Fishing one of the newest Delayed Harvest Streams, The Ararat River.
The Ararat River is just 1.5 hours drive from downtown Charlotte up I-77. It is
right downtown in Mt. Airy. There is a greenway walking path right beside the
stream for easy access and a public rest room at the entrances of the greenway
off of Hamburg St.
Simple directions are to take I 77 to exit 100. Turn right on to NC 89 and dive
to downtown Mt. Airy. NC 89 actually turns right in downtown MT. Airy. Take it
and go two blocks to Hamburg St. Turn left and on the left will be a parking are
with rest rooms.
Alen Baker and I have fished this river four times over the past month and there
are lots stocked fish in this river. Usually we catch them on Y2Ks, olive wooly
buggers, and helgamites. The waters are cold and dragging these flies on the
bottom is the strategy. This river has a sandy bottom vs a rocky bottom and
dragging had less hang ups here.
One concern is that after a rain, this river has risen several feet. Therefore,
check the wed site http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nc/nwis/current/?type=flow for
water height before making the trip.
