Hi Ahmed

Completely agree with you regarding the English
thing!!!

But I have a feeling that some of our South American
friends may have difficulties in expressing themselves
in English

I do not see any way out of this

Dear Rotaractors, ex-Rotaractors, and Rotarians,

I have been promising to fill everyone in about what I have discovered and
reached agreement with RI regarding rotaract.org. So here it is!

The list of people I am sending this to has grown considerably since the RI
Convention, as I have found numerous Rotarians who have given us their support
and would like to be kept up to date with the developments about rotaract.org.
These developments have far-ranging impact, as other Rotary sites that have a
similar nature to some of the services previously offered by rotaract.org will
also be affected.

My sincere apologies to anyone who receives several copies of this, but I want
this information to get out to as many people as possible (please Rotaractors,
forward this on!).

To avoid any more cross-posts, I have set up a new egroup purely to discuss
rotaract.org, as I know not all Rotaractors feel this issue affects them. So
all future discussion / information will be sent to the "rotaractdotorg"
egroup: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rotaractdotorg/

BACKGROUND
[From my perspective - if any rotaract.org webmasters would like to add or
amend anything, please do!]

The Global Rotaract Information Centre was set up around 8 years ago, and in
addition to being an information resource for all Rotaractors, offered
rotaract.org email addresses and URLs (both redirects).

RI has a policy of reclaiming any Rotary-related domains that are of a
"global" nature, ie those that are not qualified by the club or district name.
rotaract.org was one such domain that RI took control of (the domain only, not
the site itself). RI University is another.

Most Rotaractors would have been blissfully unaware of this change, until RI
turned the domain off on April 22nd this year. They informed the webmasters of
this 2 days later. The rest of us either discovered the loss the hard way, or
in some cases received an email from the webmasters of rotaract.org in early
May.

The reason for the loss of the site eventually received from RI was that on at
least one occasion (they have hinted that there were more), a non-Rotaractor
signed up for a rotaract.org email address, and used it for a fraudulent
purpose. The company at the receiving end of the fraud contacted RI, as the
owners of the domain, to try to track down this person. RI consequently shut
down the ENTIRE site so that such activities could not happen again.

[Note: by RI I am referring to the administrative staff in Evanston]

The consequences of this have been enormous: in addition to Rotaract's main
communication network disappearing, much time and money has been lost in the
promotion of rotaract.org addresses. It has also had an adverse affect on the
number of Rotaractors intending to join Rotary in the future, to name just a
few things.

Discussions with some of these administrative staff at RI reveals that they
had been in consultation with the webmasters of rotaract.org for quite some
time prior to this to endeavour to set up a "legal entity" so that if such a
situation as what did happen arose, this other entity would be responsible,
not RI. I gather a fair amount of work was done by the webmasters towards
this, but it was never finished. RI claim the webmasters stopped responding to
discussions about this 6 or so months ago.

In short, the situation appears to have arisen out of a lack of communication
and understanding. It is unfortunate that so many of us have suffered as a
result.

WHAT NOW?

During the Brisbane Convention, I met with Ed Futa, backed up by a past RI
Director (my dad!) and a member of the RI Technology Committee. We explained
that while we understood their reasoning for shutting down rotaract.org, the
way it was done was not acceptable, and in the interest of Rotary-Rotaract
relations, something needed to be done other than just telling us "we have
made a decision, live with it."

** Ed gave me verbal agreement that the URL redirects could be reinstated for
a short period (say 2 weeks) with a message to update you bookmarks as the
address would be changing. I have not yet discussed this with the CIO yet to
see if he agrees too. Do any of you think there would be merit in this?

(The old redirects still exist, but now with the address
www.rotaract-club.com)

** Ed appointed me the chair of a new committee reponsible for rotaract.org.
This committee will be representative of Rotaract worldwide, and will work
with the administrative staff at RI to set up a legal entity and work out a
licensing agreement in order for them to let us use rotaract.org again. This
includes a complete rewrite of the site and its content which RI wishes to
approve.

(Anyone with a programming background who is interested in taking an
administrative role in the website, please contact me! The new redevelopment
at rotaract.org.au looks like it will make an excellent blueprint for what is
required for rotaract.org and I urge everyone to check it out!)

I then met with Alan Jarvis (the Chief Information Officer) and Djenne Clayton
(legal) to discuss how to go from here. The outcomes of that meeting were:

** The formation of a legal entity and forming a subsequent licensing
agreement are the main priorities. I will liaise with Djenne further to sort
this out.

** Email redirection is something they are not likely to allow under the
licensing agreement. This is very, very sad. It looks like if anyone wants a
rotaract email address, it will be need to be done at a lower level (eg by
country, district, or club). Does anyone want me to continue to fight for it?
If rotarymail.net is allowed to continue as is while rotaract.org's email
cannot, I will certainly jump up and down a bit more.

** URL redirection is something that can be reinstated, but they advised
against for the exact reason I have been jumping up and down at them - if the
domain goes down, everything goes down. If URL redirects are used, they prefer
subdomains (clubname.rotaract.org) instead of the previous set up of
subdirectories (rotaract.org/clubname). There appears to be leeway there. What
do you think about this?

** Regarding the look and feel, RI wants a say in this, since they own the
Rotaract mark. They have requested it resemble rotary.org (*shudder*). I am
hoping they only mean in terms of look, because I personally think rotary.org
is a shocking site.

** RI want to approve the sitemap before the domain name is reinstated. It
does not appear that they are too worried about the content itself, only that
it remains up to date, is available in numerous languages (volunteers to
translate, please contact me!!), and is not dependent on a couple of people.

At the Rotaract Pre-Convention, a website committee was formed which has
already started thinking about content. I certainly encourage discussion about
this on the rotaractdotorg egroup.

Yours in service,
DRR Simone Collins

Rotary world mourns death of Ade Majiyagbe
Ade Majiyagbe and RI President-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe in a 2002 photo.

Ade Majiyagbe, wife of RI President-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe, died on 6 June 2003 in England, having suffered a stroke a few weeks earlier. Known and loved throughout the Rotary world for her warmth, good humor, and dedication to Rotary, Ade was very active in Inner Wheel in her homeland of Nigeria and served on the organization’s international board of directors.

An insurance claims adjuster by profession, she also sang in her church choir and enjoyed sewing and fashion design. She is also survived by her son, John.

Ade Majiyagbe was a familiar presence with her husband at RI conventions, the International Assembly, and other meetings. Leading the spouses’ session at the 2003 International Assembly, she reinforced her husband’s message of addressing the world’s most pressing problems, saying: “As privileged people and spouses of Rotarians who are known for humanitarian services, we must team up to give back to society what society gave us. We must Lend a Hand in helping to clothe the naked; Lend a Hand in feeding the poor; Lend a Hand in healing the sick; Lend a Hand in caring for the aged and comforting the bereaved.”

“Together with her husband, Ade Majiyagbe served and represented Rotary with devotion and faith,” said Gay Maloney, who served as her aide during the 2002-03 Rotary year. “Most of all, I witnessed her commitment to serve those less fortunate throughout the world. Because of her beautiful spirit and selfless nature, she inspired me and all others who had the privilege of knowing her.”

The funeral will be held Friday, 13 June at 11:30 am at St. Andrew’s Church, Bathune Rd., Stoke Newington, London N16 England. Rotarians may send condolences to President-elect Majiyagbe in care of the President’s Office at RI World Headquarters. Memorial contributions in honor of Ade Majiyagbe can be made to "Ade's Hope Fund for the Education of Women and Children" c/o The Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 75133, Chicago, IL 60675-5133 USA.

Un nuevo período se acerca. Nuevas expectativas, nuevos rumbos.

He recorrido muchos clubes Rotarios, Rotaractianos e Interactianos.

Hi everyone,

I thought I would elaborate on Marcus's earlier question regarding
rules for this list.

I have changed the description on the home page of this egroup to
reflect that it is fine for people to post in languages other than
english.

I have also mentioned that both joining and posting is unmoderated -
I want communication to be as free as possible.

Having said that, if someone abuses this group such as repeatedly
being offensive to other members of this group, or if someone spams
the group, and does not stop after being asked to, I feel that person
should be banned, rather than introducing moderation. Are you all
comfortable with that?

If you haven't checked out the "Links" section of the egroup home
page already (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rotaractnet/links) please
do, and be sure to add in links to you club, district, MDIO etc if it
is not there. I am slowly adding some more links there everyday.

Incidentally, I'm not sure if you are all aware that while the old
rotaract.org URL redirects do not work, if you change it to rotaract-
club.com/ the redirects DO still exist? Make sure you put a slash
after your club or district though, eg www.rotaract-
club.com/southperth/

Keep up the great information exchange!

YIR,
Simone

Hi everyone,

I only returned home to Perth late last night, and am now wading
through the 500+ emails on the 2 accounts I have checked so far
(still have others I haven't looked at yet)...

I will post you the info I have gathered about rotaract.org shortly,
but I want to clarify a couple of things via email with the CIO at RI
first just to make sure I have everything correct and in writing.

I will send a run down of the events when I get home from work
tonight so that I can send the one email to as many Rotaractors / key
Rotarians as possible. I gathered a lot of support from ROTI
(Rotarians on the Internet) and the RI IT Committee, as well as some
past RI Directors, who would all like to be kept informed of what is
happening. Now I need to sort through all the business cards I
collected during the Convention :)

Sure... there is no language restriction on this list. I'm not sure why you
felt there was a restriction?

Please do invite as many people as possible to this list. I am still at the
Brisbane Convention, and have been making headway in regards to rotaract.org

people as possible once I return home and have my full address book handy.

That's good to hear re: rotaract.org!  I'm keen to see the information :-)

As of today, our club's site is located at http://cairns.rotaract.org.au - we were able to delegate the 'cairns' subdomain with the help of Tom Howard, the administrator of rotaract.org.au.

Hi there

I have no objection to the use / making available of the logo at all - that's why I made it in the first place :-)  I also recently made a vector-based version (which means it can be scaled to any size with no loss in quality), using the proportions stated in the Rotaract handbook.  If anyone's interested in that, let me know!

I think it's great that you're putting together a file repository - we have one of sorts at our website for our meeting minutes etc, but it's a little out of date.  This coming year we're going to take more initiative with the website and start using it for what it was intended.

Simone (and Mr. Futa, which will receive a copy)

I posted a statement on the RI Discussion Forum where says that this actions from RI behalf does not follow the 4-way test, se they itself could not have done that. We are free to use Rotaract Symbol and logo as the Rotaract manual says, and such ways were adopted and used in rotaract.org as I see. There have never been any kind of use of the rotary emblem as I recall. They cannot complain, we're just following rules and we ourselves had to adopt a way of universalizing the our Rotaract through our WebSite. Since rotary does give just a little, insignificant space inside Rotary.org for us, and in ways we cannot have any control of it's content.

Rotaract is trying to gain significance, we are not a projet of Rotary any more, WE ARE PARTNERS, as RI itself states in it's Procedures Manual. Such as it says, we cannot be treated like this. We actually don't receive support of a full staff corp as rotary does, and when we try to organize ourselves in a better way Rotary does that. Using the @rotaract.org is like using the Rotaract emblem, it says I'm a Rotaractor. And RI instead of just closing the site, SHOULD have offered support in order to authenticate those registering for the service. Why not update Rotary dabase with Rotaractors data also? Is that not important?! What does matter?

All the site asked for was HELP to find out who held that e-mail that had not paid. Was it that difficult to help them and then help Rotaract improve its services? Or it was just easier to shut everything down like "We own you!". Rotary does not owns Rotaract, it has created Rotaract, and itself says: Rotaract has its autonomy... Why is that? That Action goes against everything Rotary always said and tried to foment.

Almost all of my district's clubs used the service, now all the material we created for marketing is now lost, and has to be rebuilt. A lot of effort thrown away because some people just went through the easy way... I again state, they did not followed the 4-way test.

In fact all that shows that Rotaract needs a kind of DRR in Rotary International, a person Rotaractor or not, that is directly conected with us in Rotaract, not only with Rotarians and Manuals... Also, it does need a board of ROTARACTORS, that can be created and used through the web. Those people should receive those informations, problems and stuff discuss between them and then say what to do, with reasonable actions.

There is a link in Rotary official website, and there it has been for some years, but it has never worked (not for Rotaract at least). This link says: REGISTER YOUR ROTARACT WEB SITE.

Rotary not being content with closing our main World site, also does not provide any kind of similar service!

And the final paragraph, is what anger's the most... It says that we should use the directory instead of the website... The website was not for our internal relations!!!! It was for making rotaract websites accessible for the public, so that we could use those addresses in t-shirts, adds, and stuff...

As a matter of fact, i wonder... Has Rotary even got the picture of what was the purpose of our website? Perhaps not, because rotary itself does not offer any of our services. Any kind of ORG has it's own @name.org and www.name.org, why we cannot? Why ROTARY does not offer it to its associates? Does it means that Rotary does not trust its data?

Hi everyone,

Apologies for cross-posts, but this information is important.

I have confirmed with RI that THEY WILL NOT REINSTATE rotaract.org REDIRECTS
AGAIN.

I cannot believe that we cannot use a url like "www.rotaract.org/d9470" but
it is ok for us to PAY to use something like "www.rotaract9470.org"!!!

I am very, very disappointed with Rotary International. The disregard they
show for their partners in service is shocking.

Yours in service,

      May 2003

      Dear District Rotaract Representative Collins:

Thank you for your email inquiry about the status of www.rotaract.org. This
web site has been maintained by Rotaract and Rotarian volunteers to create a
centralized online resource for Rotaract clubs worldwide.

Recently, potentially fraudulent activity was conducted by someone using an
"@rotaract.org" email address.  This situation was brought to the attention
of Rotary International, as owners of the www.rotaract.org domain name, and
required the temporary disabling of the site.  I am currently working with
the volunteers who maintain the site to ensure proper licensing and policy
compliance before reactivating the site.  In the meantime, entering
www.rotaract.org into a Web browser will direct users to the Rotaract
section of the RI Web site at www.rotaract.org.  This site has undergone
many recent improvements and includes an extensive variety of resources for
Rotaract clubs, including the Online Publications Catalog, club Web site
registry, searchable project databases, quarterly editions of Rotaract News,
documents for download, and enhanced Language Communities.

When www.rotaract.org was established several years ago, the Internet was
still a new frontier with very few rules governing its use.  However, as the
Internet has become more accessible, many local governments have developed
regulations to help protect Internet users.  As the owner of
www.rotaract.org RI has a responsibility to ensure that the services offered
in conjunction with the domain name adhere to these burgeoning international
laws and policies.  RI also has a responsibility to protect and monitor the
use of its trademarks in order to minimize the organization's liability
should a claim or lawsuit arise.  The name Rotaract appearing in an email
address or URL without further qualifiers specifying the Rotaract club,
district, or approved multidistrict entity responsible for the user is
disallowed according to Board policy.  Accordingly, the email redirection
and Web site sub-domaining services that were offered on www.rotaract.org
place RI in a precarious legal position which could expose Rotarians and
ultimately Rotaractors to unforeseen costs.  Therefore, the email
redirection and Web site sub-domaining services will no longer be available
when the site is reactivated.

Please update any materials created by your club to feature actual email
addresses and web sites that properly identify your club, district, or
multidistrict entity in the domains.  We also encourage you to register your
site on the RI Web site at:  www.rotary.org/membership/websites/index.html.
Additionally, if your incoming Rotaract club officer has already submitted,
or has yet to submit, his or her contact information for inclusion in the
2003-04 Worldwide Rotaract Directory, please provide any corrections and
information as soon as possible by email:  data@... or fax:
1-847-328-8554.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to strengthen the
presence of Rotaract clubs on the Internet.

      Regards,

      Edwin H. Futa
      General Secretary
      Rotary International

Hi!

I'm Marcos Carot, Rotaract Club de Paraná, District 4960, Argentina
(www.rotaractparana.org.ar)

I know that this mailing list was created someway as a response to the
shut down of Rotaract.org

Obviously, there are not rules for this list yet, especially regarding
allowed languages.

I wish to express that a list that wants to grow worldwide must tolerate
in their messages all the languages of the world. The other world list,
managed by Rotaract Deutschland passes messages in different languages
but the members of the list are very intolerant when that language is
not English.

I will strongly support this list redistributing invitations to join
worldwide (I reach about 10 thousands rotaractors of the world) only if
all the current members share that language freedom is a must if we are
talking about a worldwide and "tolerant" organization as Rotaract, and
then expressing this freedom of languages in the web of the group, as a
rule of it.

If you think that this argument is not good, then I think this is a
parallel list to the existing world list, so it has no reason to be.

To those who don't know, to subscribe to the world list you have to send
a mail to Majordomo@... and in the body of the message write:
subscribe list-world

Thank you!

Hi there

Just for courtesy's sake, I'd like to introduce myself!  I'm Shaun Johnston from the Rotaract Club of Cairns.  I'm the current Secretary and incoming President of the club.

Our club's website is at http://rotaract.compverse.com.au.

I also claim ownership of the rotaract logo design that's currently gracing the rotaractnet yahoo! group home page! It's flattering to see it's being used in a variety of places :-D

Anyway...it's great to see that rotaract is still powering along, regardless of what RI throws at it (unintentionally or intentionally!)!  Hopefully this group will fuel some positive discussions, and bring some new ideas to us as a body!

Best regards,

Hello Group Members,

Lets begin a new year in Rotaract with a little sunshine
and a little rain to create a beautiful Rainbow. Rotaract Club Of New
Bombay(RCNB), Dist 3140, invites you to jointly be a part of its
first bulletin for the year 2003-2004, called RAINBOW.

Rainbow will be a bulletin published by RCNB , and
articles will be contributed by exactly 7 clubs all over the world.
This could be the best way to start our new year in Rotaract and to
know each other better. Each club will be contributing articles for
the bulletin as stated below:
