Ihram will not complete without reciting these words. After saying Talbiyah pilgrim is ready to fulfill his obligation of Hajj and is required to fulfill all the conditions laid down for Hajj. While one is in the state of Ihram it is strictly forbidden to engage in foul talk, sexual conduct, arguments, or enter into a war. Allah says in the Holy Quran: “ …so whoever determines to perform the Pilgrimage in these months, should remember that there is to be no foul talk, nor any transgression, nor any quarreling during Pilgrimage. …” (2:198)
  D.  Entering Masjid-el-Haram
After reaching Mecca, one should head straight to Ka’aba that is situated in bounds of Masjid-el-Haram and perform Tawaaf. It is said that when one has his/her first glance at Ka’aba, whatever prayers one makes is granted.
  E.   Istlam (Kissing the Hajr-e-Aswad)
The act of kissing the Hajr-e-Aswad (Black Stone) is called Istlam. While kissing the Hajr-e-Aswad, ones hands should be on the wall of the Ka’ba in the same position as when one performs a Sajdah (prostration) during a prayer. If it is not possible to kiss the Hajr-e-Aswad, it is permissible just touch it with a hand and if that is not possible the just point to the Hajr-e-Aswad and blow a kiss to it.
  F.   Tawaaf (Circling of ka’ba)
After performing Istlam (kissing the Hajr-e-Aswad) as described above, a pilgrim should perform Tawaaf of Ka’ba. Tawaaf is performed by going around Ka’ba seven times keeping the Ka’ba on left hand side (counter clock-wise). Istlam should be performed during each circle. It is also permitted to perform Istlam of Rukun-e-Yemeni (Pillar of Yemen). The seventh circle ends at the Hajr-e-Aswad.
  G.   Nawafal at Muqam-e-Ibrahim
After completing the Tawaaf, the pilgrim should move to the Muqam-e-Ibrahim (Place of Ibrahim. At this place one should offer two Rakats of prayer while facing Ka’ba.
  H.   Sa’ee (Running between Safa’ and Marwah)
Allah the Exalted has said the Holy Quran:

“Surely, Al-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the Signs of Allah. It is, therefore, no sin for him who is on pilgrimage to the House, or performs Umra, to go round the two. And whoso does good beyond what is obligatory, surely then, Allah is Appreciating, All-Knowing.” (2:159)

After praying two Rakats of prayer at Muqam-e-Ibrahim, the pilgrim then moves to “Safa”. At this place, he should face towards Ka’ba and recite Durood, Takbir and Talbiyah. The he should walk briskly towards Marwah and recite the same at Marwah. This counts as one circuit. Now one should move to Safa’ and repeat the prayers. One should complete seven circuits between Safa’ and Marwah. These circuits are called Sa’ee.

After performing the circuits between Safa’ and Marwah, one is free to move about and go to a resting place.
  I.   Arriving at Mina
On 8th day of Dul-Hajj the pilgrims reach at Mina early in the morning after performing Tawaaf-Qudoom. A pilgrim offers Duhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha’ prayers at Mina and camp there for the night.
  J.   Arriving at Arafat
On 9th day of Dul-Hajj, after offering Fajr prayer, a pilgrim should move to Arafat. Stay at Arafat is called Waqoof and is the most important part of Hajj. Without this, Hajj cannot be considered complete. If someone misses Waqoof, he should perform Hajj the following year. One listens to the sermon at the plane of Arafat and offers combined Zuhr and Asr prayers. One should stay at Arafat till sunset (Maghrib).
  K.   Arriving at Muzdalifah
One leaves Arafat after sunset and reaches Muzdalifah in the evening of 9th Dul-Hajj. Combined Maghrib and Isha’ prayers are offered at Muzdalifah. The pilgrims spend the night at Muzdalifah.
  L.   Departure from Muzdalifah
On the 10th day of Dul-Hajj the pilgrims offer their Fajr prayer as early in the morning as possible. After the Fajr prayer a pilgrim leaves Muzdalifah and arrive at Mina. On the way to Mina one should pick up seventy small stones. As soon as he reaches Mina, he should cast seven stones at Jumrah-tul-Aqba. This act of throwing stones is called Rami. With the throwing of the first stone the requirement to repeatedly recite Talbiyah is lifted. If the pilgrim intends to sacrifice an animal then he should do that after casting stones ad Jumrah-tul-Aqba. After offering the sacrifices a male pilgrim should have his head shaven and female pilgrims are required to cut a small part of her hair. Femle pilgrims are not permitted to have their heads shaven. After the hair cut one can remove the Ihram and may now wear regular cloths.
  M.  Return to Mecca after sacrifice and hair cut. Perform Taawaf-e-Afaza
After the removal of Ihram the pilgrim is required to return to Mecca to perform another circuit of the Ka’ba. This particular circuit is called Tawaaf-e-Afaza (additional circuit) and is an essential part of the pilgrimage. After this circuit a pilgrim is permitted to return to normal life and all those lawful things that were forbidden are now allowed again.
  N.   Return to Mina after Tawaf-e-Afaza
After this additional circuit, the pilgrim should return to Mina and stay there for three days. During the stay at Mina on 11th, 12th and 13th day of Dul-Hajj the pilgrim cast seven stones on each of the Jumrah in the following order: Jumrah-tul-Oola, Jamrah-tul-Wusta, and Juramh-tul-Aqba. It is permitted not to cast stones on the third day.
  O.   Return to Ka’ba and Farewell
On the 12th or the 13th day of Dul-Hajj, the pilgrim returns to the Ka’ba and perform a final circuit. This circuit is called Tawaf-al-Sadr or Tawaf-al-Wida (parting or farewell circuit). After this last circuit, the pilgrim should drink water from Zumzum, kiss the threshold of the door of the Ka’ba, and pray to Allah for forgiveness. He should leave the Ka’ba walking backwards, looking at it the last time, and saying farewell.

  7.   Prohibitions During the Pilgrimage
It is forbidden to have a hair cut during Hajj or to wear sewn clothes. Pilgrims should offer Fidya (redemption) if he has to wear sewn clothes or have to shave his head due to illness or lice.

Hunting is forbidden during the pilgrimage days. If the pilgrim hunts during these days then he has to offer the sacrifice of one animal. If he has hunted deer then a lamb should be sacrificed and of ostrich is hunted then camel should be sacrificed. If one cannot offer a sacrifice the he should feed six poor people and if that is not possible the he should fast for three days. Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“O ye who believe! Kill not game while you are in a state of pilgrimage. And whoso amongst you kills it intentionally, its compensation is a quadruped like unto that which he has killed, as determined by two just men from among you, the dame to be brought as an offering to the Ka’ba; or as an expiation he shall have to feed a number of poor persons, or fast an equivalent number of days, so that he may taste the penalty of his deed. As for the past, Allah forgives it; but whoso reverts to it, Allah will punish him for his offense. And Allah is Mighty, Lord of retribution.

The game of the sea and the eating thereof have been made lawful for you as a provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is the game of land as long as you are in a state of pilgrimage. And fear Allah to Whom you shall be gathered.

Allah has made the Ka’ba the inviolable House as a mean of support and uplift of mankind, as also the Sacred Month and the offerings and the animals with collars. That is so that you may know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and that Allah knows all things well.

Know that Allah is sever in punishment and that Allah is also Most Forgiving, Merciful.” (5:95-98)

If the pilgrim has sexual intercourse with his/her spouse before the first Tawaaf the Hajj will become invalid or unlawful. He/she should continue to perform all the duties of the pilgrimage but he/she has to perform pilgrimage again the next year. Moreover he/she has to sacrifice a camel at Mina to atone the violation.

  8.   Ahsari
If some difficulty arises after entering the state of Ihram for the Hajj or Umra (i.e., illness, resistance by enemy to prevent from reaching Mecca) then the sacrifice of an animal should be offered and the Ihram removed. We read in the Holy Quran: “ … but if you are kept back, then make whatever offering is easily available; and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its destination … “ (2:197).

  9.  Umra
To simply circuit the Ka’ba and perform the seven circuits between Safa and Marwah is called Umra. There is no fixed time for Umra and it can be performed at any time during the year except between the 9th and the 13th of Dul-Hajj (these days are only reserved for the full pilgrimage or Hajj). Entering into the state of Ihram and removal of Ihram is carried out in the same manner as for the full pilgrimage.

  10.  Types Of Hajj:
There are three types of Hajj:
  a.  Hajj Mufrad:
All conditions of the Hajj Mufrad are same as described above. One enters into the state of Ihram for Hajj only and no Umra is performed before Hajj.
  b.  Hajj Tamattu :
This is Hajj when Umra is performed before the Hajj. The pilgrim removes Ihram for Umra on the 8th of Dul Hajj and re-enters into the state of Ihram again for Hajj.
  c.   Hajj Qiran:
In this Hajj, the pilgrim enters into the state of Ihram for both Umra and the Hajj at one time.

  11. Places of Hajj inside Mecca
  A.  Ka'aba:
The focus of the pilgrimage is Ka’ba which was rebuilt by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) some 4000 years ago. Today, Ka’ba stands in the middle of a large courtyard of Masjid-el-Haram or the sacred Mosque. The courtyard of Masjid-el-Haram contains, besides Ka’ba, the Muqam-e-Ibrahim (place of Ibrahim) and the fountain of Zumzum.
Ka’ba is the first house ever that was built for the worship of One and Only God, Allah. It is also called “Bait-Ullah” (House of Allah), “Bait-ul-Ateeq” (the Oldest House), and Baitul Ma’amoor (Inhabited House).
Muslims, all over the world, face towards Ka’ba to offer their prayers. This house and the places around it have several signs that have been manifested by Allah. Every inch of this land testifies to the fact that Allah never destroys those who offer sacrifices. To commemorate Allah’s signs and to enhance their faith that Allah truly fulfils His promise, Muslims have been ordered to pay homage to the Ka’ba and these other Signs of Allah. Allah the Exalted, says in the Holy Quran:
“Surely, the first House founded for mankind is that at Becca (the valley of Mecca), abounding in blessings and a guidance for all peoples. In it are manifest signs; it is the place of Abraham; and whoso enters it, enters peace” (3:96-97)
Hadrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) laid a foundation stone for a community in a deserted place by the order of All-Mighty Allah. The he settled his wife, Hajira, and his son, Ishmael, at this place. There was no water at this place and it was not a part of any thoroughfare. The ultimate goal of this unparalleled sacrifice was that his place should serve as a center of universal guidance; that from the progeny of Hadrat Ishmael living in this area would come the greatest prophet whose advent marked the sole cause for the creation of this universe and who would be a mercy for all mankind. The teaching that he brought down would be for the entire world and for all times. In spite of having no sign of any provisions at this place, Hadrat Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) expectations were superceded. Allah made provisions for water at that place. Slowly the place became populated and was called Becca or Mecca. This was the place where Hadrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) found lost signs of the first House of Allah that was built for His worship and re-built this house with the help of his son. He fervently prayed to Allah to make this house the “Place for Humanity”.
  B.  Hajr-e-Aswad (The Black Stone)
There is a black stone in the north-eastern corner of the Ka’ba. This stone is called Hajr-e-Aswad (Black Stone). This stone was probably part of a meteoroid that fell near Mecca on a mountain called Abu Qubais. At the time of construction of Ka’ba, Hadrat Ibrahim brought it down and placed in the corner of the Ka’ba as a great sign and a monument. Anyone who performs pilgrimage is expected to kiss this memorial stone. This stone is part of Allah’s mark and is a sign of Him being the Supreme Being. One loves things that belong to one’s beloved. The same philosophy exists behind kissing the stone. This stone has no power and it provides neither benefit nor harm to anyone.
  C.  Hateem
A short distance away from Ka’ba towards North there is an open space. The place has small walls around it but there is no ceiling. There is a tradition of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) that suggests that this place was left without a roof because not enough wood was available to cover the entire building.A pilgrim should keep this place inside the Tawaaf but it is not right to face towards this place when offering prayers.
  D.  Multazam
The southern part of the wall between the door of the Ka’ba and the black stone is called Multazam. At the completion of the pilgrimage the pilgrims embrace this part of the wall. This is one way of saying good-bye and a way of expression of extreme love for the House of Allah.
  E.  Rukun-e-Yemeni
The north-western corner of the Ka’ba faces towards Yemen and this is why it is called Rukun-e-Yemeni (Yemen’s Pillar). It is not appropriate to touch or kiss this part during making a circuit of the Holy Ka’ba.

F.  Mutaaf

There is a circle of white stone around the Ka’ba. This is the place where the circuit of the Holy Ka’ba is performed during the pilgrimage. The circuit of the Holy Ka’ba is an integral part of the worship offered seven times during Hajj.
  G.  Muqam-e-Ibrahim (Place of Ibrahim)
There is a small round-shaped building in front of the door of the Ka’ba and the Multazam. This building has a stone that was used by Hadrat Ibrahim to stand on to complete the walls of the Ka’ba. This is called Muqam-Ibrahim (Place of Ibrahim). After completing the seventh circuit during the pilgrimage, two Raka’t of prayer are offered. One gets more blessings if these Raka’ts are offered at the Place of Ibrahim.

H.  Zumzum

A small well is present on the left side of the Place of Ibrahim and to the east of the Ka’ba. This well appeared as a sign when the child Ishmael rubbed his heels on the ground due to his thirst. One drinks water from this well facing the Ka’ba to get blessings.

I.  Masjid-el-Haram

Around the Ka’ba is a mosque that has a rectangular shape with rounded corners. Pilgrims offer prayers in this mosque by making circular rows and face towards the Ka’ba.

J.  Al-Safa and Al-Marwa

Two small hills in Mecca were located in the north of Masjid-el-Haram. Now these hills have been flattened. Hadrat Hajirah ran seven times between these two hills in search of food and water. Pilgrims are ordained to follow her footsteps and go to these hills seven times.

  12.  Places Outside of Mecca

A.  Mina

There is an open ground three miles to the east of Mecca called Mina. There are three stone pillars in this ground that are called Jumrat representing Satan. These stones are called Jumrah-tul-Oola, Jumrah-tul-Wusta, and Jumrah-tul-Aqbah. During the last day of Hajj, the 10th Dul-Hajj and three Tashriq days, pilgrims are required to cast stones at these Jumrah. This act of casting stones at Jumrah is called Ramy al-jimar (throwing small stones). Thousands of animals are sacrificed on this ground to commemorate the great sacrifice of Hadrat Ibrahim and Hadrat Ishmael.
  B.  Arafat
On the 9th day of Dul Hajj pilgrims gather in a great ground that is located about 9 miles to the southeast Mecca. This ground is called Arafat. Pilgrims stay at this place from the time of Duhr prayer until Maghrib. Jabalu-Rahmat is a small hill that also stands on this ground. A pilgrim is required to stay at this ground for his/her pilgrimage to be acceptable.
  C.  Muzdalifah
This ground is located roughly three miles from Arafat towards Mina. A small hill Mash’ar-al-Haraam is present in this field. Pilgrims spend the night of 9ht Dul Hajj in this field on their way back from Arafat. They offer Maghrib and Isha prayers combined and then Fajr prayer on the morning of the 10th day of Dul Hajj at this place. Pilgrims are commanded to remember Allah after the Fajr prayer near the mountains of Mash’ar-ul-Haraam.
  D.  Muwaqiat
Muwaqiat is the plural of Miqat. This is the place where pilgrims enter into the state of Ihram. It is forbidden to go any further from this place without entering the state of Ihram. Ihram is not only wearing specific clothing but it is also a sincere intention to perform the pilgrimage. There are several placed to enter into the state of Ihram that are marked as Miqat depending upon the route taken towards Mecca. Following are the well-known places where the Pilgrims enter into the state of Ihram.
  a.  Mecca
Pilgrims who live in and around Mecca enter into the state of Ihram in their homes. People can enter into the state of Ihram before leaving their homes. It is not absolutely necessary for “local” pilgrims to enter into the state of Ihram at the Mawaqit, however, it is forbidden to proceed any further from these place without being in the state of Ihram for the people coming from other locations.
  b.  Dul-Hulaifah:
Five miles from Madina towards Mecca is a small village. Pilgrims arriving from Madina and from its surrounding areas are required to replace their usual clothes with Ihram at this place
  c.  Juhfah
This place located about forty miles to the south of Mecca. Pilgrims arriving from Egypt, Syria and Southern Africa are required to enter into the state of Ihram at this place.
d.  Zaat-ul-Irq
Located about thirty miles from Mecca, the pilgrims coming from Iraq and by land from the eastern side enter into the state of Ihram at this place.

  e.  Qarn-al-Manazil
Located about 40 miles to the east of Mecca, the Pilgrims arriving from Yemen and by sea enter into the state of Ihram at this place.

  f.  Taneem
This place is near Mecca and acts as Miqat for people living in Mecca. If someone is living in Mecca and wants to perform Umra then he should go to this place, enter into the state of Ihram and then return to Mecca so that the condition of traveling for the pilgrims is also fulfilled. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has said: “Part of the worship of Hajj and Umra is to travel in the way of Allah and to go out of the city.”
  E.  Haram
Mecca and its surrounding areas are called Haram. Haram has different boundaries. These boundaries extend to three miles on one side, seven on the other and nine miles towards Jedda. Within these boundaries of Haram it is forbidden to hunt, bother any animal, or to cut grass or trees. One is permitted to kill dangerous animals like snakes, scorpions, rats or animals with rabies (dogs, etc.)

Be always saturated with love. Do not use poisonous words against anyone, for words are more fatal than even arrows. Speak softly and sweetly. Sympathise with the suffering and the ignorant. Do your best to apply the salve of soothing words and render timely help. Do not damage anyones faith in virtue and Divinity. Encourage others to have that faith by demonstrating in your own life that virtue is its own reward and that Divinity is all-pervasive and all-powerful.

CHAPTER 21

In the lie of yesterday, lies the fear of tomorrow, and in this fear of tomorrow, lies your worry of the future. Truth will always sleep with contentment and wake up to tomorrow with even more vigor and strength. The tongue may slip to lie, the eyes may blink several times to cover the lie, the mind may cover it with its justification, but your heart will only repeat the truth to you over and over again. Yes! The voice from within will speak to let you know that you have gone against the self once again. The magic of truth will make the world disappear, leaving only the existence of God.

Several untruths may have passed you by with no immediate serious consequences, but remember, the truth that exists around you will not rest, until this untruth will be unfolded, one day. Look behind you, and you will see the guilt of a lie, the shadow of truth will follow you, until the lie becomes your repentance and truth your acceptance. Know that the truth can never be concealed for long, and a lie will never succeed.

The truth may be harsh, the steps ahead may be rough, but truth endures all. A lie is only a parasite that lives and feeds on the comforts of others. A lie may be a temporary convenience, but a life long disability. When the speaking of untruth becomes your practice, life will become a bed of worries. Your one lie will only lead to several others, and this chain of lies will degenerate your mind, body, and soul, making you only a bundle of nerves, that will constantly fear to confront the face of truth.

Truth must not be spoken to hurt others; truth must be gentle, yet firm. Even a small exaggeration is a lie, for it deviates from the true picture. Truth does not worry, for it speaks only all it sees, hears, and feels. Nothing more, nothing less! You waste so much time in rehearsing your untruths, in worrying if your act was accepted as a truth, and furthermore, in remembering this lie for more future acts and rehearsals. Your time is spent, My dears, in manipulating the truth, but can the truth ever change? No! The truth will always remain the truth, but you will be the liar that will carry the burdens of untruths. The truth will remain the truth; it is you that will be the victim of constant nervousness. The truth will remain the truth; the only untruth that will remain will be - you!

Om Sairam dearest Sai Family,
The evening of our beloved Lord's 84thbirthday celebrations was full of joy and festivity. The whole Puttaparthi came alive on this most important and beautiful day. The streets were full with people and just people all over... To take a walk from the busstation to samadhi road it took 30 minutes with the crowd. Even then the crowd was still less compared to yester years. On 23rd there were so many villagers from surrounding villages who came to Parthi. The streets were full of traders of all kinds. Balloon men displaying their colourful balloons, there were people selling toys, selling used sarees, tshirts and jeans for just 50 rupees. I was bit curious to know as how they good give such a nice bargain and they said all these are used clothes sent from rich countries.
There were also people selling all kind of eateries in the streets. Some shopkeepers in Chitravathi road, did narayana seva and that was very nice of them feeding the poor villagers who couldn't make it to the ashram but had something to eat...
Another important but a very sad development these days in Parthi is the video piracy. It is so rampant that if a DVD of some programme is released in the ashram bookstore(after hours and hours of hard work by the brothers working in the digital studio and book trust) the same evening they will start making copies and sell out side. Chitravathi in particular has about 10 stores like this displaying the video in big TVs and also with big sound and a friend of mine who is in this business sold 50 DVDs of the Golden chariot video in one day... This is a very shameful business which is not good at all. Many a times, if you are good in bargain, you get the same DVD for half the price compared to the ashram. But before one buys, one has to see the sanctity with which it is made in the ashram, the hard work put in by the students of our beloved Lord and the noble motive behind it. Also the ashram store has a superior high quality recording and let us all buy things like DVDs only from the ashram store no matter how difficult it might be sometimes to get through the long queves...
All these days I was thinking it is only DVD that is being pirated but now a days, thanks(but no thanks) to the technology, shopkeepers outside have started selling the photos that are made in the ashram as well..They take a high resololution photo of Swami from the book store counter and probably scan it and print it. Here again, the price is 3 times cheaper compared to the ashram but one has to keep in mind, the print in the ashram is available in high quality photo paper where as outside it is just an ordinary print. Let us all keep this in mind and think twice before encouraging this evil act in which we are also part of by buying these stuff..
Back to darshan, as announced it was an evening full of music and music all over. Dana Gillispie made the evening more beautiful with her most beautiful voice and Swami and all the devotees were immersed in the ocean of bliss. Swami who was clad in a beautiful and rare yellow robe was very impressed by her voice..
Later it was the turn of Malladi brothers to continue their musical saga from the morning.. Swami was again very much impressed by their songs and the devotion with which it was sung.. Swami called them and blessed with golden chain and it was a memorable day for the brothers that they were felicitated by Swami Himself..
This birthday was a memorable one. Very unique. Swami was giving and giving and just giving His love.. A strong message for every one of us to love and share.
It was so nice to see Swami especially on 20th November when He selected about 90 ladies from the lines and blessed them with sarees. Many dignitories were also present for the grand occassion. Famous play back singer and ardent devotee of Swami Smt. Kavitha Krishnamurthi Subramanyam and her bride to be daughter were also present and Swami blessed them with sarees. Smt. Susheela famous play back singer from Andhra Pradesh, Smt.Anjali Devi, Santoor maestro Sri.Pandit Shivakumar Sharma, , Sri.Ashok Chavan, Sri.Ajit Popat (Puppet), Jadhav Brothers who were instrumental in building the Hadsi temple and many others were present..
Let this birthday remind us that what we are doing is not good. Let this birthday remind us that we are already running late with the Avatar. Swami has come to teach and show us the highest truth. We are still lagging behind totally deluded in illusion and let this not happen again.
In water a stick appears to be bent where as in reality it is straight.. We are the the stick Divine but appears to be bent because of illusion, body identification, ego, ignorance.. In water of family, in the water of community, in water of sensual pleasure, In reality we are very much divine but appears to be bent. Let us know that we are essentially divine.
Let us all make Swami proud, let Swami tell about us that My children are Bangaroo (pure gold) and for Him to say that, what we have to do is Love Him as we love our selves and Love the Society as we love Him...
With Pranams at the Lotus feet of our beloved Lord,
R. Satish Naik..

Om Sai Ram !Om Ganeshaya Namaha!
Jai Maata di!Om Nama Shivaya!
Samudra Manthan
This very popular Shivaratri legend from Puranas explains why people stay awake all night on Shivaratri. Besides, it also tells us why Lord Shiva is also known as Neelakantha.
Legend Behind Samudra Manthan
Once Indra - the King of Gods, while riding on an elephant came across Durvasa Muni who offered him a special garland. Indra accepted the garland but put in on the trunk of the elephant. The elephant was irritated by the smell and it threw the garland on the floor. This enraged the sage as the garland was a dwelling of Sri (fortune) and was to be treated as prasada. Durvasa Muni cursed Indra and all devas to be bereft of all strength, energy, and fortune. In battles that followed this incident, devas were defeated and asuras (demons) led by Bali gained control of the universe. Devas sought help from Lord Vishnu who advised them to treat asuras in a diplomatic manner. Devas formed an alliance with asuras to jointly churn the ocean for the nectar of immortality and to share it among them. Lord Vishu told Devas that we would arrange that they alone obtain the nectar.
The Churning of the Ocean
The churning of the milk - ocean was an elaborate process. Mount Mandara was used as churning rod and Vasuki, the King of Serpents, became the churning rope. Lord Vishnu himself had to intercede in so many ways to aid the Devas. All kinds of herbs were cast into the ocean and many great beings and objects were produced from the ocean and were divided between asuras and gods. It is said that following things emerged from the Samudra Manthan:
Sura or Varuni - Goddess and creator of wine
Apsaras - various divine nymphs
Kaustubha - a rare diamond said to be the most valuable jewel in the world
Uchhaishravas - the divine white horse
Kalpavriksha - the wish-granting tree
Kamadhenu - the wish fulfilling cow
Airavata - the white elephant
Lakshmi - the Goddess of Fortune and Wealth. Vishnu and Her were reunited after having been separated for many ages.
Haalaa-Hala - the Poison
During the Sagar Manthan by the gods and demons, haalaa-hala, a pot of poison also came out of the ocean. This terrified the Gods and demons as the poison was so toxic that it effects would have wiped out the entire creation. On the advice of Lord Vishnu, Gods approached Lord Shiva for help and protection as only he could swallow it without being affected. On the request of gods and out of compassion for living beings, Lord Shiva drank the poison. However, Parvati - Lord Shiva’s consort pressed his neck so that the poison does not reach his stomach. Thus, it stayed in his throat neither going up nor going down and Shiva remained unharmed. The poison was so potent that it changed the color of Lord Mahadeva’s neck to blue. For this reason, Lord Shiva is also called Neelakantha (the blue-necked one) where ‘Neela’ means blue and ‘Kantha’ means neck or throat. As part of the therapy, doctors advised gods to keep Lord Shiva awake during the night. Thus, Gods kept a vigil in contemplation of Lord Shiva. To amuse Shiva and to keep him awake, the gods took turn performing various dances and playing music. As the day broke out, Lord Shiva, pleased with their devotion blessed them all. Shivaratri is the celebration of this event by which Shiva saved the world. Since then, on this day and night - devotees fast, keep vigil, sing glories of Lord and meditate.
Churning Out Divine Nectar
At last, Dhanvantari - the Divine Physician appeared with a pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality) in his skilful hands. Fierce fighting ensued between devas and asuras for the nectar. To protect the nectar from asuras, devas hid the pot of nectar at four places on the earth - Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. At each of these places, a drop of the nectar spilled from the pot and since then, it is believed that these places acquired mystical power. Grand Kumbh Mela is celebrated at the four places after every 12 year for this reason. Eventually, Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful woman, Mohini. While her beauty bewildered the asuras, Mohini seized the nectar and returned it to the Devas, who drank it immediately.
This story can be applied to ourselves. We start out as the Heaven ruled by the devs. We have been graced by God with good qualities. But as we (mind - Indra) gets into pride and ego, it leads into our downfall and we get ruled by the daityas (anger, greed, lust, etc). During some time in our life, our soul turns to God for help. God then says, OK, I will help, by showing you the path, but you will also have to do some work. Hence the churning. Through prayers, meditations, etc., we churn our mind. We get pulled by both sides of our mind. Initially, in any detoxification process, the toxins come out. This is where God comes to our help by giving us the strength to overcome these problems.
Eventually, we get back to our God like state. The bad qualities which are left over, for us to keep on remembering God as we should not let the ego overtake us.
[Interpretation by Suneel]
The above images of Samudra Manthan are Displayed At Bankok Airport
In Bangkok, Thailand, there is new international airport called Suvarn-bhoomi. Very interesting to know that country surrounded by other major religion has such a huge display from the scripture of Devi Bhagavat and Vishnu Puran.

As is well known - majority of the population in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, etc., are not Hindus - but they have the culture of respecting their forefathers who were Hindus - and also the Hindu Sanatan Dharma which is unique and has no comparison.
This wonderful sculpture, depicting 'Samudra Manthan' at Bangkok's new airport, took several years to build.
May all the Gods and Godesses help us in killing the ego, pride, greed , lust, and all the evil with in us. Message from the teachings of Sai baba for 23rd November
Love can melt Even the Stone-Hearted
Every person in this world pines for love. We search for such pure love which sincerely seeks the goodness of all. But, it is not so easy to get such love. Love is like a lyre (Veena) that pulls the strings of two hearts. Love is God. It could be grasped only when we realize that it is a divine form and commune with it in love. It is enough to contemplate with love on Sai, the Divine Incarnation who descended on the earth with love for humanity. Divine love is the master-key to free us from the bondage of troubles and release us from the prison of sufferings. We can experience pleasure, peace, solace and immense joy through such love. We could love and help all universal beings and share the words of hope and Baba's teachings with all.Our service coupled with God's love will not only make the sick healthier and the agitated minds rest at peace. It wipes away all evil thoughts and takes us closer to Baba. Not content with love we get, we should long for the opportunity to get delighted by the sweet experience of sharing our love with all, in our words and deeds. With the key of love, we can unlock even the toughest heart of an individual. Love has the power to tame even cruel animals. When mortal love has so much power, the Cosmic Love-Power of Baba has no limit in melting millions of stone-hearted ones.
------
I firmly believe that I have no say or do in choosing the time and the matter of these messages. They are all inspired by Sai himself and I am simply the media to share these wonderful pictures of teerth Yatra with all of you..May Sai show us all His presence and His leelas by taking us around the world to visit all the sacred shrines thru these teerth Yatras.

Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu Gurur Devoh Maheshwar;
Gurur Shakshat Parambramha Tashmai Shri Gurur Veh Namah"

May the Merciful Sri Sai Baba always shower His grace on us and our families and remove our problems and anxieties by giving us all - strength , goodluck, success and happiness with peace of mind.
Sai bhakt,
