Unfortunately cutting and sleeving poles won't work. It creates a
problem not only with stability but also with drips in the interior. But
since that's the only thing that an Xtyracycle can not haul for me I'm
still looking at going carless. Up until this last year I couldn't
conceive of such since I was having to haul around a full sized harp.
Since I'm not doing that anymore I can use the X to get the rest of my
instruments where I need to go.

I'm thinking that I'll try it for 6 months - take the car off the road,
remove the plates etc and see if I can do it. Right now it's too easy to
get lazy and take the car - like today when they are predicting severe
storms by this afternoon on the commute home. I need to check with my
insurance co too to see what my options are. Once you cancel your
insurance it's hell to get it back.

When I have to move the tipi I'll either have to find someone else in my
area going the same way and ride with them or rent a truck with a square
hitch for the back carrier that supports the length. It's not like i
move them every weekend.

How far do you move it, usually? I imagine you could recycle an old
worn-out
kids trailer, put one end of the poles on that (lashing trailer hitch
to poles), attach
the other to the X (in a way that allows the rear to swivel), and
then you would
be a Very Long Load.

But that would be slow, and might even be dangerous. Certainly, in city
traffic, you would confuse people in cars.

I built a 17' Cheyenne tipi in 1975 and have camped in it in Co. Az. Ok and Tx.

My lodge pine poles are 24' and the set weighs a "ton".

You could rig up to move them one at a time. An extreme bike flag.

Moving the 60# cover, the linings, floor covering, buffalo robes, parfleches and your scalp pole could be done in several trips with a small trailer. I love mine if I am going to be camped for at least a week. My wife makes me put it up and take it down. She won't do it and won't let me marry a couple of younger ladies to help her.

Hey, does anyone out there have a firm date for the delivery of the new batch of Xtracycles?  I am anxiously awaiting mine and just am on pins and needles here.  I mean I can ride my old bike the way it IS of course, but a new X would be so nice!

so im readin thru the Surly blog today, and good news, it sounds like they are
working
things out with the Big Dummy. im anxiously waiting a batch. however, as im
always onto
something new, that is i've always got projects, lined up, along with that
inevititably there
is finance in that process, so i keep trying to forecast what i would be
comfortable letting
loose with to build a new rig like the Dummy.
i keep thinking that at that point I'd send my current Xtracycle convert down to
by
brothers in LA.
a week back or whatever it was, i had managed to swap around a couple of bikes,
and
ended up with a pretty new, used, Trek CX bike, so i shipped that down to LA.
Dylan was/
is beyond super stoked to get a "fast" bike, as he's been in a 2 decade affair
with the MTB.
the CX bike is his first 700c.
awhile back i had sent him a rack and set of panniers. that blew his mind. its
funny how
we get caught up in our ways. me not being an exception. using a set of bags,
and
getting the messenger bag off of my back is a welcomed luxury.
so there is Dylan riding from Melrose/Fairfax down past Venice on his new(ish)
CX bike. I
can only imagine how much faster it feels compared to the Trek Liquid i sent the
year b4.
now that i've got him on this groove of panniers, etc. it will be just a matter
of time b4 i
send down the Cdale Xtra convert.

on another note, i was playin around with some photos i took, and this what i
ended up
with.

kind of cool

Y'know, the funny thing here is that my MTB (OK, an OLD Jamis! that I got FREE 'coz it was being tossed in the dumpster!  the P.O, GAVE it to me, I didn't just snatch it, done that before too however!  got a really nice simple road bike a while back that needed a wheel true to get it perfect!)

Anyway, My Jamis felt pretty sluggish with the big ol fat tires on it, so I swapped them for a cheap set of bald tread street tires I had laying around ($10 Wal Mart tires!) and It was pretty nice!  then I finally popped for a set of decent street tires.  In this case Primo Comets.  which are 100 psi road tires and pretty sturdy.  26 x 1.5.  THAT alone makes the bike much "faster"/easier to pedal.  My "off road" riding is pretty much confined to bike trails or gravel roads, not singletrack.

Secondly, I may not always stick fenders on a bike, but I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put some way of carrying things because unless I am REALLY desperate or in a HUGE hurry, I almost never carry a backpack or messenger bag.  i have an ancient pair of low cost panniers that work pretty well, and a new set of Banjo Brothers bags that I don't really like much.  But then the X will be here soon and I won't have to deal with that any more.   On the other hand, I shall make sure I install a hitch for my little yellow trailer and for my Trek Transit trailer so that my grand daughters Olivia and Sydney can ride along!  My X is going to be MY SUV.  SWMBO can HAVE the Minivan!  at least when it is not raining or -10.....that heater is nice to have!  i can't afford to move to where the weather suits my clothes!

I noticed something interesting today.  I was driving my Minivan to something with SWMBO in the shotgun seat.  (meeting the new inlaws!  Our daughter is getting married in Nov, and we were meeting HIS family for dinner,,, Whooooo boy!)  anyway, I looked up at the sticker on the windshield to see when the oil change was due.....4/13/07, hmmmmm that was APRIL!  oooops, late again!   But WAIT!  it says, 68769 miles is the next oil change.......Looking at the Odometer, I see, WHAT???  68695!   I still have over 70 miles LEFT!  I have driven LESS than 3000 miles since January 13!  At least in my POV.  The rest has been Human power or Human Electric power. (electric assist on my bicycle)  I may not be car free, but I AM car lite!

By the way, a city council member ran into me downtown and as we talked, he asked, "Do you even OWN a car?"  I laughed and said, "sure, but I don't drive much!  I get PAID to drive, I don't drive for fun!"  HAH!  there is a twist for you.  Remember those stories about union guys who refuse to do something that is not in their job description, or to work into break time!  that is sort of ME!  When I am working, I drive.  I drive a LOT, about 60-70 K per year!  But I don't have to do it for practice!  i will take my bike thanks!

I had to go look up SWMBO! (She who must be obeyed for those like me who didn't know).

Mark, I to am car-lite (or in my case van-lite) only I refuse to use my campervan to commute or run errands; I use it for fun only. I try to only use it for out-of-town/overnight trips that I can't bike to. The van just went through it 6-monthly inspection for a WOF (warrent of fitness) the other day and to my surprise, for the second six-month period in a row, it passed with no work needed. This is undoubtedly because in the last year I've hardly used it compared to the amount of use it got before I owned an xtracycle. My bike has certainly paid for itself in the last 12 months!

Hi folks,

What's the word on where to mount the bracket for the Peapod seat? I'm
talking about the main one, that is made to clamp one large tube. I
see pics of it on the seat tube, but I'm short. I tried it on the top
tube, but that doesn't leave a lot of room for my little one, and it
kinda wide betwixt me knees(!). Seat post? Makes me nervous, just
because there is one more connection in the chain.

Also, I see pics of the central mounting point clamping across the seat
stays, near the seat tube. I got this seat used, without
documentation, and I just figured I better use all the parts, but maybe
I don't have to use the seat-tube clamp bracket-thing at all. Do I
need another type of bracket to clamp the stays? Where would I find
such an item?

Thanks--d

Hi all,

Just confirmed that my Free Radical is sitting on the porch, waiting
for me. It's been a long wait since May, so I'm itching to get it
together.

I'll be building mine on a 2005 Giant Lite (electric bike), which will
help my wife haul our two kids + groceries, as well as other daily Mom
stuff within cycling distance. Of course, it's for me, too.

I know I forgot to specify a single-speed chain, so I'll need to pick
up an extra. Minor detail.

I'm excited to finally have it. I'll update with my experience soon.

Mine got here TODAY and I installed it this afternoon, It took me about 2 1/2 hours to install the Free Rad and Wideloaders.  I have a little basic tweaking to do yet to get everything just so, but my initial impression is that the free rad is both not noticeable, and noticeable.  By this I mean that it doesn't seem to be back there when you ride.  the bike feels about like it did before, except in MY case the bike is a little more stable and surefooted, and climbing is somewhat easier.  I don't know why this should be!  I did a small grocery run this afternoon and the bike performed flawlessly.  I can't think whether to leave the wideloaders on all the time or stash them!  Arrrrgh!

I keep both my wide-loaders attached all the time along with the long-loaders. I find the wide-loaders are almost just as good as having the footsies on if the situation arises where a friend wants to hop on. Also, in general I think it makes drivers notice you that much more and seems more intimidating to them. “God forbid, that metal thing extending off the side of that bike scrape my paintjob!” ;)

Ride safe,

I keep my wideloader (only bought one) off the bike except when I know I'm going to need it. I carry it unmounted if I think I might need it.

The main reason for this is that I ride on a lot of mixed-use trails with bollards (posts) to block motor vehicles from using them. I've crashed a wide loader into a bollard a couple of times. The first crash sent me flying over the handlebars and rolling on the side of the trail. It bent the wide loader a bit, but it still goes on and off the bike okay. Its associated longloader is permanently attached now, though. The second crash just smushed a cardboard box I was carrying.

If you have more sense than me and can remember how wide you are and steer clear of obstacles I suppose you could leave them on all the time. Some of the trails I ride I don't think I could even fit with two wideloaders mounted.

Careful not to catch your heel under the wide loader when starting off.
Easy to do.
Enjoy.

Bizarrely, as much as this hurts, it seems not to cause any permanent
damage.
Yet, at least.

This sort of thing really ticks me off. Those anti-car devices are
set far too narrow, whether for a bike with wideloaders, or a bike
with a kid in a trailer, or even for a tandem (sometimes) going
through at an angle (don't want to scrape the stoker, they hate
that). Why do "they" do that? Are they afraid someone is going to
sneak a Smart Car onto the trail?

Ummmm, believe it or  not, I ALREADY DID THIS!  On my FIRST ride!  sheesh what a DUMMY!  But then the darn thing is so cool and stable now!  It was a great bike before the X but now it is really super!

By the way, I am stashing the wideloaders for the reasons  Jeff pointed out, wide!  But I will use them quite a bit I believe.  OK, now it is completely set up, at least for now.  My friend Steve dropped by a few minutes ago and dropped off my extension cord for the battery pack on my electric assist.  I gave the X a test ride of about 3 miles and with the e-assist it is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC!!  ?yeah, I need other things, fenders, the Footsies  all that stuff, but I now have a "camper"  wheee!  I DO have to shorten the darn kick stand though!  the bike sits STRAIGHT up in the air!

When I was setting up my Xtracycle today, I seriously thought about removing my power assist and doing without it.   I even rode it a bit with no battery pack because the power cord was not long enough and a friend was begged to lengthen it (he did!) so until it was returned, I rode with only the extra 8 lb motor hanging off the left side of the rear wheel.

Unfortunately, that motor makes the bike MORE practical than my car!  the X is now a Super commuting mama!  I LOVE it!  I can haul my stuff to work on Monday AM without a trailer and I plan to set up to be able to pull a trailer if necessary.  this is WAY too cool.   I took a second round ride this evening after hooking the motor up and rode to the local park, JUST super!  and I mean extremely good!  Small adjustments still need to be made, but this may be the best bike ever!
