The Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force, Inc. addresses the
widespread discriminatory impact of immigration laws on the lives of
lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV through education, outreach, advocacy
and the maintainence of a nationwide resource and support network. The Task
Force has chapters - and hosts free legal clinics - in seven US cities, and

We work, in particular, with individuals seeking asylum due to persecution

While I support a persons 1st amendments rights to protest, I believe that
supporting
a regime such as the present in Iraq is ludricrous. Saddam Hussein as for the
past
twenty years led his people on a crusade of violence and suffering. I
beleive, that he
himself is personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilian
people.

I beleive that the US bombing of Iraq is necessary so as to prevent further
violence and war on Saddan Hussein's part. We should have a rally supporting
President
Clintons decision in this case.

Merely, to have a rally to oppose the use of force is not good enough a
reason, when such force is a necessary means to prevent the outbreak of even
greater violence and harm.

best wishes

aditya

To be an honest critic:

While I am sympathetic to the causes of such rallies, I have a difficult
time genuinely appreaciating such gatherings. I definetly feel that such
rallies are appropriate in their purpose, as they aim to simply bring to
light the fact that the U.S. may not have a right to police the world as
they wish, whether it be in Iraq, South Asia, or anywhere else...

But too many times some of these rallies get too emotional, and in turn
what starts out to be a purposeful gathering turns into an event of
purposeless U.S. bashing, and hence an air of "unpatriotism" sets in. For
example, here at Columbia U., a couple of rallies around campus became
a millitant cry to denounce the U.S. completely; not effectively
communicating any of the numerous reasons the U.S. should alter its stance
on Iraq.

The U.S. can be very skewed, contradictary, and selfishly motivated in its
foreign policy. And we need more rallies that effectively educate...not
inspire hatred. I am sure there must be several rallies that do
effectively do that, so I don't want to label all such rallies or
gatherings as ineffective...its just that several of the ones I have seen
till now end up being full of undirected vengeance. I would want to be a
part of rallies that are more in tune with the people. We often forget
that we are fortunate to actually be in a country where we have the
ability to hold a rally and protest...and to not effectively utilize such
a priviledge is a waste.

If this is a list serv that is concerned with issues of South Asia,
shouldn't we frame things in a more transnational framework, and not be
bound to being "patriotic" to nation-states? Thanks Jennifer for posting.
I am very interested to hear about how people are organizing and thinking
about the current situation in Iraq, because there are very definite links
between the Middle East and South Asia, that can concern members of this
list.

> New law to let Govt intercept Net mail

> If the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has its way with the new Cyber
> Laws, the Government will be empowered to intercept any internet
message, coded or otherwise, and keep tabs on all ebsites created by
> subscribers. So, pornographic sites are out, as is internet telephony.
> Set to be introduced in the current session of Parliament, the new
> laws put a Government-appointed Central Authority Controller at the
> helm of cyber affairs in the country. The draft Bill -- to be called
> Information Technology Act, 1998 once okayed -- has been finalised by
> the Department of Electronics (DoE) and sent to the Law Ministry for
> clearance. It will then be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval. The
> Act provides for interception of messages coming through any Internet
> Service Provider (ISP) and not just through Videsh Sanchar Nigam
> Limited (VSNL). In case of encrypted messages, the onus to decode will
> rest with the sender. This, DoE sources said, is to safeguard the
> country's security. The Act also entails the Government to issue fresh
> guidelines on security management. Intelligence and security agencies
> -- the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau
> (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) -- will have dedicated
> lines to intercept messages for ``valid reasons of security'' but will

> will also ensure security of information. For that, a system of
> ``distant signature'' will be introduced, which is like a user

> Section 29 of the Indian Penal Code, Income Tax Act and the Copyright
> Act.Those accused of computer offences will be tried by special courts
> -- and not civil courts -- to be constituted under the Act. As for
> pornographic sites and internet telephony, it will be the
> responsibility of the Internet Service Provider to ensure that these

Dear Friends:

Have you taken a look at Mattel's new Barbie doll? Please do
(http://www.barbie.com/collectors/pshow/pshow_h/h_20648.html). This new
product, available in December 1998, features "Fantasy Goddess of Asia
Barbie." The doll is one of the International Beauty Collection series. I
will not insult your intelligence by describing the doll's looks or attire.

I call your attention to the exoticization that Asian women have
historically suffered in the West. I call your attention to the racist
violence that is integral to and a result of this grotesque fascination
with Asian "femininity." I call your attention to the stereotypes that
each of us carry as a consequence. "Fantasy Goddess of Asia Barbie" is
obviously designed to satisfy the White male gaze that has promoted
trafficking of Asian women by legitimizing industries such as the "mail
order brides."

Manavi is launching a campaign to stop production of this doll.
Please write a letter of protest in your own words to the President of Mattel,
Inc., and mail it to:

Mattel, Inc.
333 Continental Blvd.
El Segundo, CA 90245-5032

If you need more information about this campaign, call our offices
(908-687-2662) to get our next newsletter. Thank you for your concern.

                                                         Sincerely,

                                                         Shamita Das Dasgupta

To all those who have signed and forwarded the petition regarding the
federal hate crimes legislation:

Unfortunately, as the 105th Congress has adjourned, the legislation has now
expired. It must be reintroduced in the 106th Congress. The House will need
a new sponsor as Charles Schumer (D-NY), the House sponsor of the bill, has
been elected to the Senate.

If you would like to stay abreast of hate crimes issues and legislation,
the India Abroad Center for Political Awareness maintains a listserv
specifically on this topic. To sign up, please visit our website at:
www.iacfpa.org/involve.htm

IACPA will be working with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the
nation's largest civil rights coalition, to pass this important piece of
legislation. We hope that you can join us in this effort.

-Debasish Mishra
Executive Director, IACPA

hi all,
a friend of mine asked me to forward this to this list. i received the
following msg from a friend of a friend, wayland quintero from the NYC-
based asian american theatre troupe SLANT. it's about how denny's has
placed a huge ad in A. magazine... read on!
:)

***************************************
Dear Friends,

Recently I saw an ad for Denny's restaurant in the Dec./Jan. issue of A.
Magazine. It is a full page photo of the face of a young AA college-age
female on a cel phone with the line "Meet me at Denny's," and continues
with a Denny's litany of their non-discrimination policy, practices,
blah, blah, blah...

In light of Denny's past history of bigotry and most recent case where a
group of Asian American students at Syracuse were denied service and
physically battered on the premises (a group of African American
students who tried to intervene were also subsequently denied service),
it seems highly suspect on Denny's part and disappointing at the very
least that A. Magazine- Inside Asia America, would agree to run this ad.
The Syracuse case is still in discovery and it seems as if Denny's is
attempting to sugar coat their bigotry perhaps in anticipation of a
trial.

I spoke with Karen Lam at A. Magazine and though she did not agree with
running the ad, it nonetheless ran. It was not her final decision. But
now as the current editor she has encouraged me and others to write
letters to the editor.

Therefore if you and others have seen this ad and feel strongly enough
about it could you please email your letter to the editor A. Magazine at
karenlam@... no later than wednesday, dec. 9th, for it to
appear in the Feb./March issue. Pass it around!

Much thanks,

Wayland Quintero

Article briefly mentions that South Asians face discrimination in
housing.

Housing Disparities Investigated

By Merle English. STAFF WRITER

With its share of an $11.5 million federal grant, an
Asian-American community organization will conduct tests in Queens to
ferret out discrimination in housing.

The Manhattan-based Asian Americans for Equality received
$213,626 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development as
part of awards
to groups in 42 U.S. cities to help them crack down on all types of
housing discrimination.

"We plan to do outreach, education and testing," said Christopher
Kui, AAFE's executive director. "Many people have come up to our office
to file complaints under the Fair Housing law."

During testing, people of various racial, ethnic, sexual or
religious backgrounds, as well as some who are disabled, pose as
renters or buyers and check to see if they are discriminated against by
landlords, people selling homes, mortgage lenders, or companies
selling homeowners insurance.

In AAFE's testing, the organization will target mostly instances
of discrimination against Asian-Americans, who are among the largest
group
of recent immigrants to the city.

Kui said many South Asians who have been looking at or renting
houses in some parts of Queens felt they were being discriminated
against by
the home sellers or steered to other neighborhoods by realtors.

"They have come to our office and they want to know about their
rights and their remedies," he said.

Korean-American senior citizens trying to rent apartments have
been told they have to put down three or four months security deposit,
Kui
said, "or they are being asked to have guarantors when they felt they
have sufficient income to rent an apartment."

In addition, he said, "Chinese-Americans come and file complaints
about not getting building repairs while their neighbors in the co-op
or condo buildings are getting it done quickly . . ."

The grants, funded under HUD's Fair Housing Initiatives Act, are
intended to reduce discrimination particularly against new immigrants
who have not traditionally sought assistance in fighting housing

In One flows the Many and the eternal stream of multiplicity.
What does it matter whether it manifests through your Name or Mine?
The task is to become that Individual who contains the multiplicity
and has internalized the art of becoming the manifestation of the Many.

JUDGE INCREASES BAIL TO $100,000 FOR DEFENDANTS IN RACIAL ATTACK ON
INDO-CARIBBEAN MAN
>
This morning, New York State Supreme Court Judge Seymour Rotker
increased > the bail for each of the defendants in the brutal racial
attack on Rishi
> Maharaj to $100,000. The defendants Luis Amorim, Peter DiMarco, and
Nuno
> Martins initially were each required to post only $20,000 bail by a
> different judge after they were arrested for attempted murder. The
> defendants attacked Maharaj with baseball bats while shouting
anti-Indian
> slurs in South Ozone Park in September. Maharaj was hospitalized for
> several days with head injuries and required surgery. In November,
a grand
> jury indicted the three defendants on the attempted murder charge.
>
> "We commend Judge Seymour Rotker for raising the bail to a level
that is
> more representative of the attempted murder charge and which
provides a
> sufficient deterrent to prevent the defendants from avoiding trial,"
stated
> Tito Sinha, Staff Attorney for the Asian American Legal Defense and
> Education Fund (AALDEF). "All along we have called for higher bail to
> reflect the viciousness of the attack and the racial motivation of
the crime."
>
> AALDEF has been retained by the Maharaj family to monitor the
criminal
> court proceedings. Many individuals and organizations from across the
> country have expressed their disappointment at the initial $20,000
bail
> level and asked the judge to raise the bail.
>
> AALDEF has also spearheaded a coalition of community groups to do
advocacy
> and education on the broader issues raised by the case. On November
21,
> approximately 100 people attended a Unity Rally in Richmond Hill,
Queens to
> take a stand against racist violence and call for a hate crimes law
in New
> York State. "The rally was an opportunity for the Indo-Caribbean
and South
> Asian community to come together and begin working with other
communities to
> fight racism, hate, and violence," stated Sinha. "As we become more
active
> as a community, we send a strong message that our lives, our
concerns, and
> our needs will be respected."
