New, excellent website on Sri Sathya Sai Baba Service Acitivites

This site is a dedication to his innumerable ongoing service activities that have benefited millions worldwide. It demonstrates the remarkable feats that one can achieve by appreciating unity in diversity and practising a few basic human values.

General information about this site

"My life is my message," Baba stated in his youth and he continues to reiterate and demonstrate these words even now. The implications of this statement have been far-reaching as millions of people have discovered over the years, not just via his awe-inspiring teaching and simple lifestyle, but through his actions and selfless service of humanity.

This site is simply a tribute to Baba and two of his powerful axioms, upon which he has built his Education in Human Values (EHV) programme:

Help Ever, Hurt Never
and
Service to Man is Service to God

This tribute is not just to a Spiritual Master who has never lived outside his native village or remained unmarried, but it is directed towards someone who has relentlessly worked hard, starting from his early teens, to increase the morale and confidence of people to help themselves and help others. This he has achieved through much hands-on work. His words find fruition in action as he implements new ways of working hand-in-hand with the poor and the downtrodden. In doing so, he has drawn the attention of the world to his vast and successful service activities, which are modelled and achieved in record-breaking time. Baba's projects, purely non-profit and charitable by nature, lend a new meaning to excellence in efficiency and effectiveness.

This site will be prone to frequent updates, so please check back often.

Chapter 5
Yajnas and the Penance of Elders

rozelotus.gif (8499 bytes)Dharmaraja accepted the advice of Vasudeva, as well as the benedictions of Vyasa. He sent his brothers, with the army, to bring the gold that had been thrown aside by the Brahmins. They left after purifying themselves by partaking consecrated offerings. They discovered the quantities of gold that had been given as presents to the priests at the conclusion of the Sacrifice by Emperor Maruth in the past. They had dropped the gold on the sides of the roads along which they returned home. The army collected these and conveyed them to the Capital on camels, elephants, chariots and carts. It took them some days to reach Hasthinapura with all that load. They unloaded the gold, amidst the acclamations of the people.

The citizens were amazed at the success of the expedition; they extolled the good fortune of the Pandavas. They welcomed into the City the princes and the gold shouting "Jai, Jai" until their throats were hoarse, jumping and dancing in joy. They pictured among themselves the grandeur and magnificence of the sacrifice, for which this gold was brought.

Preparations were started that very day for the construction of the ritual altar and the necessary adjuncts on the bank of the Ganga; the sacred area was many square miles in extent. The ground was levelled and cleaned. The dais was built; beautiful buildings arose on the vast area. Porches and verandahs were added. Decorations like flags and festoons embellished the structures.

When the holy day neared, Chieftains, Brahmins, Scholars and Sages moved from all directions towards the sacred place, hastening each other in their enthusiasm to reach early. They took residence in the quarters allotted to them, according to their status and needs. They spent the night counting minutes, in joyful expectation of the extravagant but efficacious Yajna that they could witness when the dawn brings in another day.

The morning came. The auspicious moment approached. The priests took up their positions and got ready to take the vows of initiation. They stood up facing Lord Krishna and the King and said, "0 King! We understand that you have resolved to perform not one but three Aswamedhas (Horse Sacrifices). Is that correct? If so, do you desire us to perform them, one after the other? Or, shall we repeat every formula and rite, thrice and have them all concurrently? If you make it known, we shall arrange the participants and performing priests accordingly ."

At this, Dharmaraja replied, "What can I say when you know best; I shall agree to whatever advice you offer. I seek on1y the consent of Vasudeva for whatever course we adopt" and he turned towards Krishna with pleading eyes. Krishna left the decision to the Brahmins. They discussed among themselves for a while and announced at last that the effect of "Three Aswamedhas" can be secured by repeating each manthra thrice and presenting the Brahmins presiding over the rituals thrice the usual fees. Vasudeva indicated His approval of this suggestion, and taking his cue from this, Dharmaraja declared that he was agreeable. He desired that the Yajna might be inaugurated.

The recitation of the manthras by the Brahmins shook both earth and sky. The preliminary rites were gone through and the sacrificial horses proceeded on their planned round. They were caparisoned in great style and they carried on their foreheads the Declaration challenging any one to take them into custody if he dared. When He, who is the recipient of all Yajnas, (Yajnaswarupa) has taken the role of the presiding authority, no words can describe the fortune of the participants and the witnesses. It drew to a successful close with the Valedictory Oblation (Poorna-ahuthi).

The experts in sacrificial manthras, the sages and the Brahmins were loaded with presents and fees. Enormous numbers of cows, large areas of land, and vast quantities of gold were gifted away by the King. The whole nation was filled with happiness. Every one was praising the Yajna as indescribably superb. All who came were fed sumptuously at all hours. Sages and ascetics who saw all this lavishness extolled the Yajna of Dharmaraja as grander even than the Yajna performed by Emperor Maruth in the past! They were delighted they got the chance to partake in this Yajna. People once claimed that the Yajna of Maruth was presided over by Indra, the Ruler of the Gods and they felt that it made it incomparably superior to any other sacrifice. But now, they congratulated Dharmaraja on securing the Yajnaswarupa (Vasudeva) Himse1f to preside over the Yajna, a piece of good fortune far superior to Maruth's and far more difficult to secure.

At the end of the Yajna, those who had come from far off places returned; others too turned home. The kings and chieftains took respectful leave of Dharmaraja and went back to their own principalities. The kinsmen of the King stayed for a few days more and left at their convenience to their places.

However, Krishna chose to spend some more time with the Pandavas; so, He stayed on in Hastinapura. The Pandavas were delighted at this signal act of Grace; they made suitable arrangements for the residence of the Lord; they served Him every day, they filled their eyes with His Beauty, they filled their hearts with His Gracious Words of Instruction; they spent the days in supreme Joy. After some time spent thus in the Pandava Capital, Krishna returned to Dwaraka, taking Arjuna with Him. The inhabitants of Dwaraka were overjoyed when their Lord returned to His capital.

(See also Srimad Bhagavatam Chapter 11: Lord Sri Krishna's entrance into Dvaraka)

They welcomed Him in enthusiastic reverence. They feasted on the Darsan of the Lord and were immersed in Ananda.

The Penance of Elders

Meanwhile, news came to Hasthinapura that Vidura his uncle was moving about on the environs of the city in the guise of a monk; it travelled from mouth to mouth and at last reached the ears of Dharmaraja, the King. The news was received with surprise and joy. He sent a few scouts to discover whether the news was authentic, and soon, they brought the welcome information that Vidura had actually come and was present. Dharmaraja could not contain himself with excitement.

"Ah! How happy you have made me!", he exclaimed. "This holy moment has made the dried trunk of the tree of hope put forth leaves again. Oh, I can now see and serve Vidura who fostered us and guarded us and guided us, I who feared I might not get the chance at all."

The heartening news was spread by courtiers among the queens and princesses and women of the royal household. Dharmaraja did not rest; he spoke about the great event to everyone around him; he sought out others to share with them the joy. He issued orders to the army that appropriate arrangements should be made to welcome into the Capital the brother of his late father, Sage Vidura, foremost among the votaries of the Lord. The citizens too were alerted and asked to prepare a grand reception.

They decorated the streets and mansions on each side of them; they erected arches and hung festoons and hoisted flags. They allotted galleries and seats on every road for children, women, and the aged, so that they might have a fine and clear view of the procession and of the great Sage. It was an inspiring sight to see many old men and women hobbling on with their sticks, eager to get a glimpse of Vidura, whom they extolled as the very embodiment of Dharma, as the very God-father of the Pandavas. Some thought at first that the sighting of Vidura on the outskirts of the City must have been in someone's dream, and not in actual fact. They had lived long enough to swallow the rumour without personal verification. For, they never could believe that Vidura would ever come back to Hasthinapura. They grouped themselves on vantage points and got ready for the great moment when they could rest their eyes on the saint. All along the route, every building was overflowing with humanity; the trees carried strings of adventurous youth, full of excitement and expectation, shouting in acclamation of the oncoming guest.

The King decked in ceremonial robes ascended the royal chariot and started out of the palace with his brothers to bring home the famous votary of the Lord.

Vidura appeared before them walking barefoot, slow and dignified, with matted hair and wearing the robes of a monk. The King and his brothers stepped down from their vehicles, bowed reverentially to the Feet of Vidura and walked behind him, at a respectful distance. The citizens ran forward and fell at Vidura's Feet, in spite of the earnest entreaties of the guards that they should desist. The Pandavas could not express Welcome in words; their joy was immeasurable. So, their eyes spoke it, with tears of gratitude. They clasped Vidura in their arms and prayed to him that he should get into the chariot so that the thick ranks of onlookers on all the roads might get Darsan to their hearts' content. Vidura was persuaded to agree. Seated in the Royal Chariot of the King, Vidura gave Darsan to the people who had amassed en route. At last, the Procession reached the Palace. It was a sweet flood of song and joy that flowed along the roads of the city that day.

Some of the citizens were so overcome with joy that they were rooted to the spot. The arduous life of Thapas that Vidura had undertaken had so transmuted his personality that he appeared a different person, a person glowing with divine aura, like Indra, the king of Gods. The people were describing their exultation in their own words to one another. Many shed tears remembering the trials and tribulations which Vidura had undergone and the peace that he had acquired. The queens and princesses too had Darsan from inside the purdah and they were supremely happy.

Chapter 4
The Penitential Yajna

rozelotus.gif (8499 bytes)The Namakaranam Ceremony of the Prince gave great delight to the subjects of the State as well as the inmates of the Palace, and members of the Royal Household. But, Yudhishtira, the eldest of the Pandava brothers felt that something more had to be done: he was not content with the joyous festival alone. He called for an assembly the same evening of all the elders, the scholars, the Pundits, the subordinate rulers and leaders of the people: he prayed that Lord Krishna preside over the gathering and confer joy on all. The sages Vyasa and Kripa also attended.

Coming to the Assembly, Yudhishtira stood before the gathering a few seconds in silence, before he fell at the feet of Lord Krishna and the sage Vyasa. He then turned towards the rulers, scholars and leaders and said, "I was able to defeat the foes through your help, cooperation and best wishes, as well as the blessing of the Lord who is present here and of the sages and saints who have installed Him in their hearts. We were able by means of that victory to win back the kingdom that we had lost. Again, through these blessings, the light of hope has gleamed in hearts, darkened by despair about the continuation of this dynasty. The Pandava line will be continued by the Prince who was named today by the Lord as Parikshith.

While all this delights me, I must announce before you that I am overwhelmed with sorrow at the contemplation of another side of the picture. I have committed countless sins, killing kith and kin. I feel I must do some expiation for this; or else, there will be no happiness for me or for my dynasty or for my people. Therefore, I wish to take this opportunity to seek your advice on this matter. There are among you many who have known the Reality and attained Brahmajnana; we have also the great sage Vyasa here. I expect you to suggest some expiatory rite by which I can rid myself of this colossal quantity of sin that I have accumulated as a result of this war."

When Yudhishtira posed this problem in great humility and with great contrition, Lord Krishna said, "Yudhishtira, you are famous as Dharmaraja and you ought to know Dharma. You know the intricacies of Dharma and morality, of justice, of right and wrong conduct. Therefore, I am surprised that you are afflicted with grief over this war and this victory. Do you not know that a Kshatriya incurs no sin when he kills a foe who has come to the battlefield armed with intention to kill? Whatever injury or pain or loss is inflicted on the battlefield during the fight with armed foes is free from sin. It is the Dharma of a Kshatriya to take up the sword and fight to the very end, without any thought of self, to save his country. You have only observed your Dharma. How can Karma (Activity) along the lines of Dharma be sinful? It is not proper to doubt this and give way to despair. Sin cannot touch you, surround you or bother you. Instead of exulting over the festival of the naming of the new-born Prince, why should you dread imaginary calamities and seek remedies for non-existent sins? Be calm; be happy."

Vyasa too rose from his seat and addressed the King. "Sinful and blame-worthy acts are inevitable in battle. They should not be the cause for grief. The chief aim in battle should be the protection of Dharma from its foes. If that is kept before the mind, the sin will not affect the fighters. A putrid wound has to be treated with the knife; it is not sinful to inflict the surgery. A doctor who knows the surgery, and knowing, does not save the man by doing it, incurs sin. So too knowing that the foe is the source of injustice, cruelty, terror and vice, if these boils are not treated by the surgeon, knowing the cure, because he is reluctant to use the knife (the surgeon being the Ksha-triya), he incurs sin by remaining quiet, not by using the sword. Dharmaraja, you are speaking under a delusion. I can understand others less wise being afflicted by these doubts, but, I wonder how you are worried over this fear of sin?

If however our words do not carry conviction, I can suggest another remedy too. That will remove all fear. Some rulers in the past have resorted to it, after the conclusion of wars, for the removal of the effects of sin. It is the rite of Aswamedha, the Horse Sacrifice. If you desire, you can also perform this rite, as an expiatory ceremony. There can be no obstacle for that. But, believe me, you are innocent of sin even without any expiation. Since your faith is shaky. I am suggesting this rite for your satisfaction". After this statement, Vyasa resumed his seat.

At this, all the elders, scholars and leaders rose as one man and applauded the valuable suggestion given by Vyasa. They shouted, Jai Jai, in order to demonstrate their approval and appreciation. They exclaimed, "0! How auspicious", "How significant" and they blessed Dharmaraja in the endeavour to free himself from the sinful consequences of war. But, Dharmaraja was still heavy with grief; he was not free from fear. His eyes were wet with tears.

He pleaded with the assembly, most piteously. "However much you assert my innocence, I am not convinced. Somehow, my mind does not accept your argument. Rulers who were engaged in wars might have cleansed themselves by means of the Aswamedha yaga. Those were ordinary wars; they were the usual type. But my case is something very extraordinary. My sins are three times more sinister, for, (1) I have killed kith and kin (2) I have killed holy elders like Bhishma and Drona and (3) I have killed many crowned heads. Alas, my fate! How monstrous have been my actions?"

"No other ruler could have done so much of iniquity. Not one, but three Aswamedha Yagas have to be performed to cleanse this quantity. Then, only can I have peace. Then only can my dynasty be happy and secure. Then only can the administration of my kingdom be safe and meritorious. This must be kindly accepted by Vyasa and other elders and sages."

When Yudhishtira spoke thus, tears dropped on his cheeks; his lips quivered with sorrow; his body was bent with remorse. Seeing this, the heart of every sage melted with pity. The subjects of the King were moved in sympathy. Vyasa and even Vasudeva were affected. Many Pundits shed tears, without being aware of it. The assembly was struck dumb with astonishment. All knew in a flash how soft the heart of Dharmaraja was. The brothers too, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva were standing with folded palms, in reverential humility, awaiting the word that will assure relief, from the Lord who was in the Presidential Seat.

Then, the assembly, with one voice, approved the three Aswamedha Yagas, to relieve the distress of Dharmaraja. One sage gave expression to the opinion of the assembly. He said, "We shall not stand in the way of your desire. We accept it whole-heartedly. We shall celebrate the Yagas in the best Sastraic way, until the final rites. For, we seek peace of mind for you, more than anything else. We are prepared to do anything which will give you satisfaction." This was acclaimed by every one in the gathering.

Hearing this, Dharmaraja said; "I am indeed blessed; I am blessed indeed. He gave his grateful thanks for the promised cooperation. He walked towards the place where Krishna and Vyasa were seated and he fell at their feet. He held the feet of Krishna and pleaded, "0 Madhusudana! Didn't you hear my prayer? Didn't you witness my grief? I pray that you grant us your Divine presence at the coming Yaga, that you ensure me the fruit thereof and save me from this burden of sin."

Krishna smiled and lifted him up from the ground before Him. He said, "Dharmaraja! I shall certainly answer your prayer. But, you have taken upon your shoulders a burden as heavy as a range of mountains. This Yaga is no small affair. Moreover, the performer is the celebrated King, Dharmaraja! That means, it has to be celebrated on a scale befitting your status. I know that you have no where-withal for this very expensive undertaking. Kings derive money only from their subjects. To spend on a Yaga, the money squeezed out of them is not desirable. Only well earned money can be used for such holy rites; else it will bring evil instead of good. Nor can your subordinate rulers come to your help, for they too have been miserably impoverished by the late war. It is clear they have nothing to spare. Aware of all this, how could you accept to celebrate three Aswamedhas in a row? I wonder how you found such audacity in spite of these adverse conditions. And, you have already announced it publicly in this great and distinguished gathering. You did not give Me even a hint about this costly idea. Then, we could have thought out some plan. Well, it is not too late. We shall take a decision after some more deliberation. It does not matter if some delay is caused."

Dharmaraja listened to these words of the Lord and laughed a hearty laugh! "Lord, you are playing a drama with me, I know. I have never decided upon an act without deliberation. Nor have I ever worried about money or the wherewithal. When we have as our guardian, You with your inexhaustible Grace, why should I worry about anything? When I have the Kalpatharu (Wish fulfilling tree) in my garden, why should I worry, seeking roots and tubers? The all-powerful Lord, who has been guarding us all these terrible years as the eyelids guard the eye, will not give us up, at this juncture.

For You who can whiff huge mountains into dust, this little pebble is no problem at all. You are my Treasure, My treasury. You are the Very Breath. Whatever You may say, I will not hesitate. All my strength, all my wealth is you and you alone. I place all my burdens, including the burden of state and this new burden of the three Yagas on your Feet. You can do anything you like. You may value my word and carry out my intention or you may discard it and cancel the Yagas. I have no concern. I am equally happy, whatever you do. It is Your Will, not mine."

Of Course, with the Lord who resides in the heart, no special pleading is needed. The Lord melted; He lifted Dharmaraja and helped him to stand. "No; I spoke in jest to test your faith and devotion. I wanted to demonstrate to these subjects of yours how strong is your faith in Me. You need have no worry on any score. Your wish will be fulfilled. If you follow My instructions, you can procure very easily the money needed for the celebration of the Yagas. You can get it without harassing the rulers and squeezing the subjects."

On hearing this, Dharmaraja was delighted. He said, "Lord, we shall honour Your command." Then Krishna said, "Listen. In bygone times, a ruler named Maruth performed a Yaga, in a style that no one since then could approach. The hall where the Yaga was celebrated along with every item connected with it were of gold. Gold bricks were given away, as gifts to the priests who officiated; golden images of cows were given instead of cows and plates of gold were distributed instead of lands! The Brahmins were not able to carry them home and so, they took only as much as they could lift or carry. The rest they just cast away. Those pieces of gold are now available in large quantities, for your yagas. You can collect them."

Dharmaraja did not agree; he had qualms about it. He said, "Lord. That is the property of those to whom it was given. How can I make use of it, without their permission?" Krishna replied, "They have cast it away, fully conscious of what they were doing and what they were discarding. They are not alive today. Their children know nothing about the existence of this treasure. It is now under the earth. Remember that all treasure inside the earth, which has no master or owner, belongs to the king of that realm, When the king wants to take possession of it, no one has the right to object. Bring that treasure soon and prepare for the celebration of the Yagas," commanded Lord Krishna.

Chapter 3
Ceremony of Name giving

rozelotus.gif (8499 bytes)"Alas! Is he to suffer at last this tragic fate? Is this to be the reward for all the good in store for Him? Can the consequence of years of good living suddenly turn into this calamitous end? It is laid down that those who die drowning, those who are killed by fall from trees, and those who die of snake-bite have a bad after-life. These are considered "inauspicious deaths"; those whose deaths are such, become ghosts and have to suffer so, it is said. Why should this child end up like that? 0, the horror of it. 0, the injustice of the whole thing!" lamented Yudhishtira, biting his lips to suppress his sorrow.

The Brahmins hastened to console him. "Maharaja!", they interceded. "There is no reason to give way to grief. Such a great man will never meet with such a tragedy. No. In the horoscope of this child, studying the positions of the planets, we can clearly notice two happy conjunctions, which indicate Vajrayoga and Bhakthiyoga, both powerful and propitious. Therefore, as soon as he learns of the curse, he will give up his kingdom as well as his wife and children and retire to the bank of the holy Bhagirathi river and surrender himself to the Lord. The great sage Suka, son of Vyasa, will arrive there and initiate him into Atmajnana (Self-knowledge) through the recital of the glories of Lord Krishna and the singing of His Praise. Thus, he will spend his last days on the sacred bank of Ganga and breathe his last with the adoration of the Lord. How can such a man meet with any tragedy or calamity? He will not be born again, for, through Bhakthiyoga, he will attain oneness with the Lord of All, Purushothama. Hearing these words, Yudhishtira gave up grief and became happy. He said, "If so, this is no curse; it is a unique boon!"

The Name - Parikshith

At this, every one rose. The Brahmins were honoured as befitted their learning and austerity. They were given gems and silken clothes and the king arranged to send them home. Yudhishtira and his brothers moved into their palaces, but, they spent many hours talking about the happenings of the day and of the fears, luckily removed. They were filled with joy at the turn the predictions had taken.

The baby grew in the lying-in-room, as the moon in the bright half of the month. Since it was born as heir to the great empire, after a succession of dire dangers, every one loved it and guarded it like the apple of the eye, as the very breath of their lives. Droupadi who was broken by the loss of her own children, (the Upapandavas), Subhadra who had suffered inconsolable loss in the death of Abhimanyu, and the Pandava Brothers who dreaded that the terrific sorrow of Aswasthama directed against the posthumous child of Abhimanyu, still in the womb of Uttara, might do the worst and destroy for ever the Pandava line - all were relieved, nay, were overjoyed when they saw the child. They were supremely happy; they spent the days doting over the little lovely baby, whom they brought from the zenana for the purpose, whenever they felt the urge to see it and hold it in their arms.

The child too was very bright; it seemed to watch the lineaments of every one who fondled it or came before it. It stared into their faces long and longingly. All were surprised at this strange behaviour. Every person who came to it was subjected to this searching examination by the child who seemed determined to trace some one or some thing, in the world into which it was born.

Some said, sadly, it is seeking its father, Abhimanyu. Others said, "No, no; the child is searching for Lord Krishna". Some others opined that it appeared to be trying to discover some Divine Brilliance. The fact remained that the child was examining all, for some trait or sign which it knew already, to recognise some Form it had in mind. "Pariksha" was the word used by every one for the 'quest' in which the child was engaged and so, even before the formal Naming Ceremony, every one both in the palace and outside it, began referring to the child as the Parik- shith, 'he who is engaged in Pariksha!'

That name, Parikshith, stayed! From the Raja to the ryot, from the Scholar to the boor, from the Monarch to the man-in-the-street, every one addressed the child as Parikshith or referred to him so. The fame of the child grew from day to day. It was on every one's lips. One auspicious day, Yudhishtira had the court priest brought before him and he commissioned him to fix a good day for the ceremony of naming the child-prince.

The priest called together his group of scholars and astrologers and after consulting the conjunctions of heavenly bodies, they discovered a day which all of them agreed was a good one for the event. They also settled at what hour the actual naming has to take place. Invitations to attend the ceremony were sent to the Rulers of the land and to Scholars and Pundits as well as prominent citizens. The king sent his emissaries to invite Sages, and personages, full of spiritual wealth. Arjuna went to Lord Krishna and reverentially prayed that He should shower His Grace on the child on the occasion; he succeeded in bringing Krishna along when he returned.

When Lord Krishna arrived, the Sages, Brahmins, Rajas, subordinate rulers and citizens got ready to receive Him with respectful homage; the Pandava brothers, attired magnificently, waited at the main gate of the Palace to offer Him welcome. When the chariot of the Lord was sighted drums sounded, trumpets pealed mighty welcome, and joyful Jais rose from every throat. Yudhishtira approached the chariot and embraced the Lord as soon as He alighted; he held Him by the hand and led Him into the palace, where a High Throne was specially placed for Him. After the Lord was seated, all else occupied their seats according to their rank and status.

Sahadeva went to the inner apartments and the child was brought on a gold plate, resplendent as the sun, made more charming by magnificent jewels. The priests recited manthras, invoking the Gods to bless the child and confer on him health and happiness.

Sahadeva laid the child down in the centre of the Court Hall. Maids and chamberlains came in long lines towards the place where the prince was, holding in their hand gold plates full of perfumes and flowers, silks and brocades. Behind specially fitted curtains, the queens Rukmini, Droupadi, Subhadra and Uttara were rejoicing at the happy scene, watching the gambols of the child. Sahadeva took the child and placed it on a bed of flowers in the mantap that was erected for the naming ceremony. But, the child rose on all fours and started crawling bravely on, in spite of the remonstrances of the maids. Apparently, it wanted to proceed somewhere!

The efforts of Sahadeva to stop its journey proved futile. Yudhishtira, who was observing its movements with interest said with a smile, "Sahadeva! Do not stand in the way. Leave him alone. Let us see what he does." And, Sahadeva left his hold. He allowed the child to move wherever he liked. Only, he took care to keep his eye always on him lest he fall or hurt himself. He followed him at every step, vigilantly.

The child, who got freedom of movement, soon made a bee line towards the place where Lord Krishna was seated, as if He was a long acquaintance whom he was seeking to meet. The child grasped the Feet of Krishna and pleaded, by his looks, that he may be taken onto the lap and fondled! The Lord saw his yearning; He laughed aloud; then, He graciously bent low to lift the child onto His lap.

Sitting on His lap, the prince was staring at the Lord's face without even a wink; he did not turn his head this way or that or pull at anything with his hands or make any sound. He just sat and stared. Everyone was amazed at this behaviour, so unlike that of a child. Even Krishna shared in the feeling that pervaded the Hall.

Turning to Yudhishtira, Krishna said, "I did not believe when I was told that this child stared at everyone who came before him and examined their lineaments. I thought it was a new explanation given by these priests, to the usual prank and play of children. Now, this is really a wonder. The fellow has started examining even Me! Well, I shall test his behaviour, a little, Myself."

Then, the Lord tried to distract the attention of the child from Himself by placing before him a variety of toys, and Himself hiding from view. He expected that the child will soon forget Him. But, his attention was not drawn towards any other object. He had fixed his eye inexorably on the Lord Himself, and it was seeking Him and no other. He was trying to move towards the place where he imagined Krishna was. When His attempts to transfer the attention of the child from Himself failed, Krishna declared, "This is no ordinary child. He has won through My tests. So, the name Parikshith is the most appropriate one for him. He lives up to it, already!"

At this, the Pundits recited verses indicating their blessings on the child. The Brahmins recited relevant passages from the Vedas. The music of trumpets rent the air. Women sang auspicious songs. The family preceptor dipped a Nine-gemmed jewel in a golden cup of honey and wrote the Name, on the tongue of the child; on the rice grains spread on a gold plate, the name was written and the rice was then showered on the head of the child, in token of prosperity and happiness. The naming ceremony was thus celebrated in grand style. Men and women who attended were given presents as befitted their rank and they departed. Every one was talking appreciatively of the wonderful way in which the child sought out the lap of the Lord. Many praised the steady faith that the child had already attained.

Yudhishtira who was puzzled at the unique behaviour of the child approached Vyasa, the great sage, to know from him the reason for the strange search and learn about the consequences of this attitude. Vyasa said, "Yudhishtira! When this child was in the womb, the deadly arrow that Aswathama aimed at it in order to destroy it was about to hit its target, Lord Krishna entered the foetal home and made it safe and saved it from destruction. This child therefore has been eager to know who had saved him from within the womb where he lay. He started examining every one to find out whether he had the same effluence that he saw, while a foetus in the womb. Today, he saw that Divine Form with all its splendour and so, he moved straight towards Him and prayed to be taken up and seated on the lap. This is the explanation for the strange behaviour about which you are curious to know ."

Hearing these words of Vyasa, Yudhishtira shed tears of joy and thankfulness. Overjoyed at the limitless Grace of the Lord, he paid Him reverential homage.

Chapter 2
The Birth of a Bhagavatha

rozelotus.gif (8499 bytes)Maharaja Parikshith was the very self of Abhimanyu, who had attained the Heavenly Abode of Heroes. When Parikshit was an embryo, growing in the womb of Uttara, he saw the sharp arrow let off by Aswatthama flying towards him, emitting sparks of fury and terror, bent on his destruction. But, at that very moment, he saw also, a Person of Brilliant Charm armed with a Terrific Wheel, breaking that death-dealing arrow into a hundred pieces. The royal foetus was filled with wonder and gratitude.

(see also Srimad Bhagavatam Chapter 12:
Birth of Emperor Parikshit)

He pondered  deep on the identity of his Saviour. "Who is he? He must also be dwelling in this womb, with me, because he could see the arrow at the very moment I saw it! But, he has such intrepidity and skill that he could destroy it before it reached me. Can he be a uterine brother? How could he get hold of that wheel? If he is endowed with a wheel, how did I miss having it? No; He is no mortal." He argued thus for a long time within himself.

He could not forget that Face, that Forms. He was a Boy, with the splendour of a million suns. He was benign, blissful, blue like the clear sky. After saving him so dramatically and so mercifully, he had disappeared. He had the Form always before him, for, he was seeking to see it again. Whomsoever he saw, he examined to find out whether that form corresponded with the Form he had reverentially fixed in his mind.

Thus he grew in the womb, contemplating that Form. That contemplation transformed him into a splendour-filled baby. When at the end of the period of gestation, he was born into the world, the lying-in-room was lit by a strange light. The female attendants of Uttara were dazzled by the brilliance. Their wits were overcome by wonder.

Recovering herself, Subhadra mother of Abhimanyu sent word to Yudhishtira, the eldest of the Pandavas announcing the birth. The Pandava brothers were overwhelmed with joy, when they heard the glad tidings for which they were waiting anxiously. They ordered that bands play, and guns be fired, in honour of the event, for, a scion had been born for the royal family, a successor to the Pandava throne.

The people heard the peal of guns and sought the reason for the joy. They rushed towards Indraprastha in large masses of enthusiasm. Every corner of the kingdom gushed with joy at this event. Within minutes, the City was transformed into a heavenly garden, fit for Gods to give audience to men. Yudhishtira distributed several varieties of sweets to all who came. He granted several cows as gifts to Brahmins. He instructed the ladies of the court to give golden caskets full of saffron and kumkum to women. Brahmins were awarded silk clothes, and precious gems. Citizens were transported with joy, for the dynasty had now secured an heir. Night and day, they reveled in hilarious exultation.

Next day, Yudhishtira called the family priest, Kripacharya and performed the rite of Jatha-karma (first cleansing) to the infant. He satisfied the Brahmins by gifts of various costly jewels. The scholars and priests blessed the child and returned home.

On the third day, Yudhishtira called to his presence renowned astrologers as well as famous palmists and soothsayers, for, he was very eager to know whether the fair name of the kingdom and its culture would be safe in the hands of the prince who had come to carry the burden of the state. He received them at the palace with traditional hospitality; they were given appropriate seats in the hall; they were offered scents and silks.

The king bowed before them and joining his palms in reverential adoration, he prostrated before them, and prayed, "0, wise men, who know the past, present and future, examine the horoscope of the infant that is born, calculate the positions of stars and constellations, and the planetary influences that will guide his life and tell me how the future will be shaped." He noted the exact time of birth and placed the note on a golden plate, before them.

The Pundits took that note and drew up the plan of planetary positions, and studied it with great care. They communicated to one another their increasing joy as they began to draw conclusions; they were in great joy themselves; they could not get words to express their amazement.

The doyen of the group, a great Pundit, at last rose and addressed King Yudhishtira thus. "Maharaja! I have till this day examined well nine thousands of horoscopes and prepared concerned plans of the zodiacs and constellations. But, I must admit I have never yet come across a more auspicious grouping than is indicated in this horoscope. Here, all the signs of good augury have assembled in one moment, the moment of this prince's birth. The moment indicates the State of Vishnu Himself! All the virtues will gather in this child. Why describe each glory separately, the great Manu has again come into your dynasty ."

Yudhishtira was happy that the dynasty had such good fortune. He was indeed overpowered by joy. He folded his palms and bent low before the scholars who had given him such good news. "This family is lucky to claim such a gem as its scion, through the blessings of elders and of pundits like you as well as the blessings of the Lord, who is our guardian. You say that the boy will develop all virtues and will accumulate fame. But of what use is all that if, he has not acquired the quality of reverence towards Pundits, Sadhus and Brahmins? Please look into the horoscope once again and tell me whether he will have that reverence."

The leader of the group of astrologers replied: "You need entertain no doubt on that score. He will revere and serve the gods and the brahmins. He will perform many Yajnas, and Yagas, prescribed in the ancient texts. He will earn the glory that your ancestor Bharatha won. He will celebrate even the Aswamedha. He will spread the fame of this line all over the world. He will win all things that gods or men covet. He will outdistance all those who have gone before him." They extolled him thus in various ways to their hearts' content. They stopped because they were nervous to recount all the excellences; they feared they might be charged with exaggeration and flattery if they continued to detail the conclusions they had drawn from the horoscope of the baby.

Yudhishtira was not satisfied; he wanted to hear more from them of the excellences of the character of the Prince. Pundits were encouraged by this yearning. They said, "0 King, You seem to be eager to know about some more aspects of the child's fortune. We shall only be too glad to answer any specific question that you may feel inclined to put us."

Noting their enthusiasm, Yudhishtira came forward and asked them, "During the regime of this Prince, will there be any great war? If war is inevitable, will he achieve victory? 'No', said the Pundits, He will not be pestered by any foe. He knows no failure or defeat in any undertaking of his. This is absolutely true, an unshakable truth."

Hearing this, Yudhishtira and the brothers Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva looked at each other and shared great joy.

Meanwhile, Yudhishtira began to speak. He had said, "If that is so...", but, before he could complete the sentence, he hung his head and was plunged in thought. The Pundits noticed it; they said, "You seem to be anxious to know something more. You have only to ask, we shall readily answer all questions." "Of course, I am happy at all the answers you have given. He will be virtuous, famous, triumphant over all, loving and kind, treating all equally; he will perform many yajnas and yagas; he will have no enemies; he will bring honour to the dynasty and restore its reputation. All this gives me great joy. But,... I would like to know also, how he will meet his end." The brothers saw Yudhishtira getting rather upset at the anxiety which agitated him over this problem. His voice had faltered a bit, when he put the question.

They consoled him and said, "Why worry about that at this stage? The end has to come some day, some way. It is something that cannot be avoided. Something will cause it; some circumstance will bring it about. Birth involves the contingency of death. We are afraid, the extreme joy of this incident has queered your line of thought a bit. We think this much is enough. We shall leave the rest, in the realm of doubt; let us not probe further. Let us leave it to God."

But, Yudhishtira could not somehow give up his desire to know how such a virtuous ideal Prince would end his career on earth. He imagined it must be a truly wondrous finale to a glorious life. So, he wanted the astrologers to tell him about it.

The scholars set about the calculations again and took a pretty long time over it. Watching this, the King became excited; he hastened them and pressed for a quick answer. They gave the reply, "This prince will give up his kingdom as the result of a sage's curse." Yudhishtira wondered how such a paragon of virtue can ever invoke upon himself the curse of a sage. He was shocked at the possibility.

Meanwhile, the Pundits said, "Our calculations show that he will be bitten by a serpent." Yudhishtira lost heart at this news. All his joy evaporated in a moment. He became very sad and dispirited.

Bhagawan's Discourse on 25th December 2003 at Sai Kulwanth Hall Prasanthi Nilayam

You are God Yourself

(Text of the Divine Discourse delivered by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on 25th December 2003 at Sai Kulwanth Hall)

For the sake of young Prahlada,
For the desperate elephant king,
For the infant Dhruva, steadfast in devotion
For the indigent Kuchela, prolific in family, pauper in substance,
The lotus-eyed Vishnu, extolled by the Vedas,
The ever compassionate one of manifold bounties conferred:
Take all these together, the Lord of Lords is now incarnate,
The embodiment of love and compassion of all the above,
And more.

(Telugu Poem)

Embodiments of Love!
Where is God? When does He incarnate? Where does He incarnate? These are the questions that are troubling the minds of people today. God is omnipresent. All are the embodiments of God. Today, people attribute various names and forms to God like Rama, Krishna and Jesus, and celebrate their birthdays. Truly speaking, can there be a birthday for God? No. To think that God took birth on a particular day in a year is a sign of ignorance. God is in the form of breath in every man. 'Soham', this symbolises the process of inhalation and exhalation. 'So' means 'That' (God), 'Ham' stands for 'I' (individual). Though there are two words, namely God and individual, there is no difference between them. They are one and the same. God in fact has no birth. He does not need to achieve any goals. However, in order to instill faith in the minds of people, He incarnates. If there is birth, there has to be death too. But, God is beyond birth and death. He has neither a beginning nor an end. To think there is a birthday for God is only your imagination. Devotees limit God to a physical frame, worship Him and celebrate His birthdays. That is all a figment of their imagination and does not correspond to the truth.

Every day, in this world, many are born and many die. What is meant by birth and death? To assume a body is birth and to cast off the same is death. It is out of illusion that man experiences the dualities of birth and death, whereas God transcends both. Sarvatah Panipadam Tat Sarvathokshi Siromukham, Sarvatah Sruthimalloke Sarvamavruthya Tishthati (with hands, feet, eyes, head, mouth and ears pervading everything, He permeates the entire universe). It is out of ignorance that man is caught in the cycle of birth and death. Birth and death are caused by the Will of God.

God is the very personification of love. He is present in all beings in the form of the life-breath. Since ancient times, people have made concerted efforts to understand the mystery of birth and death. One need not go that far to understand this mystery. The body which we have assumed makes us experience it every moment. The process of inhalation symbolises birth and exhalation death. Man is unable to understand the inner significance of this breathing process. What is it that man is supposed to do, to escape from the cycle of birth and death? He should develop love more and more. But, today man does not love his fellow human beings even. That does not mean that he lacks love. There is love in him but he is unable to experience it. He should attach value to the principle of love and not merely to individuals.

When we inhale ('So'), the life principle enters our body and when we exhale ('Ham'), it goes out. Every moment, this process of inhalation and exhalation reminds us of our inherent divinity (I am God). So long as there is life-breath, the body is considered to be Sivam (auspicious). Once the life-breath ebbs away, it becomes Savam (corpse). Both birth and death are related to the body and not to the life principle. Many changes take place between birth and death in a mysterious way. It is God who is responsible for all these. But some people deny the existence of God and waste their time in vain argumentation. God DOES exist. He neither comes nor goes. He is present everywhere at all times. Man experiences birth and death because of his body attachment. He will be released from the cycle of birth and death only when he gives up body attachment and surrenders himself completely to the Will of God.

Oh God, I offer the sacred heart to You which You have given me. What else can I offer at Your Lotus Feet? I pray that You accept my humble offering.

(Telugu Poem)

Birth and death arise out of illusion. Every day in this world, many beings are born and many die. Birth and death happen according to the time and circumstances. Between birth and death, man gets deluded by the physical body and develops various relationships at the physical level. He identifies himself with the body and gets carried away by the feeling of I and mine. This is a grave mistake. So long as the body lasts, you are related to so and so. Once the body perishes, what happens to your relationship? True relationship lies at the Atmic level and not at the physical level. Prior to birth who is related to whom? What happens after death? In fact, both birth and death are the results of bhrama (delusion) because of which you are unable to realise Brahma (Divinity). As we are enmeshed in this worldliness, we are unable to comprehend the transcendental principle.

True spiritual practice lies in understanding one's true identity. One should enquire, "Who am I"? All the spiritual practices are meant to make you realise who you really are. Everyone uses the term 'I' while introducing himself. It means that the principle of 'I' (Self) present in you is the same as the one in others. But man is unable to understand this oneness. He is carried away by the differences based on physical body. Consequently, he is giving room to conflicts and unrest.

Embodiments of Love!
Birth and death are related to the body and not to the individual soul. Mind is responsible for both. Everything is man's own making. Life is a dream. How can anything that appears in a dream be true? It is all a mere illusion. So long as you are immersed in this bhrama (delusion), you cannot have the vision of Brahma. It is only when you break the shackles of illusion, can you experience the reality.

You can understand your true identity by observing your breathing process. But man is not interested in such an easy and simple path. He is taking to rough and difficult paths and is ultimately getting frustrated. So long as there is a thorn in the flesh, it hurts. Body attachment is like a thorn which is the cause of all suffering. Once you give up body attachment, you will know your true Self. You suffer because you identify yourself with the body. It is but an illusion. That is why Sankaracharya said:
Punarapi Jananam Punarapi Maranam
Punarapi Janani Jathare Sayanam
Iha Samsare Bahu Dustare
Kripayapare Pahi Murare.
(From birth to birth
From death to death
From womb to womb
Tarrying a while
Such is the sojourn
Of this transient life,
Oh destroyer of the demon Mura,
Be my boatman
On this turbulent ocean
By your bounteous grace.)

One need not undertake intense spiritual practices to cross the ocean of Samsara. All that one has to do is to contemplate on God incessantly. Though God is within, man is unable to realise Him. In the dream state, man may experience death and feel sad about it. When he wakes up, he will heave a sigh of relief realising that what he saw was only a dream. Then who was the one who died in the dream? It was just a creation of the mind. Similarly, even in the waking state, whatever man experiences is a creation of the mind. My father, my mother, my wife, my children, etc., all such feelings arise out of illusion. They do not correspond to the reality. It is because of illusion that man develops physical relationship and ultimately subjects himself to suffering. When man develops pure and unsullied love, he will not experience pain or suffering. Love for the physical body is false and fleeting. Love for the Self is true and eternal. In order to understand the truth of your identity, you should enquire within.

Once Sankaracharya was proceeding to the river Ganga along with his disciples. On the way, he found a person sitting under a tree and repeating Dukrun Karane, Dukrun Karane. He was in fact trying to master the rules of Panini's grammar. Sankara took pity on him and advised him to contemplate on the Lord instead of wasting his time in the acquisition of worldly knowledge.

Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam
Govindam Bhaja Moodha Mathe
Samprapthe Sannihithe Kale
Nahi Nahi Rakshati Dukrun Karane.

(Oh foolish man, chant the name of Lord Govinda; the rules of grammar will not come to your rescue when the end approaches.)

Bhrama and Brahma are based on your mind. They are not present outside. Brahma is within you. But as you are immersed in bhrama (delusion), you consider Brahma (Divinity) to be a distant entity. Once you realise that you are Brahma, you will be free from bhrama once for all. You suffer because you identify yourself with the body. Once you get rid of body attachment, you will experience everlasting happiness.

Embodiments of Love!
Pleasure and pain are your own making. They are not given by God. You are the cause of your suffering, none else. Understand this truth. From the spiritual point of view, pleasure, pain and the worldly relationships are illusory. They are not real. Right from dawn to dusk, man is leading a life of delusion. Having been born as a human being, man should experience the truth. The physical body grows for a certain period and later on becomes weak and decrepit. Birth and growth are related to the body which is unreal. But man considers body to be real and thereby suffers. When you see with your eyes wide open, you are able to see many people. But, when you close your eyes, you cannot see anybody. From where do so many people come when you open your eyes? Where do they go when you close your eyes? You do not know. In fact, you do not know the place of your origin and also your destination. That is why you suffer. Once you realise that you are not the body and nothing in this world belongs to you, you will not suffer. Everything in this world is of your own making. Nothing is real.

Embodiments of Love!
It is only God, the embodiment of love, who is with you and in you always. Bereft of love, man cannot exist. Love is your life. Love is the light that dispels the darkness of ignorance. One who does not cultivate love will be born again and again. Punarapi Jananam Punarapi Maranam. Whoever is born will die one day and whoever dies will be born again. Birth and death are the Prabhava (effect) of the objective world. As he is deluded by the Prabhava, man is subjecting himself to Pramada (danger).

Embodiments of Love!
Worldly love is transient; it cannot be called love at all. True love is immortal. You should cultivate such love. Physical body grows and decays. How can you consider it to be real? In fact, nothing in this world is real. Body attachment is the cause of delusion. Hence, gradually reduce your body attachment. This is the most important sadhana you have to undertake. Japa (chanting), Thapa (penance), Dhyana (meditation), Yoga (communion with God), etc., do not constitute true sadhana. Whatever you consider to be real is in fact unreal. Whatever is unreal has to be given up. This truth has to be understood in the first instance. It is very easy to give up body attachment. I wonder why people are not able to do so!

You can see a number of bulbs glowing in this hall. But the electric current passing through them is the same. Bodies are like bulbs and the principle of Atma is like the current passing through all the bulbs. Understand this oneness and share your love with one and all. Do not consider anyone to be your enemy. You consider the one who loves you to be your friend and the one who hates you to be your foe. In fact, there is neither friend a nor a foe. It is only your imagination.

Today, people perform various sadhanas to experience divinity. Will God come closer to you because of these sadhanas or does He go away from you if you do not perform them? No. It is only the bhrama that goes away from you when you perform the sadhanas. As a result, you become closer to Brahma. You should make every effort to get rid of bhrama. Give up the feeling that you are the body and you are the doer. Only then can you be free from delusion and fear. Reduce your body attachment. That is the sadhana you are supposed to undertake. Spiritual practice does not lie in the performance of Japa , Thapa, Dhyana , etc. They are done only for your mental satisfaction and not for having the vision of God. Give up all these practices. Develop firm faith that you are God. Remind yourself constantly, "I am God, I am God, I am God". Then you will become God. Body is merely the vesture you have put on. It is not your true Self. As the body attachment increases, the suffering also increases.

Tyaja Durjana Samsargam; Bhaja Sadhu Samagamam; Kuru Punyam Ahorathram (Give up bad company; join good company and perform meritorious deeds day and night). In this world, you see many names and forms. Does it mean that they are all different from each other? No. All are one. It is only divinity that expresses itself as mother, father, brother, sister, etc. Names and forms may be different, but the underlying truth is one. When you keep this principle of truth in view, love will flow from you incessantly. Immerse yourself in the river of love. Do not give up love under any circumstances. Even if someone were to hate you, treat him as your own brother. If you were to meet him on the road, do not show anger; greet him with love. Your love will certainly bring about transformation in him. True happiness lies in the spirit of sacrifice. Thyaga (sacrifice) is the true Yoga. Man, today, does not cultivate Thyaga. On the other hand, he seeks Bhoga (pleasure) and thereby subjects himself to Roga (disease). When you develop the spirit of sacrifice, you will be free from suffering. True spiritual practice is that which helps you to overcome delusion. What is the use, if you get drowned in delusion more and more with the advancement of age?

I am not the body, nothing is mine." This is what you should know. Question yourself, "Who am I"? You will get the reply, "I am I". When you understand and experience this truth, nobody can cause any suffering to you. You cannot escape from suffering so long as you are immersed in the dualistic feeling that you are a mere mortal and God is separate from you. The feeling that "I am separate from you" is your own imagination. When 'I' and 'you' are joined together, it becomes 'we'. However, 'we' + 'He' (God) becomes only 'He' who is changeless. 'I' and 'you' change constantly.

Embodiments of Love!
Many people do sadhanas like Japa and Dhyana, but they are not of much use. However, they lead to some change in due course of time. They may confer temporary results but they cannot grant eternal bliss. You should not worry for temporary results. The feeling of 'I' and 'mine' is the root cause of worry. You will be haunted by worry so long as you don't realise Hari (God). You are worried because you identify yourself with the body. Once you identify yourself with the Self (God), you will be free from all worries. Hence, you should make every effort to realise your true Self. Under any circumstances, do not shed tears of sorrow. One will be free from sorrow when one gives up body attachment. In order to be free from worry and fear and to attain everlasting peace, you should realise that "I am I". When you have firm belief in this statement, nothing can shake you. Do not develop undue attachment to the body and material possessions. You will be redeemed only when you lead your life with a spirit of sacrifice. What you should achieve is Thyaga and not Bhoga. To consider something as yours ('mine') is Bhoga. To realise that nothing is yours ('not mine') is Yoga. This Yoga bestows on you the true strength.

Jesus performed various types of sadhanas and ultimately realised this truth. Once Mary and Joseph took their child Jesus to a fair in Jerusalem. In the crowd, the parents lost trace of Jesus and searched for him everywhere. All the while, Jesus was sitting in a corner of the temple and listening to the sermon of the priest. The parents were searching for him outside the temple. Mother Mary ultimately found him in the temple. She rushed towards him and affectionately embraced him saying, "My son, what happened to you? Where had you gone? We have been in search of you." Jesus told her, "Mother, I have not stepped out of the temple. I have been listening to the sermon of the priest. Why should you have any fear? Those who believe in the world will have fears. But, why should anyone believing in God, fear at all? I am in the company of my Father, why do you fear?"

Forgetting your innate divinity, you are in search of God in the external world. You are God yourself. Is it not foolishness to search for yourself in the outside world? Look within, only then can you find God. It is very easy to understand this oneness. However, you should have firm faith to begin with. You should believe that God is not separate from you. On a deep enquiry, you will realise that God is in you and also outside.

Embodiments of Love!
Turn your vision inward and search for your true Self. Self-enquiry leads to true Sakshatkara (vision of God). Once you have Sakshatkara, you will be free from all worries. It is a mistake to say that you have not experienced God. He is present in you. A person kept a ten rupee note in a book and forgot about it. He was carrying it all along. One day he was in need of ten rupees. He asked his friend to lend him ten rupees. His friend readily agreed. But before giving the money, his friend wanted to see the book he was carrying. As he opened the book, the ten rupee note fell from it. He was happy that he had the required amount with him and that there was no need to borrow it from his friend. Likewise, today man is in search of God, as he has forgotten his innate divinity. Man can realise God only by self-enquiry.

Embodiments of Love! Students!
You are making various efforts to experience Divinity. Do not search for God outside. He is in you. Everything is in you. All that you see outside is illusory. Do not be carried away by the illusory world. Only then can you attain peace and ultimately realise the truth "I am I". To know this simple truth, you need not go through various sacred texts. Keep the texts aside. Enjoy the taste of divinity within. Develop inner vision and visualise your true Self.

(Bhagavan concluded His Discourse with the Bhajan, "Bhaja Govindam …")

Chapter 1
The Bhagavatha

rozelotus.gif (8499 bytes)The name Bhagavatha can be applied to every account of the experiences of those who have contacted God and the Godly (Bhagavan and Bhaktha). God assumes many forms and enacts many activities. The name Bhagavatha is given to the descriptions of the experiences of those who have realised Him in those forms and of those who have been blessed by His Grace and chosen as His Instruments.

The great work known by that name is honoured by all masters of the Vedas. It is a panacea which cures physical, mental and spiritual illnesses. The Bhagavatha is saturated with sweetness of nectar, it shines with the splendour of God.

The principle of Avathara or the Descent of God on earth, the Incarnation of the Formless with Form, for the uplift of beings- this is the basic fact that makes the Bhagavatha authentic. By Bhagavatha we also mean those with attachment to God, those who seek the companionship of God. For such, the book, Bhagavatha, is most precious; it is the breath of their life. To be in the midst of such Bhagavathas is to foster one's own devotion. Unless you have a taste for God-ward thoughts, you will not derive joy therefrom. To create that taste the Bhagavatha relates stories relating to incarnations to the earnest inquirer. Then, one developes the yearning to experience the thrill of God, through all the levels of consciousness. He who has this intense yearning can be a true Bhagavatha.

People believe that incarnations of God happen only for two reasons: the punishment of the wicked and the protection of the righteous. But, these represent only one aspect of the task. The granting of peace and joy, of a sense of fulfilment to seekers who have striven long - this too is the task.

The Avathar, or Form Incarnate, is only the concretisation of the yearning of the seekers. It is the solidified sweetness of the devotion of godly aspirants. The formless assumes the Form for the sake of these aspirants and seekers.

They are the prime cause. The cow secretes milk for the sustenance of the calf. That is the chief beneficiary. But, as we see, others too benefit from that milk. So too, though the Bhakthas are the prime cause and their joy and sustenance the prime purpose, other incidental benefits also accrue, such as the fostering of Dharma, the suppression of evil, the overwhelming of the wicked.

There is no compulsive rule that incarnations should occur only on the earth and in human form. Any place, any form, can be chosen by the Fully-Free. Whichever place, whatever Form, promotes the purpose of fulfilling the yearning of the devotee, that place and that form are chosen by the will of God. God is above and beyond the limits of time and space. He is beyond all characteristics and qualities; no list of such can describe Him fully. For Him, all beings are equal. The difference between man, beast, bird, worm, insect and even a god is but a difference of the 'vessel' (the Upadhi).

It is like the electric current that flows through various contrivances and expresses itself in many different activities. There is no distinction in the current; it is the same. To speak of it as different is to reveal one's ignorance (Ajnana). So too, the one single God activates every vessel or Upadhi and gives rise to manifold consequences. The wise see only the one uniform current; the ignorant feel that they are all distinct. God appreciates the consciousness of unity, as the basic motive of acts. He does not appreciate the activity itself being one, without variety; it is suited to the various needs. The fruits of karma or activity appeal only to those who identify themselves with the body and not for the others, who know that they are the indestructible Atma.

Again, you must know that there is no end to the incarnations that God indulges in. He has come down on countless occasions. Sometimes He comes with a part of His glory, sometimes with a fuller equipment of splendor, sometimes for a particular task, sometimes to transform an entire era of time, an entire continent of space.

It is the story of the last of these, that the Bhagavatha elaborates. The drama enacted by the Avathara, and the Bhakthas drawn towards Him, is the subject matter of the Bhagavatha. Listening to it promotes the realisation of God. Many sages have testified to its efficacy and extolled the Bhagavatha, which they helped preserve for posterity.

Generally speaking, man gets drawn to sense objects for, he is the victim of instincts. Instincts easily seek sense-objects. They come along with the body and are not derived by any training. The infant seeks milk from the mother's breast; the new-born calf nestles at the udder. No training is needed for this. But, for the infant to walk and talk, some training is necessary. The reason is that they are not automatic; they are socially prompted, by example and by imitation of others.

Training is essential even for the proper pursuit of sense pleasure, for it is the wild untrained search for such pleasure that promotes anger, hatred, envy, malice, conceit. To train them along salutary lines and to hold them under control, certain good disciplines like Japa, Dhyana, Upavasa (Fasts) Sandhya-vandana (worship at dawn and dusk) etc. are essential. But, however much their value may be praised and their practice recommended people do not develop a taste for them. This is because the desire for sensory pleasure has struck deep roots in the human heart. When one is asked to do spiritually salutary acts, one has no inner prompting at all. Still one should not give up in despair. Until the taste sprouts, the disciplines have to be strictly followed. This taste is the result of training; no one has it from the very beginning. Constant practice will create the zest.

The infant does not know the taste of milk. By taking it daily, it develops an attachment for it which is so deep that when milk is to be given up and rice substituted, it starts to protest. But, the mother does not despair; she persuades the child to take small quantities of cooked rice daily and by this process it starts liking rice and it gives up milk. Milk was once its natural food, so natural that if no rice is available for a single day, it becomes miserable.

So, too, though sense-pleasures are "natural" at first, by means of practice and training and listening to the commendation of the wise, slowly the greater and more lasting pleasure derivable from the glories of the Lord and their recapitulation is grasped; thereafter, one cannot exist without that atmosphere even for a minute; one feels that there is nothing as sweet as the experience of listening to the splendor of the Lord. The company of the worldly who chatter about the senses and the sense-objects will no longer attract; the company which exults in praising the Lord will draw and hold.

This is the real hall-mark of the good. Sadhakas and votaries of the Lord are to be judged by these, not by external apparel or appearances. If one mixes with men who revel in sensory talks and activities, then, he puts himself out of court. Spend your time in the company of the godly, engaged in godly affairs. Avoid getting mixed with the company of the ungodly. Do not see their activities or listen to their accounts. Only those who avoid them can be called Bhagavathas, God's own.

Reading and enjoying the stories of the glory of Krishna in some sacred spot or some temple or prayer-hall shrine or hermitage of a saint or sage, or in the company of the virtuous and the good - that is a source of great inspiration and joy. It makes people forget everything else. Else, one can approach pious men and serving them, listen to their exposition of the glories of God. Taste for such wholesome literature is the result of accumulated merit and endeavour. It is that merit that rewards one with such company. Listening will be enough in the beginning; later, the stories will arouse interest in the nature and characteristics of God and the aspirant will seek and find for himself the path to realisation.

Listening to expositions by the wise is much better than reading oneself; or, one can be looking into the text while listening. It is preferable to listen in company, rather than alone; of course, it is excellent to listen with a number of earnest aspirants. If the person who expounds has had the thrill of genuine experience, then it is the supremest luck, for it yields best results. For, his face will blossom into joy, his eyes will shed tears of joy at the very contemplation of the glory of the Lord. Those who listen to him will catch that inspiration; they will experience the joy themselves. In the midst of a group that weeps, tears will spring out of the eyes of those who have come in; when an infant smiles, those around will also smile in unison. So too, the words of those who are saturated with devotion to God will saturate the hearts of those who listen. It is impossible to measure the profit that one can derive while in the company of the great.

Through that process of listening, a dirt-laden heart will be transformed into a clean illumined heart, shining with genuine light. To the foul odours of sense-pursuits, keenness to listen to the glories of God is a valuable disinfectant, besides being in itself so full of sweet fragrance. The listening will cleanse the heart through the prompting it gives for good work.

Such a cleansed heart is the most appropriate altar, or tabernacle. In that fragrant bower, the Lord will establish Himself; at that very moment, another incident too will happen; the group of six vices that had infested the place will quit without so much as a farewell.

When these vices quit, the wicked retinue of evil tendencies and vulgar attitudes which live on them will break camp and disappear, without leaving even their addresses! Then, man will shine in his native splendour of Truth and Love (Sathya and Prema); he will endeavour without hindrance, to realise himself; and, finally, he will succeed, in merging with the Universal and Eternal. He will liberate himself from the tangle of ignorance, or Maya. His mind will fade away; the long-hidden secret will be revealed to him; he will discover his Madhavathwa (Divinity).

Man's nature is Prema, Love. He cannot survive a moment, when deprived of Love. It is the very breath of his life. When the six vices, to which he was attached so long, disappear, Love is the only occupant of the heart; but, Love has to find an object, a Loved one. It cannot be alone. So, it is directed to the dark-blue Divine Child, the charming cowherd Boy, who is Purity Personified, who is the embodiment of service, sacrifice and self-lessness, who has taken residence in that cleansed Altar. There is no scope now for any other attachment to grow. So, step by step, this Love for Madhava becomes deeper, purer, more self denying, until at last, there is no other need for thought and the individual is merged in the Universal.

When Vâsudeva enters the heart of man, vasudeva has no longer a place therein. In other words, when the deva of vasu or wealth is seated in the heart, the divine Vâsudeva or Krishna cannot dwell therein.

Any attempt to accommodate both in the heart is bound to fail. Darkness and light cannot exist at the same time and in the same place; they cannot continue together. Dhanam and Daivam cannot be joint ideals; when Dhanam or riches are sought, Daivam or God cannot also be achieved. If both are sought by man what he will achieve will be neither Dhanam nor Daivam but Dayyam (the Devil).

It is creditable if man behaves as man; it is laudable if he behaves as the Madhava, he really is. But, to behave as a demon or as a beast is despicable indeed. For, man was long born a mineral and died a mineral; then, he promoted himself as a tree. He was long born a tree and died as a tree; but, in the process, he got promoted as an animal; but, he has now risen into the status of man. This rise from one scale to another has been acknowledged by science and spiritual experience. Now, alas! he is born as man and dies as man. It is a greater shame if he slides into the beast or a beastly ogre. Praise is his due, only if he rises to the Divine status. That is real fulfilment of his destiny. Therefore, avoid contact with vices; develop attachment to virtues; transmute the heart into an altar for the Lord; destroy all the shoots and sprouts of desire; then, your Manasa-sarovaram (the Lake of your Inner Consciousness) will be sublimated into a Ksheera-sagara, (the Pure Ocean of Milk, whereon the Lord reclines on the Serpent-couch). Your real Self will, like the Celestial Hamsa, revel in the placid waters of that Lake, thus transformed. It will discover endless delight.

Who can mark the beginning of the continuous waves of the ocean? It is an impossible task. If any one decided to do so, the wave with which he starts the calculation will be considered as the beginning, the wave with which he stops his calculation will be for him the last, the end. There is a beginning and an end for his count: there is no beginning or end for the process. No one can visualise either, in that boundless illimitable expanse. God's Glory is the shoreless ocean. When one starts describing it, it begins for him; when he finishes his description it is the end, so far as he is concerned. But, His Glory is beyond space and time. Only little minds, limited minds, will argue that God's Glory has a beginning and an end. The stage on which He plays (His Leela) has no boundaries.

The story of His Leela is all Nectar; it has no other component, no other taste, no other content. Every one can drink his fill, from any part of that Ocean of Nectar. The same sweetness exists everywhere, in every particle. There is nothing inferior to mar the sweetness.

The love of God and the love for God are both eternally sweet and pure, whatever the method of your accepting or attaining them. Such love is holy and inspiring. Sugar is sweet when eaten during day or during the night. For it is night or day for the person who eats, not for the sugar. Sugar behaves uniformly always.

The Aura of Sri Sathya Sai Baba

by Dr. Gamini Karunanayake
M.B.B.S. (Cey.) D.I.H. R.C.P. (Lond). R.C.S. (Eng).

Many people believe that all great saints and religious leaders have a large aura or halo around their bodies.

Pictures and drawings of Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Prophet Mohamed and Sai Baba clearly highlight this halo or aura.

Most people believed that this so called aura as depicted in the drawings was a myth and that the haloes were highlighted in order to enlighten the people about the greatness of these saints.

Is this halo or aura a reality or Myth ?

It is known that certain people especially those who are developed spiritually are able to see these auras.

In recent times it has been scientifically established that the halo around people is a reality.

An ultra sensitive camera called the ‘Kirilian camera’ originally produced in 1939 in Russia and subsequently re - invented in 1969 by an American called " Kendell Johnson" is able to photograph the haloes around people.

Professor Frank Baranowski; an American scientist attached to the University of Arizona has specialized in Bio - magnetic field radiation photography. He has photographed and interpreted the auras of many people with the ultra sensitive Kirilian camera. He possesses Kirilian photographs showing the energy rays and colours emanating from different people. It has been found that every one of us has an aura surrounding our bodies which extends to about 6 inches from our bodies. In people who are highly developed spiritually like saints and yogis. This aura extends to about 2 feet from their bodies. The colour of the aura varies from white to pink and blue.

The white in the aura indicates energy and the pink and blue indicate that the person is extending love and compassion towards others.

Professor Baranowski explains there are five different shades of auras denoting aesthetic, spiritual, intellectual, physical and moral aspects. These can all be scientifically explained. Professor Baranowski who had studied the auras of the great saints and yogis of India had heard about Sri Sathya Sai Baba. He went to White field in India and studied the aura around Sai Baba with the help of the Kirilian camera.

He was left breathless by the aura and colours emanating from the body of Sai Baba. Large thick bands of white, pink and blue flowed out from Baba’s body. The most amazing thing was that there were thick bands of gold and silver in the aura which he had never seen in any other human being.

These rays of love and energy emanating from Baba were enveloping the massive crowd at Darshan who had come to see him.

These people were absorbing the rays of energy and love given out by Baba. His aura extended to envelope the area in one mass or cloud of pink. It was all energy in the form of love that flowed from him.

It is said that people who go to see "Sai Baba" come back with renewed energy. It is like charging ones battery.

What about the size of the aura?

It was earlier stated that saints and spiritually developed people have an aura extending up to two feet from their bodies. It is also said that Lord Buddha had an aura which enveloped an entire city.

The aura extending from Baghavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba was so huge that its margin could not be defined. The aura extended beyond the horizon.

Professor Baranowski has concluded that Baba is not a human being and that he is a divine personality.

"Sai Baba" in his own words say that we are all God. He knows that he is God, whereas we do not know that we are God, although we have the potential to be God.

Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba's Birthday falling on 23-11-2003
Shiv-Shakti Avtar

By Purshotam Bargotra

''There is only one Nation, the Nation of Mankind,

There is only one Religion, the Religion of Love;

There is only one Language, the Language of Heart;

There is only one God and He is Omnipresent.'' --Baba

Several thousands of pairs of open eyes and folded pairs of hands are found directed towards the entry gate from which Bhagwan Baba appears for 'Darshan'. Every devotee stretches himself like a calf to reach udder of its mother for nourishing sustenance. A total calm prevails. The breath stills, body consciousness is lost one-ness of souls is experienced. There is Divinity through and through. Bhagwan showers His grace in abundance on concourse of His devotees.

Four hundred years intensive and incessant study of Vedas could not help sage Bhardwaj's yearning for Supreme Knowledge. Recognizing the saddened Sage's magnificent passion, Indra suggested him to propitiate Mother Parvathi. The sage decided to hold a 'Yajna' and reached the abode of Lord Siva to invite Divine Mother. He stood still in the snow-clad Kailasa for 8 days witnessing Ishwara and His Consort dancing in Ecstacy. Exhausted, the sage suffered paralytic stroke and broke down. Immediately the Divine couple rushed to his help. Lord Siva sprinkled Holy water on Him and cured. Bhardwaja was also granted a boon that Lord Siva himself will incarnate in Kaliyuga thrice. The First Shive Incarnation was born as a third child to a pious couple Devagiriamma and Ganga Bhavida in Village Patri near Manmad (Maharashtra) and He is Sri Baba of Shirdhi. The Third Incarnation will be Prema Sai.

The Second Incarnation is Shiv-Shakti Avtar Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba who had chosen Himself Mother Easwaramma and Sri Pedda Venkama Raju as parents of His physical body. Sathya was born as their fourth child on 23rd Nov, 1926, in Ratnakar family in a tiny village known as Puttaparthi (Distt Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh). The village had then a few mud-huts infested with mush-roomed ant-hills and barren land. The child was named Sathya or Raju in His childhood. Beloved of every body in the village, handsome and loving Raju brimmed with compassion and unbounded love. Strict vegetarian and disciplinarian, He felt sad over bull-fights, bull-races, cock-fights and other acts of cruelty to animals. A born scholar with unbounded wisdom, He was proficient in composing and singing 'Bhajans' and poetry. He excelled in dance and drama. Like Yashoda to Krishna, Subamma was to Sathya. Subamma lived in the next house and Sathya spent most of the time in her care. She showered unlimited motherly affection on the child and served Baba till her end. Baba was away when Subamma shed her mortal coils. Just before her cremation, He returned to Puttaparthi and called the dead Subamma! Subamma! and Lo! and Hail! she promptly responded the Divine call, smilingly opened her eyes and feasted her eyes with Baba's 'Darshan' to her fill. Baba poured the sacred water in her mouth as promised and she shut her eyes slowly and peacefully returned to her eternal home. This is how her last wish was fulfilled.

Sathya made declaration of His Avtarhood on 23 May, 1940, saying '' I am Sai Baba'', On 20th Oct, 1940, He threw His school-bag and as Sathya Sai Baba started His Mission of Transformation of Mankind. It is now over 63 years that His Divine Message and Mission have widely spread in every nook and corner of the world.

Baba's Divine-plays are unique. He possesses unlimited powers. From the Chitravathi River Dry-Beds, He would bring out idols of Gods and Goddesses, sweets, brass vessels full of nector and many other objects. Even in His childhood from His school-bag, He would materialize and distribute to His school-mates pencils, note-books and sugar-candies. He materialized all kinds of fruits, from the same Tamarind tree, called it Kalpvriksha (wish -fulfilling tree) and distributed these among His devotees. Baba's abode is Prasanthi Nilayam (the Supreme peace-conferring place) to which millions of devotees from more than 180 countries throng for Divine 'Darshan'. Some of them are interviewed, heard patiently and given Divine counselling. Heaps of mail is received daily from devotees from all over the world. Besides, Baba also receives letters from devotees sitting in the 'Darshan' lines. Prayers of devotees are answered and Grace granted to seekers. He cures deadly diseases, removes pains and sufferings, averts air crashes and fatal accidents. He drives His devotees safely to their destinations who fall asleep at the steering of their motor cars. He makes five elements of nature to obey His command. He materializes chains, rings, pendants, necklaces and idols for the deserving devotees.

Devotees have their own connections with Baba. They have their own experiences. His Vibhuti coupled with unflinching faith in Him can cure and any deadly disease, heal any grievous injury and ward off any evils. Just over a week's time before First Test Match against Australia was to begin, Sunil Gavaskar got his thigh-muscle torn. Physiotherapists had declared that it would take him four weeks to be fit to play. However, Baba's Vibhuti cured him within 3 days. Baba's patting Sachin Tendulkar on the back assuring him that ''I am with you'' worked wonders. Baba visits thousands houses all over the world at any one point of time revealing His omnipresence through Vibhuti, honey, dry fruits which appear before His images and photographs.

The word Sai of three letters has great inner significance for S stands for Service (work). A for Adoration (worship ) and I for Illumination (widsom), that is, Seva or Karma, Bhakti, Gyan leading to Ultimate Liberation. Sai also stands for Tansformation at Spiritual Association and Individual Levels.

Sri Sathya Sai Sewa Organization have three wings, namely, Service Wing, Spiritual Wing and Educational Wing operating throughout the world. His message of manifestation of inherent Human Values, namely, Truth, Right Eousness, Peace, Love and Non-Violence is bringing Transformation all over the world. Love is the sustenance for all the other four values.

Love as thought is Sathya,

Love as action is dharma,

Love as feeling is shanti, and

Love as understanding is Ahimsa.

Man is innately Divine and Bliss is his nature. Divinity is the foundation and source of his existence. ''Promote the religion of Love'', ''Promote Morality'' says Bhagwan Baba. He says Man of three letters stands for Maya, Atma and Nirvana, Overcome MAYA, have the vision of ATMA and attain NIRVANA. He calls ABC of life, Always Be Careful or Avoid Bad Company. ''Love All, Serve All''. ''Help Ever, Hurt Never.' Hands that serve are Holier than the lips that pray''. Atma glows when ego goes.''

Divine Nectar - Let us recollect what Baba said

An offering of a glimpses of  Swami's discourses compiled and lovingly shared by a devotee.

The mind must become the servant of the intellect, not the slave of the senses

Sairam,

Prashaanthi Nilayam, 1962

Parashuraama came across Raama and challenged him when he was returning to Ayodhya after his marriage. He had won Seetha by bending and breaking the bow of Shiva and thereby humbled the pride of all the crowned heads that had come seeking Seetha's hand. But, Parashuraama was intoxicated with his own achievement in defeating the Kshathriya rulers in twenty-one campaigns. That pride lowered the Divine status of Parashuraama and so, he could be felled in a moment by Raama who was to all appearance just a stripling! Only experience can reveal the sweetness, the sublimity and the purpose of lord's Glory.

I have come as an Avathaar when the saints, Saadhus and sages (the pious) prayed and awaited anxiously. My tasks are Vedharakshana and Bhaktharakshana---fostering of the Vedhas and fostering of Bhakthas (devotees). Know that you are saved and be confident that you will be liberated. Become entitled to the honoured title of Bhaktha. Your virtue, your self-control, your detachment, your faith and your steadfastness---these are the signs by which people read of my glory. You can lay claim to be Bhaktha only when you have placed yourself in My hands, fully, completely, with no trace of ego.

Bhakthi (devotion) is faith, steadiness, virtue, fearlessness, surrender and absence of egoism. Puuja done however elaborately and pompously is sheer waste of time and energy. Many of you go round the temple and satisfy yourselves that you have done so many pradakshinas (circum-ambulations), but, they can be called so only when your mind circles this place along with your feet.

While your feet are taking you round by force of habit, your tongues blabber about the faults of others, or the price of vegetables, or the dishes you propose to cook for lunch. Before you start on your pra-dakshina, give your mind as dakshina (thanksgiving offering) to the Resident of the temple, the Lord. That is the first the only thing to do. Pradakshina is not to be taken as prescribed for loosening the limbs or giving them some exercise.

You do not bloom as fragrant offerings at the Lord's feet by learning the saadhana path. The senses have to be curbed into obedient servants of the spirit. Do not thrust your sorrows, your needs and your problems into the ears of those who have come to you with their own bundle of such things. They are not interested in adding to their troubles. Do not disturb with your loud voice those who are meditating or reading or writing the name of God. Talk less and talk low when you must talk.

The drug that can cure one's ignorance of real nature that affects thoughts, words and deeds is patented under different names: jnaana, karma, upaasana (contemplation) and bhakthi. They are all the same in potency, and curative power. The difference lies only in the method of administration either as mixture or as tablet or injection.

People learn details about China, Russia and America; they know about the volcanoes of the Pacific or the islands of the Arctic regions but they do not know an iota about the features of their own inner realms. Everyone of you have five Realms but you are aware (but not full knowledge) only of the outermost realm, the Annamaya kosha (the material casement), in which they are housed. There are deeper layers of which you are ignorant---the Praanamaya (sheath of vital energy), the Manomaya (mental sheath), the Vijnaanamaya (sheath of intelligence) and the Aanandhamaya (sheath of Divine Bliss). Those who are conscious only of the Annamaya kosha, can claim to be only just Kaarnaswaruupa, not Raamaswaruupa (embodiment of desire but not of Raama). They will be swayed by every gust of kaama (desire).

If possible, Meditate yourselves alone; read spiritual books if you can; write the name of the Lord in the quiet of your corner; if you cannot do these, at least do not disturb others who are doing these. Encourage one another to march along the path to God. The mind must become the servant of the intellect, not the slave of the senses. It must discriminate and detach itself from the body. Like the ripe tamarind fruit, which becomes loose inside the shell, it must be unattached to this shell, this casement called body.

Christmas

"The term Christmas has been derived from the Roman language. Truly speaking, Christmas falls in the month of March, not in December. Since it is very cold in December and people are confined to their homes, they utilize this time to celebrate Christmas. Actually, Jesus was born in the month of March. With the passage of time, this fact has been distorted and misrepresented in the Bible. Opinions vary from person to person (Munde Munde Matir Bhinnah). Each one interpreted the Bible in his own way. Some wrote that it was the brother of Jesus who was crucified, not Jesus and that he was in Japan all that time. This is all imagination. Jesus is truth." Sai Baba, SS. 1/99. pp. 5 & 6.

Purpose Of Christmas Celebration

"This day is a holy day, the day on which Jesus was born. He announced Himself as the Messenger of God. In fact, all humans are bom as Messengers of God. The sole purpose of this human career is to propagate the omnipresence of God, His might and glory. No one has incarnated for merely consuming quantities of food and catering to one's senses. Human life is much more precious than that. That is why the capacity to appreciate beauty, truth and goodness has been endowed only on man." Sai Baba, SSS. Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-76, p. 84

"Religions arise from the minds of good men, who crave to make all men good. They strive to eliminate the evils and cure the bad. It is therefore appropriate that the birthday of Jesus, who felt the need to save mankind and who strove to achieve it, be celebrated. But the celebration must take the form of adherence to the teachings, loyalty to the principles, practising the discipline and experiencing the awareness of the Divine that He sought to arouse. These days, the world is deriving satisfaction in mere words, and in witnessing clever ruses designed to cover up one's faults. The birthdays of the Great are honoured by such hypocrisy and external pomp. There is no examination in the light of the message they gave, nor, any effort to practise it and derive the bliss it promises". Sai Baba, SSS. Vol. VIII, discourse on 25-12-72. p. 129

Christmas Belongs To All

"The birthday of Jesus must be celebrated by all mankind, for such 'Karana-Janmas' (Masters born with a purpose) belong to the whole human race. They should not be confined to a single country or community." Sai Baba, SSS, Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-78, p. 232

Jesus' Original Name

"Jesus was honoured by the populace as Christ, for they found in his thoughts, words and deeds, no trace of ego. He had no envy or hatred, and was full of love and charity, humility and sympathy. Jesus' original name was 'Isa' which, when repeated, is Sai. 'Isa' and 'Sai', both mean Ishvara, God, the Eternal Absolute, the Sat-Chit-Ananda. In the Tibetan manuscript at the monastery, where Isa spent some years. His name is written as 'ISSA', which means the Lord of all beings." Sai Baba, Vol. X. discourse on 25-12-78. p. 231

Meaning Of Jesus

"In Christianity, the term 'Esu' (Jesus) is used to describe Christ. This term also signifies the oneness of Divinity. The inner significance of the term 'Esu' is the recognition of the One Divine in all beings."   Sai Baba, SS,~ 1/92'. p.2  "Jesus is truth." Sai Baba, SS. 1/99, p. 6

Birth Date Of Jesus Christ

"There are various theories about the birth date of Jesus based on the "bright star" that appeared at his birth. It is visible once in 800 years, it is said. Some say that He was bom on the fifteenth day of September. But He was born at 3:15 a.m. (early morning) on December 28. It was Sunday. The star that appeared that day appears only once in 800 years. Its appearance had nothing to do with the birth of Jesus. There is no rule that, when Divine Energy or Divine Incarnation descends on earth, a star has to appear. That is the opinion of devotees only. But, Jesus was himself a "Star" of infinite value, spreading brilliance of infinite dimension. Why posit another less brilliant glow?" Sai Baba. SSS, Vol. XI. p. 13

Birth Place Of Jesus Christ

'Two thousand years ago, in Palestine, a province of the Roman Empire, there were Jews professing Judaism. The Jews believed in one God called' Yehovah'. They believed that God would send a messiah for the people of Israel. Jerusalem was the sacred city of the Jews and continued to be so even under the Romans. This was the time when Jesus was bom." Sai Baba. SS, 1/92, p. 3

"Jesus' birth took place in a manger in Bethlehem." Sai Baba. SS. 1/89. p. 2

Visit Of Three Kings To See Christ At His Birth

"It is said that when Jesus was born in a manger, three kings were led by a star to Jesus' place of birth. In fact, they were not kings but three shepherds. One of them, seeing the infant Jesus observed: 'This child will be lover of God'. A second one said: 'No. God will love him.' The third one said: 'Verily he is God Himself. The true significance of these three statements is: To love God is to be His messenger. To be loved by God is to be a son of God. The final state is to be one with God. As Jesus said: 'I and my Father are one'. Thus, all persons are messengers of God. This means that they should divinise themselves. When can men call themselves 'sons of God'? Recognise what pure actions are done by God, selflessly for the sake of all. There is no trace of self-interest in Him. Everything men do, speak, or think is born out of selfishness. Men can describe themselves as 'Sons of God' only when they are completely free from selfishness and become Godly. To call yourself the 'son of God', you have to manifest the qualities of the Father." Sai Baba, SS. 1/95. p. 4

Enlightenment Of Jesus

"Like most seekers, Jesus first searched for the Divine in the objective world. But He soon realised that the world is a kaleidoscopic picture created by one's own imagination, and sought to find God within himself. His stay in the Himalayan monasteries in Kashmir and in other centres of eastern asceticism and philosophical inquiry, gave him greater awareness. From the attitude of being a 'Messenger of God', he could now call himself the 'Son of God'. The bond of relationship increased. The 'I' was no more distant light or entity. The light became a part of the 'I'. With body-consciousness predominant. He was a messenger. With the heart-consciousness in the ascendant. He felt greater nearness and deamess. So, the son-father bond seems natural at this stage. Later as the Atman-Consciousness was established, Jesus could declare: 'I and My Father are One'. The three stages may be described as: 'I was in the Light', 'the Light was in me', and 'I am the Light', and may compared to the Dwaita (dualism), Vishishta-adwaita and Adwaita (non-dualism) stages as described in Hindu philosophy. The final stage is the one when all duality has been shed. This is the essence of all religious disciplines and teachings". Sai Baba, SSS, X, discourse on 25-12-78. p. 231

"Christ spent all His life in the service of mankind. He spent twelve years alone, promoting the inner vision and realising God. While engaged in the service to the diseased and the downtrodden, He announced Himself as the 'Messenger of God'. Later on, for some years Christ reflected the divine nature present in Him and came to the conclusion that he was the 'son of God'. Thus He moved closer to God. Christ lived for five years in the Himalayan region of Bharat (India). He settled in Kashmir and met many exponents and practitioners of the Adwaita system of thought, which declares there is only one God. He realised the One-ness beneath diversity, then He spread the truth that 'I and My Father are one.' Sai Baba, SSS, Vol. X. p. 142

"When Jesus proclaimed that He was the 'Messenger of God', He wanted to emphasize that everyone is messenger of God and has to speak, act and think like one. This is the true Karma (action) Kanda of the Vedas: Sadhana, Japa, Seva and Dhyana. When progress is furthered, Jesus asserted, each one can recognise all as 'sons of God', children of God, brothers and sisters of oneself, and so. The Upaasana (adoration of God) Kanda is the scripture in Sanatana Dharma (eternal code of conduct) for this stage. Finally, knowledge ripens into wisdom and the goal ofJnana (wisdom) Kanda is reached, when each one realises, 'I and my Father are one'. Sai Baba. SSS, Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-78. pp. 232-233

Early Life Of Jesus

"Jesus exemplified the spirit of social service. The inspiration for this came from his mother Mary. From His childhood Mary taught Him such good qualities as truth, kindness, compassion and justice. In his twelfth year, Jesus and his parents went to Jerusalem for a festival. In the crowd, the parents lost the trace of Jesus and searched for Him everywhere. Not finding Him anywhere, Mary sat under a tree and prayed to God to come to her help. At that moment, a thought flashed in her mind that Jesus was perhaps in a nearby temple. Jesus was there sitting in a comer of the temple and listening to the words of the priest. Mary affectionately rushed towards Him and embraced him. 'Child, what agony I went through on your account', she said. Jesus told her: 'Mother! Why should you have any fear? Those who believe in the world will have fears. But why should anyone believing in God fear at all? I am in the company of my Father. Why do you fear? You taught Me that God is everything for us. How, then, can you worry like this?' Jesus had learnt His lessons from his mother and developed His spiritual faith. After they returned from Jerusalem, Jesus felt that service to His parents was His foremost duty, because He owed everything to them. In this spirit, He used to assist His father in his carpentry work. When Joseph, His father, passed away, He sought His mother permission to devote Himself to the service of the needy and the forlorn." Sai Baba. SS, 1/95. p. 3

Jesus's Ministry

After leaving home, Jesus had Himself baptized by John. Then for forty days, Jesus observed severe austerities without food and drink. At first he considered Himself as a 'Messenger of God'. After the penance, He realised He was the 'son of God'. He began His ministry with a group of fishermen as His first disciples. He taught them that they should first seek the 'Kingdom of Heaven.' To enter that Kingdom, they had to cultivate loving hearts. Then, their hearts would become the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus further declared to them: T and my Father are one'. Sai Baba. SS, 1/95. p. 3

"As Jesus went on with His preaching and drew multitudes towards him, some of the priests and those in authority grew envious of His popularity. This happens in all countries. They started persecuting Him and charging Him with treason. Jesus, however, continued His mission of love and righteousness, first, as the Messenger of God, and later as the son of God." Sai Baba, SS, 1/89, p. 3

"How did Jesus get the courage to speak in this fashion? It was because He was proclaiming the truth. Truth is bom out of love, which comes from faith in God

Where there is confidence, there is love.

Where there is love, there is peace.

Where there is peace, there is truth.

Where there is truth, there is bliss.

Where there is bliss, there is God.

This-is way to develop faith in God

Sai Baba, SS. 1/88, p. 4

Jesus's Mission

"Jesus was a Karana-janma, a Master bom with a purpose, the mission of restoring love, charity and compassion. He had no attachment to the self, nor paid any heed to joy or sorrow, loss or gain. He had a heart that responded to the call of anguish. He went about the land preaching the lesson of love. His life was a libation for the upliftment of humanity". Sai Baba, Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-78, p. 230

"Love must be manifested as service. Seva (human service) must take the form of food for the hungry, solace for the forlorn, consolation for the sick and the suffering. Jesus wore Himself out in such Seva." Sai Baba, SSS, Vol XI, discourse on 25-12-81. p. 225

The Inner Meaning Of Jesus's Teaching Given On His Last Supper

"Jesus said that the bread taken in the 'last supper' was his flesh, and the wine his blood. He meant that all beings alive with flesh and blood are to be treated as He Himself and that no distinction should be made between friend or foe, we or they. Everybody, sustained by the bread, every drop flowing in the veins of every living being is His (God), animated by the activity that the wine imparted to it. That is to say, every man is Divine and has to be revered as such." Sai Baba. SSS, Vol. X. Discourse on 25-12-78. pp. 232 & 233

Jesus's Spiritual Work

"Jesus announced Himself as a 'Messenger of God'. He spent many years in austerities so that He could shower compassion and love on all humanity. Later, He asked Himself: 'Am I just a messenger, or am I more closely related to God, a part of God with the Divine as my essence?' Jesus spent twelve years wandering alone in deserts engaged in this inquiry. At the end of this period. He returned to the society of men and announced, 'I am the son of God'. At this time, the priests of the holy temples of Jerusalem had become corrupt and commercialized. They had deteriorated into proud and selfish men. Jesus condemned them and tried to root out the evil practices. For, all forms, in th^ eyes of Jesus, were Divine Forms. He could not tolerate any action, which belied this status. So, when asked by people who He was. He could reply: 'I and my Father are One'. Jesus tried to teach the Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of man. Tradition-minded and egoistic men considered Jesus a false prophet and they tried by every means to thwart His mission. Jesus, however, did not waver. Faced with opposition. He continued to be an example of living truth, and tried to purify the society." Sai Baba. SSS. Vol. XI, pp. 11 & 12.

"Jesus found that scholars and ritualistic had befogged the true religion. He engaged Himself in teaching both spirituality and morality, for education is the very light of life. Jesus found that people are running after glass-beads, imagining them to be diamonds and  attaching great value to them. He went round the holy shrines and discovered that they had become bazaars where (God's) grace was being bartered and commercialized. He condemned the priesthood, which tolerated and encouraged these practices. So, He drew upon Himself the anger of the heads of temples and monasteries". Sai Baba, Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-78, p. 232

"Jesus was compassion (Karuna) came in human form. He spread the spirit of compassion and conferred solace on the distressed and the suffering. Noticing the torture of birds and beasts at the temple in Jerusalem, He reprimanded the vendors and drove them out of the precincts." Sai Baba, SSS, XI, discourse on 25-12-81, p. 224

Disciples Of Jesus

"Many disciples followed Jesus. But throughout history, it has been the experience of Rama, Krishna, Jesus and Muhammad that disciples, however close, are seldom fully dedicated. Most are only part-time devotees. Jesus had 12 disciples. Most of them had faith in Him and lived up to His teachings. But, Judas yielded to greed. He betrayed his Master for a mere 30 silver coins. He could not find joy in life after this treachery. His mind gave him no peace. He had to take refuge in suicide. Betrayal by people who pretend to adore (their Masters) is happening since ages. Corrupt, greedy and selfish people spread falsehoods about their own Masters. We hear of Judas. 2000 years ago. But in the Kali age, people are obsessed with money

and Judases have multiplied. They seek to amass paltry riches, whereas good character, good conduct and knowledge of God are the three real treasures to be gathered."

Sai Baba. SSS. Vol. XI, discourse on 25-12-79, p. 12

John

"Vedanta says, 'Brahmavid Brahmaiva Bhavati.', the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman himself. John resembled Jesus in all respects, as he constantly contemplated on Him. As you think, so you become. If you think of God incessantly, you will assume His form." Sai Baba. SS. 1/99. p. 4

Paul

"Initially, Paul hated Jesus. One day, Jesus appeared in his dream and asked him lovingly, 'Paul! What harm have I done to you, why do you criticize me? All your travails are the consequences of your own actions. I am not responsible for your sufferings.' Then Paul was transformed and attained sainthood. Thus, Jesus transformed many sinners into-saints. Sai Baba, SS, 1/99, p. 5

"Speak softly and sweetly with a smiling face. That will silence the critic. Smile is the best answer to criticism. When Paul went on accusing Jesus, He lovingly went to him and gave a pleasing smile. The sweetness in the nectarine smile of Jesus transformed the poisonous heart of Paul." Sai Baba. SS, 1/99, p. 7

Matthew And Thomas

"Matthew was a tax collector. He would meet fishermen regularly and enquire as to how they acquired faith in Jesus. Thomas used to doubt the divinity of Jesus. Such doubting Thomases are on the rise. Never be in the company of such people." Sai Baba, SS, 1/99, p. 5

Disciples At The Time Of Jesus Crucification

"One has to worship God both in times of pain and pleasure. Unfortunately, due to the effect of Kali Age, people worship Him when everything goes well, but criticize Him in times of difficulties. When it was ordered that all the devotees of Jesus should be crucified along with Him, even His closest devotees, Peter, Matthew, and Paul refused to identify themselves. Can these be called true devotees? One should be prepared to sacrifice everything for the sake of God." Sai Baba. SS. 1/99. p. 4

Crusification Of Jesus

"They (heads of temples and monasteries) tempted one His (12) disciples with 30 silver pieces, to betray Him into their hands. The Roman rulers were told that Jesus attempted to assert himself as King and so could be punished for treason. Their insistence made the Governor order his crucifixion. When the nails were being driven into him to fix him on the cross, Jesus heard the Voice of the Father saying, "All life is one. My dear son. Be alike to everyone," and He pleaded that those who were crucifying Him be pardoned, for they knew not what they did. Jesus sacrificed Himself for the sake of mankind". Sai Baba. SSS. Vol. X. discourse on 25-12-78, p. 232

"When Jesus was on the cross and overcome with agony, an unseen Voice said from Heaven: "Death is the dress of life." The body is the dress, which the Divine Spirit puts on. Therefore, we should not weep when the body is worn out or falls or is injured. Death is an event, that is the very nature of the body. Men seek the cause for death, but no one seeks the Divine source of life." Sai Baba, SSS. Vol. XI, discourse on 25-12-79. p. 14

The Inner Meaning Of Making A Christan Cross Sign By Hands

You should not be afraid of difficulties. They are passing 'clouds. Do not waver. Follow the heart, which is steady and unwavering. Unity of head, heart and hand is essential for man. This is the true significance behind the Christians making cross sign by hands (Swami made a sign of holy cross to show how it covers heart, hands and head). Install God in your heart. Contemplate on Him and undertake good deeds. Consider every activity as God's work and act accordingly." Sai Baba. SS. 1/99. p. 3

Sacrifice Of Jesus Christ

"People talk of Christ's sacrifice as evidenced by his crucifixion. But, he was surrounded and bound, and crowned by the crowd who captured him with the crown of thorns, and later, nailed to the cross by his captors. A person bound and beaten by the police cannot say that he has sacrificed everything, for he is not a free man. Let us pay attention to the sacrifice that Jesus made while free, out of his own volition. He sacrificed his happiness, prosperity, comfort, safety and position. He braved the enmity of the powerful. He refused to yield or compromise. He renounced the ego, which is the toughest thing to get rid of. Honour Him for these. He willingly sacrificed the desires with which the body torments man. This sacrifice is greater than the sacrifice of the body under duress. The celebration of His birthday has to be marked by sacrificing your at least one desire or two, and conquering at least the more disastrous urges of ego." Sai Baba. SSS. Vol. VIIJ, 25-12-72

Important Christian Days

"Jesus was crucified on a Friday and He rose from the tomb on a Sunday. That is why Sunday is taken as the day of worship and service in churches. Catholics give importance to Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ, while Protestants give importance to the birth of Christ. Catholics celebrate Christmas by worshipping Mary on the evening of 24th (of December) and Protestants celebrate the birth of Christ on the 25th (of December)". Sai Baba, SS, 1/93, p. 4 '

"Today is New Year's Day associated with the birth and life of Jesus. It is a good occasion to give up the old and welcome the new- in thought, word and deed." Sai Baba. SSS, Vol. X, p. 141

The Christmas Tree

"There is a custom of putting up a Christmas tree on this day. The genesis of this custom can be traced to Germany. A preacher by name Jensen from England once visited Germany. When he was travelling in Germany on his mission, he noticed some Germans attempting to offer a child's life as sacrifice to propitiate God who, they believed, lived in an oak tree. The priest was warned and questioned-them as to why they were offering an innocent child as sacrifice to a tree. As they asserted that God lived in the tree, he took an axe and cut the tree. To his surprise, he was shaken by the inexplicable vibration from head to foot. He noticed the form of a child between the two portions of the tree that was cut by him. This incident teaches the truth that God lives not only in human beings but also in plants and trees. From that time onwards people started putting up a Christmas tree." Sai Baba, SS, 1/93, p. 4

True Christians

"Today is the birthday of Jesus, celebrated amidst December snow-falls, with lights and Christmas trees, and prayers. But it is useless to pray just one day and forget God, during the rest of year. That is empty show. It does not emanate from the heart. We are true Christians only when we live according to the teachings of Christ and practise them in daily life. Even if we follow two teachings of His, that would be enough." Sai Baba. SSS. Vol. XI, discourse on 25-12-79, pp. 13 & 14.

Sai's Teachings For Christians And Others

"There are many who are deeply devoted to Jesus. Their duty is to glorify the great message of Jesus. The most important of message of Jesus is the establishment of 'Peace on earth and goodwill among men.' At present there is a growing tendency among propagators of the Christian faith to cast aspersions on other religions. Money is being spent lavishly to spread Christianity. None of you should play any part in such activities. This type of propaganda does great harm to the personality of Jesus. Jesus was supremely pure and sacred person. To forget Jesus' teachings and to profess love for Him is no love at all. You must remember: 'God is one. Love is God. Live in love.' Only by this means can humanity, despite the many divisions that exist at present, be united. Absorb the teachings of the great seers and prophets. Do not despise anyone. Everyone is entitled to accept what is good from any source. Differences of creed and caste are irrelevant. There is only one caste, the caste of humanity. There is only one religion, the religion of love. There is one language, the language of the heart. There is only one God; He is omnipresent" Sai Baba, SS, 1/86, p. 4

"You have to get rid of the ideas of 'mine' and 'thine'. Regard yourselves as the children of one God, who is the universal protector. Bear in mind three things: love of God, fear of sin, observance of social morality." Sai Baba. SS. 1/88, p. 5

How To Celebrate Christmas?

"Carols and candles, readings from the Bible and acting out the incidents that surrounded his birth, are not enough to celebrate the birth of Jesus." Sai Baba. SSS. X, discourse on 25-12-78, 232

"Jesus sacrificed His life and poured out his blood to instill love and compassion in the heart of man, so that he (man) may be happy when others are happy and sad when others are sad. It is not by festivity and fun that you should celebrate Christmas. Celebrate it, rather, by resolving and putting into practice at least one of the ideas He (Christ) enunciated, or endeavour to reach at least one of the goals that He placed before man".-Sai Baba, Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-76, pp. 86 & 87.

Sai Baba's Christmas Message

"You work as a messenger or servant. Later, you worship, as a son does his father. Finally you achieve the wisdom that 'You' and 'He' are 'One'. That is the spiritual journey that Jesus has shown the way in clear terms. He announced very early in life that He had come to illumine the spiritual path. Even as a bud. He emitted fragrance. He had the light in Him, or else how can the tiny glow-worm light a lamp. To elevate, to raise the level of his consciousness. He (God) has to incarnate as man. He has to speak to them in their own style and language. He has to teach them the methods that they can adopt and practise. Birds and beasts need no Divine Incarnation to guide them, for they have no inclination to stray away from their Dharma (right conduct). Man alone forgets or ignores the goal of life." Sai Baba, SSS, Vol. X, discourse on 25-12-78. p. 233

"Jesus was the embodiment of compassion and love. His heart melted in sympathy when He saw anyone suffering. His entire life was dedicated to service. In the interest of truth. He laid down His own life. Such persons are revered in this world, however times may change. Jesus was engaged in Sathya Narayana worship throughout His life; that is to say. He was adhering to truth." Sai Baba, SSS, Vol. X, p. 141

Sathya Sai Baba & Jesus Christ

''There is one point that I cannot but bring to your special notice today. At the moment, when Jesus was emerging in the Supreme Principle of Divinity, He communicated some news to his followers, which has been interpreted in a variety of ways by commentators and those who relish the piling of writings on writings, and meanings upon meanings, until it all swells up into a huge mess. The statement itself has been manipulated and tangled into a conundrum. The statement of Christ is simple. He who has sent me among you will come again.', and he pointed to a lamb. The lamb is merely a symbol, a sign. It stands for the voice - Ba-Ba. The announcement was of the advent of Baba. 'His' Name will be 'Truth', Christ declared. 'Sathya' means 'truth'. 'He' will wear a robe of red, a blood-red robe. (Here Sri Sathya Sai Baba pointed to the robe He was wearing!). He will be short, with a crown (of hair). The lamb is the sign and symbol of love. Christ did not declare that He would come again. He said: 'He who made me will come again.' That Ba-Ba is this Baba, and Sai, the short, curly hair-crowned red-robed Baba, has come. He is in everyone of you, as dweller in. the heart. He is there.. short, with a robe. of the colour of the blood that fills it." Sai Baba. SSS, Vol. VIII. discourse on 25-12-72. p. 134

"Jesus was love. Sathya Sai too is love. That explains the gathering of Christians of all sects, which we see here (at Prasanthi Nilayam). In Rome today, Catholics gather to celebrate the Advent of Jesus. The Protestants celebrate it by themselves in their churches. The Jews are not welcome anywhere. But in the presence of Sathya Sai, all are equally welcome." Sai Baba, SSS, Vol. XI, discourse on 25-12-81. p. 225

Sathya Sai Baba Disclosed His Nature On Christmas Day

"Twenty years ago when Christmas was celebrated for the first time in Prasanthi Nilayam, I sang a song (as follows):

"Love in my form,

Truth is my breath,

Peace is my food

My life is my message

Expansion is my life.

No reason for Love, no season for Love

No birth, no death"

Sai Baba, SS. 1/99. p. 8

"Sai Baba sang the same above famous Bhajan on 25 December 1989, a Christmas day, at Poomachandra Auditorium, Prasanthi Nilayam, announcing His divine nature." SS, 1/90. p. 4

Christmas Celebration At Prasanthi Nilayam

"We have been celebrating Christmas every year here. True Christmas is celebrated only in Prasanthi Nilayam, where people of all religions join together to celebrate it. Generally, the Hindus celebrate Hindu festivals, the Muslims celebrate their festivals, and the Christians celebrate their festivals, so on and so forth. It is only in Prasanthi that people of all religions - Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Parsis, etc. come together to celebrate Christmas. Prasanthi Nilayam symbolizes the unity of all religions. Elsewhere, people drink, eat non-vegetarian food and make merry in the name of Christmas. But Christmas in Prasanthi Nilayam is celebrated in a holy atmosphere, not a 'holiday'. Sai Baba. SS, 1/99, p. 8

"The Christmas festival is celebrated in many countries with a lot of fanfare, merriment and riotous festivities. You should note one thing. No where in the world is Christmas celebrated in the same manner as it is done in Prasanthi Nilayam. People belonging to different countries, different faiths and different cultures, coming together to adore God and celebrate this festival in such a holy atmosphere, which cannot be found anywhere else. Christmas is celebrated in America, Germany, Italy and other countries. But in what manner? By sumptuous eating, drinking and dancing and wasting time. Here also you indulge in drink. But what is it you drinking? You are drinking Pure Divine Love. It is this love that you must offer to the world." 'SaiBaba, SS. l/91~7p. 22

Unity Of All Religions On Christmas At Prasanthi Nilayam

"Complete unity of all religions can be seen only in Prasanthi Nilayam (on Christmas. 25 December 1999). Imagine what a phenomenon it is that the Christians from 64 countries of the world have assembled here to celebrate Christmas. This principle of unity is the sign of true devotion." Sai Baba. SS. 1/2000. p. 1

Christmas Message

"Great teachers belong to the entire mankind. It is wrong to believe that Jesus belongs only to the Christians and that Christmas is a holy festival for the West only. Christ, Rama and Krishna - they are for all men everywhere. Various limbs and organs together form the body; various states and communities form the World. The sustenance of love, endowed by the Divine Grace, has to circulate in every state and community to make the world live in peace and happiness. If this truth is realised, there will never arise any idea of difference." Sai Baba, SS. 1/2000, last back cover page; SSS, Vol. VIII, Discourse on 25.12.1972

Sathya Sai's Benediction On Christmas

The following benediction was sung in English by Sai Baba on Christmas, 25 December 1989, at Prasanthi Nilayam, Pooma Chandra Auditorium:

You all are in the Kingdom of Sai!

You all are in Sai's Home!

You all are in Sai's Light!

You all are in Sai's Heart

I will bless you, I will bless you in this Holy Night.

This is your right.

Sai Baba, SS. 1/90. p. 3

Glimpses Of Christmas Celebrations At Prasanthi Nilayam (1999)

Christmas Carols By Overseas Devotees

"Christmas celebrations in Prasanthi Nilayam started in the afternoon of 24th December (1999) in Sai Kulwant Hall. For this purpose, the Hall was magnificently decorated in the traditional Christmas manner with golden, red and green colour velvet decorations. Appropriately enough, the entrance gate to Sai Kulwant Hall had a large velvet cloth hanging with the writing, 'Sarva Dharma Priya Sai Deva ' meaning the Lord Sai who loves all religions. The twelve pillars of the Hall, where Beloved Swami walks across the Darshan lines had red velvet hangings with a Cross and angel in gold, representing the 12 apostles. Pine, shining gold and red fabric decorated the entire  Hall—-with cherubs. A statue of Joseph, Marry and the Baby Jesus, in His crib, was placed close to the chair of Swami. The Christmas programme started at 3.45 p.m. on 24 December 1999 when Bhagavan ceremoniously lighted the sacred lamps. After chanting Omkar and welcome song in praise of Ganesha, the overseas devotees sang Christmas carols. The main choir of 400 members sang with their hearts to the merriment of huge gathering of devotees, which filled the entire Sai Kulwant Hall. To name a few carols, they sang 'Dona Nobis Pacem,' Glory to God in the Highest,' and ended with joyful clapping to "The Saints Come Marching in.' The programme came to a close with Arati to Bhagavan and distribution of Prasadam.

Jesus And The Wizard Of Love

This excellent drama adapted from the book 'The Wizard of OZ' was presented by Bal Vikas children on the evening of 24 December 1999, in the Poomachandra Auditorium in the Divine Presence of Bhagavan Baba.

The opening scene begins on a Hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is speaking about His message of love and compassion to a congregation of people, including five children - a Western, a Mexican, an Indian, a Chinese and an African. Jesus then exhorts the children to undertake the journey to the Emerald city, the home of His Father, the Wizard of Love.

As the children come to the home of the Wizard of Love, they are introduced to the Father of Jesus, who is none else but Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Father tells the children that the qualities they are seeking - courage, compassion and discrimination -already exist deep within them. The children then ask Jesus to tell them the story of His mother, Maria. The play ends with the Nativity story unfolding. At the end, Bhagavan goes up the stage and blesses the children.

Divine Darshan On Christmas Morning

Early Christmas morning, the carolers in procession with lighted candles, walked through the Ashram, singing praise to Jesus. The small children led the-choir into the Hall carrying lanterns, followed by more children in beautiful angel costumes with golden wings.

The energy builds, the lights are twinkling, and then He appears in His White Robe, sweet smiles, and eyes of radiant light. He gives us all His Darshan from the Mandir balcony, ever so slowly, so all can see.

Later in the morning, Swami went round the Hall and blessed the devotees with His Darshan at 7.30 a.m. Thereafter, the Brass Band of the Institute enthralled the audience with some soul-stirring music. After this performance, at 8.10 a.m., the Institute and School students presented an excellent programme of carol singing. The glorious Christmas morning programme came to a close with the distribution of Prasadam and Arati to Bhagavan.

Annual Meet Of Messangers Of Sathya Sai

The Annual Meeting of the Messengers of Sathya Sai was held on 25 December 1999, on the holy day of Christmas in Sai Kulwant Hall. Bhagavan Baba inaugurated the programme by lighting the sacred lamps at 3.00 p.m.

The President of the Association, Miss K.P. Sai Leela, welcomed all to the meeting and briefly mentioned about the service activities of the members of the Association from India and abroad.

The Secretary of the Messengers of Sathya Sai. Miss Rajeshwari Patel, extended Christmas greetings to all the devotees on behalf of her Association and said that this Christmas was very special as it was the last of the millennium. Presenting the Annual Report of the Messengers of Sathya Sai for year 1999, Miss Patel informed devotees about service activities and future programmes of the Association.

A student of the Anantapur Campus also narrated her experiences and told how her life had been transformed during her stay in the college hostel.

The last speaker of the afternoon, Mr. Arthur Hillcoat, emphasized the need to put Bhagavan Baba's teachings into practice. He reminded the devotees that we could make Swami happy only by living His teachings in our day-to-day life.

After this, Bhagavan Baba gave His Christmas Discourse, exhorting the devotees to follow Christ's teachings of love and service to mankind.

Drama By Messengers of Sathya Sai

"An excellent drama entitled "There is only One Religion - the Religion of Love,' was enacted by the Messengers of Sathya Sai in the Poomachandra Auditorium on the evening of 25th December 1999.

The play presented stories from different parts of the world including the famous story Abou Ben Adem and Swami Vivekananda's epoch-making Address in the world Parliament of Religions to bring home the teachings of Bhagavan Baba that different religions are the paths that lead to the same God and that service to man is service to God.

Superb acting of the cast and appropriate video support left a lasting effect on the audience about Bhagavan's Baba's message of love to mankind.

Cultural Programmes By Overseas Bal Vikas Children

A drama entitled ' Solon and Croesus' was presented by the children of Sai Spiritual Education of Greece in Poomachandra Auditorium on the evening of 28th December 1999. The drama was based on the life of one of the outstanding sages of Greece, viz, Solon.

Solon's encounter with the fabulously rich King of Lydia was highlighted in this play to show that it was the practice of virtues that brought happiness to man and not wealth, which changed masters quickly.

At the end of the play, Bhagavan went up the stage and blessed the children. He also materialized a gold chain for the child who played the role of Solon. Arati was offered to Bhagavan at 8.00 p.m.

Earlier another drama by overseas Bal Vikas children depicted the hazards of modern civilization and underlined the need for judicious management of natural resources by man.

With these two dramas, the Christmas celebrations in Prasanthi Nilayam came to a happy conclusion." Editor, SS. 1/2000. pp. 28-30

Christmas Celebrations At Prasanthi Nilayam - 1995

"Given the auspiciousness of Christmas in the Christian calendar, it is befitting that celebrations take place in Prasanthi Nilayam. And every year Bhagavan Baba energizes and illumines this programme.

First decorations began to take shape in quiet places, ready to emerge and delight the eyes of Christmas Day (25 December 1995). Thus, angels knelt in adoration on either side of Swami's chair, placed centrally under the glittering crystal chandeliers on the Mandir porch and they flew joyfully around the recessed walls and on the marble columns. Huge green advent wreaths hung on either side of silver doors, garnished with candles, multi-coloured orbs and golden stars, which danced in the breeze, tinsels, hearts, Christmas tree motifs and stars highlighted the multi-coloured buntings and beautiful rose-bedecked wreaths adorned the gates. The stage was set for Christmas.

Meanwhile, international choirs were formed. A large one, with 410 members, created a programme of both traditional carols and songs of adoration of Swami. They practised all day to reach excellence associated with this event. A smaller choir wove itself into the Christmas play rehearsals.

One hundred and twenty Bal Vikas children from sixty-three countries came together under loving hands, to leam their lines, dances and their positions on the stage.

In the distant shed, costumes grew from the pieces of clothes as ladies from far-flung countries enjoyed their busy Satsang while making the costumes. Scenic arrangements went on. Innovative concepts such as ceiling drops were added and brilliant visual effects were practised.

One hundred-twenty foreign Seva Dal members took over Darshan duties, and excitement and anticipation grew daily as rehearsals were given the Divine Grace of Swami's unannounced Darshan.

Christmas Eve arrived. At 4 p.m. Bhagavan came to Sai Kulwant Mandap and sitting in His swivel chair listened with evident pleasure to the choir as they poured their love in song. Every face gazing at Swami glowed with His reflected light, as hearts swelled with peace and goodwill- a precious moment in time.

Bhajans, Aarati and Prasadam concluded the performance. The gathering reassembled in the Poomachandra Auditorium to witness the children's play.

The Childrens' Play

Telling of a family's sojourn in Prasanthi Nilayam at Christmas and the transformation in a boy's awareness, the play was also memorable as a spectacular show. Children danced and sang, a demon dropped from above (mortally wounded by Rama's arrow), firework stars cascaded and the Avatar gave a compelling message. The final scene was a grand finale. Huge bunches of helium balloons, trailing silver red streamers, were released on the stage, smoke billowed and multi-coloured glitter fell from above as children and choir and their love to Swami. He then came on the stage and gave Prasadam to every child, smiling amidst the colour and laughter and love.

Christmas Darshan

Next morning (25 December 1995), the festival continued. Carol-Nagar-sankirtan (a river of candle-light) flowed into the Mandap to await Bhagavan's silver door Darshan and the soft carol singing expressed the heart yearnings from every soul. All the devotees felt doubly blessed as Swami, wearing a white robe, gave His Double Hand blessings, pouring love on one and all.

A gentle gesture, indicating Aarati, announced His leave taking and then all sat in bliss reluctant to extinguish candles. At that moment of offering, all were indeed one, hearts united by love for Bhagavan Baba.

Bhagavan returned in vibrant orange robe to sit on the porch for student's concert. This year there was an indeed an added ingredient. Maynard Fergusen, world famous jazz trumpeter, led the student brass band in an up-tempo caroling, which brought hand-clapping involvement from the crowded Mandap. As Swami sat, the trumpeters stood with Santa hats on, and His evident enjoyment of this added to everyone else's. The jolly U.K. pianist, David Bailey, dressed in black tails, added a salubrious touch as his fingers danced joyfully over the keyboard and the energy field of love and happiness was reflected in every face. Prasadam blessed by Bhagavan was distributed to the entire gathering.

The afternoon programme was in the Poomachandra Hall. First, their Annual Report was presented by the 'Messengers of Sathya Sai'. These exemplary young women spoke with humility of the Seva they selflessly perform. Then Arthur Hillcoat gave an address  before 'Bhagavan Baba rose t give His Christmas-Discourse:

Swami's message of love gently reminded all to practise Divine love, not worldly love, and He spoke of Jesus who was God's messenger and son, just as all are.

He enjoined on each devotee to search for his/her own faults and to resist criticizing others and ended by saying: 'The more you love and the more happy you will be. Live a life of love.'

Then the 'Messengers of Sathya Sai' presented a dance drama of Ganga's descent to the earth through Shiva's matted locks and Swami's drawing it out of the netherworld to benefit the mankind via the Water Project. It was a beautiful display of classical Indian dance by 7-12 years olds (who had never seen Swami before) - a fitting finale to the Christmas Festival.

"Swami's Christmas Gift"

Describing the children's drama staged in the Poomachandra Auditorium on December 24 (1995), Mrs. Rita Bruce writes:

The Children's Christmas Drama began at 6:30 p.m. The name of the drama was 'Swami's Christmas Gift'. Each day of rehearsal was for the children a Christmas gift from Swami. His love and grace flowed like the holy river, Ganga, falling from Shiva's head. Never before had Swami given before the children so much Darshan.

There were 120 children from 63 countries whose ages fell between 2 and 14 years. Everyone who wanted to be in this drama was accepted, even those who came two days before the performance. This was a profound learning experience for all who attended.

Sweets For The Children

Swami gave the children many Darshans every day. He brought them apples one day and played the game of 'Catch if catch can'. Another day Swami gave them big chocolate biscuits as Prasad. He coached their performance, reviewed their costumes, looked after the props, and even fixed an angel's wing.

One day He asked, 'How many drama choir women and workers?' They told Him a number and soon after Swami returned with students carrying saris for all. The number they gave was incorrect, but Swami had the correct number with Him, 119, 'Joy to the World, The Lord has come' was reflected in the eyes and smiles of each lady. Bhagavan didn't stop giving. He gave the men white material for stitching suits.

One day there was a beautiful Christmas table with decorated cake in white, red and green frosting next to Swami's chair, a box of Prasad, and a Christmas tree.

Swami picked up a matchbox, lit the candle and while He cut the cake. He read out the writing on the frosting, 'Holy Christmas,' and blessed the Prasad for the children.

A few children did not need costumes because they wore white, but there were 100 costumes to be sewn. I asked the costume coordinator, 'how is this possible in such a short time?' She told me, 'Baba's Divine helping hands reached out to the ladies who worked on costumes for the children. He supplied five sewing machines, and a hall to work in. The one hundred children were chosen by the 20th of December. They were measured, material was brought from Bangalore, and the making of the costumes began in earnest on the 21a of December.

A huge amount of work had to be done by the morning of the 24* (of December 1995) when Bhagavan would inspect the dress rehearsal. The ladies worked from dawn to late in the night to get costumes ready. When there was still much work to be done, on the night of December 23, a blackout occurred, making sewing impossible. Baba must have known that all the ladies needed a rest. It was only through Baba's Divine help that the costumes were completed in three days and ready for the Lord to see on the morning of Christmas Eve.

The first thing He asked, 'Where is Mary?' She was brought before Baba. Baba then wanted to see Jesus and the boy playing the role of Sai Baba. When He saw the three of them together. He said, 'Very nice costumes, very happy. You have got Jesus' mother, Jesus and Sai Baba here now.'

The drama director was a Hollywood film director. Under his direction, the children had to stretch their ability a little beyond what they thought was possible. They practised

for about eight hours a day. The result of their efforts was acknowledged on the night of the performance.

The drama was about a western family planning to spend Christmas with Sai Baba. The young teen-age boy, Mathew, was confused about who Baba was and hoped that he could find the answer on his trip to Prasanthi Nilayam. He had some dreams in which Sai Baba showed him scenes from Jesus' life and taught him who he really was. Swami said to him, 'You are God, I am God, We are God.' In the finale, Swami's Christmas gift to Mathew was the answer to the proverbial question. 'Who am I?' 'I am I.'

Swami's gift to the children who were lined up according to their height, all 120, some holding coloured balloons with shiny long streamers and sparkling confetti showered down on them, was His unprecended long stage Darshan. Swami gave all the children Pada-Namaskar and handed each of them a beautiful packaged gift of a Christmas cake. Swami's hair had the sparkling confetti shining on it. Balloons with helium were floating in the air with the long tail shiny streamers dancing in the light,, while the children were at His Feet.' Swami even held a balloon. It was verily a Holy Christmas Festival and Swami's Christmas Gift to us all." Editor. SS. 1/96. pp. 6-9

The story behind the photograph of the Risen Christ

"This story describes how a very special photograph of the Risen Christ was manifested by Sri Sathya Sai Baba for a visitor to one of his ashrams known as Prasanthi Nilayam - which means the Abode of Peace - in Puttaparti, India, in 1985. I relay the details to you as they were conveyed to me by Barbara McAlley, a friend who I met 'quite by chance' amongst a throng of people at Bombay airport in July 1987..."

Steps to Make Our Life a Wonderful Journey

There are two things essential for a happy life:
Dhanya - grains for the sustenance of the body;
Dhyana - contemplation for entering the temple of the Lord and merging in His glory.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part I, page 145]

Two ideas that should be cherished in our hearts:
Forget the harm that anyone has done to you;
Forget the good that you have done to others.

[Ref:A Recaptiulation of Baba's Divine Teachings - page 270]

Man has to pay attention to three basic duties in his quest for happiness:
He should forget what he has to forget, namely the world around him and its tantalising pleasures;
He has to reach where he has to reach, namley the goal of the Divine, the Presence of the Almighty and,
He has to give up what he has to give up, namely material desires and pursuits.
The Vedic prayer Asatho maa sadgamaya, Thamaso maa jyorthi gamaya, Mrthyor maa amrtham gamaya summarises these aspirations very nicely.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part I, page 159]

There are three things which are immensely pleasing to to the Lord:
A tongue that never indulges in falsehood.
A body that is not tainted by causing harm to others.
A mind that is free from attachment and hatred.
These three constitute the Triple Purity(Thrikarna Suddhi). Refrain fron uttering falsehood, inflicting pain on others and entertaining ill will towards others. Practice silence as a means of preventing the tongue from straying away from truth.

[Ref:Sanathana Sarathi - April 1988]

There are only three ways of saving oneself:
Pravritti (action) - external activity is a method of sublimating the instincts and impulses;
Nivritti (detachment, internal quiet) is a method of subduing the thirst of the senses and of the ego;
Prapatti (surrender) is a method of utilising the senses, the instincts and impulses, the intelligence, the emotions, for the glorification of the all-knowing, all-directing Divine.
Do and dedicate; work and worship; plan and protect; but do not worry about the fruit. That is the secret of spiritual success.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part II, page 32]

There are three kinds of sadhanas(spiritual discipline) in order to develop an unwavering mind:
Meena sadhana(like the fish) - Meena sadhana can be explained by remembering that fish can survive only in water. The moment it is taken out of water, it perishes. Similarly meena sadhana is one which can be only in solitude. If you sit in public, the sadhana will not be successful. Being unable to concentrate when he is mixed up with other people, to be able to get concentration in solitude is called meena sadhana.
Mriga sadhana(like the animal) - Mriga sadhana is that in which one can get concentration on the earth only. You cannot go elsewhere, say into water, and do it. As in this case, there are some people who can get concentration only when they are sitting in company with others. They cannot get concentration in solitude. If they are alone they begin to think of their family problems.
Kurma sadhana( like the tortoise) - On the other hand, the tortoise can live equally well either in water or on earth. So, if we say that one's sadhana is like kurma sadhana or one is able to concentrate like a tortoise, we mean that the person is able to concentrate irrespective of whether he is alone or sitting in company with others. This is called kurma sadhana.

[Ref:Sadhana - The Inward Path - page 50]

Four directives for sanctifying our lives and purifying our minds, so that we can contact the God within us:
Give up the company of the wicked;
Welcome the chance to be among the Good;
Do good deeds both day and night;
Remember which is lasting and which is not.

[Ref:Sanathana Sarathi - July 1985, page 175]

There are four things in which every man must interest himself:
Who am I?
Where from I have come?
Where am I going?
How long shall I be here?
The four Vedas give answers to these four questions. All spiritual inquiry begins with these questions and attempts to find out the answers. Suppose there is a letter put into the post box without the address to which it should go or the address from which it has come. It will not reach anywhere. It is a waste to have written it. So too, it is waste to have come into this world, if it is not known where from you came and where to you go. The letter will go to the dead letter office! The jivi will be caught in the cycle of birth and death and can never find itself. For this, atmavichara and for the successful arrival at the correct anaswers, sadhana is essential. The answers must become part of you experience.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part II, page7- 8]

Four resolutions to make about your life hereafter:
Purity - Desist from wicked thoughts, bad habits, low activities, that weaken your self-respect.
Service - Serve others, for they are the reflections of the same Entitiy of which you are yourself another reflection. No one of you has any authenticity, except with reference to the One Original.
Mutuality - Feel always kinship with all the objects in the Universe.
Truth - Do not deceive yourself or others, by distoting your experience.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part II, pages 222, 223]

I am insisting on five points of discipline for the permanent residents of Prashanthi Nilayam. I shall tell you about them, for, your homes and your villages have to be transformed into Prashanthi Nilayams. They are :
Silence : This is the first step in sadhana; it makes the other steps easy. It promotes self-control; it lessens chances of anger, hate, malice, greed and pride. Besides, you can hear His Footsteps, only when Silence reigns in the mind.
Cleanliness : It is the doorway to Godliness. Inner and outer cleanliness are essential, if you desire to install God in your heart.
Service : Service saves you from the agony you get when another suffers; it broadens your vision, widens your awareness, deepens your compassion. All waves are on the same sea from the same sea. Seva teaches you to be firm in this knowledege.
Love : Do not calculate or weigh the reaction, result or reward. Love calls; love responds. Love is God, Live in Love.
Hate-less-ness : Adweshtaa sarva bhoothaanaam(without hatred to any being). Nothing is to be looked down upon. as secondary, inferior, unimportant, or expendable. Each has its allotted role in the drama, designed by the Almighty. Do not slight, insult or injure any being, for He is in every being and your slight becomes a sacrilege.

[Ref:The Voice of the Avatar - Part II, pages 175,176]

Five types of Dharma (duties) have been laid down for man.
Kula Dharma - duties relating to to his occupational group.
Desa Dharma - duties to the nation.
Matha Dharma - duties pertaining to his religion.
Gana Dharma - duties relating to society.
Aapad Dharma - duty when he faces danger.
All these five types of duties are related to one's life in the phenomenal world and are not concerned with the Supreme Reality.

[Ref:Sanathana Sarathi - March 1984, page 67]

Man has to contend with afflictions from five causes. These five causes are :
Avidya - lack of true knowledge renders a man feel weak and imbecile, incapable of recognising his inherent divine nature.
Abhinava - makes a man attached to samsara (worldly concerns) and to forget his real destiny. He allows his mind to dominate him. As a result he is subject to sorrow and depression.
Asthitha - is the trouble that arises out of excessive greed. When the desires are not fulfilled, there is distress. When they are fulfilled self-conceit(ahamkara) grows. In this process, genuine human qualities wither away.
Raga Klesa - is the distress caused by insatiable desire for houses, vehicles, wealth, etc.
Dwesha Klesa- is the feeling of bitterness that arises when one does not get what he seeks from others. In due course he becomes a low and pitiable creature.

[Ref:Sanathana Sarathi - July 1987, pages 179, 180]

Five prayers to endow us with the "awareness of Brahman".
If you are yearning to experience Brahmananda, the Sath-Chitah Ananda is pure, from this day, keep ever in your memory what I am about to tell you:

"I am God; I am not different from God". Be conscious of this always. Keep it ever in mind. "I am God. I am God. I am not different from God". Be reminding yourself of this. Pray that you may not fall in this spiritual excercise(sadhana).
"I am the Indivisible Supreme Absolute(Akandha Para Brahman)". This is the second Truth to be established in the consciousness by unremitting repetition and prayer.
"I am Sath-Chith-Ananda(Being Awareness, Bliss)".
"Grief and anxiety can never affect me". Develop this faith and convince yourself of this Truth by repeated assurance and prayer.
"I am ever content; fear can never enter me". Feel thus for ever. Pray that this convinction grows stronger and stronger.
Exhort yourself. "O self! Utter 'Om Thath Sath', 'Om Thath Sath', the threefold symbol of Brahman. As the physical body is maintained healthy and strong by the five vital airs(prana), these five prayers will endow you with the "awareness of Brahman", which is the same as "the status of Brahman itself".

[Ref:Sanathana Sarathi - January 1984, pages 7,8]

Five D's: The group of five subjects to master to obtain the degree of Divine love:
Dedication - It means offering. When you offer the flower of your heart to the Lord, it should be free from the pests of desire, hatred, envy, greed and the like.
Devotion - This is the highest form of love. It means the constant loving contemplation of God, repetition of His name, worshipping Him, and doing penance foe Him. Service to the Lord is the highest expression of devotion.
Discipline - This is most essential for students. The human estate is based upon regulations and self-control. These have to be strictly adhered to in the daily life.
Discrimination - Man should not let himself be guided by the mind. He should follow the dirrections of his intelligence(buddhi). As long as you follow the mind, you cannot obtain Madhava(Divinity). Discrimination is essential for every student and educated man.
Determination - It is like the reins for a horse. When you want to achieve something, you must have the determination and persistence to secure it by all of your efforts. No room should be given for doubts and hesitations. There is nothing on earth which cannot be achieved by firm determination.

[Ref:Sanathan Sarathi - March 1988, pages 68,69,70]

Six qualities necessary for a devotee to be dear to the Lord:
Be free from any kind of desire or expectation
Have internal purity(the purity of the speech, mind and the body) as well as external cleanliness.
Have determination in performing actions which are pure, helpful to others, and sublimate man.
Have freedom from attachement to anything
Have freedom form worry. Concern yourself with the present, which is the child of the past and parent of the future.
Renounce egoism in any form.

[Ref:Sanathana Sarathi, October 93, pages 253-255]

Time is invaluable; do not waste even half a minute. The hours that have passed cannot return. The wheel of time will not halt for any person. So, examine your thoughts, words and deeds and find out whether spending precious time on them is worthwhile or not. Death is always waving its sharp sword over the head, but mindful of this imminent and inescapable fate, many are lost in plans to build rich, prosperous and luxurious lives for themselevs. They live in hope and dreams of better days. The fire of wisdom alone is capable of reducing these plans and hopes into ash.

[Ref:Sathya Sai Baba]

The first thing we should do in this context is to promote and strengthen the aspect of self-confidence. This confidence is one's own self is like the foundation at the bottom. On the foundation of that confidence, we should build the wall of self-satisfaction, we should put the roof of self-sacrifice. In that mansion, we should attain self-realisation. Today, in the context of human nature, men are conducting themselves in a manner by which we think that they have no understanding at all of the need for self-confidence. The individual human beings have become so weak that they are not able to understand their own nature, their own self and, therefore, they try to find the nature of others and find fault in others. Because such unsacred qualities have become many in number, man is suffering and he does not understand his own human nature and the quality of human life is degrading.
[Ref:Sathya Sai Baba]

Purify the heart by being good and kind to all. Do not attempt to find fault with others. Look upon all with love, with respect, with faith in their sincerity. I would ask you to treat your servants kindly. Do not entertain hatred or contempt in your heart; Show your resentment if you must, through words, not action. Repent for the errors that you commit and decide never to repeat them. Pray for the strength to carry out your resolutions.

Do not unto another what you do not like to be done to yourself. For another is really "you". Even if another uses foul language against you be calm and sweet; say, "Oh, I am so surprised that my behaviour has given you that impression." Smile in return, do not take it heart; remind yourself that even Swami is not free from these peculiar beings who revel in falsehoods. Smile when you hear these revilings and be calm. That is a sign of your meditation is progressing fast.

[Ref:Sathya Sai Baba]

Life is a pilgrimage to God; the holy spot is there afar! The road lies before you; but unless you take the first step forward and follow that step with others, how can you reach it? Start with courage, faith, joy and steadiness. You are bound to succeed. The mind and the intellect are two bullocks ties to a cart, the "inner man". The bullocks are not used to the road of truth, righteouness, peace and love, so they drag the cart along the road familar to them, namely falsehood, injustice, worry and hatred. You have to train them to take the better road so that they may not bring disaster to themselves, the cart they are yoked to and the men inside it.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part I, page 14]

Life is a march from "I" to "We". But, it usually strays from "I" to "They" and does not reach the God, 'We". Life is journey from the position "I" to the position "We", from the singular to the plural, from the imprisoned one to the liberated One, who is seen in the many. The vision of the One, immanent in the obvious many is the fulfillment of all the years of one's life. This is the teaching contained in the ancient texts and Scriptures.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part II, page 24]

The wise man is he who keeps his reason sharp and clear, and sees things as they really are. He listens to the advice;
Life is a Challenge; Meet it;
Life is Love; Share it;
Life is a Dream; Realise it;
Life is a Game; Play it.

This is the real Pilgrim's Progress. This is the lion's march across the forest, fearless, masterful and victorious. The roar of the lion makes all the denizens scamper in panic; so too the Halo of Wisdom scatters the dark brood of fear and doubt.

[Ref:Voice of the Avatar - Part I, pages 30, 31]

The game of life is worth playing and becomes interesting only when there are bounds and rules which limit and control. Imagine a game of football without any rules or bounds for the field. It will be chaos; it will be free fight; it will be a riot. No one can say who wins and how. The Dharmamarga and Brahmamarga are the boundaries of the field. The virtues fight against the vicious tendencies. Play the game, paying heed to the warning of "Foul" and "Out".

[Ref:Sadhana - The Inward Path, page 167]

Just as every day you engage in exercises, and consume tonics, calculating the intake of calories and vitamins, paying meticulous attention to the nutritional value of the food, pay attention also to the intake of impressions into the mind - whether they debilitate or strengthen, whether they add to the power of resistance of the mind against the viruses - greed, envy, hatred, pride, malice, etc. Have a meal of good acts of service, Divine thoughts, and drink the Premarasa, so that they may be washed down, and digested well. Then, you can be shining in mental health, happiness and wholesomeness.

[Ref:Sathya Sai Speaks - Vol VII - B, page 42]

Slow and steady - let that be your maxim! Adhere to a regular routine, a timetable. Jast as the doctor prescribes a certain fixed meaure or weight of the drug and warns you that anything less is ineffective and anything more is harmful, so too have some limit for your spiritual excercises. Do not overdo them or do them casually and without care. The doctors tell you about the hour of the day and the number of times the drug has to be repeated, for the action of the quantity taken must be reinforced ere it becomes weak. So also, you have to repeat the name of the Lord(japam) and do meditation(dhyanam) at regular intervals.

[Ref:Sathya Sai Speaks Vol II , page 33]

If you talk of anything you do not know, it is a matter of ridicule. If you talk about anything you have not experienced, it is reprehensible, for you are cheating your listeners. If you learn the art of public speaking and talk enchantingly using all the skills and frills recommended in the textbooks or borrowed from others, it is cheating, nevertheless. Be sincere, be simple, be honest. That is the best recipe for successful speaking.

[Ref:Sri Sathya Sai Baba]

The Lord will manifest where and when you yearn for Him; if you yearn that He should come before you in flesh and blood, He will respond. He is ever ready to respond; only, you are not ready to invite or welcome or receive Him into your heart. You have not purified the heart and removed there from the thorns of lust and greed, of envy and hatred. The baby that has been fed on milk may start crying, do not be worried. It is very helpful for digestion. Cry, so that you can digest the joy of knowing God; cry and shed tears of joy. The tear glands have been allotted to you not for weeping helplessly before others with hands extended for alms, but to shed tears of joy of thankfulness, at the Feet of the Lord.

[Ref:Sri Sathya Sai Baba]

This conquest of the ego is a very hard task; years of persistent effort are needed to get success in this endeavour.
For getting a degree you struggle in the University for a number of years poring over books night and day; how much more difficult is this examination, success in which guarantees lasting happiness, and escape from the weary round of birth and death?

[Ref:Sri Sathya Sai Baba]

Learn to speak little and to speak soft. That will reduce the chances of getting angry. Seek the good in others and evil in yourself.

[Ref:Sri Sathya Sai Baba]

Believe firmly that the body is the residence of God, that the food you eat is the offering you make to your Deity; that bathing is the ceremonial bathing of the divine spirit in you; the ground you walk upon is His domain; the joy you derive is His gift; the grief you experience is His lesson that you tread the path more carefully. Remember Him even in sun and shade, day and night, awake or sleep.

The Ten Guiding Principles - the Pathway to Divinity

Sai Baba's teachings on serving society are summarised in this, "the
ten guiding principles":

1. Love and Serve your country. Do not be critical of others'
countries.

"Have a sense of pride in your motherland. Just as your mother has
given birth to you, so too the land has given birth to you. Whatever
country you belong to, you should have a sense of patriotism. You
should not indulge in criticising other countries or people
belonging to other nations. Having trust and faith in your own
country, you won't try to put down any other country. Never bring
grief or sorrow to your country. To have pride in one's own
motherland is important."

2. Honour and respect all religions as pathways to God.

"Never have hatred toward any religion. Honour and respect all
religions equally. Even as you are a citizen of your motherland but
respect all countries, also respect all religions equally."

3. Love all humanity as part of your family.

"Develop a sense of the brotherhood of man. Look upon each person as
your own brother. There is only one caste, the caste of humanity.
All of us belong to the human race, so everyone is equal. Therefore,
love each one equally."

4. Keep home and surroundings clean.

"Keep your own house and its surroundings pure and clean. This
hygiene will keep you healthy and benefit your worldly life."

5. Help the needy with food, clothing, and shelter. Help them
become self-reliant when possible.

"Be discriminating when dispensing charity. In the name of charity
or philanthropy, we tend to do injustice to this country. Charity
does not mean that the land should be full of beggars. We can
provide some support and means for the beggars, but provide food,
clothing, and other conveniences in such a way that you are not
encouraging laziness and begging."

6. Be examples of honesty. Do not participate in any corruption
such as bribery.

"Never give or take a bribe. Giving bribes, or accepting bribes, is
contrary to the very name of the Sri Sathya Sai organisations. Bear
this in mind continuously."

7. Curb jealousy, hatred and envy.

"We must seek ways to solve difficulties such as hatred, envy, and
jealousy. To curb this sense of envy and jealousy, we must develop a
broader outlook. Do not differentiate on the basis of race, caste,
creed, or country. Follow your cultural and religious customs in
your own home, but do not attempt to impose them on society. Rather
than this, love each person as your own brother, not seeing him as
belonging to another creed, religion, or country."

8. Develop self-reliance.

"Members of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisations should do things by
themselves; they should not depend on others. You may be very
wealthy and have servants and assistants to help in a few tasks, but
your own work you must do yourself. If you wish to be of service to
society, serve yourself first. One who will not serve society has no
right to belong to a Sri Sathya Sai organisation."

9. Observe your country's laws and be exemplary citizens.

"Never ever go against the law of the land. Follow the letter of the
law. The members of the Sri Sathya Sai organisations should follow
the law in spirit also, and be models for the government."

10. Adore God, abhor sin.

"You must love God and avoid sin. Love God incessantly. As long as
you keep committing sins, God will never be yours."

THE CRUCIFIX

HISLOP WITH BABADr. John S Hislop was one of those fine instruments used by Bhagavan Baba to spread His Message across the continents. Most of you might have read his wonderful books like 'My Baba and I' and 'Conversations with Sai.' Swami gave Hislop innumerable experiences so that the latter could get a feel for all aspects of Baba's Divinity. Baba also granted Hislop any number of Interviews, answered his questions in detail, came to his rescue during illness, saved him from disaster, created unusual objects for him and once even blessed him with a vision of Krishna. But relevant to this Christmas issue of Heart to Heart is the famous episode dealing with the creation by Baba of a crucifix for Hislop. Interestingly, the crucifix was created on Mahasivarathri Day in the year 1973, deep in the forest! This holy festival was celebrated by Baba in the company of a small group almost in privacy, and not before massive crowds as normally happens. Let us hear Hislop recall the event:

The crucifix was created by Baba on a most auspicious day, Mahasivarathri. ……The evening before, we were told to be ready in the early morning for a trip; and that when the cars were loaded and ready we would know the destination. Swami had decided that only a handful of people would be with Him…. THE CRUCIFIX

Our destination was the Bandipur Game Sanctuary in Bandipur Forest, several hours away from the city of Mysore. We arrived at the Forest rest house in the early afternoon. Later we took various winding roads hoping to come upon one of the Forest's wild elephant herds. ….. the elephants remained in their secret places and not even one was seen. But the drive through the hills had another and more important objective……

As we crossed a bridge above a sandy, dry riverbed, Baba indicated that this would be the place. … The cars halted at the side of the road, and we started to climb down the bank to the sandy river bottom. I was beside Baba. As we passed a bush, Swami broke off two twigs, placed them together and asked me, "What is this, Hislop?"
"Well Swami, it is a cross," I answered. Baba then closed His fingers over the twigs and directed three somewhat slow breaths into His fist, between thumb and forefinger. Then He opened His hand to reveal a Christ figure on a Cross, and He gave it to me.
He said, "This shows Christ as he really was at the time he left his body, not as artists have imagined him. His stomach is pulled in and his ribs are all showing. He had no food for eight days."
I looked at the crucifix but found no words. Baba then continued: "The wood in the cross is the same as the wood of the actual cross on which Christ was crucified. To find some of that wood after 2000 years took a little time! The image is of Christ after he died. It is a dead face."
I noticed something odd and asked, "Swami, what is that hole at the top of the cross?" Baba replied that the cross had been originally hung from a standard.

A CLOSE UPA short while after the materialisation of the cross, Sivarathri was celebrated on the sandy river bed with devotees singing Bhajans and Baba bringing out a Lingam to mark the holy day and the significance of Creation - quite a change from the normal circumstances under which Sivarathri is celebrated.

A couple of years later, some American devotees asked Swami about the cross materialised for Hislop. Baba replied:

Yes, I made it for him. When I went to look for the wood, every particle of the cross had disintegrated and returned to the elements. I reached out to the elements and reconstituted sufficient material for a small cross. Very seldom does Swami interfere with Nature, but occasionally, for a devotee, it will be done."

The story of the cross does not quite end with its physical materialisation. Hislop had a strange experience a few months later, when the cross was being shown to a few friends. This is what he says:

Within a few weeks we were back in our home in Mexico and were soon to witness an amazing series of events in relation to the crucifix. ….. [One day] the time was about 5 P.M. On this afternoon, the sky along the Mexican coast was clear and peaceful. But suddenly without warning, there was a loud crash of thunder and as our eyes turned towards the windows, lightning flashed from a dark cloud where a moment before there had been only clear sky. A violent wind rushed through the house, causing windows and doors to open and shut with such force that the glass was in danger of shattering. The curtains were flying in all directions. We were much startled by this turn of events, but my wife at once said, "It is 5 P.M., the time Christ died on the cross, and what is now happening is described in the Bible." She later brought a Bible and we looked though until we found the pertinent paragraph, which said that at the moment Christ gave up His life, a violent storm arose with lightning and thunder, and winds rent the curtains of the temple. We concluded that we had witnessed a wonder totally beyond our power of imagination. Before our eyes had occurred nothing less than a recapitulation of events related to crucifixion. The following day, newspapers in San Diego carried a brief story commenting on the sudden and mysterious storm that had arisen without warning on the Mexican coast, near Ensenada. ….A year or so later, I sent a description of the event to Dr. Eruch B. Fanibanda for his book, Vision of the Divine. He showed the memo to Baba. After reading the memo, Baba said that the event had occurred as described and that the significance attributed to it was correct.

Blessed was Hislop to have had this wonderful experience and blessed is everyone of us to have heard about it.

Hislop constantly chanted Baba's Name, right till the very end. As he gave up the mortal coil, friends at his bedside kept chanting the sacred OM, even as the soul journeyed to its eternal resting-place, the Divine Lotus Feet. Some time later, Swami asked an American devotee on the veranda, "Where is Hislop?" The devotee looked up, as if to signify that Hislop was in heaven. Baba then said, "He has come to Me. Good man; always thinking of and working for Swami." There cannot be a better eulogy.

A recollection of Swami's Divine Messages for Christmas [3]

Today you have to remind yourselves of the ideals Jesus stood for. For ages, from time to time, many noble souls, endowed with immense spiritual power, have taken birth to propagate sacred teachings to the world. They struggled hard to make the world a good place to live in. But without understanding their noble intentions, foolish people tried to ridicule and persecute them. Right from his birth, Jesus had to face many trials and tribulations. When the name and fame of noble souls spread far and wide, many people become jealous. Asuya (jealousy) and Anasuya (absence of jealousy) are sisters. The history of Bharat is replete with many examples that bear testimony to this truth. Asuya has three children, viz, kama, krodha and dwesha (desire, anger and hatred). The Divine Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheswara were born to Anasuya. The three wicked sons of Asuya (i.e. desire, anger ,and hatred) caused a great deal of suffering to Jesus, who strove tirelessly for the peace and welfare of society. Jesus was the epitome of compassion and the refuge of the poor, needy and forlorn. But many people tried to create troubles for Jesus, since they did not like his sacred teachings and activities. Their hatred for Jesus increased day by day. Even the priests turned against Jesus as they became jealous of his growing popularity. The fishermen held Jesus in high esteem. They started following his teachings and became his disciples. Many people out of jealousy laid obstacles in his path and even tried to kill him.

Jesus had twelve disciples. Judas was the twelfth disciple, who ultimately betrayed Jesus. At that time, there was only one Judas, but today there are many such 'Judases'. Today the world is engulfed in unrest because of the rise in the number of betrayers like Judas. They are so mean-minded that they are easily tempted by money. Judas betrayed Jesus for just a few pieces of silver. Even two thousand years ago, money became the primary objective of man. Because of their greed for money, people resort to evil and unjust ways, distort the truth, and make false propaganda. This was the case then and it is so even now. No one needs to be afraid of such false allegations. Why should one be afraid of the mistake that one has not committed? In the past, many evil-minded people were jealous of the divine personalities who attained worldwide fame through their teachings of truth and righteousness. Even today there is no dearth of such wicked people.

Ultimately, what happened to Judas? He felt miserable for having betrayed Jesus for monetary gains. He shed tears of repentance. He hit himself, saying, "Fie on me! I am a traitor. I betrayed my own master and God." Betrayal of God is the worst of all sins. Such betrayal can never be atoned in any number of births. So, never try to betray God. Love all. Salute even those who criticise you, because Divinity is present in all. Do not give scope for anger and spoil your mind. Pray to God with love. Even in the past, all noble souls and incarnations had to put up with criticism.

Consider love as your very life. Love alone makes one's life sacred. One with love alone is a true human being. Love is man. Man is love. Man is God and God is love. It is love that unifies all. So, develop love. Tread the path of truth and righteousness and lead a peaceful life. These four values are the life supporting principles. There are no greater powers, no greater ideals, and no greater supports than these human values of Sathya, Dharma, Santhi, and Prema. Adhere to these four values and carry on with your life sojourn.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 2000

No spiritual practice can yield the desired result if the senses are misused. Have sacred vision. Speak good words. Hear only what is good. Entertain noble thoughts. There is no greater spiritual practice than this. This was the teaching of Buddha. The same was taught by Jesus too.

The fishermen wanted Jesus to fulfil their worldly desires. Peter wanted more fish. But ultimately, he realised the futility of worldly desires. He wanted to go beyond the level of body and the mind as per the teaching of Jesus. Jesus told them to give up hatred and to love all and serve all. He exhorted them to develop faith in the principle of unity. Many disciples of Jesus interpreted the teachings of Jesus in their own way.

When he was being crucified, he heard an ethereal voice, "All are one my dear son, be alike to everyone ". When the mother Mary was shedding tears, Jesus told her, "Death is the dress of life." Death is like changing of dress. Do you find anybody wearing the same dress every day? Just as you change your dress every day, you change the body from birth to birth. It is the body that dies, not the life principle. The Spirit is immortal and non-dual. To realise the non-dualistic nature of the Spirit was true wisdom, said Jesus.

Mathew was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. He was an income tax collector by profession and used to meet the fishermen to collect taxes. Jesus used to impart sacred teachings to the fishermen everyday. Mathew noted down all his teachings and wrote the holy Bible. Later on, many others wrote the Bible based on their own feelings. Nowhere has Jesus ever stated that he was God or the Master. He always addressed God as his Father. He has shown the path to experience unity. He never gave scope for multiplicity. He always said that all were divine.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 2001

Jesus was a noble soul. He declared that he was the son of God, but he never said that he was God. When Jesus was born, three royal wise men from the east were guided by a star to a cowshed in Bethlehem where the baby Jesus lay in a manger. He was radiating divine effulgence. The first of them said, "This child will love God." The second said, "He will be loved by God." The third said, "He will love one and all. He is not different from God." The one who loves God is the messenger of God; the one whom God loves is the son of God; the one who understands the principle of unity becomes one with God. This is the inner meaning of the statements given in the Bible. The one you think you are; the one others think you are and the one you really are. You should understand the import of these statements.

God is not moved simply by sweet words. You must translate those sweet words into action. You may be a great hero in giving lectures on a platform, but if you are a zero in putting them into action, it will be of no use. You must become heroes in practical life. That is what gives Me happiness. Jesus Christ and Mohammad were highly noble. How could they acquire such greatness and goodness? It was only by their good deeds. Therefore, you must acquire goodness along with greatness. In fact, goodness is greater than greatness. Several great souls took birth in this land of Bharat. Saint Thyagaraja in one of his famous Kirtans sang, "Endaro Mahanubhavulu, Andariki Vandanamulu ?" (there are several great souls, I prostrate before all of them). A great saint Thyagaraja himself, exhibited such humility.

Whoever has acquired the quality of love will never be hated by others. Even the wild animals will not harm you when you have love. The great rishis of yore spent their lives peacefully in dense forests amidst wild animals. The wild animals fought among themselves, but they did not cause any harm to these rishis. What is the reason? The rishis possessed one single weapon of love which protected them from these wild animals. In fact, these wild animals also used to love these great rishis. What man has to acquire is this great weapon of love. Love alone can protect us, not atom bomb or hydrogen bomb. Consider My own example. I have one and only weapon, that is love. Because of this, millions of people from every nook and corner of the globe gather around Me. Did I ever send any invitation to you? No. It is only My pure and unsullied love that draws you here.

A recollection of Swami's Divine Messages for Christmas [2]

Develop the love of God. All other forms of love are not love at all, but only fleeting and impermanent attachments. Man's biggest folly is forgetting his divinity. All should realize that they come from God. All are children of God. Everyone should seek to get nearer and nearer to God. That is sadhana. You must feel that God dwells in your heart ( Hridayavaasi). You must develop compassion in the heart, because without it the heart is only a stone.

That is the message of Jesus - the message of love. Love is God. Live in love. Start the day with love. Spend the day with love. End the day with love. This is the way to God. Only the person who is filled with love will be dear to the Lord.

Today there are devotees here from many countries - Germany, Japan and others. Whatever happiness you may have experienced here, you will have to go back to your countries when your money is exhausted or your visa expires. Your aim must be to acquire a permanent visa to stay here permanently. That is got by God's grace. You can get it through love and love alone. When you have that love, your proximity to God is ensured for ever.

Embodiments of Love! There is love in everyone of you. Develop that love. Share it with others. When you have this love there is no need for you to go in search of ashrams. There are some foolish persons who go on hopping from one ashram to another. This is sheer folly. There is no need to go anywhere. The Divine is in your heart. Adhere to one belief firmly. Do not change your faith from day to day. Follow one path with firm faith. That is the Love principle.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 1996

Where there is love, there is no room for hatred. Do not be envious of anyone. When this evil quality appears, Love takes to flight. A pure heart is the abode of Love. Where there is Purity, there is Unity. Unity leads to divinity.

Today Purity is absent. How, then, do you realize Divinity? You must offer everything to God without any desire. Dedicate your all to God. This was the teaching of Jesus. He considered everything as an offering to God.

When he was being nailed on the cross, people around were weeping. At that moment an ethereal voice declared: "All are one, My dear Son! Be alike to everyone. " Jesus declared: "Death is the dress of life." Just as we change our clothes, we change also our bodies. The bodies are vestures (for the indwelling Spirit). Hence bodies should be regarded as mere vestures. We should not worry about the body.

How many heed such sayings? You must learn to lead ideal lives. That is the right way to observe the birthday of Christ. Few care to observe the ideals of the great teachers.

Christ was the victim of envious persons who were opposed to His teachings and who leveled accusations against Him. Devotees of God should not mind the criticisms of envious persons. All good people have to face such troubles. They should treat everything as meant for their good.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 1997

When Jesus was born three Arabian kings came to see Him. They were overjoyed at seeing the newborn babe. While returning, the first king said to Mary, "Mother, you have given birth to a child who loves God." The second king said, "Mother you have given birth to a child who will be loved by God." The third king said, "Mother Mary your child is not different from God, both are one and the same." Once we understand the inner meaning of these three statements, we will know the truth. The one who loves God is the Messenger of God; the one whom God loves is the Son of God; the one who understands the principle of unity becomes one with God.

Worship Jesus by following His ideals. Jesus pointed to three stages. The first one is, "I am the Messenger of God." He wanted to propagate the message of God. The second one is, "I am the Son of God." The son has a claim to father's property. What is the property of God? Truth, Love, Forbearance, Peace and Righteousness are the properties of God. So, man has to strive to attain these qualities. He has to practice, experience and propagate these virtues. Only then man deserves to be called Son of God. The third one is "I and My Father are One." This stage is attained when the principle of unity is realized. When Jesus reached this stage, He had no suffering at all. He was always blissful and was prepared for anything. Even at the time of crucifixion, Jesus was smiling, because he realized that He was not the body. Body is bound to perish, but the indweller has no birth and death. Truly speaking the indweller is God Himself. Jesus understood that body was merely vesture, and He was the indweller.

You should have the firm faith that you are the Messenger of God. Propagate Swamis message to the entire world. Some people may like it and some may not. Do not bother about what others say, be it "yes" or "no." 'No' and 'yes' relate only to you, but for Sai everything is yes, yes, yes. There are no defects in God. All words and deeds of God are perfect. You see the reflection, reaction and resound of your feelings. They are psychological in nature. God always gives good alone. Understand and experience this truth.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 1998

Today (Christmas) is mainly celebrated by Christians, but do not make the mistake that it is only for Christians. It is a holy and happy occasion to be celebrated by the entire mankind. Get rid of religious and philosophical differences and enlarge your mind (Matha - religion and Mathi - mind). You house the single divinity only in your heart. Then the entire humanity becomes a single race. There is only one religion in the universe and that is divine love (Prema). The one without this principle of love in his heart is not a Christian, Muslim nor a Sikh and is no better than a demon. This principle of complete unity of all religions is now manifested only in Prasanthi Nilayam. Imagine what a phenomenon it is that Christians from so many countries in this world have joined together here to celebrate Christmas. There are people from sixty-four countries assembled here. They are all of one heart. This is true devotion. Swami reiterates it is not a celebration for Christians only but is a holy occasion for the entire humanity. It is the desire of Swami that such differences are completely eradicated.

A recollection of Swami's Divine Messages for Christmas [1]

Wealth without wisdom becomes an instrument of exploitation and tyranny. Wisdom without wealth becomes mere fantasy and a bundle of blueprint. Use makes them worthwhile; misuse makes them disastrous. It is like the knife in the hands of maniac, it becomes an instrument for murder; in the hands of a surgeon, it becomes an instrument which saves a life! Are you doing good with wealth? Are you benefiting others by means of wisdom, that is the test. This day, Christmas, when you celebrate the birth of Christ, resolve to lead the lives of Loving Service, to the weak, the helpless, the distressed, the disconsolate. Cultivate tolerance and forbearance, charity and magnanimity. Hold dear the ideals He laid down and practice them, in your daily lives

There is one point that I cannot but bring to your special notice today. At the moment when Jesus was emerging in the Supreme Principle of Divinity, He communicated some news to his followers, which has been interpreted in a variety of ways by commentators and those who relish the piling of writings on writings and meanings upon meanings, until it all swells up into a huge mess.

The statement itself has been manipulated and tangled into a conundrum. The statement of Christ is simple. "He who sent me among you will come again!" and he pointed to a Lamb. The Lamb is merely a symbol, a sign. It stands for the voice--Ba-Ba; the announcement was the Advent of Baba. "His Name will be Truth," Christ declared. Sathya mean Truth. "He will wear a robe of red, a bloodred robe." (Here Baba pointed to the Robe He was wearing!). He will be short, with a crown (of hair). The Lamb is the sign and symbol of Love. Christ did not declare that he will come again, he said, "He who made me will come again." That Ba-ba is this Baba, and Sai, the short, curly-hair-crowned red-robed Baba, is come. He is not only in this Form, but he is in every one of you, as the Dweller in the Heart. He is there, short, with a robe of the color of the blood that fills it.

Divine Discourse: December 24,1972

There are many who are deeply devoted to Jesus. Their duty is to glorify the great message of Jesus. The most important message of Jesus is the establishment of "Peace on Earth and goodwill among men." Without peace, mankind cannot achieve progress in any sphere--- material, spiritual or moral.

In the Treta Yuga, Sri Rama came to establish the reign of Sathya and Dharma (Truth and Righteousness). In the Dwapara Yuga, Sri Krishna came with the mission to promote Prema and Shanthi (Love and Peace). In the Kali Yuga (the present yuga), Sathya, Dharma, Shanthi and Prema are the purposes of the Divine Mission. Hence you must make these four the guiding principles of your life. When you adhere to these four principles, Ahimsa (Non-violence) issues as a natural result. There is no use in merely invoking the name of Jesus and praying to Him without regard to His most vital message: "God is in everyone. Do not revile anyone. Do not cause harm to anyone." This was Jesus's greatest message.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 1985

Jesus taught that God is Love. Instead of recognizing this basic truth, men are allowing hatred, envy and other evil qualities to pollute their love. Man is gifted with the quality of love not to express it for selfish purposes but to direct it towards God. Jesus declared that there was nothing great about returning good for good. They should do good even to those who harm them.

It is not right to celebrate Christ's birthday by feasting, drinking, singing and merry-making. The ideals taught by Jesus should be put into practice. That is the right way to celebrate his birthday. Whomsoever you adore, you must try to live up to his teachings. What kind of devotion is it when the devotee does not practice what he professes? It is pseudo-devotion.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 1988

Today we celebrate the birthday of Christ. It is said that when Jesus was born in a manger, three kings were led by a star to Jesus's place of birth. ln fact, they were not kings but three shepherds. One of them, seeing the infant Jesus, observed: "This child will be a lover of God". A second one said: "No. God will love him." The third one said: "Verily He is God Himself" .

The true significance of these three statements is: To love God is to be His Messenger. To be loved by God is to be a son of God. The final state is to be one with God. As Jesus said: "I and my Father are one". Thus all persons are messengers of God. This means that they should divinise themselves. When can men call themselves Sons of God? Recognize what pure actions are done by God, selflessly for the sake of all. There is no trace of self-interest in Him: Everything He does, says or thinks is for the good of others. On the other side, everything men do, speak or think is born out of selfishness. Men have become puppets in the hands of selfishness. Men can describe themselves as "Sons of God" only when they are completely free from selfishness and become Godly. To call yourself the "Son of God", you have to manifest the qualities of the Father.

Jesus exemplified the spirit of social service. The inspiration for this came from His mother, Mary. From His childhood Mary taught Him such good qualities as truth, kindness, compassion and justice. Jesus had learnt His lessons from His mother and developed His spiritual faith. After they returned from Jerusalem, Jesus felt that service to His parents was His foremost duty, because He owed everything to them. ln this spirit, He used to assist His father in His carpentry work. Joseph passed away when Jesus was thirty. He sought His mother's permission to devote Himself to the service of the needy and the forlorn. After leaving home, Jesus had Himself baptized by John. Then for forty days Jesus observed severe austerities without food and drink. At first He considered Himself as a "Messenger of God". After the penance He realised He was the Son of God. He began His ministry with a group of fishermen as His first disciples. He taught them that they should first seek the Kingdom of Heaven. To enter that Kingdom they had to cultivate loving hearts. Then, their hearts would become the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus further declared to them: "I and my Father are One".

Christmas is celebrated today in many countries. In every country small groups of people go to their respective churches, listen to the sermon and return to their homes. In some places people eat, drink, and make themselves merry. But nowhere in the world can you find Christmas being celebrated with the solemnity and holiness obtaining in Prasanthi Nilayam. Here are gathered men and women from all countries. There are many denominations among Christians and the members thereof celebrate Christmas in their separate ways. Only in Prasanthi Nilayam do Christians of all denominations and men and women of other faiths join to celebrate Christmas. All of them work in unison. Here is a concrete manifestation of the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God.

Divine Discourse: December 25, 1994

Christ determined to make the giving and sharing of Love his main objective in life. Such love was met with many obstacles and losses. Christ considered a true man to be the one who can face obstacles and move forward in Love. Do not give in to losses and pain. Do not be carried away with pleasure. Face everything with equanimity.

Christ could never see suffering passively. In Jerusalem doves were sold and killed as an offering. Christ decried the violence committed towards the poor creatures. He began to undertake the holy task of stopping such violence and freeing the captive birds. Some men began to cast aspersions, slandered him and tried to punish him.

"Salutations to any living beings go toward God," say the Vedas. ("Sarva bhuta namaskaram; Keshavam prati gachate.") We think there is no meaning in saluting both the one who praises us and the one who criticizes us. Saluting the one who praises us is understandable, but what is the use of saluting the one who accuses us? We must have continuous relationship with accusations, because without them there is no beauty or value to praise. Without criticism, appreciation loses its meaning. That is why every word, every thought, has some obstacle or no beauty or value to praise. Without criticism, appreciation loses its meaning. That is why every word, every thought, has some obstacle or other. For the good, bad is a shadow. For pleasure, difficulty is a shadow. All opposites are interrelated. The pleasure and pain, the profit and loss, exist together. Christ went on pursuing his path in the face of many obstacles with strength and endurance. He gave His life for the service of men, for the principle of Love and propagation of Love.

The season of Christmas is associated with Christmas Grandpa or Santa Claus. Tokovan was his original name. He was born in Turkey. He began his career as a priest and gradually began to attain spiritual heights. How did he become a spiritual giant? By the spirit of sacrifice. He used to give a chocolate or a doll or a gift to any child he met. All his life he kept on giving continuously. When Christmas was approaching, all the children used to run behind Santa Claus. He used to carry all the gifts in a bag and distribute to all the children. In what manner did he distribute? He said, "Here is a token of God's Love. Here is a token of God's Love," and thus distributed them. Eventually he came to be called Christmas Grandpa, and his original name was forgotten.

The important message which I want to convey today, which Jesus also propagated, is one of Love and compassion. So boys and girls, on this holy and sacred day, when we celebrate the birthday of that holy personage, we must conduct ourselves in accordance with his message. It is easy to celebrate birthdays, but we must also keep in sight the purity and message of the person whose birthday we celebrate.

If you are devotees of Sai, what are the ideals of Sai? Share Love, be united, consider all to be the children of God. Foster the brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God. When we accept and obey these, we can call ourselves devotees of Sai.

Swami's answers:

Q: How we should lead our life, Swami?

A: Form small Satsanghas and meet regularly for Bhajans and mutual
consultation about spiritual matters. Read some fine spiritual
classics like Bhagavata. Fill your eyes with the beauty of His form,
your ears with the story of His Leelas, and your hearts with the
sweetness of His Glory; inspire yourselves by seeing Him everywhere.
Think of His immanence in every hill and dale, every man and beast,
every tree and insect. You will be really thrilled by the joy of
that vision.

Q: What is principle of living, Swami?

A: One of the first principles of straight living is - Practice
silence, for the voice of God can be heard in the region of your
heart only when the tongue is stilled and the storm is stilled and
the waves are calm. There will be no temptation for the others to
shout, when you talk to them in whispers. Set the level of the tone
yourself; as low as possible, as high as necessary to reach the
boundary of the circle you are addressing. Conserve sound, since it
is the treasure of the element Akaasa, an emanation from God
Himself. You must all study the Gita daily. Read a few slokas and
meditate on the meaning yourself; it will dawn on you in the silence
of your heart. You need not read elaborate commentaries. Each word
in the Gita is a gem. No more do you need gemstones for the ear, the
nose and the neck; have the gem of the Gita slokas in your heart;
let them activate your intellect and your hands. We shall act ever
as if we are in the presence of God, as if God is watching and
weighing every thought, word and deed. See yourselves in all; see
all in yourselves; that is the road to lasting peace and joy. Let us
not seek the outer empire; let us become the rulers of the inner
empire. Let us not try to defy the outer enemy, leaving the inner
foe to
grow in striking power. We have Krishna with us, and so, who can
defeat
us? We shall win through his Grace.

Q: What is significance of your Avatar, Swami?

A: My task is not merely to cure and console and remove individual
misery. It is something far more important. The important task of
the mango tree is to produce mango fruit. The leaves, the branches,
and the trunk of the tree are useful in their own way, no doubt, but
the main aim is the fruit. So also from the plantain tree, the fruit
is the main gain. The leaves and the edible core of the stem are all
incidental. So too, the removal of misery and distress is incidental
to My Mission. My main task is the re-establishment of Veda and
Shastra in the heart of Bharatavarsha and the revival of knowledge
about them in the people. This task will succeed.

A strong will is the best tonic:

The will becomes strong when you know that you are a child of
immortality or a person who has earned the Grace of the Lord.
Medicine and hospitalization are for these who hesitate and argue
about this doctor being more efficient than the other and this drug
being more powerful than the rest. For these who rely on the Supreme
Doctor, His Name is the drug that cures.

The Vital Difference Between Human Beings and Animals:

"Human beings have the power and also the authority to conquer maya
and totally free themselves from delusion. If man takes the trouble
and makes the effort, he will be able to directly experience the
atma and, thereby, know himself as the divinity that he truly is.
With the help of spiritual exercises he can reach nirvana and be
immersed in supreme bliss.

God is your only true friend Taking God as your friend, your heart
as the teacher and the world as the great book, acquire all the
knowledge you wish to. You should master this Pusthaka (book) using
your Masthaka (head)! Books printed on paper are not so important as
this book composed and written by God himself. It is available
everywhere, to everyone at all times and is absolutely free. So even
as you pore over your regular textbooks, remember your Guru, the
heart; and make sure you always have your true friend God near you!
The Divine lives in the Hearts of All.

Character is Power.

Even the acquisition of knowledge demands a good character. Without
character, wealth, education, social status, all these are of no
avail. Among the qualities that make up a flawless character, love,
patience, forbearance, steadfastness, and charity – these are the
highest; these have to be revered. So everyone must yearn to attain
flawless character without any trace of evil.

Who is Sathya Sai Baba?

You may have heard of Sai Baba first in his role as educator,
healer, spiritual leader, social worker. Thousands of people in
every country in the world are witnesses to these aspects of Baba's
life and work.

These followers are not members of a sect or cult, but people of all
walks of life, races, cultural background and religions. For Baba
encourages us to seek the underlying unity and divinity in
ourselves, in others and in our lives. He says:-

"There is only one religion, the religion of Love,
There is only one language, the language of the Heart,
There is only one caste, the caste of Humanity,
There is only one God and he is Omnipresent".

Baba inspires not only through his teachings but above all through
his example; he lives austerely and in ceaseless service to those
around him, making himself approachable and available to thousands
daily, while maintaining a tireless programme of lecturing,
administrating, writing, encouraging the students. He has no
secretary, cleans his own room, accepts no money from anyone (indeed
fund raising is forbidden throughout the organisation).

His manner is always patient, gentle, gracious, often humorous and
playful. Although invited countless times to visit other countries,
Baba has so far stayed in India, (apart from one visit to Africa)
maintaining that one has to put one's own house in order before
advising others.

His birthplace, once a tiny rural village, is now a beautiful
university town with schools and colleges lining its main street; in
addition, hundreds of villages in surrounding areas have been
adopted by Baba's voluntary workers who have built roads, bridges,
schools and dug wells for them. Regular medical camps care for the
health of thousands of local people and Baba's Education programme
has been implemented in schools throughout India and other countries.

Again it is not only his example which inspires but his
extraordinary level of being, which shines through his teachings and
has an impact on all who come into his presence.

His frequently witnessed and documented healings, materialisations
of objects, telepathic powers and appearances in more than one place
at once are due to powers he was born with, not developed by special
disciplines. It is said he is not just a fully realised man but the
Main Spiritual Leader of this Age; his life certainly fulfils
prophecies in several religions. He says:-

"I know who I am; I have come to help you realise who you are".

What are we to make of all this? Could a man who left his village
school at 13 have such a profound knowledge of the world religions
and the ability to teach and explain them with sayings and stories
of Christ-like simplicity? Baba says:-

"Come, test, inquire,taste, experience".

He also says:

"...do not be attracted simply by stories of what I create by a wave
of the hand. Do not jump to conclusions with closed eyes; watch,
study and weigh..."

Since 1950, Sathya Sai Baba's residence and headquarters have been
in Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Perfect Peace), a parcel of land
adjacent to the village. His name spread quickly in India, and then
he became known to people on every continent. For many years
Prasanthi Nilayam has been a gathering site for millions of
spiritual pilgrims, from all religions through out the world.

To his followers, Sathya Sai Baba is accepted as the Main Spiritual
Leader of this age; a Divine Being who has come to earth as a
manifestation of Divine Will to fulfil a cosmic mission. He has
stated:-

"For the protection of the virtuous, for the destruction of
evildoers, and for establishing righteousness on a firm footing I
incarnate from age to age. Whenever disharmony overwhelms the world
the Lord will incarnate in human form to establish the modes of
earning peace, and to re-educate the human community in the paths of
peace."

The fame of Sathya Sai Baba was spread, in the beginning, by the
stories of his "miracles", acts which cannot be explained by science
and which transcend physical laws. His manifestation of material
objects; the creation of sacred ash (vibhuti) on the palm and
fingers of his hand, to be used for spiritual and physical aid;
changing an object from one metal to another metal simply by blowing
on it; all of these and many more, before hundreds of thousands of
people, done "by an act of will."

He is known to heal the sick and maimed and blind; He has protected
from harm those who called for help, even though thousands of miles
away; He has appeared in his physical form in two different places
at the same time; and He has raised from the dead several persons.
And yet, He states,

"You have come to get from me tinsel and trash, the petty cures and
promotions, worldly joys and comforts. Very few of you desire to get
from me the thing I have come to give you, namely, liberation
itself."

It has been said that His greatest miracles are the transformation
of people who come to Him, often with doubts and apprehensions, and
who leave with love in their hearts, peace in their minds, and a
resolve to live a more useful, spiritual life.

Birthday 2003 DISCOURSE

MOTHER'S ROLE IN HUMAN VALUES
(Text of the Divine Discourse delivered by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on 23rd November 2003 at Sai Kulwanth Hall)

Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace, the value of all your education is zero,
Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace, the result of all your good deeds is zero,
Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace, the utility of holding positions of authority is zero,
Bereft of truth, righteousness, love and peace, the sanctity of all your acts of charity is zero,
These four qualities are the four pillars that support the mansion of Sanathana Dharma.

(Telugu Poem)

Embodiments of Love!
The mansion of human life rests on the four pillars of truth, righteousness, love and peace. The safety and security of life depend on these four values. Since ancient times, the culture of Bharat has been able to sustain itself as it is built on the bedrock of these values. Our ancestors led their lives strictly adhering to these eternal values. Bereft of these values, the mansion of life will collapse in a moment. Humanity continues to exist till this day only due to the fact that he/she is practising these four values at least to a certain extent.

The individual child's life is greatly influenced by the qualities of the parents. The loving care of Jijabai made Shivaji a great warrior. Rama's divinity blossomed because of the noble qualities of His mother Kausalya. The twins Lava and Kusha could become powerful and famous due to their noble and virtuous mother Sita. The same can be said of our ancient sages and seers. They could sanctify their lives because of the noble influence of their parents. Today, people neglect their parents as they fail to recognise the impact and influence they bear on their lives. They forget the fact that they could attain exalted position in life only because of their parents. Gandhi became a Mahatma because of his pious mother Putlibai. She used to observe a strict vow wherein she would wait for the cooing of the cuckoo before partaking of her food. However, on one day, she had to wait for a long time for the call of the cuckoo without taking food. The young Gandhi could not bear to see his mother fasting for such a long time. Hence, he went out of the house and imitated the cooing of the cuckoo. Then he came inside and told, "Mother, now that the cuckoo has made its call, please take your food." She at once recognised that her son was telling a lie. Unable to contain her grief, she slapped Gandhi on his cheeks and said, "What sin have I committed that such a liar should be born to me!" She was shedding tears as she spoke. Gandhi repented and prayed for her forgiveness. He took a pledge that he would never utter a lie thenceforth. In this manner, our ancients developed virtues and attained exalted position only because of their mothers. Today, the country is facing hardship as people have no regard for truth and are indulging in falsehood in their thoughts, words and deeds. The welfare of a nation depends on the teaching that the mother imparts to her children. When parents tread the path of truth, the children would naturally emulate them.

In olden days, it was a common practice among the women of Bharat to perform the sacred ritual of Sathyanarayana Vratam, on every full moon day. Likewise, mother Easwaramma used to perform Sathyanarayana Vratam every full moon day in the company of Karanam Subbamma, who was her neighbour. Karanam Subbamma would often tell Easwaramma, "You are performing Sathyanarayana Vratam. With His blessings, you will bear a son. I want you to name him Sathyanarayana." On a particular full moon day, Easwaramma did not have food till very late in the afternoon as she was participating in the Sathyanarayana Vratam being performed in Subbamma's house. The family members including her husband Pedda Venkama Raju were very much upset to see her remain without food for such a long time. Pedda Venkama Raju argued that there was no need to observe such severe austerities. But Easwaramma was determined. She told them not to wait for her saying, "I am not at all hungry. Sathyanarayana Vratam is more important for me than food." After the ritual was completed, Subbamma brought Prasadam (blessed food) for Easwaramma. Only after partaking of the Prasadam did Easwaramma have her food that day. Women in those days used to perform such rituals with all sincerity and devotion. It was only after partaking of Prasadam could Easwaramma conceive. Yad Bhavam Tad Bhavati (as is the feeling, so is the result). Some people have faith in scriptural injunctions and adhere to them with earnestness, whereas some others ignore them. Easwaramma was the one who followed the injunctions strictly. Only after performing the Vratam and partaking of the Prasadam, would she commence her household chores. She was unlettered. But she had unflinching faith in God. During the seventh month of her pregnancy, one day Subbamma told her, "Easwaramma, the child in your womb is safe only due to the grace of Lord Sathyanarayana." She extracted a promise from her that the child would be named Sathyanarayana. The mother of Pedda Venkama Raju was also a great devotee of the Lord. She too was of the opinion that the child should be named after Lord Sathyanarayana.

Prior to the birth of the child, a very significant incident took place. Puttaparthi, was then a tiny hamlet. In the centre there was a well from which people would draw water. One day Easwaramma was fetching water from the well. All of a sudden she saw a white luminous light, emerging like lightning from the sky, entering her womb. There was a sudden gust of wind. Subbamma who came out of her house at that time saw the light entering the womb of Easwaramma. Till this day, I have not revealed this to anyone. I am disclosing this today so that you may understand the significance associated with the advent of the Avatar. A day prior to this, as Pedda Venkama Raju was passing in front of Subbamma's house, she called him inside and told him, "Venkama Raju, tomorrow when the child is born, name him as Sathyanarayana." But he brushed her advice aside saying, it was her foolish imagination.

At 3 o'clock in the morning, at an auspicious moment, the child was born. It is natural for any child to cry when it is born. But this child did not cry at all. The midwife and the people in the household were anxious that the child might be stillborn. Easwaramma too was very much worried. Without anybody noticing her, she pinched the child to make it cry. On the contrary, to her utter surprise, the baby started smiling. Everyone was mystified to see the newborn babe smiling. Just then Subbamma entered the house and said, "Easwaramma, I heard that you have given birth to a male child at an auspicious moment. Can I have a glimpse of the child?" Easwaramma wrapped the child in a cloth and placed him in front of Subbamma. Subbamma was an orthodox Brahmin lady. In those days, orthodox Brahmins would maintain distance from others. If they happened to touch them inadvertently, they would at once have a bath. That was the reason, why Easwaramma kept the baby at a distance from Subbamma. Watching this, the mother-in-law said, "Easwaramma, she has come here with a lot of love and concern to see the child. Why don't you let Subbamma hold the child in her arms? Why do you keep him at a distance?" Easwaramma said, "Oh mother! Subbamma is a very pious and orthodox brahmin lady. She may not like to touch the newborn baby. Hence, we should maintain distance from her." In fact, Subbamma herself had no such discriminatory feelings.

Mother Easwaramma looked after her child with love and care. Days rolled by and the child grew into a boy. He was mithabhashi and mithaahari (one who spoke less and ate less). Easwaramma was mystified by the strange behaviour of her son. Usually children are fond of eating. Especially some people would prefer non-vegetarian items like fish or meat. But her son was totally averse to non-vegetarian food. He would not even visit the houses where non-vegetarian food was cooked. Seeing his noble qualities, Easwaramma realised that the child was not an ordinary one, but one of divine nature. Her eldest daughter Venkamma also recognised the divine nature of the child. Together, they brought up the child with love and care. They would sing devotional songs as lullabies. The child was brought up in such a noble environment.

As there was no proper school in Puttaparthi, Seshama Raju, the elder brother of this body, took Me to Uravakonda and admitted Me in a school. The then Municipal Chairman of Bellary, Rama Raju was a friend of Seshama Raju. He took us to the Virupaksha temple in Hampi during holidays. I was reluctant to enter the temple. Hence, Seshama Raju instructed Me to keep a watch over their belongings as they went inside to have Darshan of the deity. I readily agreed and remained outside. The priest was giving arati to the deity. To their utter astonishment, they found Me standing inside the sanctum sanctorum in place of Lord Virupaksha. Seshama Raju could not believe his eyes. In fact, he was very angry thinking that I was transgressing My limits. He thought it was improper on My part to have entered the sanctum sanctorum. He at once came out of the temple only to find Me there! He again went inside and found Me there also! Still he was having doubts. He told his wife, "You go outside and keep a watch over Sathya. Do not allow Him to go anywhere. Meanwhile, I will go inside and see whether He is still there." She did accordingly. He again saw a smiling Sathya standing in the sanctum sanctorum. He wondered whether it was a dream, hallucination or reality. At that time, his friend Rama Raju noticed a brilliant aura around My face. He revealed this only to his wife and not to anybody else including Seshama Raju. In fact, Seshama Raju was full of doubts.

The vacation was over and we were returning to Uravakonda. Rama Raju brought a pair of knickers and a shirt for Me as parting gift. But I refused to accept them. In those days, wearing a collar pin was considered a fashion. Hence, Rama Raju presented a gold collar pin to Me with the prayer that I should remember him always. Wearing a collar pin was very common among the children hailing from rich families. The collar pin dropped on the way while I was proceeding to the school in Uravakonda. It could not be traced. I at once discarded the books and returned home. I declared:

Know that I am Sai in reality,
Cast off your worldly relationships,
Give up your efforts to restrain Me,
The worldly attachments can no longer bind Me,
None, however great he may be, can deter Me.

(Telugu Poem)

Seshama Raju was not at home when I sang this poem. Later on when his wife told him about it, he laughed and brushed it aside saying, I would have got it composed by somebody. Being a poet himself, he thought it was impossible for a young boy like Me to compose such excellent poetry.

Excise Inspector Hanumantha Rao had great love for Me. Even his children were highly devoted to Me. When Hanumantha Rao came to know about the happenings, he at once came in his car and took Me to his house. He went on questioning, "My dear, did Your brother or sister-in-law scold You or did they beat You? Why have You decided to leave the house?" I sang a song:

The link with the world had gone in the form of the pin; the pilgrimage to Hampi also served its purpose. Baba left home saying that Maya could not bind Him any longer.

(Telugu Song)

I said, "The worldly attachment is like a small pin which I gave up. Hence, I have left the house. I will no longer stay there." I did not even enter the house of Hanumantha Rao. There was a big rock in front of the house. I sat there and did not speak to anybody. Everyone was stupefied beyond words to see the change that had taken place in Me. In the evening, Seshama Raju who was on his way back home from school, tried to take Me with him. But I was firm in My decision not to go home. Then Hanumantha Rao persuaded him saying, "Do not compel Sathya to go with you. Let him remain here for some time. I will bring him to you myself afterwards."

I remained there for some time. Many people came to Me and put all sorts of questions like "Are You a ghost or a demon? Who are You?" I told them, I am neither a ghost nor a demon. "Know that I am Sai Baba in reality." They asked Me, "How are we to believe that you are Sai Baba? Can you prove Your claim?" In fact, in those days nobody in Anantapur District had even heard the name of Sai Baba. I took some flowers in My hand and threw them on the floor. As people were watching wonderstruck, the flowers arranged themselves as the letters Sai Baba in Telugu. Somebody brought a camera and took a photograph of Me sitting on the rock. There was a small stone in front of Me which appeared like Shirdi Sai Baba in the photograph. Many copies were made of the photograph and distributed to all.

The same rock on which I sat that day remains there even today. At the same place, the Andhra State President of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations, Anjanaiah has built a beautiful Mandir with a spacious hall.

Gradually My fame spread far and wide. People from various villages and cities started to flock around Me. People possessed by evil spirits were brought to Me in bullock-carts. They believed that I could drive away the evil spirits. People who were mentally retarded were also brought to Me. True to their faith, the evil spirits were driven away and the patients were cured of their mental ailments. Then they started believing in My Divinity.

As people were coming in large numbers, it was not possible for Seshama Raju to keep Me with him. Hence, he wrote a letter to Pedda Venkama Raju to come and take Me away to Puttaparthi. In those days, Puttaparthi was such a remote village that it would take several days for letters to reach. However, Pedda Venkama Raju received the letter in Bukkapatnam where he had gone to make purchases in the market. The letter said, "Father, it is not possible for us to keep Sathya with us any longer. Please come and take him home at once." Pedda Venkama Raju came to Uravakonda from Bukkapatnam straightaway. He did not have sufficient money in his pocket. He took the bus fare from Seshama Raju and brought Me to Bukkapatnam by bus. From there, we had to walk all the way to Puttaparthi, as there was no transport facility. In fact, the name of Puttaparthi was hardly known beyond the closest localities.

When we reached Puttaparthi, Kondama Raju (grandfather of this body) was at home. He was very austere and God-minded. He told Venkama Raju, "Venkappa, let Him do whatever He wants, do not raise any objection. He is immersed in divine consciousness. Let him stay with me for some time." He kept Me with him and looked after Me with great love and care.

The four brothers - Pedda Venkama Raju, Chinna Venkama Raju, Venkatarama Raju and Venkata Subba Raju decided to live separately. Kondama Raju divided the property equally among them. Pedda Venkama Raju then asked, "Father, whom are you going to stay with? "Kondama Raju replied, "I will not stay with anyone. I do not want any property for myself. Give me Sathya. That is enough. He will look after me." In those days, nobody used to call Me by the full name Sathyanarayana. Everyone used to address Me as 'Sathya'. From then onwards, I stayed with Kondama Raju and served him. Everyday morning and evening, Venkamma used to come to Me. Sometimes she would ask, "Sathya, do You get dreams? Does anyone appear before You and talk to You?" However, I would not say anything to her. She had immense faith in Sai Baba. One day, she prayed, "Sathya, please give me a photograph of Sai Baba." I at once materialised a photograph of Sai Baba and gave her. She kept the photograph with her till her last breath.

One day Kondama Raju called Venkamma and told her, "Our people are living in ignorance, they are unable to recognise the Divine nature of Sathya. He is verily God Himself. He is never hungry, never thirsty. He has transcended hunger and sleep."

Namagiriamma was the actual name of Easwaramma, given by her parents. As Kondama Raju recognised My Divinity, he told his son, Pedda Venkama Raju, to change her name to Easwaramma as he was very well aware that she was the mother of Easwara Himself.

In the middle of the night, Kondama Raju would quietly place his hand near My nostrils, just to see whether I was breathing or not. Sometimes, he would not notice any breathing process taking place. He would only hear the sound Soham coming from Me. People started pouring into Kondama Raju's house to see Me. If anyone questioned them, they would reply, "The grandson of Kondama Raju is one of divine powers. He appears in our dreams and solves our problems."

Once, Seshama Raju came to Puttaparthi during holidays. He did not like so many people visiting the house of Kondama Raju. At that time, he was thoroughly sceptical. He argued with Kondama Raju and told him not to allow anybody to come to his house. In those days, the educated were highly respected in the villages. Seshama Raju had just completed teachers' training. Hence, people in the village considered him to be highly educated. He told Kondama Raju, "Grandfather, do not allow anybody to come near this boy. He does not have any divine power. He is suffering from hysteria." In this manner, he spoke derisively about Me.

There used to be an exorcist in Kadiri who was considered to be an expert in driving away from people the evil spirits that had taken possession of them. I was put in a cart for transporting Me to Kadiri and Venkamma accompanied Me. At no time would she be parted from Me. This so-called exorcist of Kadiri was a thorough drunkard. He asserted that I was possessed by some powerful spirit and boasted that he would rid Me of the evil and belaboured Me with canes, sticks, whips and the like. He even went to the extent of pouring some highly corrosive liquids into My eyes expecting to drive away the spirit in this manner. I submitted Myself to all this torture without demur. In the evening when I got free, I approached Venkamma and asked her to put a little fluid of cow dung dissolved in water. With this treatment overnight, My eyes became clear again. So, for every maltreatment of this kind, I used to go to Venkamma and got the situation remedied. Finally, he had My head shaved and scratched deeply with a sharp knife. The scalp became bloody with severe wounds. Seating Me, water was poured from a height of 10 feet above; it was a terribly painful operation. After this treatment failed, he started rubbing lemon juice into the wounds. Venkamma could not bear the sight of this torture. Quietly, she called the cartman and in the darkness of night, she took Me back home to Puttaparthi.

Steadily the fame of Sai's greatness was spreading far and wide. There was such a rush of people that there was hardly any space for people to stay in the house. Then Pedda Venkama Raju told the people to come to the house only on Thursdays every week. But people protested saying that they could not bear their sufferings till Thursday. Then Subbamma called Venkappa and told him that as it was not practical to accommodate the surging crowds in his house, she would take Me to her house and meet all My needs and also of the visitors. As Subbamma was a Brahmin and Swami belonged to the Raju caste, the Brahmins of Puttaparthi took objection to Subbamma's proposal and decided to boycott Subbamma. She however said that as she was childless and had no inclination to go about visiting anybody, she was not worried by the proposed boycott. "I shall never forsake Sathya", she said. In the village, there were a few Harijan residences. These Harijans were highly devoted to Swami. I used to visit their houses. Even Subbamma accompanied Me to those places. She would not bear to be separated from Me even for a moment. She was looking after Me as her own son. All the Brahmins of the village were completely inimical to Subbamma and even her own mother and brother turned against her. In the path of Divinity incarnate such impediments do arise and she was quite aware of the situation. She declared that she was unconcerned about the enmity of anybody. She was quite firm in her resolve to hold on to Me. Soon, even her house started overflowing with the throng of visitors. So, once Venkappa approached Subbamma and said, "Why should you undergo this kind of ordeals on account of my son? Let us put Him in a separate house." Then Subbamma gave some land between the Sathyabhama and Venugopala Swami temples. A small room was constructed there. They used to lock Me up in the room, but, in spite of the locked closed room, I used to get out and sit on the top of the hill. These kinds of wonders were of daily occurrence.

Meanwhile, those who were opposed to Subbamma on caste grounds decided to get rid of Swami by poison. I was very fond of vadas (Indian delicacy) in those days. So, these people made some vadas and mixed some virulent poison in some of them. Subbamma was warning Me all the time against visiting those houses. But, I used to go to all places despite her objection. On this occasion, I visited this house and picked up the specific vadas that had been poisoned and ate them. The sequel to this attempt is already known.

Another attempt of this kind was when some of them set fire to My improvised house. The house had a thatched roof. Some miscreants set fire to the house. As the fire was raging, people were worried as to what would have happened to Me inside. Suddenly, there was a cloudburst which poured down just above the house and put out the fire. There was however, not a drop of rain anywhere else. Venkamma, Subbamma and Easwaramma came there weeping. The roof was fully burnt and only the walls were standing. They peeped over the wall and found Me sleeping peacefully. I was totally unharmed. Then Subbamma had the lock broken open and took Me away to her house. After several such trials and tests, people developed greater faith in Sai Baba.

In Penukonda, another person started claiming miraculous powers, saying that he was a devotee of Sai Baba. Several others started imitating My dress and manners, started going about trying to collect a following at different places. Merely assuming My name and manners, one cannot have a following indefinitely. People realised the truth very soon.

After this, My sojourn to Bangalore began. Easwaramma and Venkamma entreated that I should not forsake Puttaparthi. I promised them that I would never abandon Puttaparthi. Various royalties including the Maharani of Mysore used to visit Puttaparthi. Those days Chitravathi was flowing most of the time. They used to cross the river by putting planks and driving the cars over such improvised causeways. As, such following by the high and low of the land increased, all opportunities for creating obstacles by the local opponents vanished.

All great men have been moulded by their mothers. It is the high moral character and behaviour of the mothers that would result in the greatness of their progeny. It is the virtues of Kausalya that resulted in the greatness of Rama. Similarly, Sita brought up Lava and Kusa to be great. In this manner, virtuous mothers were responsible for ideal children. After I had promised Easwaramma, I never abandoned Puttaparthi. The whole world may flock here but I shall not leave Puttaparthi. Generally, the Avatars adhere to their place of birth. If you uproot a plant from here and plant it elsewhere, how long will it survive? A tree should grow where the seed sprouted. In this manner only, Sathya Sai Baba has retained his roots in Puttaparthi and has made Puttaparthi a place of pilgrimage. When the High School at Bukkapatnam was established, they requested Me for a prayer song and I composed a suitable verse emphasising the unity in diversity of the people of Bharat.

The power of motherhood is indescribable. It is the righteous observances and strict adherence to moral values of the mothers that manifest in their children. They (mothers) may be unlettered. Their greatness does not depend on literacy or book learning. It is the unlettered Easwaramma's virtues that have brought about this greatness of the name and fame of Puttaparthi. It is a matter of regret that Easwaramma is forgotten, while her son is extolled. Without Easwaramma, how could there be such a phenomenal Power? Never neglect your parents.

What is the origin of the name of this village Puttaparthi? There is a strange story associated with it. Near the temple of Venugopala Swami, there used to be an anthill in which there was a snake. Everyday the cowherds would take their cows for grazing to the outskirts of the village. One of the cows would go to the anthill and the snake would drink milk from its udder. Everyday the cow would return home with its udder empty. The cowherds found out the reason behind this and planned to kill the snake. One day as the snake was drinking milk from the cow, they hit it with a boulder. The snake got enraged and pronounced a curse on them, saying, the cowherds and their cows would no longer be able to live in the village. That is why, the cowherds left Puttaparthi village and built their houses near Gokulam. Even today you can see it for yourselves. The boulder with which the cowherds tried to kill the snake is now being worshipped as Venugopala Swami idol.

Today I narrated at length all this in order to make you aware of the significance of the names Sai Baba and Puttaparthi. Puttaparthi has a great history behind it. Many eminent people visited this place. Many people of affluence lived here and brought great name and fame to this village. In those days, the Mysore Maharaja and his mother used to come here quite frequently. Many such eminent personalities recognised the greatness of Puttaparthi and revered it.

The Lord of Puttaparthi will protect you always,
He is the embodiment of compassion,
He will hold your hand and take you across the ocean of life,
He will never forsake you under any circumstances.

(Telugu Poem)

Embodiments of Love!
You are really fortunate, having done great merit, for you are able to enjoy the Divine proximity of Sai. It is your great good fortune that you are able to sing with Swami and play with Him. You are with Sai and Sai is with you. That is why I often say, "I and you are one." The power and glory of God is beyond the ken of human understanding. Develop unwavering faith in him.

Students!
Having come to Puttaparthi and studied here, you should make every effort to uphold the prestige of Puttaparthi. I want to bring to your notice one important thing. Usually students like to spend their vacations at their respective homes. But here the students do not like to go home even after the vacation starts. Only very few of them go home. Most of them like to stay back even after completing their post graduation. What is the reason for this? Here is the greatest Divine magnet. God attracts one and all. His power is beyond all estimation. In the years to come, you will experience the power of this magnet more and more.

(Bhagavan sang the Bhajan, "Hari Bhajan Bina …" and continued the Discourse.)
(Pointing to Dr. Anjanaiah, Swami said) He has constructed a Mandir in Uravakonda. The Mandir enshrines the rock on which I sat when I gave the first teaching to mankind. He completed his M.Sc. Ph.D. and was doing a job. Later on, he resigned and dedicated himself to the service of Swami. At present, he is the State President of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Andhra Pradesh. (Pointing to an elderly devotee) He is the father-in-law of Dr. Anjanaiah. He also stays in Uravakonda. He has kept aside 100 acres of land for Swami. He is growing various types of fruits there and sending them to Puttaparthi. At present he has completed 100 years of his life. I want to tell you another important thing. Here, in Prasanthi Nilayam, all the devotees who dedicate their lives to Swami live for full 100 years. Kasturi came here and lived a full life. Similar was the case with Pujari Kistappa. All of you might have heard of Kamavadhani. He was a great Vedic scholar. He came and stayed here for 30 years. Never did he leave Puttaparthi. One day after performing Rama Kalyanam, here in the Mandir, he told Me, "Swami, I am going to My room. I will have a sacred bath and come back." I told him, "You don't need to come back. After bath, have your food and sleep peacefully." He went home and had a bath. As instructed by Swami, he had his food and rested. He died peacefully in his sleep. The name of Sai was always in his mind. He never had any illness. There was another devotee by name Soorayya. He was a bachelor. He had no desires. Prior to coming here, he was working for Venkatagiri Raja. One day he expressed his desire to the Raja that he wanted to go to Puttaparthi. The Raja was very happy and made all the arrangements for his coming here. He stayed here for more than 30 years and served Swami. He too lived for 100 years and died peacefully in his sleep.

(Swami called Sri Gopal Rao to the dais) Many of you might have heard of Gopal Rao. He is also completing 100 years. Even at an advanced age, he used to go to canteen regularly and serve water to the devotees. When he was the Chairman of Andhra Bank, there was a major strike. Many big people were arrested. Indira Gandhi sent him a telegram. That day I happened to go to his house for lunch. I told him, "Gopal Rao, do not yield to political pressure. What you have chosen is the path of truth. Do not budge from it." He obeyed My command. Nobody could touch him. At present he is living in Prasanthi Nilayam happily doing Namasmarana. Dr. Padmanabhan's father, Seshagiri Rao came here at the age of 63 after his retirement. He also lived for 100 years and had a peaceful death. All these devotees led a happy and healthy life. At no point of time did they seek the service of others. I told Gopal Rao that he would die peacefully without depending on others for service. I told him to be courageous. In this manner, many devotees led a long and peaceful life in Divine proximity. Physical body is bound to perish one day or the other. But one should leave the body peacefully without being wholly dependent on others. (At the end, Swami permitted Sri Gopal Rao to speak a few words.)

Convocation 2003 DISCOURSE

(Text of the Divine Discourse delivered by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on 22nd November 2003 at Sai Kulwanth Hall)

This land of Bharat is the motherland for great people, who acquired name and fame in different continents. This land of Bharat is the battlefield where the warriors of the foreign country were driven out and freedom from foreign rule acquired. This land of Bharat has acquired great name and fame for erudite scholarship. This land of Bharat is a divine land which has produced great intellectuals in the fields of music, art, literature and various sciences. Having been born in such a great land of Bharat, Oh students! The responsibility to protect the wealth of righteousness of this country is yours.

(Telugu Poem)

Embodiments of Love!
Bharat has earned great reputation in all fields of human endeavour, be it physical, spiritual, moral and ethical. It is a matter of great pride to declare "I am a Bharatiya". Having been born in this sacred land of Bharat and having enjoyed its wealth, water and food, it is unfortunate that some people feel ashamed to identify themselves as Bharatiyas. Many people born in this sacred land have earned good reputation. But unfortunately, Bharatiyas instead of marching ahead with courage and determination are falling back. Truly speaking, to earn the epithet of Bharatiya is in itself a great honour. Having earned such appellation, the citizens of this country should become role models for the rest of the world. The culture of Bharat is renowned worldwide for its sacredness. It has demonstrated great ideals in moral, ethical and spiritual fields. Having taken birth in such a sacred land, how noble a Bharatiya should be! You should uphold the prestige and honour of this country.

Embodiments of Love!
The sacred culture of Bharat should be practised and propagated in every nook and corner of the country. It should be passed on to generation after generation. But alas! many Bharatiyas are migrating to foreign lands forgetting their own motherland. To forget ones motherland amounts to ingratitude. Every son of Bharat should live true to his name and bring glory to the motherland. But instead some are bringing bad name to the country. Bharat is a sacred land, its glory keeps increasing day by day. You need not make any special effort to bring good name to the country; it is enough if you lead your life in an ideal manner like a true Bharatiya.

Embodiments of Love!
Bharat is the crest jewel among all nations. It rests on the strong foundation of love. It has demonstrated ideals in all fields of life. One who forgets such a sacred land will certainly be put to disrepute. Wherever you go, you should feel proud to proclaim that you are a Bharatiya. People with such patriotism and nationalism are very rare these days. Instead of bringing glory to the motherland, people are going abroad to meet their selfish ends. Having gone there, they forget the motherland and spend their time and energy for the progress of that country. You can very well imagine the fate of a person who forgets his mother. Mother and the motherland are to be revered by one and all. Bharat is the land of the Vedas. The glory of Bharatiya culture cannot be described in words. You should make effort to uphold this sacred culture and earn a good name for yourself. You should strain every sinew and discharge your duties to perfection. But Bharatiyas who are supposed to demonstrate idealism to others are failing in this regard. Since ancient times, Bharat has demonstrated idealism to all nations. The name and fame that Bharat has acquired is unmatched. Bharat is the centre of righteousness. It lays great emphasis on the practise of truth and righteousness. Sathyam Vada, Dharmam Chara (speak truth, practise righteousness). But today people have lost regard for truth and righteousness. Dharayati iti Dharma (that which supports is Dharma). The code of conduct as prescribed by the culture of Bharat is most ideal and should be practised by one and all.

Embodiments of Love!
Ancient Bharatiyas never craved for name and fame. They attained glory on account of their nobility. The culture of Bharat has laid great emphasis on the spirit of sacrifice. Our ancients placed national interest above self-interest. They had no trace of selfishness in them. That is why their glory has not diminished a bit with the passage of time. They took refuge in righteousness. They considered truth as their life-breath. But today are we making any efforts to uphold the pristine glory of Bharat? Days are rolling by but Bharatiyas are not striving for the uplift of the nation, instead they are forgetting their own culture. He is a true Bharatiya who is prepared to sacrifice even his life for the sake of Dharma.

This land of Bharat is the motherland for great people, who acquired name and fame in different continents. Bharat Matha (mother India) was adorned with the garland of righteous people. But such garland has faded today. But the culture of Bharat will never fade with the passage of time. It is eternal and immortal. Ancient Bharatiyas adhered to Sathya and Dharma even in small matters. Sathya and Dharma were their guiding principles. That is why their lives continue to inspire people even after many aeons and generations. But today Bharatiyas are after money. How long will the money last. Money comes and goes, morality comes and grows. You can be called a Bharatiya only when you develop morality.

Students - Boys and Girls!
Remember always that your education is not merely to amass wealth or to eke out a livelihood. Money cannot confer true happiness on you. Do not deviate from Dharma for the sake of Dhana (money). Dharma is our life, truth is our breath. Good reputation is our wealth. You should not crave for worldly name and fame. Once you practise Dharma, you will naturally attain good reputation. Dharma is related to the heart. Practise of Dharma is termed as Ritam which will make you immortal. But today we do not find anybody adhering to Ritam. Bharat has given birth to many great scholars, poets and men of sacrifice who demonstrated great ideals. But today people have forgotten them. We should always remember people who have sacrificed their life for a noble cause and try to emulate them. It is the spirit of sacrifice that has protected and sustained this country for many ages and generations. Sacrifice is the Dharma of Bharatiyas. You should offer your lives for the protection of Dharma and not for amassing wealth.

Embodiments of Love!
Love is the eternal principle that is present in all. There is no human being without love. But he is using his love for selfish purposes. You should eschew selfishness and self-interest and develop spirit of sacrifice with courage and conviction. How can you become courageous? It is possible only when you practise Dharma. Bharat has given birth to many noble persons who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Dharma. Endaro Mahanubhavulu, Andariki Vandanamulu (there are many great souls; I prostrate before all of them). They never craved for name and fame. They led a life of Thyaga (sacrifice). Thyaga is true Yoga. You should practise this Yoga and become deserving of Divine grace. Your studies are not meant for the acquisition of money but for understanding the nature of mind. Today wherever you see, money is given prime importance. Even the field of music has become money-centred. Music can captivate the heart. It is divine. M.S. Subbulakshmi has earned great reputation with her melodious singing. She never craved for money. She dedicated her music to uphold the glory of Bharat. Everyone should strive for the honour of the country. No doubt man has acquired expertise in the fields of music, literature and fine arts, but he is using his skill to earn money. He has become business-minded. Any activity done with a business mind cannot please the heart. You should conduct self-enquiry and develop spirit of sacrifice. Only then can there be a transformation of heart.

Where there is self-confidence, there is self-satisfaction. Where there is self-satisfaction, there is self-sacrifice. And, through self-sacrifice comes self-realisation.

So long as you do not give up selfishness, you cannot achieve anything worthwhile in life. Fish is better than selfish. You should cast aside selfishness and cultivate selflessness.

Embodiments of Love!

You are acquiring various types of education. In spite of his education and intelligence, a foolish man will not know his true Self and a mean-minded person will not give up his evil qualities. Modern education leads only to argumentation, not to total wisdom. What is the use of acquiring worldly education if it cannot lead you to immortality? Acquire the knowledge that will make you immortal.

(Telugu Poem)

You should acquire the knowledge of the Self. Consider it as your very life. Knowledge is your true energy. But man is ruining his energy because of his selfishness and self-interest. You should sacrifice your self-interest. Only then can you be truly called the children of Bharat.

Students - Boys and Girls!
Give up selfishness. Develop the spirit of sacrifice. Be prepared to sacrifice your life for the sake of Sathya and Dharma. Today people are afraid to follow the path of truth. Why should one be afraid to speak truth? In fact, one should be afraid to utter falsehood. One who adheres to truth is always fearless. When you do not follow the path of truth, the fire of fear will burn you to ashes.

Embodiments of Love!
Consider love as your life and truth as your breath. There is an intimate and inseparable relationship between love and truth. Today man uses the word love without actually knowing its meaning. As he does not know the value and meaning of love, he is utilising it for trivial and mundane purposes. He is under the mistaken notion that worldly and physical attachment is love and considers such love as his life. True love will reign supreme only when he gets rid of selfishness and develops spirit of sacrifice. Love is God, God is love. But you are craving for worldly love which is bereft of life. You should aspire for divine love which is your very life.

Today there are many who are highly educated. But what is the help they are rendering to society? Practically nothing. They are acquiring degrees for the sake of earning money. They do not serve society with the spirit of love and sacrifice. Love is the very form of Brahman. True spiritual discipline lies in connecting your love with divine love. Your life will be sanctified when you have steady and selfless love.

Embodiments of Love!
Modern students are taking to wrong path in the name of love. They do not understand what true love is. Love is the gift of God to every man. It should be utilised for the service of society. Unity is very essential for the progress of community. Man should share his love with others. Only then will he have the right to be a part of society.

Embodiments of Love!
Love is a small word, but it is pregnant with profound meaning. But people use it in the worldly sense, "I love you, I love you …" You should be prepared to sacrifice for others all that is dear to you. That is true love. Love is God, live in love. Only then will you be able to understand the true nature of love. Do not misinterpret love in the worldly sense. Do not equate love to physical relationship. You should be prepared to give up your love for love. But today nobody is prepared to sacrifice their life for love. People are ready to take others' life to meet their selfish ends.

Students!
You might have acquired high educational qualifications. But all these will prove futile if you do not earn Divine love. Only God's love is true and eternal. Worldly love is transient. It attracts you for a moment like a twinkling star. Acquire divine love which is the fundamental principle of your life. Be prepared to offer your life for the sake of Divine love.

Students!
All of you should live like brothers and sisters. All are the children of God. When you realise this truth, you will experience true love. You are born to different parents but the life principle in each of you is one and the same. Consider love as your life. Only then the education you acquire will be meaningful. If you forget love, your life becomes meaningless. Live for the sake of love. Share your love with your fellowmen and become recipients of Divine love. What you have to share with others is not worldly love. True love is related to the heart. People talk of Divine love but get intoxicated by drinking the deep wine of worldly love. Love everybody without a trace of selfishness. That is Divine love. Only when you develop such love can you attain the ultimate merger with the Divine. Pray to God for His love. Lead your lives spreading the message of love. Love is the goal of your life. Once you become the recipient of God's love, you will be loved by the whole world. Such is the power of God's love. It is totally selfless and sacred. Hence, always pray for His love.

Embodiments of Love!
I am prepared to do anything, even sacrifice My life for your welfare. I expect from you only one thing - Love God, Live in God. Only then can you be called a true student. If you crave for worldly love, you will become a stupid. Heart-to-heart, love to love - This is the type of relationship you should develop. Do not crave for money. It comes and goes. Share your love with everyone wholeheartedly. Bereft of love, heart becomes dry. Fill it with love and keep it always pure and fresh. Love is not related to materials. It is related to the heart.

Students!
What is Vidya (education)? It is not study of matter. True education is the experience of effulgent love. Any number of electric bulbs cannot match the effulgence of love. Hence, develop love Bangaru! Only then will your education be fruitful. Knowledge is God's gift. It should not be offered to others; it should be offered only to God.

Embodiments of Love!
Love is your life. Love is your goal. The Bhagavadgita also lays great emphasis on the principle of love. Having studied here for a long time, you should fill your life with love. You have immense love for Me. It cannot be described in words. Love others as you love Swami. Give Me your love. Take My love in turn. There is no trace of body attachment in Me. Doctors said they would perform hip surgery on Me. I told "You can do whatever you want. I am not the body. This body is yours." Your love becomes worldly in nature when you have body consciousness. You should develop such love which transcends body consciousness. Only then can you understand the eternal truth. When you truly experience Divine love, you will not lead a worldly life. You will make your love flow incessantly towards God.

(The function concluded with the singing of National Anthem.)

Sathya Sai Baba's letter to his brother, 25 May 1947

On 25 May 1947, at the age of 20, in response to a letter from his
brother who was concerned with what he was doing, Sri Sathya Sai
Baba wrote the following letter. This letter disclosed his mission.
Dr. Gokak's essay, An Historic Letter of Baba (in Golden Age,
Kingdom of Sathya Sai, Brindavan, India, 1979, pp. 1-9), gives
particulars surrounding this letter, and this letter was typed from
that essay.

_______

My dear One! I received the communication that you wrote and sent; I
found in it the surging floods of your devotion and affection, with
the undercurrents of doubts and anxiety. Let me tell you that it is
impossible to plumb the hearts and discover the natures of jnaanis,
yogis, ascetics, saints, sages, and the like. People are endowed
with a variety of characteristics and mental attitudes, so each one
judges according to his own angle, talks and argues in the light of
his own nature. But we have to stick to our own right path, our own
wisdom, our own resolution without getting affected by popular
appraisal. As the proverb says, it is only the fruit-laden tree that
receives the shower of stones from passers-by. The good always
provoke the bad into calumny; the bad always provoke the good into
derision. That is the nature of this world. One must be surprised if
such things do not happen.

The people have to be pitied, rather than condemned. They do not
know. They have no patience to judge aright. They are too full of
lust, anger, and conceit to see clearly and know fully. So, they
write all manner of things. If they only knew, they would not talk
or write like that. We, too, should not attach any value to such
comments and take them to heart, as you seem to do. Truth will
certainly triumph some day. Untruth can never win. Untruth might
appear to overpower Truth, but its victory will fade away and Truth
will establish itself.

It is not the way of the great to swell when people offer worship
and to shrink when people scoff. As a matter of fact, no sacred text
lays down rules to regulate the lives of the great, prescribing
habits and attitudes that they must adopt. They themselves know the
path they must tread; their wisdom regulates and makes their acts
holy. Self-reliance, beneficial activity --these two are their
special marks. They may also be engaged in the promotion of the
welfare of devotees and in allotting them the fruits of their
actions. Why should you be affected by tangle and worry, as long as
I am adhering to these two? After all, praise and blame of the
populace do not touch the Atma, the reality; they can touch only the
outer physical frame.

I have a "Task": To foster all mankind and ensure for all of them
lives full of bliss (ananda). I have a "Vow": To lead all who stray
away from the straight path again into goodness and save them. I am
attached to a "work" that I love: To remove the sufferings of the
poor and grant them what they lack. I have a "reason to be proud",
for I rescue all who worship and adore me, aright. I have my
definition of the "devotion" I expect: Those devoted to me have to
treat joy and grief, gain and loss, with equal fortitude. This means
that I will never give up those who attach themselves to me. When I
am thus engaged in my beneficial task, how can my name be tarnished,
as you apprehend? I would advise you not to heed such absurd talk.
Mahatmas do not acquire greatness through someone calling them so;
they do not become small when someone calls them small. Only those
low ones who revel in opium and marijuana but claim to be unexcelled
yogis, only those who quote scriptural texts to justify their
gourmandry and pride, only those who are dry-as-dust scholars
exulting in their casuistry and argumentative skill --only those
will be moved by praise or blame.

You must have read life stories of saints and divine personages; in
those books, you must have read of even worse falsehoods and more
heinous imputations cast against them. This is the lot of mahatmas
everywhere, at all times. Why then do you take these things so much
to heart? Have you not heard of dogs that howl at the stars? How
long can they go on? Authenticity will win.

I will not give up my mission, nor my determination. I know I will
carry them out. I treat the honor and dishonor, the fame and blame
that may be the consequence, with equal equanimity. Internally, I am
unconcerned. I act but in the outer world; I talk and move about for
the sake of the outer world and for announcing my coming to the
people; else, I have no concern even with these.

I do not belong to any place; I am not attached to any name. I have
no "mine" or "thine". I answer whatever the name you use. I go
wherever I am taken. This is my very first vow. I have not disclosed
this to anyone so far. For me, the world is something afar, apart. I
act and move only for the sake of mankind. No one can comprehend my
glory, whoever he is, whatever his method of enquiry, however long
his attempt.

You can yourself see the full glory in the coming years. Devotees
must have patience and forbearance.

I am not concerned, nor am I anxious, that these facts should be
known. I have no need to write these words; I wrote them because I
felt you would be pained if I do not reply.

Thus, your Baba

Preaching the message of love
By Chandima de Silva

Followers of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba around the world celebrate
his birthday today, November 23. Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born on
this day in 1926 in a tiny, hilly, isolated village called
Puttaparthi in the Anantapur District of the present Andhra Pradesh
state of India. Not only his father Sri Pedda Venkappa Raju but his
grandfather Sri Ratnakaram Kondama Raju had been very pious people
belonging to the Raju lineage of the Kshatriyas.

The family had rich musical, literary and dramatic traditions. Sri
Sai Baba's mother Srimati Eswaramma was also very religious like her
mother-in-law Srimati Lakshamma. Sathya Narayan Raju, now known as
Sri Sathya Sai Baba, or Swami to millions of his devotees, was the
fourth child of Sri Pedda Venkappa Raju and Srimati Eswaramma.

At the age of 14, Bhagavan declared His mission as "I have come to
light the lamp of love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by
day with added lustre. I have not come to speak on behalf of any
teaching, like the Hindu teaching. I have not come on any mission of
publicity for any sect or creed or cause; nor have I come to collect
followers for any doctrine. I have no plan to attract disciples or
devotees into my fold or any fold. I have come to tell you of this
unitary faith, this Atmic principle, this path of love, this duty to
love, this obligation to love."

With the aid of many thousands of active service workers Sri Sathya
Sai Baba runs projects to help poor and suffering people in India
and inspires many others. All this work is done anonymously by
members of the organization with no public fund-raising, which Swami
strictly forbids. The Sathya Sai Organization in many communities in
India provides free services like village hygiene, basic education
in human values and home industry etc. A most significant event for
the population of a large part of the poor state of Andhra Pradesh
was the inauguration on Sai Baba's 70th birthday of the enormous
Rayalaseema water project. In the presence of a crowd of about
200,000, the President of India officially started the turbines that
opened this project, which brings a year-round water supply to each
of over 750 villages and several towns in this dry state.

The establishment of the modern and spacious Sri Sathya Sai Super
Speciality Hospital in Puttaparthi could be undoubtedly described as
a milestone in Swami's selfless service to humanity. All services at
this hospital including complicated surgeries are done free of
charge. Leading surgeons from Italy, USA, UK and India work free for
the hospital. The infection rate at this hospital is reported to be
0.8%, which would be extraordinary even in Britain or the US The
mortality rate is less than 2%, which is regarded as virtually
unprecedented.

Already, more than a dozen Sathya Sai Colleges have been built in
India, admitting several thousands of students annually. These are
all run through private donations, as are numerous Sathya Sai
schools, male and female colleges and one central university, the
Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning.

These institutions are regarded as the foremost educational centres
in a number of Indian states. Sri Sai Baba predicted many years ago
that there will eventually be at least one major Sai college in each
State of India. Sai schools and colleges also exist in other
countries, especially Thailand. Another Sathya Sai College in Zambia
has been in existence for many years. This college teaches the unity
of religions, charges no fees, is run on donations and serves
children from low-income families with scholarships.

A Sai school has also been started near Gothenburg, Sweden and a Sai
College is to start up in Odense, Denmark shortly. The first Sai
School in Sri Lanka is in Jaffna. As a unique service activity, the
Sri Sathya Sai Service Organization of Sri Lanka has established the
Sathya Sai Suva Sevana in Hanwella, a 50-bed Centre for Symptom
Control and Palliative Care of cancer patients. Due to financial
constraints, this centre is presently catering to 15 patients but
the Organization hopes to increase its services in the future.

The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) for young people
from 6 to 16 years of age and a Trust for that purpose were
inaugurated by Sri Sai Baba in 1981. SSEHV is a universal system of
spiritual education, not bound specifically to any particular
religion, sect, church or other single system of moral belief. The
five human values - truth, right action (righteousness), peace (of
mind), love and non-violence - which are the universal ideals in all
world cultures and form the essence of all religions form the basis
of SSEHV.

Sri Sai Baba has told his followers that, even though God is in
everyone and everything, he is aware of this divinity in a way which
others are not. The breadth and depth of spirituality in India's
ancient culture, with its great tolerance and universality, is well
reflected in the works and teachings of Sri Sai Baba. Whether Sri
Sai Baba is the avataric incarnation of Vishnu come again to save
the world from the crisis caused by its periodic decline is a
question of personal conviction, for no one can fully perceive and
know the true nature of such divine incarnations.

In conclusion, let us quote Swami: "Service to man may deal with his
physical or spiritual needs, but serving him by example is best of
all. Do not be a bad example to your neighbours or family members.
Be good and radiate goodness. The truth must be spoken without
hypocrisy or deceit; there must be no motive to injure. Acts must be
regulated by the overall supremacy of righteousness. He is asked not
to neglect the knowledge he has acquired but to ruminate on it and
cultivate it by putting it into practice. Treat the mother as God;
treat the father as God; treat the preceptor as God; treat the guest
as God. These important declarations should be honoured.

The teacher has some very fine advice to give about the gift of
service. Give in reverence; give in plenty; give with modesty; give
as to a friend; give without any thought of reward. Do not give
ostentatiously. All has to be done with humility and reverence. Only
then will these acts bring about cleansing of the mind, which is the
main benefit to be derived from service."

The Guru Shows the Path
SHAMMI PARANJAPE

A guru shows the path of enlightenment to seekers. Gu denotes
darkness (ignorance) and ru denotes the removal of that darkness.
The word guru has two other meanings.

In the first one, gu signifies guna titha (one who has transcended
the three gunas) and ru signifies the formless aspect (one who has
grasped That). Gur means heavy or weighty, signifying the weight of
the guru's wisdom, which can benefit others.

The guru is both a formal teacher and a spiritual preceptor. He is a
storehouse of spiritual energy, which he can transmit to others. He
helps the aspirant to polish his inner self till it reflects the
light of truth. In the Shirdi Sai Satcharita a seeker asks Shirdi
Baba: "Where to go?" Baba replies: "High up". The seeker then
asks: "How to go there?" Baba answers: "Take a guide, he will take
you straight and make you avoid the ditches and wild beasts in the
jungle". Even avatars like Rama and Krishna subjected themselves to
the tutelage of worthy gurus like Vashishta and Sandipani.

The guru-shishya parampara honours the teacher as God and promotes
reverence for vidya (knowledge). It inculcates humility in the
student and respect and gratitude in him for the dispenser of
knowledge. Other noble virtues like discipline, dedication, sense of
duty, sacrifice and compassion also evolve with the guru's help.

A true guru guides you on the spiritual path to salvation. He
promotes your furtherance on the Godward path. He is also the one
who grants great inspiration to good works. 'Gurur Brahma, Gurur
Vishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwara, Gurur Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmaye
Shri Guruvai Namaha'. In this sloka the guru is compared with the
trinity of Gods — Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara — because a sincere
guru has to take on all the three functions of the trinity —
creation (of good qualities), sustenance (of higher nature) and
destruction (of negative qualities).

The best guru dakshina is to adhere to the guru's words. Once, a
guru sent his pupil to collect dry 'useless' leaves from a forest as
guru dakshina. The disciple searched long and hard but was
unsuccessful. Whenever he tried to gather the dry leaves he would be
stopped by forest folk collecting them for fuel to heat water, humus
for plants, for making patravalis (plates) or for preparing herbal
medicines. He went back disappointed, without the guru dakshina. His
guru said that the knowledge he had gained of how 'nothing was
useless', was his guru dakshina, and his purpose in sending the
student to the forest was to teach him that.

By the gurus' grace — guru krupa — everything auspicious is
obtained. However, the path is not easy. The disciple has to offer
his ego at the guru's feet and accept his inscrutable methods of
instruction. The guru's words may not be an explicit command (Sri
Ramana Maharashi hardly uttered a word to his shishyas) — it may
simply involve a subtle fine-tuning to the natural requirements of a
purified conscience. As Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, the ultimate goal
of the guru-shishya relationship is to make the latter attain the
heights of self-awareness, whereby dependence on all external forms -
even that of the guru - is shed, and the Param Guru or the Self is
gloriously revealed within.

Guru Purnima is celebrated on a full moon night in honour of Ved
Vyasa, the Loka Guru. The full moon symbolises the cool clear light
of the guru's intellect which alone can dispel ignorance. Guru Ved
Vyasa arranged and classified the Vedas in their present order and
made them available for the benefit of mankind. Hence he is called
Ved Vyasa.
