FLY OF THE MONTH - SEPTEMBER

Tan Elk Hair Caddis

Arguably the Elk Hair Caddis is one of the top three flies for North Carolina waters. Easy to tie, floats well and being very visible makes it a favorite for fishermen. The visibility of this fly lends itself to being fished in the foam line, in the riffles or around a pools edge. Most fishermen use a size 10 to 20 to imitate the Caddis. Any water where you fish a dry fly in North Carolina for trout would be a place to consider this fly. I have even caught small Largemouth Bass and large Bluegill in warm waters on this fly. Due to the excellent flotation of this fly, it is ideal for use with a dropper.

Recipe:
  • Hook: Mustad 94840, Size 10-20
  • Thread: Black Benecchi 12
  • Rib: Gold wire, wound over body and hackle
  • Body: Hare's ear fur
  • Hackle: Light Ginger
